Je crois que Louis XIV a dit: "L'etat c'est moi." Mais je ne suis pas certain, car mon grand-pere n'a pas eu la chance de m'enseigner l'histoire de France pendant le Grand Siècle. Tous les 72 années de Louis XIV étant le Roi étaient les plus durs années en Angleterre. La Guerre Civile Anglaise, le regne de Oliver Cromwell, la Restoration, la Revolution Glorieuse, et le fin d'une dynastie (Anne est morte en 1714, Louis XIV est mort en 1715).

Because that was Louis XVI, which was rather like Louis IV divided by two (or by more). The people would eventually made that a physical reality in case any had any doubt.

@@johnnotrealname8168 Louis XVI was a weak absolute monarch who was unable or unwilling (or both) to reform a polity ravaged by an extremely deep crisis, in which massive debt piled up but all taxes fell on the shoulders of the poor, while the rich were subsidized by the state, so they would be quiet (as we know now, the lesser of possible unrest problems that Louis the Halved would face). That was the nature of the regime inherited from Louis XIV (minus Canada and Louisiana). I'm not sure what exactly did he "decentralize" (France was not really centralized back then, centralization came by the hand of the Revolution and its obsession with uniformizing everything by a single pattern) but clearly he faced the inability of the system and his own management as absloute monarch (dictator by birthright) to make things work.

Ah yes, L’état, c’est moi. The peak of absolutism. Not enlightened absolutism, that’s Jospeh II, but there is no man who embodies the idea of Divine Right more then Louis XIV.

An interesting fact you might not know : Louis XIV was a genius in "moneymaking scheme". He sold aristocrats the lucrative official jobs such as tax collector to pay for rubbish collection for a vast sum of 75,000 livres. Louis not only earned 75,000 livres and the share of taxes, but also an "annual payment" from the tax collector for keeping his job. As the historian Stephen Clarke commended, "it was win-win-win (for the Sun King)." He sold licenses to townsmen for permission to build a high-class bathhouse (a sort of 17th century urban spa). These licenses sold so well that Louis decided to double the amount of licences from 200 to 400. 200 existing license owners were so horrified at the idea (more competition meant less profit) that they voluntarily "contributed" additional 100,000 livres to have the edict withdrawn. Even within his opulent palace of Versaillies, he had to make money - in 1681, he organized a "national lottery" (requiring his courtiers to offer generous sums of money, of course) nominally in aid of the poor, obliging his couriers to join the game by promising them large reward if they get the prize (of course, those who knew how to flatter Louis had much greater chance to earn it). Louis "surely" won the main prize of 100,000 livres for every time (blatant cheating !) - however, he thought that such a "blatant cheating" was no good for future lotteries, so he humbly refused to accept the money and put it back, yet his wife, son, brothers all earned substantial amount of money in lucky draw !

Et, bien sur, je besoin de pratique ma français…Comme j’ai disais, personne ici parles le français, alors, je laisse des commentaires longs. Evidement, j’essaie toujours d’apprendre le français. Oui, j’ai le français avant, à la fac, mais il y a longtemps; 25 ans. En décembre, ce sera trois ans d’études français moi-même. Même si je ne parle jamais couramment... C’est bien. Je trouve que c’est amusant, et ca stimule mon cerveau. il y a un dicton tchèque ( Czech proverb) “ Apprendre une nouvelle langue, obtenir une nouvelle âme.” Je suis bien d’accord. C’est quelque chose que je l’ai me sens/senti au debut…Ca me fait me sens jeune encore, comme un enfant ou gamine. C’est comme être renaissance. And I mean that in the most literal sense possible. Je dois changer à anglais…Les mots se sortir de mon bouche/ l’esprit plus vite pour mon niveau de français. I’m getting old, and a couple years ago, I might have been preparing myself for death…But NOW, NOOOO! I honestly feel like I’m going to live to be 101. I can’t imagine dying, not because I’m a deluded fool; I know we all have to die, but through French, and the mental stimulation it has brought me, just as was stated by that “new language = new soul/mind” Czech proverb I mentioned. My NEW mind/soul, has made me a virtual French child, and a child can’t think of death…A child is new life. It has a world to explore, and a life to live. That’s how I feel. That’s why I said language learning stimulated my mind. I can almost literally feel my mind bristle, or vibrate, or exhibit a ratiating glow, like a Saint’s halo. I named this virtual French mental child that I like to speak of, “Voltaire Lafyette.” lol. Why Voltaire? Well, come on, Is an explanation really needed for that choice, but I’ll give two reasons: 1. He generally speaks the truth and loves freedom, especially free speech, and 2, because he’s really funny. And I chose Lafayette, because Lafayette was French, but he was also one of the first Americans. He was an American Revolutionary War hero and without his assistance in getting the French Navy into the war, we would have probably lost the war, well that’s what they say… I wasn’t there so I wouldn’t know. He’s more deserving of US citizenship than 90 percent of the idiots we have in this country today. Alors, j’ai choisi le deuxième prénom, Lafayette; je suis American après tout. Until 2019, I lived free, and that was partially grâce à lui. Well, MY little Voltaire has only began to walk around and explore this new French world….I can’t think of death, even though I craved death most of my life. I can’t help but have a VERY strong feeling that I’ll be around for forty more years which will put me around the “century” mark. My God father “so to speak,” was Aristotle, and my favorite “uncle” is Arthur Schopenhauer, for I feel I am the child, born of the two. I’m not a deluded fool…I may be an idiot, but I’m not deluded. It was Aristotle, via his Nichomachian Ethics, that made me realize that I should seek to fulfill my “telos,” if I wanted to experience happiness. SO, after I REALISTICALLY considering my strengths and weakness, my natural aptitudes, my likes and dislikes, and what I could "realistically" accomplish, AND, of course, what was also "in accordance with my 'telos,' " or what NATURE intended for me. I chose to learn Latin, and I loved it, but then I switched to French because I had it in college, thus, I already knew a little bit of the basics. II’m getting older, I have to play the best odds for success. So, I chose French. What was the outcome of my choice? ( je veux dire, cet neauveau langue j’ai choisi d’apprendre, ou essayer d’apprendre)? I can tell you for a FACT, that I have indeed experienced periods of euphoria, or what Aristotle called “eudaemonia.” And It is FUCKING AWESOME. I’m actually happy for the first time in my life. I’m not exaggerating. It’s crazy how it all worked out. Aristotle really is “THE master of those who know.” as Dante called him. He changed my life for the better, 2,400 years after he lived; that’s amazing. It’s as if his hand reached out from the grave, tapped me on the shoulder, and then pointed in the direction I should go. When we think about things like the whole comedy of glass - first kidnapping Venetian mirror makers and then figuring out a way to make huge mirrors (24 inches was a huge mirror when the Venetians were Eurpos's mirror makers and the images were distorted to save money Colbert got the French working hence the HUMUNGOUS MIRRORS of versailles (Ahemm...size matters....:-) or even better all those Acadamie Royal....art and sculpture etc that created training programs centered on the formation of the painter....then paths to advancement etc. These academie Royals de.....[discipline of choice] are institutions that influence French culture to this day. You all value the arts and intellectual life more than any other European nation. Many but not all Irish people do too - France helped us against our old Enemy many times - IF one intends an absolute monarchy I cannot imagine anyone serving his country better than Louis XIV between himself and Colbert the list of accomplishments are staggering. The libertines and their psychopathic (arguably) elective cynicism did not come until the Rococo - Louis Soleil was still from the Baroque era.....Worst of all, IF you are going to do Absolute Monarchy do not chose a loser like XV or someone weak and clearly not up to the big decisions like poor Louis XVI. Competence is serious;u undervalued regardless of the type of government......Thanks again for a wonderful piece. In the reign of Louis XIV, Spain lost control of modern day Haiti in the west to France and kept the modern day Dominican Republic in east. The 1697 Treaty of Ryswick was the result of that. That's why Hispaniola Island is divided up into this day (despite several reunifications such as in 1795 and 1822).

Hey, great work! Is that Louis Condé, the same "prince of Condé" that failed at the siege of the city of Hondarribía in1638, just in front of Henday? I was glad that a bit of the local history of this part of the frontier traspased to your great work! You know, here in the Basque Country the history is quite complex, not only because of our local differences but also deocasional french invasions (thanks to us, the peope of Irún han Hondarribía, not verry harmfull to the whole province,but also because of the interesting interactions betwen French and Navarre kings. For example popular history sais that de victory of 1522 in the day of San Marcial was over the french, well actually they were a mix of northern navarre people, german mercenaries and frenchmen. So yeah! Quite an interesting place to be! We really have to thank the french for the failure of the prince of Condé of 1638 and the victory at san Marcial of 1522 . thanks to that we had an excuse to mantain symbolically the traditional Charted Alardes (shows of the local militias) that other cities lost to the centralisation of the 19th century. Nowadays the cities of the frontier vibrate with gun fire and musique every 30th of june and 8th of september in a great celbration of peace, victory and memory of our past. Websters dictionary defines Absolutism as the political theory that absolute power should be vested in a single individual. This complex political theory came into existence in the modern nation state of France at the end of the 16 th century essentially beginning with the rise of the Bourbon Dynasty in 1572 when Henry of Navarre was crowned the King of France making him the first Bourbon Monarch of France. The accession of Henry IV to the throne of France spelled the beginning of the end of decentralized feudal state of the Kingdom of France ruled under the Valois, Direct Capetian, and Carolingian Dynasties of what we today call France. Under these previous Dynasties supervision, the actual power of the monarchy had dwindled due to the feudal system of government which gripped most western states during the Medieval age well into the early modern period. The partitioning of royal lands to lords, vassals, the church, and knights fundamentally made the monarch weak and rely on the guidance of the vassals in order to effectively run the state. Fundamentally in France until 1789 French society was relegated three fundamental classes. These classes were the First Estate (The Clergy), The Second Estate (The Nobility), and The Third Estate (The Bourgeoise, Guild Members, and Nearly 25 Million Peasants). Under this system of Government The First Estate were the members of society who prayed for the King and his Subjects, The Second Estate were the members who fought for the King and for the Kingdom, and The Third Estate who worked the King’s land and served the King. Under this system of government, the First and Second Estates were fundamentally exempt from paying since the First Estate argued that all property was owned by the Church, and the Second Estate argued that they paid their tax in blood when called to battle. At the head of the Government at least in theory was the Monarch which sat above each of The Estates only god being at the top of all government functions. One of Lynn White Jr’s fundamental arguments in “The Historical Roots of Our Ecologic” exists as the principle that because Western Society clearly adheres to Judeo-Christian values that Men are fundamentally above the natural world that He (men as a whole) has the right to exploit the world as much as He wants since He fundamentally sits above all non-human aspects. Since The Kingdom of France existed as a fundamentalist Christian Theocracy ruled by an Absolutist Monarch it allowed the Monarch to create a situation where the institution itself could exploit the land for all its resources since in practice The Monarch owned all the means of production in this absolutist Christian theocracy. The argument provided by Lynn White Jr clearly predicted a situation in France where an ecologic disaster was inevitable due to the Monarchs consistent lust for natural materials due to the Monarchy’s inherit Christian values of Man’s supremacy. Clearly under the government under the House of Bourbon until 1789 was incompatible in treating the environmental with respect. To truly understand the lack of respect to the environment caused by the absolutist monarch of a Judeo-Christian theocracy during the Reign of Louis XIV we must first discuss the monumental reign that was the reign of Louis XIV during the 17th and early 18th centuries. The reign of Louis XIV began in 1643 when he was just 5 years old and would end just months before his 76th birthday in 1715. Under the marathon reign of 72 years Louis XIV created a system of government that in all reality was controlled directly by the Monarch in all aspects of Authority. This gradual grab for authority from the French Monarchy began with the death of Louis XIV’s chief minister Cardinal Mazarin in 1661 wherein which Louis XIV declared himself his own Prime Minister until his death in 1715. Under the direct authority of the monarch, Louis XIV took the opportunity to declare 4 monumental scale wars during his 72 year reign that would inevitably bankrupt the state, but would lead to near French hegemony on the European Continent until the final defeat of Napoleon in 1815 where a Bourbon Monarch (a direct descended of Louis XIV) would be placed back on the throne of France. Since Louis XIV claimed that the monarch had divine authority Louis XIV would eventually use the entirety of the French treasury to declare war on Europe and continue to build several large palace complexes (especially the palace at Versailles). The Monarch’s ability to fundamentally extract the wealth from the Third Estate to fund The Wars of Louis XIV as well as his extravagant court life at Versailles and several poor winters in the early 18th century led to several famines that killed up to 15 percent of the French Population in just 10 years. Clearly the Monarchs belief that he alone wielded power and that god gave the king that right then clearly the King is above nature and man and has the right exploit nature and people in order to satisfy his own needs. This system of government clearly led to a situation where the environment and the people of France were not treated in an ethical or respectful way. Today we should visit Versailles and all the magnificent buildings built by Louis XIV and remember that these monuments to his own glory were built off the back of the nation’s peasantry and the peasantry’s extracted wealth. As we visit Versailles today as so many tourist do with our modern capabilities that this magnificent piece of western architecture is a symbol of a Tyrannical, Archaic, and Unjust ruled by a Monarch absolutely out of touch with his subjects.

In terms of the scope of Louis XIV's conquests in Europe they look quite modest. Even negligible. Certainly when comparing them for example to those of Napoleon. In North America, on the other hand, there seems to have been an impressive expansion, though much less is being talked about. Perhaps because it did not involve a war against significant forces like in Europe or perhaps like the war of the Spaniards against the Aztec and Inca empires. Looking forward to your reference.

I think for his time, his conquests were quite impressive - Napoleon's era was a significantly different time and frankly, the French revolution and Napoleon kind of started this era of "large conquests". In Louis XIV's times, annexing just one town was a big deal. Regarding North America, yes, France acquired a lot of land but very sparsely populated. It remained sparsely populated, which is one of the reasons France did so poorly during the 7 years war. Merde!
