Very underrated episode, one of my favorites. What really elevates it for me is Tennant's performance once he's possessed by the sun creature. One of very few moments where the Doctor's truly terrified and vulnerable, and he makes it so palpable for the viewer.

I think it was actually 42 minutes long on first transmission in the UK. Plus it's a real time episode - so the countdown is (roughly) running to time through the episode. Plus if you know your hitchhikers '42' is the answer to life, the universe and everything (and Douglas Adams worked on dr Who in classic who). I am not a classic who nerd, but there were at least 5 male companions I can think of, off the top of my head - someone will fill you in, but Adric, Turlow and Jamie are three. Then Peter Purvis' character and the one whose actor died recently aged almost 100 from the very early days.

Mama Martha isn't scheming. She was told the man her daughter is traveling with is dangerous. She doesn't know any differently, so she's trying to help her daughter.
@judithturner1593Ай бұрын
Yes, but I also started getting the feeling (at the end of that phone call) that Mama was also beginning to get suspicious of that Saxon team... just a bit... because they were more concerned with finding the doctor than her daughter's safety.

It wasn't our sun, just a sun. But it is really interesting that it is alive, and that it felt pain from being "scooped". I always loved this episode. Also, I definitely do not see that look from the Doctor as jealous or whatever of Martha, rather that he usually just moves on without thinking too much about the pain he's been through. Like he sometimes says "I'm always alright", even though he very much was not during this story. Anyways, great reaction, and I look forward to more!

@NicoleM_radiantbabyАй бұрын
Yep, he's traumatized, but being the Doctor, doesn't want to admit it. You kinda get a clue, though, when he offers for their next trip to be 'ice skating on the mineral lakes of Kur-ha' -- he wants to be somewhere cold instead to balance out the extreme heat of being possessed by the sun. (There's some really good fanfic about this that I've read, mostly dealing with the passive way the Doctor deals with such things, by going to a cold destination, instead of letting himself sit with how freaked out he was by the whole thing).

Fun facts 1) the Ood were in the storyline/early drafts of this episode but it was decided the ep was too crowded. 2) Despite the in-world high temperatures, this episode was actually filmed in January, in an abandoned factory in South Wales. The cast were FREEZING. Baby oil was used on their skin to make them look as if they were sweating. The boiling steam is actually their breath in the air in front of them. 😂 P.S. Much as I love David Tennant (my Doctor 😍), I'd like to see more love for Freema when you're watching the opening credits/generally. She's a fantastic actor, playing probably the most adult journey of the RTD companions. This is no shade on Billie/Catherine/Millie. And to those who are saying she's not in the same league as the others as an actress, the Royal Shakespeare Company disagree. She's playing one of the female leads in Twelfth Night this Christmas. I so want to go and see it, but am making two big theatre trips next year. Anyway, rant over. Love your content. 💚
@HerHollynessАй бұрын
Freema is great but she hasn’t had as much post-Who success as the others. She did Law and Order in the US for a couple of years and I guess she mostly does stage work now but I just heard her voicing a Christmas ad for Boots and thought, “Oh no, Freema, you’re better than this.”
@cooluncle4242Ай бұрын

@oliverturner7365Ай бұрын
@@HerHollyness nobody's above adverts. David did Trust a Trader last year. 😉 In all seriousness, Billie and Catherine were big stars when they were cast (in very different ways), and so had whole identities separate from DW to build on, whereas Freema was an unknown. I think that has a lot to do with it. And again, to pre-empt accusations of hate, Donna is a fave of mine, and very few actors have the ability to make me cry (in a good way) like Billie Piper.

I feel like this episode is a bit underrated, but it is a good classic sci-fi story. It gets overshadowed somewhat by the rest of series 3, which is great. It's a 2D-animated collection of shorter adventure snippets that together make a full story, initially released one by one before being collected into an episode-length omnibus. While it has no exact continuity placement, it certainly takes place during season three after this episode and before the finale.

I do not know of any other story that is in real time. Most stories have gaps or things you never see because no writer includes every detail. (I always presume unknown amount of real time has passed if any TV show or movie. So dialog or date subtitles important to include.) Plus we know that TV episodes are normally recorded in a schedule, more complicated if there is location shooting. Background music important here! Get to know the themes. By now you can enjoy the Series 1 and Series 2 album. 42 You will have to start with any Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy production. It started as a radio series that was written and aired one episode at a time. It sounds like it was made up as it went because it was! There were novels released. Then a TV series. Also a cool computer game. (My first PC game, in fact.) There is audio readings on KZbin of all of the novels. The latest production was a movie. The novels have the most content.

Back when companions actually earned their keys and weren’t just given them willy nilly. 🤣 I always had difficulty with Martha’s mum; it was too easy for her to dislike The Doctor but I also can see it from her side. We always want The Doctor to be okay, though! We can’t stand him suffering. It was nice to see Martha as the hero this episode. Usually The Doctor is the one to ultimately save the day, but The Doctor was the saved this episode as opposed to the saviour. This series, Martha found herself in a lot of sticky situations and wasn’t able to save herself.

"42" is one of my least favorite "Doctor Who" episodes, (from my personal TOP-20 worst "Doctor Who" episodes Ugo at this time surprisingly already have seen 7th "Tooth and Claw", 5th "42", 4th "The Unquiet Dead", 2nd "The Idiot's Lantern" and 1st "Fear Her"). But I must admit - watching it edited down to ~26 minutes, with someone else's reaction and commentary made it slightly better and a bit more watchable. P. S. Ugo already familiar with works of all four main "Doctor Who" writers - Russel T. Davies, Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss and Chris Chibnall. But how incredibly ironic the fact Chris Chibnall had better representation of his writing talent on "Torchwood". It will never stop amazing me.

the doctor is wonderful in many ways, but he’s also so egotistical, and the loss of rose, whom he did see romantically, doesn’t help that at all. he’s ecstatic that martha fancies him, the attention she gives him fuels that ego. that’s why he keeps her hanging on in that way, and even flirts back at times. so when she kisses someone else, he’s jealous! even though he’s not actually interested in her!!
@joshuaverran9443Ай бұрын
He's not interested because he's a-sexual it's weird that a 900 year old ancient alien would be interested in young earth girls anyway.

I never read it this way at all. I'm still not convinced the doctor was romantically interested in Rose although he obviously cared for her. I think he liked Martha and although he likes showing off, I don't think he likes the romantic attention. He just likes the company and having someone to impress and I don't think he fully realises how much she seems to like him. You have to remember the doctor doesn't like opening up about his feelings and he'd just been through a traumatic experience. Just my take on it.
@lydiarodgersАй бұрын
@cooluncle4242 interesting, and i take in your point. but i do think that was russell’s intention. i don’t think he could help himself when it came to romance between the doctor and his companion. david’s doctor is full of himself, and there are many examples of this that i can’t mention as i don’t want to write spoilers. he’s very rarely oblivious to someone flirting with him and is very aware of his looks and charm. martha longing for him is perfect, it fills the void

@lydiarodgers all fair points, coming from classic who, I've never thought of the doctor being involved in anything romantic, but 10 was the one who broke the mould and enjoyed a bit of female attention. I didn't enjoy all the romantic melodrama, which is why I enjoyed the next companion more.
