We go back in time to the beginning of the Hellenistic Era examining the Diadochi, the rival generals, relatives, and friends of Alexander the Great who fought for control over his empire after his death, including a more accurate and optimized face re-creation of Alexander the Great.

Alexander the Great did create one of the largest empires in history. After his death his empire was divided among his Generals. His Generals should have realized their kingdoms would be STRONGER if they Maintained strong ALLIANCES with each other.They all fought together! Why turn and fight against each other? A waste of time, armies. They did not know years later the individual kingdoms would be conquered by the Romans. Had they maintained thelr kingdoms and alliances through their successors the outcome of Alexanders empire, the hellenistic world may have been different. Good video, Well done! Enjoyed it!

Without wars between Diadochi It would be boring. At the end, Greek culture maintained and survived on lands conquered by Alexander for hundreds of years even when Romans conquered eastern lands, soo it's not such a big loss after all

@@kingspore5000 Who the hell cares about boring?? They ended up under the YOKE of the Roman Empire. Had they not wasted time Fighting each other and remained allies with strong alliences and their successors did the same the hellenistic world may have been quite different. It was a big loss they lost their individual kingdoms.The U.S. have strong alliances with Great Britain, France, and other European Countries. We do not consider it boring. The U.S. would rather be boring and AT PEACE as oppose to Wars.

We Greeks have a bad tendency to fight each other. I don't want to stereotype and obviously this was not the main factor in that case, far from it. But I do think we have difficulties uniting, in general.

@@pitsinokaki It's that same strong, individualistic, independent, competitive spirit that generated the amazing number of gifted, unique individuals, who's names are still legendary today among the educated. Sadly the same thing that makes unity difficult also makes your people shine in a unique way amongst all the human tribes. Even this fact was described by great Greek thinkers, one's greatest strengths also can be weaknesses.

Spoiler alert: If you divide your kingdom to a group of people (sons, generals, etc) they'll always fight between them. It's a natural trait in humans, the greed.

Thanks so much for this! I've been fascinated by Alexander and the Diadochi for years. Imagine fighting with Alexander for 12 years, then another 40 years of fighting each other until they were killed off all but Ptolemy. And their descendants fought each other for centuries until the Romans conquered the Hellenic world.

Seleucus was on his way to seize greece (his motherland) to be part of his realm, but he was cowardly murdered and betrayed by Ptolemy Keraunos. I remember reading that Seleucus was mading a trip to his old homeland "Dura Europus", and he wasn't with his massive army...he was alone to remember his homeland. Later that idiot Ptolemy Keraunus army was killed and his army crushed by the celts, in the so called Celtic Invasion of Greece.

@Rajnasya Really? THAT'S INCREDIBLE!!! I'm a big fan of Chandragupta Maurya! He's one of the GREAT MEN of history! He overthrew a very powerful realm, the Nanda Empire was stronger than the celebrated Persian Empire, so strong, Alexander's army refused to fight it, performed mutiny, and forced Alexander to retreat. In relatively short order, Chandragupta rose, tore it down, replaced it with his own state, so powerful, Seleucus himself could not defeat it. Thus, he was the strongest ruler of the most powerful realm in the world at the time. His grandson Asoka definitely was, in his time say, around 250 B.C., before China became reunited and then later strengthened by the Han Dynasty, and well before the Romans controlled the entire Mediterranean region, the Mauryan realm was the greatest, most powerful state in THE ENTIRE WORLD!!! It would be awesome to be a descendant of such a powerful, capable man. Thank you for making me less ignorant regarding that a Mauryan still lives in India.

For a Greek they don't look similar to each other. It's easier for us to spot diffences when we look at something we're used to see. They all look like typical Greeks. I remember I went to China in the 90ies and my friends got me into the dorms for foreign students illegally by giving me the student ID of a French guy. I'm a blonde woman with green eyes, that guy hard dark brown eyes and brown hair. None of the Chinese staff ever realized that I wasn't the guy on the picture.

It could be many things, they didn't have medicine, hospitals or good doctors back then. It could have been pneumonia, as he used to do cold showers each day, or maybe got poisoned by his generals, as his rule was becoming too authoritarian, a big mistake as a Macedonian king was really "first among equals" and had to take advice from his nobles.

Just like Western European monarchs were having their portraits being drawn every 5-10 years or so of their lives, these ancient Greek aristocrats were also having their faces if not occasionally full body being drawn (we know ancient painters were doing portraits but all are lost). Very often they were sculpted in stone, usually as a bust. You need to remember that even middle-class people could afford a clay-based portrait, though it would be mostly the rich people who were interested in doing so rather than the average guy (for average people this would be seen often as vanity - but again people did it for their dead, to remember them). As such later sculptures would usually, not always, but usually, have enough material to work upon. Of course not just them but even the original artists who worked in front of these historical personalities, were embellishing their features so for all th realistic features of Hellenistic artwork you need to treat these as "photoshop" quality.

Alexander the Great died at 32 years of age and it certainly sounds a bit young even for those times. Reports say he was poisoned; we'll never know. But can anyone imagine someone in our time from 20 years old to 32 years old running the world's most powerful army and winning every battle, then dying in palace intrigue from an unkown illness. What our history tells us is certainly only what the successors of Alexander wished to pass down to us in a lot of ways for a lot of things they made sure would never be known.

@dasrite
@dasrite Жыл бұрын
No it doesn't, it says Seleucus was humbled and that Alexander despite winning some early victories turned back at his army's demand upon hearing about the empires and massive armies further east (which they never encountered as they turned back). Nobody defeated Alexander in battle and though the Indians came the closest they never actually beat him, he just turned back. And Seleucus' humbling must be taken with context that it happened in the middle of the wars of the Diadochi where Seleucus had far bigger problems than Chandragupta Maurya and his demands for a relatively small amount of land, the Daidochi threatened Babylon itself, so there was a prioritization process and Seleucus never committed seriously to battle the Mauryans, he was far more focused on battling the Daidochi and so at the first sign that this was gonna be a real war he folded right away rather amicably btw to focus instead on maintaining his empire to the west

@Devilyckos Con that's what they are, historical person's indeed. But as always in the hermeneutics of history there must be a fusion of horizons for understanding to take place (Hans Georg Gadamer, Philosophical hermeneutics ), in layman words, the cultural and historical gap of the world of the Diadochi and our modern world must bridged for cross-cultural and cross- historical understand to take place, so then if I use the sobriquet "rat"to characterize the boigraphics of the Diadochi, then I'm definitely in order to do so and I do so from a hermeneutical perspective (if you know what I mean). A detailed and thorough knowledge of their diplomatics, wars, domestic infightings ECT , combined with the underpinning hermeneutical understanding of the events definitely Justifies my contemporary contextualization of and characterization of those historical figures as rats.

@Devilyckos Con Rat, informal meaning..a betrayer, double-crosser, a person of duplicitous (deceitful) behavior. This description aptly fits the international and domestic politics of the Diadochi between themselves, (from a modern standpoint).

@Devilyckos Con My friend, I totally agree with you. Panagiotis did a portrait on Alexander the Great, go back to it and read my comment where I stated that I believe, based on the literary evidence at hand, that he died from quartan fever. Quartan fever is a form of Malaria caused by the bite of the female anopheles mosquito.

@@zazazazizizi6276 Macedonians ARE Greeks. They belong to the Doric tribe, same as the Spartans. So do the people in Epirus. If you visit these places, even Sparta, which is south, you will see people looking like that. In general, the inhabitants of the Greek mainland are more fair than those living in the islands.

@Johnd D Don't hide behind you stupid argumentation : you speak Bulgarian, so you are bulgar. 1): Bulgarian people talk a kind of slavo-macedonian or a slavo-thracian because when Bulgar people arrived in macedonia, we were already talking a kind of slavic linguage and bulgar people then called that linguage Bulgarian linguage.... The truth will shine again and you must accept the fact : Antic Macedonian are not at all greek...

@@zazazazizizi6276 Nope, ancient Greeks were very clear on the fact that they considered Macedonians fellow Greeks, a part of the Doric tribe, to be precise. Same as Spartans, or the people who settled in Doris.

Wow I think the Greek sculptures are much easier to transform into these images, for such is the clarity and details of what those men looked like in real life
