The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

One of the many things I like about your videos is how you point out where exactly in the distance the troops were. Great!

I still say that Longstreet was one of their best generals. To me, he was a realist when reality was frequently suppressed by emotion.

As northern radical republicans pretty much wrote the history, and made Longstreet a hero, you are pretty much parroting the standard northern narrative. He's the one southerner, northerners found, who would criticize Lee. And for that, he was rewarded handsomely. But of course, neither side had too many good Generals. So, being a top ten General isn't a major feat when the bench was so barren of good Generals.

Agreed. Proof lies at Gettysburg where IMO if Lee had listened to Longstreet Gettysburg would not have been the disaster it inevitably became for the South. As a caveat it is quite possible that Longstreet appeared to be as good as he appeared because he had the good fortune to be assigned to a great commander who reigned him in when it was necessary to do so.

Love these videos. Next best thing to being there on the field. When I lived in the D.C. suburbs I could do day trips to Antietam, Gettysburg, etc. Now I'm too far away for that, so these videos rekindle great memories and provide new insight to those hallowed grounds.

Had the pleasure and experience of spending a couple of nights in the middle of the battlefield. In the early nineties, the Piper farm was a B & B. Slept in Lomgstreets BR Reported to have been used during the battle.

Garry, you and your colleagues always do a terrific job. Love how you all dissect these battles. Thanks. Now a silly question: I'm curious, if you could go back in time, what Civil War battle or moment in a particular battle would you most want to have witnessed?

Definitely to Hampton Roads those days March 8, when CSS Merrimack (it Virginia) came down river and sunk the USS Cumberland, the 9th when she and the USS Monitor fought, thru the 11th(?) when she was destroyed. That must have been an amazing series of events.

What’s the other lost opportunity in Antietam where the Union could have finished the Army of North Virginia by committing 10000 more men? I only know the comment made by Longstreet about the situation before Antietam, that McClellan should not have fought at Turner's Pass but should have instead poured his troops through Crampton's Gap upon McLaw's and Anderson's rear.

Your visualization needs work. Show an overhead map with arrows indicating movements per hour, per day, whatever the time increment is best but get rid of roadside views with someone pointing out into nowhere saying troops came this a way. It doesn’t work
