The Sunset Chair by Helinox [Review]

We’ve been using the Chair One for 6+ years so we were psyched to try out a new style of chair by Helinox. The Sunset Chair by Helinox is everything we love about the Chair One but a little bit bigger and more comfortable. While a little bit bigger and heavier, we are digging the added comfort of the larger chair back and slightly higher seat height.
Of course one of the key features of Helinox chairs across the line is that they take up little space when packed up. This is perfect for our lifestyle whether we are traveling in our daily driver, toy hauler, or van. People are often amazed when we pull out such a rad chair from such a small package. Packed up, the Sunset Chair is 4.5 in x 18.5 in x 5.5 in and weighs in at 3 lbs 4 oz. The Sunset Chair has a 320 pound carrying capacity. I probably won’t hit that weight in my lifetime. However, I am 190 pounds and sometimes Hank (90 pound hound) likes to crawl up into my lap and with the added weight capacity of the Sunset Chair, I can feel confident that when he does we won’t stress the chair.
We’ve seen first hand just how well Helinox chairs hold up and we have no doubt the Sunset Chair will be consistent. We’ve had our Chair Ones for 6+ years and they are still in pretty dang good shape. The fabric is a little dirty and the cases look like they’ve taken some abuse (they have) but overall they are still 100% usable.
Not only do we like the higher seat height of the Sunset Chair (14in off the ground at the lowest point), the added back support is awesome. It’s less of a camp chair feel and more of an outdoor dining chair feel. You can also rest your head comfortably. Throw a jacket or two in the Sunset Chair’s carrying case and you have yourself a nice pillow for ultimate comfort. If you don’t like improvising, you can buy an air or air+foam pillow accessory from Helinox that Velcro’s onto the pillow area.
With Helinox, we’ve found that they are not ideal in sandy conditions however they still work! If you don’t like the feel in the sand, you can either buy larger feet for the Sunset Chair or a ground sheet which also works to evenly distribute the weight. You can even purchase rocking feet for the Sunset Chair (talk about relaxation station!). With all of the available accessories definitely comes a price which is a small drawback for me. I will say, I think the Sunset Chair is absolutely worth $150 because I know first hand how many years this chair will handle the abuse I will throw at it. We’ve always used ours, no matter the environment, without any accessories.

Thanks for the vid, I'm thinking of going for the tactical sunset chair, even more durable. And i would use it for Backpacking/ hiking. I think the extra space and weight would be worth it.

I have a Sunset chair, almost 5 years, they honor their warranty even when i told them the kids broke it fooling around at a family gathering. They are easy to repair and just sent me the parts but were willing to send me a return label and they could fix it. I asked just for parts, she ask if i was sure and i said yes, 5 days later chair fixed and back on my motorcycle for the next trip.

Thanks man. What's the difference between foam and air vs foam. I don't want the bigger (plus foam) package when traveling, however, i'm not sure whether that's much more comfortable. Weird they provide no info on that.

Hi Tyson! Ricard here. Sweden. How is this chair to eat from? When you lean forward maybe over a Helinox Table One Large? Is it stable or will it flip over? Cheers!

It does tend to keep the weight centered but it can be hard to try and lean forward. The chair puts you in a naturally reclined position.

Im looking at the Chair One XL. But do You think these chairs would poke holes in a tent floor ,if the ground under the tent is soft or muddy ? Thanks in Advance..

They would not poke a hole but they would probably leave a large indentation in the fabric where they were sitting. Helinox makes larger feet for them or you can put tennis balls on the end.

I just tried out one that someone else in our house bought. It's much more difficult to set up than my Helinox Chair Zero. I came here looking to see how people set them up in case I was missing something, but no luck.

​@@johngorentz6409I never even had to read the instructions. Just take the frame and shake it, then make sure sure the poles are all the way in, put the back on 1st, then the front seat post.

Well they are two totally different chairs/designs so... both? Depending on what style you like. The helinox is more of a relaxed seat and the FR is one that is more upright. The Helinox folds up pretty small, the FR doesn't and is heavier (made with thicker tubing).
