The thing that pisses me off is that many fans would defend this by saying it's mistakes or its their styles or some other excuses. Bullshit. As an animation student, this is beyond terrible. The main important job of doing animation is be consistent. You are assigned to draw a character design and draw them through animation sequence.

Actually I feel like a lot of people don't appreciate/ understand/ consider the animation and labor side to these shows. Like people demanding Infinity Train to be made NOW don't consider it takes 2+ years (if greenly and made quickly) to air- and many take much longer. I appreciate Rose's Universe takes on things and often does her videos in a respectful manner while also being critical and adding her own opinion. What may be obvious to you isn't obvious to everyone (as made clear by the Infinity Train demands).

Bottom line is the inconsistency is off putting and makes the product look lazy and unprofessional. I love this show and the crewniverse but it doesn’t mean they are free from criticism. Saying that the art variation is a form of freedom and expressionism for the artist just sounds like excuses for them not doing their job well.

If different storyboard artists can't have "artistic freedom" without keeping some kind of structure in character design, they're not very good. I'm sorry, but it's basic knowledge in any art-driven media that style has to be kept consistent. Comics, cartoons etc. And SU isn't special, it still needs to be held to those standards.

Honestly i love SU for the storyline and all but i gotta admit that the consistency is shit and i feel like our dear little creator is a bit too much of a people pleaser regarding this. I feel like she forgot that this is her work. Do whatever you want in your freetime but using the "it's their own style" excuse proves that it's unprofessional and lazy.

To be more precise, changes in the style must happen for a reason. The easiest example of this would be flashbacks or imaginary landscapes: they are typically given an entirely different style. But, of course, it goes way beyond just this. Long dialogue that would otherwise be just talking heads, punctuating a joke, visual parody to accompany the plot parody, and so on - all of these are often animated with deliberate style changes. So, what is the reason for the style changes in SU? The staff is too lazy to keep the style consistent.

And it wasn't consistent either,like sometimes you'd get really beautiful artwork and sometimes you'd get a random change that looks straight from uncanny valley hell for a couple of chapters that don't even look like they were drawn by the same guy...still a banger though

Great info vid. I haven't been keeping up with Steven Universe for quite a while now and I don't know every episodes' name. But, with what I see in this video I have an opinion to state. It'd be nice if they kept the color on both halves of the episode for Peridot and Lapiz the same or at least have a lot less of a saturation difference. It looks like the second half has 100% saturation which is not good for artists, I think based on what I've heard from an artist on KZbin. Honestly, I don't mind the little differences on Peridots hair, but it could be slightly annoying, but more similar colors are one thing I expect.

I'm fine with it as long as it physically doesn't change things in the narrative. But when Steven doesn't need a stepping stool to reach the counter then he does later in the series it pisses me off dude. That's physically changing his height at that point not a perspective thing.

It’s weird too. When we first see Lapis and Peridot, their colour palettes are really nice and fit into their respective settings. Then the next few times we see them (while they’re living together), they become horribly neon and their proportions are out of place. Finally, when Lapis has moved to the moon, they both go back to looking kind of like they did when they were first introduced. It’s like when they were being used as comic relief, no one paid any attention to the fact that they looked *nothing* like themselves.

Honestly I think there needed to be a character bible. The lack of consistency in character designs is one thing but over the last few years the crew have been inconsistent about basically everything from characterization to power sets. I'm all for artistic freedom but without consistent quality to show for their work it really feels like a waste of potential. Even more than their scheduling already does. It makes me more and more disappointed.

@@pondracer686 a series bible is something that is used to set the parameters of a series. It's basically the rule book of character backstory and information along with worldbuilding information. It's used in a lot of series but I don't know if Steven universe did.

I hate how sometimes lapis is a ocean blue and other times she is NEON cyan. They can't even keep the colors consistent! Just use color select! I also hate how sometimes she has bangs and other times her hair just kind of sticks out in any given direction. Her hair looks different basically every single time we see her. And I know people will say the colors change because of the lighting but that doesn't make sense with just how drastically different the colors are or in the context of the lighting or with how inconsistent it is. Edit: and it’s pretty much exclusive to Lapis specifically so none of the excuses people use even work.

It's completely fine to have artistic freedom. It's when you start to make the show look bad, unprofessional, and maybe even mediocre in pacing when you just wack a Steven sized Garnet into the scene when before Steven was as short as Garnet's knees. It matters not in a professional point of view how free you are, it's that, your profession, and making the show look bad because of your mistakes and lack of communication with partner is entirely your fault

bob bread Except what you said doesn't make sense, because the looks of the characters are all over the place. Sometimes they're smaller, sometimes they're not. If it's made them easier, episodes should be quicker to make and the characters themselves should look better over time, and both of those aren't true. Not to mention it shows that the storyboard artists aren't following the character model sheets like they should. All the characters have an established size and everyone involved is supposed to commit to that size. If Connie's body looks half the size as her debut appearance you're doing it wrong.

Tea Liger Not really. Story boarders usually do keep to their own styles when boarding on projects. It's the animators job to keep things consistent. If you look at the behind the scenes of any big animated movie the storyboards are all over the place artistically. The real issue here is that the Crewniverse is lazy and doesn't do the keyframes themselves like most productions do. Most of the time you give animators on your team the task of making all of the keyframes. This dictates not only the style but also the direction of the whole animation as keyframes are the main parts of the animation. Like say the action of raising your hand would have three keyframes; one frame would be the arm being down,then the arm being halfway up, and then the arm being entirely raised. From here the animation can be given to in betweeners who animate the frames between the keyframes to make motion smooth and animated. As the style is already set you don't have to worry about outsourcing inbetweeners as they can't mess things up too bad if they do their job right. From the looks of this show though they hired the inbetweeners to do everything and only gave them the rough guide to go off of.

I understand Rebecca Sugar allowing her storyboard artists some artistic freedom, but when it gets to the point that it now has where every character is constantly off model in every scene in every episode, she needs to start putting in some stricter guidelines for the storyboard artists. It's become harder and harder for me to watch the show I used to love and adore because of how jarring and awful the animation has become over the past year. Not to mention the fact that we've gone almost a full season and have had basically zero main story progression outside of the saving greg steven bomb, its been nothing but towney episodes that add nothing to the overall plot and rehashes of older episodes done explicitly worse.

Brandon Sike I know at least when other cartoons have filler like the most recent batch of Aventura time episodes Uncle gumbald and everyone are the main point of the first one then you get the tree trunks episode then the Marceline episode. The later to had nothing to do with gumbald but they at least mention it in the tree trunks episode and give cousin chicle s minor role in the Marceline episode. Oh and the other thing for over nine seasons adventure time has had no trouble keeping animation consistent and having characters start on model and they have a character (Jake) that can shapeshift but when he goes back to normal he's always the same size in the sun flower episode of Steven universe amethyst shapeshifts and is a different size almost every time she returns to her normal form. I agree with you 100% I used to really enjoy Steven universe now I can't even watch it without getting agitated

The Toontastic Toon this is a show, not a 'show and tell.' When you are an animator, or in this case, greatly influence the animators, you HAVE TO follow the design. The crewniverse needs to get it together, it's too jarring to see characters change height and appearance IN THE SAME EPISODE. It's not too much to ask for consistency, that's the expectation.

Being a manga and comic lover I'm pretty open and uncaring of the subtle change in art style; it it happens. But I do prefer the earlier more subtle colour palette rather than the newer toxic bright colours for Lapis and Peridot's skin, especially Lapis; I'm sorry but that shade of bright blue shouldn't be allowed in any animation and it hurts my eyes.

And it isn't even just a brighter version of her darker palette. It an entirely different hue. She looks great at night, sunset, and during stormy weather because it is based on a much calmer hue of blue. I love her sunset and night time palette much more.

blasphysics i didn't realize my mistake about Rick and Morty, I didn't know but it's not cool to call me ignorant fir making a mistake. You're right it's hard to keep characters 100% consistent while drawing them thousands of times but they should still have some more consistency. I don't think the merits of the show are void because of the inconsistency but , for me and my friends who watch su together, it removes us from the story sometimes. Just because it's a good snow doesn't mean it's above fair criticism 😛

The animators doing the ten thousand frames were using the storyboard artists' keyframes, though, going off of the material given to them. If the storyboard is sloppy, it's not the animators' job to fix it. And it's their job to maintain consistency; it's the nature of the biz. Style shifts that aren't intentional for artistic or directorial effect are, as far as I've read or seen, understood to be the mark of a sloppy company or employee work. As a casual bystander with no knowledge of any of the show's creators or policies, I'll see a stark inconsistency not as a celebration of creative freedom, but as a distracting flaw. It's not about intentions, but the finished product, and something like this strikes me as, to use what other commenters have said, unprofessional.

As an up and coming animator myself, when working on a team with several people, we all know that yes we all have different drawing styles, BUT we all try to get a base so that the characters will look the same once we switch hands. It looks really unprofessional to have an inconsistent artsyle, and character dynamics, and it's really unexeptable if it's present within the same episode. That's my view, and I know that not a lot of people take issue, but those animators in SKorea sure do notice it, when there is a sudden change.

I didn't even notice the style switching half way omg. I will admit, though seeing different styles within the show is inspiring to see, I feel as if they're getting lazy. Like they're trying to slip their laziness past Rebecca and using her personality to do so, since she is known to provide creative freedom to her storyboarders and is extremely kind. I will admit, this year so far has not been so kind to the Crewiverse so I will not hold it against them. Its just a neverending circle. Crewiverse gets a leak and loses some ratings, fans get hyped then disappointed by the "fillers", fans bash on them, crewiverse probably is getting tired of all the hate, show goes in lower quality, fans get more upset. It hurts both sides!

there is a height sheet... but it's relative. garnet is always taller than pearl. pearl is taller than lapis. lapis is taller than steven amethyst and peridot who are the same height. you will never see the heights break those rules. they change but never in relation to each other.

I wish all the animators stuck to one specific style. It's lazy for them to just draw it however they want. If they want to practice their own art style on their own time that's fine. But not for the actual show. That's why we have the art and character designers. Animators are suppossed to mimic that very art into animation. Yeah, but the thing is that SU isn't as high budget as you'd think. CN after all is way below Nick and Disney. And on top of that, Cartoon Network pours all of its money into Teen Titans Go! We get that Rebecca wants her crew to express as much of artistic freedom they want but you cannot deny the fact that its increadibly distracting and makes it very unprofessional, Every show has so many pages of model sheets for 1 character to keep them consistant and in proportion, while rebecca threw it all out of window would Avatar Be better if each storyboarder had all the freedom and one drew aang taller than sokka? or other drew toph with Big hair? or other one drew Zukos scar in a large size? The crewnevers looks not only unprofessional but increadibly lazy when they are ignoring their mistakes that they can fix easily by just giving the storyboard artist Model Sheets and Notes, these mistakes give the show many flaws and if they continiue to do so it will complitelly turn their viewers off, why should they give a shit about the show when the crew doesn't in the first place? you can let your crew express their artistic freedom but it doesn't mean the results will be good.

I think the animators/storyboard artists are just getting very lazy and I'm starting to notice it as the series progresses... I noticed in the new episode "Room for Ruby", Garnett was so short as if the animators don't have a reference sheet of the characters proportions while they're drawing. Granted yes, every artist/animator has their unique style but they are TRAINED for four years to draw a certain character consistently and accurately. Showing inconsistency in the characters just shows that either the animator is an amateur or just plain lazy.

I'm pretty sure in the first season of Sponge Bob, Powerpuff girls, Samurai Jack, Foster's Home, and Ed, Edd, and Eddy, a character turn around sheet, facial expression sheet, and proportion sheet were created to get the characters right. True sometimes the characters change a bit as the series progresses, but not out of laziness, but because the show has received more popularity and now the studio has more money to spend on more updated equipment and software. Being a character designer myself (I'm majoring in 2d/3d animation), I would feel pretty embarrassed if I got the chance to work at a top animation studio, assigned to draw a specific character, and then have the character who originally had an oval face and a tall build one episode and then draw the same character again but with a square face and as short as a midget the next.

The inconsistent character designs are permissible when *intentional,* if there is an expressive reason to depict a character a certain way to sell the emotion of the scene. Barring that, if the differences just come down to insufficient quality control, then that answers its own question. From a story perspective the inconsistency is forgivable. But from an artist's technical perspective, the show is lacking in finesse of execution. Anyone who is inspired to be an animator based on this show needs to recognize the difference between making the character expressive and flat-out going off model; regardless of whether or not *there is* a model to begin with (which SU may not) if the change is noticeable it detracts from the immersion of the story, which is a negative no matter what your perspective.

Multiple styles In a singular show is nothing new, and often welcomed. If used appropriately, it could help improve the atmosphere of a scene, (rounder, softer, less detailed models in comedic scenes for better expression. Sharper and more detailed designs for more serious moments). BUT the sizes and designs (not necessarily the models) needs to be constant and not changing.

This pissed me off throughout the series, the height proportions were way off and it's not "artist freedom" it's inaccuracy! sometimes peridot is as tall as lapis's shoulder and sometimes she's the height of her knee! and anything in between.... That is a huge gap of how tall she is. Personally I prefer when she's up to lapis's shoulder, she's small but not small enough to lose the edge of what I originally liked about her. Oh and sweet Jesus don't get me started on the hair, triangle hair is already a iffy look but when she was small her hair would be like 2 times her body size and it was so stupid. Keep her height to lapis's shoulder and her hair normal, I think the most accurate they got it was in barn mates but after that it fell apart. Her hair also went from a nice blonde to piss colour and her suit and skin turned neon highlighter colour. Shame

The reason why for Ian Jones Quartey, a former storyboard artist of Steven Universe and creator of OK KO, go off model because he thinks it's "funny" when characters go off model and to let staff art style be shown. That has to be one of the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. The first thing for a show creator and staff do to is stay on model, even Johnny Test and Teen Titans Go know the concept. This makes them look unprofessional, sloppy and lazy staff that they can't even get the height right. If he wants his staff art to shown, then they can do it online, not on a cartoon show. Like for goodness sake it's their job to be model and they aren't doing what's it required!

Exactly. Sometimes it's fine to go a bit off model for that "funny" aspect but it shouldn't be a consistent thing (unlike the character models). The whole different style crap is just plain stupid because they could just make hem more consistent and have the same style. There are times like I said when it can work like if someone does a big punch that's meant to be cartoony it'll squash and stretch a bit to make it pop more but that shouldn't be all the time on accident due to storyboarders lazy design choices and not ever wanting to stay coincident.

Theocles Saturn I actually didn't know that Lauren identified as they/them until ShadowGirlSwifty's comment. I believe that it is important to use pronouns that people identify with. If I would have known that Lauren identified as non-binary beforehand then I would would have used they/them pronouns instead of she/her.

Lauren’s style is my favorite, it’s consistent and the character design usually translates well into the character’s personality. Like giving Lapis frizzy hair is so cool and matches her character really well.

Honestly its not the size variation that bothers me is the colors. The first part has soft warmer colors and then the second part starts and everything turns super bright and almost neon 7:57

Yes. Lauren left the show. I think there are only 5 or so episodes left to air that they worked on.

That's a shame, her style was beginning to grow on me. But whenever Zuke and Lamar Abrams were paired together, it ended up looking really off and inconsistent and overall just not very good. But whenever her and Hilary Florido were paired, it worked much better! Not the best (that'd go to Jeff Liu and Joe Johnston as Ryan said) but still very good! It's a shame she left.
