The Subtle Science of Saturation

I do love me a full-nerd session, and this is certainly one of those! Let's figure out what the word 'saturation' really means :)

My name is Anthony Chisnall. I'm a musician & songwriter.

I play the guitar (electric, acoustic, and bass), and record all of my own synth-based sounds myself too, but I can't sing very well (huge understatement!), and so my wife, Pauline, who has a lovely singing voice, has come to my rescue. You'll hear her on all of my songs.
All of my music is written in Steinberg's Cubase (currently Cubase Pro 13).
I try very hard to make my videos PRACTICAL and no-nonsense - if I don't use a feature, I'm not going to waste your time trying to sound like an expert on it! This is the stuff I use day-to-day, so I think that's also what you'd like to hear me talking about.

Going through the archives is always good fun.. not only to apply new skills or techniques we've learnt in the time away.. but also a good lengthy ear rest from tracks I've become bogged down in always gives me a fresh outlook ... especially those that I'd started to dislike from over exposure.

Absolutely! I've never subscribed to the 'only look forwards' philosophy... although I can appreciate why others might prefer that approach. Writing a song is just too hard to call it done at the first attempt :)

I also understand the issue that folk have with letting projects go out timely and not wasting time in getting more tracks released... but I'd rather make sure that everything I put out is 100% the best it can be, I don't see the point in throwing art out which is half baked or not considered to be as good as it possibly can... (probably why I never release anything) 😂

As usual, detailed and useful. I usually am afraid about saturation adding. Because I see many producers nowadays adding a lot trying to simulate old analog channel strips. And final products are extremely tiring tracks. This way I can detect real results

this in-depth videos are REALLY cool! keep it up! by any chance you have anything on Synths? as an mostly analog post 90s musician, I cannot get the grasp on them, especially when trying to resemble something remotely power-metal adjacent with their sawtooths, square leads.. and all that 😮‍💨
