On Today's Episode:
What if the key to success and happiness you imagine is totally wrong? Maybe you think success is to be chased and happiness will happen when you finally arrive at the destination you set out for years ago.
Matthew McConaughey, the Academy-Award winning actor and New York Times bestselling author of the incredible book about his approach to life, Greenlights, is sharing his wisdom, revelations, and lessons on what’s been true for him in the pursuit of happiness and levels of success most only dream of.
Achieving success and happiness in your life requires you to learn how to hold competing ideas at the same time. It’s knowing when to go all in and go hard for what you envision and what gives you joy and energy. It’s also knowing when to step back and appreciate where you are on your journey because those moments matter and they keep you grounded.
Matthew has created a free virtual event, The Art of Livin, to help others get the results they’re looking for in pursuit of happiness and success. In this conversation he reveals to Tom why the vision he often chased was rarely what he thought it would be when he started the pursuit.
Check out Matthew’s Free Virtual Live Event April 24th: tomlivin.com/
QUOTES:
“The headline I chase is always different than I thought it would be when I got there.”
“I got more results when I got obsessed with the process than I did when I was chasing results.”
“We have to start admitting more, not judging, [...] let’s admit the lies that we tell ourselves, let’s admit the lies that we believe the world tells us.”
“The more truly selfish we are to serve ourselves, the more we can serve others.”
“Commitment to get obsessed with making something work is a wonderful freedom.”

I hear ya. Unfortunately, this is easier to pull off when you're the male. I am male too and 52 and if I had to do it all over again (one daughter, 21), I'd have done a much better job at this age than at 30. But at least I didn't have her when I was 18, 20.

Tom, to your question of why it's so hard for people to say no, I think that inability is largely influenced by childhood. Saying no means I have a voice and if my voice was shut down during childhood, the thought of saying no becomes a trigger of inferiority, of shame. Our unhealed inner child thinks, "I am going to get in trouble-- scolded, for example-- if i speak up so I rather not speak up to avoid reprimand". It's like the elephant that was tied to a rope and after some time the rope was removed, and as big as the elephant was it would only walk up to the distant that rope would allow it. So ultimately the unprocessed trauma of rejection prevents many many many people from giving straight answers. And many people don't know what they want because they weren't brought up that way, to think for themselves and/or think critically. Both in the home and at school they were treated like cattle, hearded mindlessly to wherever the "leader" wanted.

I'm so happy Tom loved this and had him on the show! Love Mathew, love what he's doing inside his four walls at home. We need more of that. Heck, my parents divorced, and it affected my family for decades. It's not easy. In this world, we need family, family values, respect for our elders...just like what he's talking about. Our elders deserve a seat at the table, they are not to be shunned, and WE are not to be shunned for earning our wrinkles of wisdom. And we should take care of our older family members, not pawn them off to some facility so they can be taken care of by a bunch of strangers who don't really care for them and at worse abuse them.

Have you ever seen the air pick up dust and spin it in a tiny whirlwind at your feet? The twirling particles reveal the current. Without this demonstration, the wind might remain invisible and whir by unnoticed. Your habits demonstrate self-respect in the same way. Your inner regard is made manifest through your actions. The next time you sense a breeze upon your face, let it remind you of the power within. Remember each time you follow through on a habit, you’ve just given form to the current of self-respect that stirs inside.

Many says money wont give you happiness, but I heard one says "Give it to me and Ill let you know myself"
@MsTubeyou5
@MsTubeyou5 Жыл бұрын
Agreed, but only to a degree. If you have more than enough money, clearly a certain amount of stress and frustration is eliminated. Period. That's where I agree. However, I disagree when it comes to our individual, personal mindset. Money is very limited when it comes to the way we think. Sure, when a person wins the lottery, they're happy they won!! No doubt. But they choose to turn their back on the financial advice the professional accountants and lawyers have offered. The winner spends crazily because they have no concept of the bottom, when the $$$ runs out...basically, I'm trying to say that their mind can create misery, or happiness. We can choose no matter how much money we have, or not. We choose to seek help with our minds, or not. If we turn our backs on the positive, we're left with the negative, no matter how much money we have. Over time, the excitement of the WIN will wear off. Then we'll only be left with your minds. F the money. It is not an overall "happiness" fix. However, I sincerely hope money drops into your lap, so you can learn first hand. Seriously. Plus, if I am wrong, and the money helps you be a happier person, that in and of itself is a win. Your happiness makes this world a better place!! 💰💵💰💪🏼🧠💖💯 💰😇🙏🏼🕊️💖💯♾️

...I used an example of a lottery winner, but what of the savvy entrepreneur? That real money maker. What of him/her? Perhaps they work so hard at their ever evolving goals, that they lose sight of their loved ones. Now they're left with only work and money. Poor lonely soul. But they can 'buy' friends and 'loved ones,' right? Riiiiiight. Only they are not the real deal, are they? What's really sad, are the billionaires who can't trust ANYONE. Ask them how money has helped with their happiness (philanthropy, I hope). Moral...be happy. Laugh. Love. Feel joy at simply looking at a rose that has lost its petals in the Autumn chill, only to discover that a brownish green 'star' was left behind the top of the stem. That's where happiness really lives, my friend. 🌱🌹🥀🙏🏼🕊️☮️💖🌞♾️💯

In my 49 years I feel like the journey IS the goal . I know a lot of wealthy people who are constantly chasing something they are never going to find . There are people in mansions right now bored out of their minds who have fake friends and hire prostitutes . Money should never be the goal . Take care of your body and eliminate the things that cause you stress . Humans are inherently flawed . Getting the money , the house , the nice cars ,and the 2 kids is a very small part of the big picture. The faster people understand this the more beautiful life is .

I believe that when it comes to our fear of failure it isn't because we're too attached to the achievement itself but because we're too attached to the idea that our value, our right to exist and to be loved, is attached to the belief of conditional love. In other words, we don't want to fail because we believe that people won't see just a person who tried and failed but that that person is a failure itself, just not good enough. So why would anyone respect and love someone that can't achieve things in a world that values lives based on comparisons and achievements? It's important to shift that in our psyche and our society. It's important that we treat ourselves and others as valuable people independent of what they do and what they have. And I think that being a religious person can help in that because once you're a Christian, for example, you know that you should love others as He loved us. That others are just as valuable to the Father as we are.

That we all are so self serving, we all know that, that we should strive for better by doing this or that... we all know that... I am trying to see three small NEW things he said...?? Be nice and self serving at teh same time, build good will etc etc... it is all platitudes, but I guess if a famous actor says it or a priest or "god" then people finally listen... can people not do all that which THEY ALREADY KNOWWWW without these "pedestalized" people saying it...??

It's been quite a roller coaster ride, but I've grown and learned a lot about myself. The best thing is being able to interact and touch with the fans Human lives... I'm grateful for that. In return i grant you the privilege to view this channel biography and to follow the instructions for further communication with me. I wish you a nice day🌺

God..... what a thoroughly beautiful man. Most men that handsome are full of it. He's a very deep thinker and a believer. I can't imagine how he could improve himself very much more.

Comparison is the thief of joy. I remember in the 90s that saying wouldn’t mean much at all. What a different world we live in

Matthew is being himself. Love that he based this podcast on fighting world hunger. Let's vote in a viable President. Let us not vote for the best of inferior. Let us have the pick of two very intelligent, humanitarian individuals. Please.

The clip about Jung/Peterson and Christ is about chasing Christ as the ideal. The piece they are missing is what happens when Christ penetrates the heart through the Holy Spirit, it fills that God sized hole. We begin to feel peace and joy. It transforms us from the inside, heals the soul, changes our desires, our wants, thoughts and motivations. The things we used to love lose their meaning. What we considered small things now have much more meaning.

It's very easy to speak of beauty from the ivory towers, it's very easy to find solutions to problems you've never had.

I appreciate his opinion. What I don't appreciate is his humanitarian lack of our reality. Matthew doesn't relate to a person that lives on 1200 per month.
