Used to just think these were ugly. Then started to become interested because they were cheap, designed by an aeronautical engineer, amazing stol, no fabric etc. Now after reading about Chris Heintz’s design philosophy they have started to look better and better. This is probably the nicest I’ve seen. Kudos!

I've basically made my choice on the 750 as the airplane I'm going to build. The biggest draw for me I'd that they're an all-aluminum airframe, so a lot more durable than something like a kitfox. Biggest thing for me is that it needs to survive being parked outdoors, as I'm planning on building a small strip to fly from with a bit of time between using it and building an eventual steel building.
@sledawgpilot
@sledawgpilot 5 жыл бұрын
The Kitfox has become expensive and it’s built kinda cheesy. Plywood ribs on aluminum tubes etc. I’m a taildragger pilot but I can see the advantages of the trike gear. He needs to go to Oshkosh next year and kick some stol demo butt!

@sledawgpilot - I agree. Most of these, I should say, all the ones I have seen personally are just butt ugly! Amazing what the right color and attention to detail does. Of course, in real life it may be much different looking.

Oh my gosh, just when I was getting really into the build details you hit me with that first flight with his daughter. She is so cute. As a father of two daughters some of the things she said just about made me emotional watching it (I've gotten awfully soft since being made a dad). She's really something and you must be very proud. What a cool dad.

In 1995 when i was 17 I took my grandfather's crop duster(PZL M-18 Dromader) for a spin with literally less then an hour of flight training on a Cessna 152 and it was all to show off in front of a girl I had a crush on. My grandfather was gone for the weekend and I decided to take the plane up for a cruise around the farm and it was same thing like John I took off no problem but I was to scared to land I didn't even know the stall speed of the aircraft, but finally after over an hour I landed and it was actually a smooth landing. When my grandfather returned he instantly recognized that I moved the plane and his neighbor told him that someone was flying the plane on Saturday, so I admitted to taking the plane. I thought he was gonna kill me but he was extremely calm and started explaining to me how lucky I am to be alive and how glad he was I didn't kill myself. But it was all worth it because in the end I got the girl, she is my wife now and when my grandfather passed away in 2006 I got the farm and the plane.

Superb - reminds me of operating out of my 300' field with 6' high gorse hedges each end. Plane was an X'air Hawk with 80hp Jabiru and 2 blade UK made wood prop. Never took passengers, picked/dropped them off from proper airfield ,but landings were a blast! Had to be careful on 27 because public road other side of hedge and had to pass inches over top of that hedge to get her in! Only one go-around in 3 years but that was due to roller off hill just to SW of field.

I see he has the extended leading slats on the wings. They provide greater lift for STOL but at the expense of greater drag/poor efficiency. I have proposed before to a builder (of a 750) to build them so they retract up against the leading edge of the wing, thus reducing drag/increasing efficiency once you are in the air. Simply put a few linear actuators in the wing, with box aluminum tubing guiding the wing slats fore and aft. Linear actuators can be built cheaply from cordless drills or cordless screwdrivers, and leadscrew.
@Rickenbacker69
@Rickenbacker69 4 жыл бұрын
Or just springs. The Rallye uses leading edge slats that are spring loaded to help with low speed performance, but retract automatically at higher speeds. Might be a little too complicated for a tiny homebuilt, though.

@danieldrinkwalter2393
@danieldrinkwalter2393 5 жыл бұрын
Guessing you mean the way the wings taper where they meet the fuselage; it's intentional to provide good visibility through the sky lite in a banked turn. Zenith's site has good info on the design features on the 701. It's interesting that several things that make the plane look 'Odd' (or some might say ugly) are on purpose and help the plane perform it mission (kick-ass STOL plane) in superior fashion.

I hope it didn't take away from the video content itself and more importantly highlighting Jon's awesome work of building his own aircraft.
