Dragon maids are better then rocks.
Edit: People just take one look at the thumbnail/title and actually think I'm talking about Steven Universe's art style, the "Cal arts style", "sjw" art and smearframes. Christ can you just watch the video? I'm talking about an animation practice for fucks sake.

But there's a difference between the two. Where with Chowder it's a choice and adds to the overall feel of a scene (not to mention compliments the style of the cartoon writing wise), with SU it's just genuine laziness and lack of care for a show.

SPOILERS. in Change Your Mind (the most recent episode of SU), i couldn't stop watching the scene where the two stevens fuse to create normal steven, because they brought in a former animator from the Disney renaissance era (James Baxter) to animate it. It was just so fluid and amazingly done, i spent almost 20 minuets watching it over and over and just admiring it. This was the type of animation the show really needed. (Damn almost 100 likes tf)

It happened the same with Connie, in the first episodes, she was very, *VERY* taller than Steven, but by some reason, she became to get smaller and smaller at the point to look like a 5 years old girl (I know this may happened because Steven was growning up, but damn, the small height of Connie was very exaggerated) And yes, I think the same with Peridot, she was very tall, but when she was stripped of her armor, she was in a decent height, but whit every episode she was getting smaller and smaller. Honestly, I think that Rebecca Sugar has a lot of mistakes in the animation, such as bad proportionality.

Sonichu TAS has a particularly beautiful use of off model animation that really helps create a shifting, no, *flowing* appearance, as if it's the arctic ocean's rippling surface shimmering the light of the aurora borealis. Never has such unquantifiable abstractism come together so harmoniously to form a visual symphony of colors and shapes that marry themselves to the unmistakably distinct stylistic tone of the original graphic novel series.

3:30 Just an error there, you compared a storyboard to key frames, those are not the same. Storyboards are sketches to adapt the script into visuals and key frames are done by the animator after the storyboard have been approved and turned into the animatic for the timing. The problem with the Steven Universe is that they model the key frames on the storyboard instead of the character sheets. Storyboards can be a bit off model and it isn't too much a big deal (depending of your boss, I had one director who was very touchy about that), not the same with key frames. See some Disney and Dreamwork storyboards, they can be very sketchy and sometime they're not even with the final design of the characters. But yeah, Steven Universe animation is not very good.
@ballzcorps5146
@ballzcorps5146 5 жыл бұрын
I agree, Storyboards are a guide for the animators overseas to use as a guide to what they need to animate for the final product. (Which is why model sheets are imperative so that it can look as close as possible to the original design.) The animation for Steven Universe isn't bad (Art Direction and animation are two different things.) its not Nickelodeon or Disney Channel quality but it's decent. The art is the main issue here, having slight differences in faces and hair is one thing (Shows a small stylistic choice by the artist) but varying sizes that contradict EARLIER scenes is downright unprofessional.
@berserker3414
@berserker3414 5 жыл бұрын
@SenpaiGamerBlue nope, they are NOT. And I'm talking about experience here, I did some storyboards and those are made to adapt the script or narrative (text) into visuals. Keyframes are certain frames between the start of a movement and the end of another (not between scenes). You can have multiple loops/mov circles in each segment, like the eyes, arms, whatever. This in the case of animators like former Disney ones. Tv animation is too sloppy and low cost due to lack of time. Even our work was better than SU

It’s not like they tried really hard and went a direction people didn’t care for- which is how you’re making it seem. It’s a literal laziness that has lead to Steven being simultaneously 2 feet y’all and 5 feet tall and garnet being 8 feet and 6 feet and etc. I mean cmon. You’re telling me that one episode Steven is taller than the counter on his own and the next he’s having to use a stool isn’t just laziness and a lack of trying? They just draw them however because who cares. That’s unprofessional. It’s not like that’s even budget constraint or style choice.

@kodey1m

@Keoh 8 Simple difference is an insult isn't intended to help people its intended to degrade people. Screaming "Your art is Sh**" for example doesn't help anyone and is just there to degrade. Detailing why there are problems however is helpful and is not intended to degrade but rather help the creators and any other potential creators watching improve. So the intentions are different. Criticism can also still be delivered by someone that hates the subject of the criticism and still be criticism because it's still going through the aspects that are hindering it that can still help it improve. You may find very few of the things actually screamed to be insults on the internet by commenters are actually insults.

As an avid fan of SU I agree with this 100%. The show itself, the characters, plot, scenery, music etc. is amazing and some shots are beautiful. Unfortunately I feel like everything has become rather disjointed; it just feels like trying to read 7 different hand writings on an essay that should have been typed out in Times New Roman in the first place. I think the general aesthetic of SU is lovely but it's been haphazardly and flippantly stitched together, which honestly sucks because otherwise it's great. It just means that by the end of the episode the only thing hooking me is the plot, and the concept of the aesthetic, rather than the aesthetic itself. As contrast, an amazing short animated series with consistency and a lovely stylistic choice is Over the Garden Wall. As comparison, the characters are on model and stylistically the same. This means the story feels cohesive, and not like I'm in an alternate dimension every shot of every episode. I can focus on the story and the beauty of the show. Its a harsh truth; they are professional animators, and they should know better. And as someone who loves the show, it hurts.

the fact that anime rn is way more professionally animated than shows here is kinda hilarious bc anime typically dont have a giant budget(the whole reason they do the "cheek mouth" thing is that for some studios it's way too costly to try to animate normal mouths, not a style choice) and SU is said to have like $1,000,000 in the budget lol

yes, there are some beautifully drawn anime with decent animation, but you can't pretend that anime as a whole is doing great. just like in western cartoons style, we have accept mediocrity with plot and characters. you could put aside some anime and be like "but look! this has great characters and style!" (boku no hero, cells at work, your name), but we have to admit to ourselves that anime has become horribly oversaturated. with that said, western animation ain't doing so hot. we have a few good ones, like over the garden wall, bojack horseman, infinity train, samurai jack, and it goes on. all of those with unique and pretty decent styles, but they're not as polished. they are, however, a lot less cliche than a lot of popular anime in terms of character tropes and the scenarios. either way, we're kind of at an impasse.

@@ysabellamedrano3360 Not true, I've watch a lot of anime that, even tho, it has some poorly animations the stories are still incredibly good. High quality animations are still being made, and comparing to how Japan treats their cartoons to how mediocre western (trying to kill 2D animation with "live action" reboots") cartoons are, is laughable. There are so many well animated shows with great stories and art that to call them mediocre is a huge understatement. Hell, there are even high quality very well detailed anime movies with great art styles and beautiful animations still being made. Look at the anime on Netflix! There's barely anything cartoon related properties here in the US, mediocre or not, it is inmensibly better then what people do here in the US and is something that I'm glad Japan has not forgotten.

@powerstar 2028 Haven't you seen Devilman Crybaby, Violet Evergarden, One Punch Man, Attack on Titan? Look, I understand the animation used to be a lot more complicated back in the day, but they weren't perfect eather. When I first saw Ghost in Shell my first reaction was: "That was ok, the mouths looked terrible and the jumping made me dizzy". There are so many advances that japanese animation has now that sometimes it outshines the classics, transitions look smooth now, the mouths move better, the color grading and images looks stable, etc. Is only the annoyense of the use of cgi that makes me cringe everytime. I still have to see Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion, but they look like they suffer of similar problems like in GinS. I never ask for reboots, but I'm sure they can do a better job now then they could back in the day. There's still a ton of great modern anime out there, be glad they haven't reach levels of "Modern Art" cringe.😑 The stories are dope still.

While I do understand your point, I would like to point out that you can't just pin this all on the show's creator, you do know more than one person worked on the production, right? Plus, CN was giving Teen Titans Go more budget than other shows, not to mention that the animation is done by two different studios in Korea due to the lower budget, etc. I am not trying to defend any of it, I'm just pointing out that the show was screwed over on multiple levels because CN has gone too corporate, which effects the quality of the shows people actually care about

I agree with everything except the storyboard part. They're not meant to be pretty, unless you're going to present them to a client who doesn't know shit about the process of making an animation and would think this is how the final product will look like, many artists consider polishing storyboards to be a waste of time. It's the quality of the shot that matters at this stage, not the quality of the drawing (see Miraculous Ladybug storyboards for example).
@DeadKraken
@DeadKraken 5 жыл бұрын
@Squidward I agree, storyboards are a very important part in the 2D animation process, and even if they don't(and shouldn't honestly, it's a waste of time) look pretty and clean, they should still look clear, have interesting angles and characters correctly proportioned to each other. I've seen some very rough\sketch like storyboards with the bare minimum in terms of polish, that still gave life to very cool animated moments, but the work was all done in-house(with a team of people working in the same building), not commissioned to other studios. When you commission to other studios you should be very clear with what you want and how you want it, to make the work easier for everybody. SU storyboards are bland and unclear, add to that the encouragement to not use model sheets and a lazy quality control, and you have a show that is as visually un-appealing as it can be.

According to Ian Jones Quartey, a former storyboard artist of Steven Universe and creator of OK KO, Steven Universe goes off-model because he thinks it's "funny" when characters go off model and to let staff art style be shown. That has to be one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. The first thing for a show creator and staff do to is stay on model, even Johnny Test and Teen Titans Go know the concept. This makes them look unprofessional, sloppy and lazy staff that they can't even get the height right. If he wants the staff art to be shown, then they can do it online, not on a cartoon show. Like for goodness sake, it's their job to be on-model of the character and they aren't doing what's it required!

Artistic freedom shouldn't matter in a professional animation that is viewed by millions. It is a show that should have a consistant, appealing style. Artistic freedom could be shown through new characters that are introduced or interesting background, color, or lighting choices. It's distracting to see a really cute Pearl with a wide nose and sweet face in later seasons versus an awkward Pearl with small eyes, a giant yaoi hand and long, thin nose in the first season.

You should take criticism with a huge hug if you were a true fan of the show, because you would like to have the maximum quality and for the director to actually use the budget and get more animators to work. If you are a "fan" (of the company) then go ahead and do what you're doing. At the end the animation will be made by one person and with a sloppy sad quality.

Defending inconsistency with "it's stylistic" falls apart when you ask yourself whether you have control over it. If according to you, there are changes to the model made in the name of "stylistic choice", there must obviously be an end that is achieved, like dramatic framing or something. _but if these inconsistencies are appearing simply because you don't have a firm enough grasp over the medium to control them, there is no possible way for you to organize that chaos, and therefore no possible intention behind any of it._ it may be a style, but is it YOUR style?

I don't think the SU animation is terrible, there are some really great scenes... when the characters are on model. I can agree that these characters go off model way too much, I can understand doing it for comedic effect but that's rarely the case for SU, most of the time they're off model just because there's no supervision over the artists. When the fans can clearly tell which episodes were drawn by which artist, it's sort of a problem. a lot of the characters (peridot, lapis, steven, connie, etc) all seem to be getting shorter, for example. I try not to let it bother me too much bc 1) I know next to nothing about animation and 2) I enjoy su for the story (even though that has it's issues as well), but even as a casual fan, the animation errors are unfortunately very noticeable.
