Just a clarification of history - Walsh/Montana/Rice only won 1 Super Bowl together. Rice hadn't been drafted yet when they won in '81 and '84 and in '89 Seifert took over coaching duties.

I'm sorry, but with Kirk Cousins in that game the 49ers would lose. The Lions would have 2 more sacks because he can't leave the pocket, and with the 49ers O line issues he'd have been shaky all night. Purdy needs to get back to form, but he's only going to get better and he CLEARLY has the guts to get it done.

The problem with Kirk is you have to figure out how to pay him and the upgrades to the interior line that you'd need to keep him from getting killed. That's a lot of work to get a guy at the end of his career that is a modest upgrade (at best) over what you already have.

Being up by 17 you can trade a touchdown for a field 4 times and still have the lead.... Lions should've been kicking field goals. You're up big, you have to just put up points any which way you can at that point. The players didn't execute some easy game clinching plays in crunch time. But Dan could've made it less stressful on them if he just kicked field goals and took what was being given to him.

True going for it on 4th down did not cause all the bad things that happened later. However, when you are up big, you should play conservative precisely because all the potential bad things that could happen. Let me explain. When you are tied, your appetite for risk is neutral. When you are down big, your appetite for risk goes way up, because if things proceed normally you're going to lose, so you must take chances. When you are up big, you can only lose if a string of bad events occur. Therefore your decision making must now shift to preventing that from happening. So, your risk taking should go way down.

I didn't mind the first time Campbell went for it, but the second was a clear mistake. I couldn't believe he was going for it rather than attempting a tying field goal. You do two things that were critical at that point in the game. 1) you tie the game and avoid going down two scores on the ensuing 49er possession. 2) you stop the bleeding and retake some of the momentum. Failure wouldn't cost you anything more. Coaches have to be in tune with 'the moment,' the vibe of their team in the moment and the next three moves beyond that point based on success or failure. I don't think he separated himself from what he'd done all year, took that 'moment' assessment from a hilltop general surveying the battle ground type-view because the vibe to me through the tv was 'let's tie this game, stop the bleeding and reengage with the hopes of a stop or holding them to a field goal.' I like Campbell, but I also hope he is as smart and self-reflective enough to realize he did not make the correct Big Picture move at that stage in the game. Even if he converted, I would've felt like he avoided a mistake rather than achieved a strategic victory.

With the Ravens - the Chiefs slowed down their run game, and their team fell apart. Lamar is a good passer; however, when the run element was limited, it hurt their offense. Then, when you add the undisciplined penalties, it was a recipe for disaster. With the Lions - that game was just heart breaking. I understand being aggressive on 4th down … but going up by three scores in a conference championship is huge. That failed 4th down conversion was the beginning of the end.

5:52 Interesting fact the original "alley-oop" happened in 1957 between the Lions and 49ers in the regular season. Y.A. Tittle threw a last second TD pass to R.C Owens which is known in football lore as the "alley-oop"

On the Patrick Mahomes discussion for greatest start to a career, Bart Starr had won two titles by the time he was 28 and won three more at ages 31-33. He went 9-1 in the playoffs too. He only had one league MVP.

The trouble with that comparison is that NFL titles from prior to the merger are not on the same level as Super Bowl championships, they are basically the same as conference championships, of which Mahomes has 4. Starr did _also_ win Super Bowls in two of those later seasons featuring his NFL championships, of course.

Ravens definitely reached their ceiling with Lamar, that’s the second blown 1 seed already in his career and the AFC was hella injured but Lamar still choked it away. This is why running QBs don’t win super bowls. Every defense knows to beat Lamar you have to take away their run game and force Lamar to be a pocket passer and he’ll always choke. He can’t read defenses and isn’t capable of threading the needle making downfield passes with accuracy. He has a good oline, he just scrambles around when there’s pressure until one of his receivers are wide open, but if he’s standing in the pocket and holds the ball long, he’ll throw a pick in triple coverage. The ravens didn’t make Lamar one of the highest paid QBs to perform like that in the postseason, unfortunately ravens fans will never see a Lamar Jackson Super Bowl, Joe Flacco is still their best QB all time

If someone would have told me halfway through the season that Dan Campbells coaching would cost them a trip to the Super Bowl, I would not have thought that was an overreaction. Any other coach does that, they get grilled. Campbell getting cute cost them. Period. Call it what it is, horrible coaching.

I agree, mainly because of the situation those decisions occurred in. When you are up big, your decision making should change. Going for it on 4th down, by itself is not bad, it depends on the situation. Clearly when you are down by a lot you need to start taking more chances. It follow then, that when you are up a lot, you should take less chances.

Everybody likes to criticize Purdy for not having a strong arm and just in general being a “system” quarterback. Yet not one analyst anywhere on TV or Social Media wants to admit that just one year ago he was in the NFC Championship game as a rookie and had an elbow injury that in baseball shuts down pitchers for 16-18 months!!! He elected NOT to have Tommy John surgery and instead went with a newer procedure not totally sure of what the healing process would look like or how his arm would respond. The fact that he led his team back and WON that game to get them into the Super Bowl is an unbelievable feat. His arm WILL get stronger over time and his continued growth and success will happen organically. Bottom line: HE CAN ONLY GET BETTER!!!

Brock Purdy could have a meltdown in the Superbowl and Kyle Shanahan wouldn't look to replace him. And rightfully so. Kyle LOVES Brock. Kyle never loved Jimmy. We as spectators don't even know half of what actually goes on in practices and games, but even when the 49ers were winning a lot of games, Kyle was always very... reserved with his praise of Jimmy G. To say coach Campbell going for it instead of field goals cost them the chance at a Super Bowl completely misses the fact that its because of how often the Lions would convert those key 4th downs that they were in this spot to begin with. Coach Campbell stayed true to how he calls games with aggression and given how quickly in his tenure this team has turned around I feel pointing to his aggression as their reason for failing is reductionist at best.
