Professor Robert Lustig is speaking at Emery Pharma's speaker series.
"Good food is medicine. Bad food needs medicine" Robert Lustig
Robert H. Lustig, M.D. is Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology at University of California, San Francisco, and Director of the Weight Assessment for Teen and Child Health (WATCH) Program at UCSF.
Professor Robert H. Lustig has made significant contributions to society through his research and advocacy focused on the impact of sugar consumption on human health. He is a prominent endocrinologist and pediatrician known for his work on the adverse effects of added sugars, particularly fructose, on metabolic health and the development of chronic diseases.
Lustig's research has shed light on the role of excessive sugar intake in the obesity epidemic and its connection to conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and fatty liver disease. He has highlighted the harmful effects of sugar on various aspects of human physiology, including subcellular pathologies, insulin resistance, and the promotion of de novo lipogenesis, which contributes to the accumulation of fat in the body.
Through his lectures, public appearances, and advocacy efforts, Lustig has raised awareness about the detrimental effects of sugar on human health and has advocated for policies to reduce sugar consumption. He has emphasized the importance of recognizing added sugars as a primary contributor to chronic diseases and has called for measures to address the sugar-laden food environment and improve public health.
Lustig is also known for his concept of "The Hateful or Grateful Eight," which refers to the eight factors that contribute to metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions associated with increased risk of chronic diseases. He has provided insights into the role of nutrition, including sugar, in the development and prevention of metabolic syndrome.
Overall, Professor Robert Lustig has made substantial contributions to society by advancing our understanding of the negative impact of sugar on human health and advocating for changes in public policy and individual behaviors to promote metabolic health and prevent chronic diseases.

I've read Dd. Lustig's books, and, have researched the "controversy" surrounding him in some circles. This much I know: before I ever heard of this individual, I dropped sugar 100%, and all of my electrolytes, blood pressure, all lipid panel values immediately crashed well into the "normal" range after many years of being highly obese--and did so within weeks. So, as to the controversy, I view Dr. Lustig as follows: he may be right for the right reasons, and he may be right for the wrong reasons, but, make no mistake, he. is. right.

@@GBOAC Basically, the stakeholders of the status quo have a powerful voice in any human endeavor. So, the pushback is formidable by those who wish to protective their turf, their narrative, etc.... You can find them in literature and on the net, often in the comments section. With RB essentially challenging the downstream herd, (treating symptoms), in his attempt to get them upstream, (treating the cause of those symptoms), it isn't hyperbole to state that that is a pretty heft lift in the face of the gale-force winds of the status quo crowd, particularly clinicians in healthcare. It's mind boggling how people like to put their capital and/or leisure interests above their long term health. Let alone that of other people, god forbid we would prevent obesity by removing easy access to carbohydrates. Thanks and have a great weekend as well.

I call it a grocery cart problem. When I get to the checkout I see that 90% of the carts are full to the top with stuff that shocks the living smell out of me. I honestly don't understand how anybody in this smart world with such easy access to stoves and pots and pans along with fresh, raw healthy food to indulge in, and yet the shoppers love their 24 packs of soda pop, beer, chips, dips, packaged white flour breakfast lunch and dinner crap. My cart has a small fresh farm in it! I'm 82, weigh 115 pounds. On no meds. I can walk all day, dance all night and run a small business. I am one in a million and it's very lonely. Junk-food addicts just love the acceptance they get from loving brand names and their junk food-induced doctor-visit games. Doctors approve of your sick appetites. I wish I were wrong. But they're all on meds and I'm not. So there you go! So sad..

It’s a super easy explanation… while somewhat amplified and simplified speaking, sugar in food IS akin to narcotics for the druggies… we choose it from our subliminal emotional brain, not from our educated rational brain. Our emotional brain, unfortunately also prefers being lazy, so having stuff pre-made is yet another call to our addiction control center… I think knowing when to submit to the emotional response or not, is much more the answer, than flaming people for just submitting (as you observe it)… and in this sense, I’m going way out on a limb, and going to call the people who just submit for non-adults in this sense… they never learned the rewards of postponed benefits, rather than immediate ones.

Another great talk from Dr. Lustig. When I was in Toronto, I volunteered at The Stop community food garden. We would wheelbarrow over huge bins of fresh food to the food bank nearby once a week and the lineup would be down the street. People were so excited to get fresh food because they simply could not afford to get it elsewhere. Some of them were homeless and didn't have access to refrigerators. It was a bittersweet feeling to be providing nutrient dense fresh good picked within a few hours in a "food dessert" located within a massive, expensive city. Some of these folks get the rest of their groceries from variety stores and gas stations. massive changes are desperately needed.

I always read ingredients labels. I knew things like high fructose corn syrup were bad, but having switched from a low fat/high carb diet to a high fat/low carb diet - and losing 30lbs in two months - I now look at all the corn syrup and sugar and seed oils in most food and wonder if food manufacturers are trying to kill us.

Apparently some people just do not care! Others are ignorant of what nutritional food really is. These same people go to work in some cases, Toto the Dr’s that have not been taught anything about health and nutrition yet watch you slowly die without a second thought all because the drug co. Is getting the Dr. To give you drugs that are making them rich. What a mess!

They know. They make their money by doing what they do. I've noticed lately that a lot of companies are offering keto options (still crap of course...), and offering other things to try to keep your business; for example, rather than the the regular brand name mayonnaise, they are offering olive oil based mayonnaise, but it's still full of soybean oil, which is PURE POISON of course. But they have the olive oil large on the front label in the hope you won't read the back label. If it comes in packaging, and didn't have a mother; you DON'T want to eat it.

Yes metabolic dysregulation is huge. However it’s food addiction to starch, sugar and processed foods that must be overcome and mastered. We have a sick relationship with food, along with misinformation addiction and dysfunctional family systems. You cannot fix the damage of dysfunctional family systems and emotional trauma with healthy eating. You must deal with the core emotional issues as well. Come on doc, mitochondrial function has its role but these emotional issues have to be dealt with.

As a long distance marathon runner (14 marathons) I'd be very interested to know Dr Rob Lustig's thoughts on fructose being added to products like 'Endura' to keep you hydrated when really, for a 10mile run, all I ever really needed was salt for help with perspiration - running in Australia. When I found out (years ago now) these products contained fructose I stopped using them but never stopped running. The 'buzz' I thought I was getting from endorphins on long distant runs was really just insulin as I consumed more and more 'gel' substances to run my 35km.

I have watched the father of a friend for 15 years. He eats a crap diet of sweets, has a gigantic beer belly and never exercises. His doctor NEVER talked to him about metabolic dysfunction. His wife had her lower intestines removed due to IBS. 2 years later the doctors removed his lower intestines. Really????? He has been in a wheelchair for 2 years. Today he is in the hospital to begin amputation of his left toe. They want to take his leg. The doctors have him on antibiotics and a suger bag. They brought him crap ultra processed fake foods to eat. I have seen this soooooo many times. If the doctor shows while I visit him in the hospital I will lose it on him. I have read Dr Lustigs work. He is 💯 percent correct. In fact I'm a bit worried about Dr. Lustigs health. He knows he's not taking care of himself and we need him to carry on!

Unimportant, but Belie means 'show that something is untruthful', pretty sure you want 'Underlie' as in 'are the underpinnings of' in the title. And yes, I'm aware that it's on one of Dr Lustig's slides...

Agreed. But I think such world experts lead a too-stressed life . . . a very unbalanced life, and I think that screws up appetite (often over-eating for comfort, rest) . . . stress is also known to screw up absorption of nutrients . . .leading people to take in more to cover a sense of not being fully nourished, but taking in too many calories etc. . . .well, something like that. Clearly his knowledge is vast, and I guess we could/should forgive him for not looking like the healthiest person on earth (which shows that all that knowledge still can't fool the body/mind . . . it needs a balanced lifestyle . . .

Does it bother anyone else that Dr. Lustig writes books and lectures on dietary causes of metabolic disease and he carries all that extra weight?

Wow! Fascinating! TY! I’ve wondered if watching a cooking show of deserts releases insulin, in the same way as tasting something sweet, even if artificial sweeteners? I think it does. What do you think?

Great info as always. Sure wish he'd build more muscle though, that belly screams insulin resistance to me! A perfect diet, with too little exercise, always will keep any person metabolically unfit (UNC study shows 88% of Americans are metabolically sick)

People on low fat or even vegan diets are rarely overweight.... it is not true that you will be fat on every diet, are you insane ? guy is troll/hack or something he is saying that you can eat as many meat as you want don't count calories and fat is good :D and look at his outcome - overweight, probably pre-diabetic.

@@covidmania7586 that's just observational. Also looking skinny is very different than metabolically healthy. I've had so many skinny, normal looking people in my clinic that were diabetic, had strokes, heart attacks, NAFLD. Obesity is not a cause, it's a symptom that CAN point to poor health. You can't say meat is bad just because it has saturated fat lol, that was a lie created in the 70s by Ancel Keys. Saturated fat is in many foods. Eat a wide variety of veggies, leafy greens, nuts, meats, water or unsweetened tea. Exercise a lot, build strong muscle. Sleep well

Belie? I listened to this talk but didn't hear anything about subcellular processes belying chronic disease. (Incidently, I did hear quite a bit about processes that underlie chronic disease.)

Many thanks, B Ruphe! My unwillingness to audit this article is based on that very point...If the producers of this programme are too lazy or too incompetent to exert the minimal amount of energy to employ a person who has a vocabulary commensurate with the needs of the subject,WHY would I pay any attention to their information?

We don’t really eat much sugar at home, in terms of hidden sugar, in tea or coffee or also deserts, just on the odd occasion. A few weeks ago my friend came round and we munched through a pack a cookies, which were quite the opposite to wafer-thin. After about 45mins of eating them, my blood pressure went sky high, concentration went down the toilet and I felt like absolute crap. The effects were probably more noticeable due to having minimal sugar in our diets. This evidence Dr Lustig is presenting here is real, there should be no controversy!

I was Obese and the health insurance companies wouldn’t insure me or the only offers were high deductible high premium. I have high blood pressure controlled. No health problems ever. How many skinny folks did they insure who got sick?

I agree it is not fair. Things would be different if everybody, skinny or obese, had to have an ultrasound of the liver first, to see if they have a fatty liver, or if the lipid guidelines were rewritten to focus on triglycerides and the triglyceride to HDL ratio, which Dr. Lustig explains elsewhere is a way to tell if you are insulin resistant...As Dr. Lustig mentioned, 80% of obese people have insulin resistance. The fact you have high blood pressure suggests you are not part of the 20% who do not have insulin resistance. I suggest you watch one of Dr. Lustig's other videos on cholesterol and then ask for a copy of your latest lipid profile and calculate your triglyceride to HDL ratio. Good luck.
