@@RareEarthSeries Last week we found a little chickadee on the ground, frozen to the snow (it was below -20 °C with a bitter north wind...Winnipeg man...the cold isn't all hype here :) ) with a damaged wing (I guess her wing got hurt and she couldn't keep herself moving, so she just sat there, melting the snow until her body heat couldn't keep it warm and it froze). So we took her in, and warmed her up and are feeding her and giving her time so that her wing might heal (I don't think it's broken, but it isn't quite right). Winter is a tough time for little birds; if she can't fly properly to eat seeds from the bird feeders people leave out (with most other food sources covered by snow), she'd probably starve. But she has started to chirp at us, and isn't afraid anymore, so I guess we've found our Larry too.

When i was a kid i had a Larry, her name was Bill. One spring i spotted Bill leading a tiny troop of five little kits across the retaining wall in my backyard. Her favorite snack was an egg. I would hide them around the yard for her to hunt down as i watched laying prone atop the roof outside my window. I can't remember if Bill stopped coming around year after year or if i stopped looking for her as i grew older.. either way she lives on in my memory, just as one day we will all live on in the memories of our friends and family. I've been doing a lot of thinking recently about memories in general, and how we honor those who came before us or who've left earlier than we have. If anyone's got a good book or media recommendation for this topic, I'd love to hear them. Hope everyone had time this last year to make happy memories despite all the hardship. If you didn't, tonight I'll raise my glass to you and to your new year, and the memories you will make. May they be merry. -Cheers

Good on ya. If you really want to help out wildlife clear out the scrub around your property and start planting fruit and nut trees and shrubs - go for a biodiverse range - and pollinator plants for the bees and butterflies and other beneficial insects. Not only does it help them it's helps scrub carbon from the atmosphere and you get the benefit of having some organic fruits and nuts yourself. Harvest what you need to so you can parcel it out to the critters over the winter and it's win-win for all of you! I know because I do this myself. I have several dozen chipmunks, squirrels, bunnies, a possum and a skunk who are all regulars at my place year round. Where they really need it and appreciate it is winter - I'm east of Hogtown an hour. I wish more people would plant these things everywhere. Grow some cuttings and go plant them in parks and trails and stuff like Johnny Appleseed.
