Larry's IG updates made my 2020 bearable. Sincerely. As an American, I watched the numbers climb and climb and the heal public take no notice, and when I was feeling overwhelmed, I'd go to my social media pacifier and nearly every time there was a short video of Larry being adorable. Thanks, Evan, for all the smiles in a shitty year, and for topping it off with a full length Rare Earth video. @@RareEarthSeries Last week we found a little chickadee on the ground, frozen to the snow (it was below -20 °C with a bitter north wind...Winnipeg man...the cold isn't all hype here :) ) with a damaged wing (I guess her wing got hurt and she couldn't keep herself moving, so she just sat there, melting the snow until her body heat couldn't keep it warm and it froze). So we took her in, and warmed her up and are feeding her and giving her time so that her wing might heal (I don't think it's broken, but it isn't quite right). Winter is a tough time for little birds; if she can't fly properly to eat seeds from the bird feeders people leave out (with most other food sources covered by snow), she'd probably starve. But she has started to chirp at us, and isn't afraid anymore, so I guess we've found our Larry too.

When i was a kid i had a Larry, her name was Bill. One spring i spotted Bill leading a tiny troop of five little kits across the retaining wall in my backyard. Her favorite snack was an egg. I would hide them around the yard for her to hunt down as i watched laying prone atop the roof outside my window. I can't remember if Bill stopped coming around year after year or if i stopped looking for her as i grew older.. either way she lives on in my memory, just as one day we will all live on in the memories of our friends and family. I've been doing a lot of thinking recently about memories in general, and how we honor those who came before us or who've left earlier than we have. If anyone's got a good book or media recommendation for this topic, I'd love to hear them. Hope everyone had time this last year to make happy memories despite all the hardship. If you didn't, tonight I'll raise my glass to you and to your new year, and the memories you will make. May they be merry. -Cheers

Thank you. We live in the woods in Eastern Pennsylvania, near Allentown. We feed and interact with many of the wild creatures. We have Rockina the Raccoon, and her pals. We have a feral cat we call Miss Thing. We build them places to sleep, also. We feed all of the birds, deer, foxes, opossums, and whatever. They give us much joy, and just like you, it made 2020 a much better time for us. Anyone who is kind to animals, in my opinion, is a good person. I will continue to enjoy your videos.

Good on ya. If you really want to help out wildlife clear out the scrub around your property and start planting fruit and nut trees and shrubs - go for a biodiverse range - and pollinator plants for the bees and butterflies and other beneficial insects. Not only does it help them it's helps scrub carbon from the atmosphere and you get the benefit of having some organic fruits and nuts yourself. Harvest what you need to so you can parcel it out to the critters over the winter and it's win-win for all of you! I know because I do this myself. I have several dozen chipmunks, squirrels, bunnies, a possum and a skunk who are all regulars at my place year round. Where they really need it and appreciate it is winter - I'm east of Hogtown an hour. I wish more people would plant these things everywhere. Grow some cuttings and go plant them in parks and trails and stuff like Johnny Appleseed.

I had a relationship with a racoon once too. She left her kids with me for three days when she needed to find a new home. It is a wonderful gift and yes it is for us more than them, I think. But it is a gift few people realize IS nature and natural if we let ourselves see it. Most humans don't. THAT is the sad thing I feel. I have good relations with many animals thanks in part to Smacker (the aforementioned racoon) and Petey (rabbit) and all those precious neighbours that lived in my back yard. Thankfully I can see, really see, nature... I am very grateful for them. Great video and thank you. I needed that. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I think you should visit the Solomon Islands when all this gloom and doom is over and find that special story that moves the heart. I went there back in 1990 to visit a friend who was in the peace corps. The Islands have experienced WWII. They even have a native quasi religion called the Cargo Cult. Ah, the KZbin algorithm is a harsh mistress. Took me over a month to find this gem, and only because I had to search for the name of some phallic canadian town. I am happy I did tho. It's nice to see the same Evan there still, making the most out of unusual experiences. It must have been harsh to be a youtuber who makes travel videos in 2020. I hope you are alright and that it hasn't gotten too dark for you. Keep finding meaningful things to do like Larry, both you and us will be happier like that.

Absolute gold! I think many of us needed this year to be able to slow down, reflect, and find different directions. We were the privileged that could isolate and didn't have to interact with people daily and I think, rather I hope, many of us also reflected on that, too.

Canadian travel documentary youtuber goes crazy, forms bonds with raccoons. I really missed your videos this year, but I appreciated all the small twitter updates. Thought about your videos on the Karabakh a lot. I also sometimes wondered how your series might one day cover the scenes of the protests here in America. I know that must have been hard, being stuck on an island in Canada with your camera, however scenic, while 2020 happened around the world. Thank you for sharing Larry with us.

OMG! There is something really rediculous about what's going on at 8:15. Think about it. Chris has been to space, multiple times, for long periods of time. And yet, there he is building school bus props for a raccoon that his adult son has befriended. Love it. So good.

Great story. One time we saved some orphaned racoons. We little by little left them outside to experience and one day they went away. We thought we would never see them again, but one night at 2 am there was a knocking at our door and the babes came running inside the hose to say hello, get something to eat and left to never return. They just let us know they were okay and still thought about us.
