I love 'The Substance' so much! The effects, acting, cinematography and music were incredible! The third act is definitely divisive but I loved it. That creature scared me so much, I had to watch that reveal through my fingers haha! And yes, Elizabeth is in Sue's body when she switches. But the problem that these two had is they both have confidence/self hatred issues; Elizabeth sees her old body and hates it, but then is jealous of her new body when they switch because of the success she put Sue through. Plus, despite the company constantly reminding Sue/Elizabeth that they are the same person, they never saw each other as the same as we see from the phone calls. So that connection was cut by herself. I apologize if I haven't explained this very well (i'm not always the best with explaining things), but I'm happy to talk about this more - I could talk about this film for ages haha! Really enjoyed the video too!

I think she was conscious while she was Sue, that's why she was so depressed when she had to be Elizabeth again. The thing is, young people are dumb and selfish and do things they shouldn't without a thought of how it will affect them later.
@WeWatchedAMovieАй бұрын
But she was shocked at what she was saying on the tv, right? Which would lead you to believe she wasn't conscious?
@jgarcia4721Ай бұрын
@WeWatchedAMovie that's true, there was more of a disconnect as it went on. But that also could be her trying to distance herself from the "old lady" she didn't want to be anymore.
@beerbloodbodyslams-horror4613Ай бұрын
@WeWatchedAMovie the director mentioned the subconscious was the same. I'd compare walking up with the other body to waking up with a hangover after getting drunk the night before. You experience the things you did the night before, some things might be clear but other things are fuzzy, some things are blacked out, especially the extreme things, if that makes sense. It could be a stretch, but that's how I interpret it.
@tjdw5251Ай бұрын
This was Film of the Year. Maybe the best Horror in a decade. Ah but thats the thing. It was Demi Moore the whole time. They were one, remember there is no separation, they're one. They transfer their consciousness. Demi Moore hits herself screaming at herself to stop being addicted to the younger body and taking time from herself. At then end before the final switch Margaret Qualley says "I can't go back in there". They aren't separate but she acts differently when within each body because she is reacting to how the outside world and society responds to her differently depending on how she looks. Remember this is an addiction movie. Being young is like a drug, like she is high. She is addicted to that experience, and becomes bitter whenever she is returned to the older body. But they are one, they are one consciousness. But it is showing how one can change depending on their circumstances and how they are perceived.

8/10 for me. It was the right type of croissant. I liked the rules they laid out of for the substance and the sort of world they build around it. The finale reminded me of Carrie (if it was a crypt episode that was shot by David lynch).

Sue and Elisabeth are 100% the same person. The old guy in the dinner recognized her because he’s the same guy that let her know about The Substance. She even remembered the biker dude when she walked into him. The whole movie is about self hatred. She’s old and washed up and wants to be Sue. But when she’s not Sue, she resents her as she’s just a reminder.
@WeWatchedAMovieАй бұрын
They really messed up on that element. I get the meaning of the movie but there's many times where she has no idea what Sue had said or done until she was awake.

I do wonder if people will grow to dislike this movie the more they think about it and the less fresh out of the theater they get. Just because there are good aspects of the film, doesn’t mean all of its issues should be blindly overlooked or written off as being on purpose somehow. I agreed with you thinking this would have worked way better as a short movie, but that’s a bad sign when you would have to cut out 90 minutes to make it better.

Mike if the guy from creep is holding you hostage in said bathroom blink twice....
@keithchristen8497Ай бұрын
In regards to the problem you were having, I think since they're one person, there is no separation. Right? So, she's still living vicariously through Sue, because they share the same consciousness. The reason she took the substance was to change her life. Well she can't do what she wanted in her old body anymore, or so she thinks, therefore Sue is born. But as she starts having fun in Sue, as Sue, she never wants to go back to Demi Moore's character. Because that body is limited, and this one isn't. Therefore, she ultimately gets the negative side effects from the Substance because she's neglecting herself by thinking she's separate.
@WeWatchedAMovieАй бұрын
Okay, if she's thinking she's seperate but isn't than I get it. That was pretty murky though for sure!
@keithchristen8497Ай бұрын

This is what confused me as well… I believe she is but as she continues to use the younger self longer she begins to create a delusion and addiction. Which in retrospect makes you forget your old self. That’s my take, but I think the film could’ve done a better job describing it because towards the end they’re both conscious and it really confused me.
