Louis XIV really created his personal hell at Versailles. His form of absolutism was not really suited for the long term as it required a strong King but as his successors proved, that will not always be the case. The nobility still had their privileges and reasserted themselves as soon as Louis XIV's body was cold during the Orleanist Regency. I really hope you cover the Orleanist Regency as well as Louis XV's reign(especially the issue of Parlements) as both are important for understanding the causes that led to Louis XVI and thus the French Revolution.

I've seen multiple sources claim the French army stood at 400,000 men. But that implies that the French could deploy about half a million men into the field. Correct me if I'm wrong but it's thought the field army stood at between 250-300k while about 100-150k were employed to garrison the Ne Plus Ultra forts.

France likes to do things differently ;) It comes from the purchase of le Dauphiné, which is the region just north of where I'm from, by the future King of France in the 14th century. Also Princes are rulers Principalities (just as Dukes-Duchies/Counts-Counties). It just happens that in England, it's customary for the King's heir to be given the title of Prince of Wales. Then Disney came along and made the Prince/Princess thing popular.

@xavierlecaros16233 жыл бұрын
To be fair; over time money and resources were increasingly channeled from the Navy and into the army. The French navy did have some successes during the Nine Years War like at Beachy Head (1690). But over time because they didn't invest nearly as much the Anglo-Dutch navies gained the upper hand.
