The transformation itself was terrifying in the Manga. No screaming, no charging. You get the iconic bolt through the head indicating the trauma affecting him, he gives Frieza a death stare, and as lightning strikes behind him he's transformed in the blink of an eye without breaking eye contact with his enemy. It's like a literal explosion of power. It just *happens*.

I agree with you. I think both speeches are impressive in their own ways, but Kai really captures who Goku is and the emotion better. ❤ Although I won't lie. I think Dragon Ball Z Burst Limit has the best I am speech for Goku. 💖 Not only does he describes who he is, a Saiyan raised on Earth, but he doesn't claim to be the warrior heard in legends. Rather he states that he has that legendary warrior INSIDE OF HIM and he had been awakened WITHIN him. I actually find that more powerful. ✨💕✨

It actually sounds out of character, because he's quoting things to frieza that he's never heard of. The legend of the Super Saiyan? Whose pure heart is awakened by fury? Goku overheard Vegeta saying something about this legend for the first time earlier that day, and there was nothing about needing a pure heart or fury. All of that dialogue sounds like generic fairy tale stuff, which isn't who goku (Kakarot in this scene) is. Frieza was absolutely murdering everyone on Namek, including Goku's allies and close friends. The speech in Z was WAY more fitting for Goku to say because it was directly targeting how everything that he is and fights for is to stop evil like frieza who delights in murder and selfishness. Tell me you didn't watch Z without telling me you didn't watch Z.

He just also happens to not be able to stand for innocent people to get hurt, but that's not why he fights. If Goku was didn't care unless it was himself, his own friends or family being targeted, he'd still be the exact same character, just less moral. He wouldn't be fighting to stop evil, he'd just take the challenge to further his own power.

Early Funimation wanted Goku to be Superman, a Big Good who was incorruptable against the ultimate Big Bad (to that point) Frieza. Kai kept Goku's original motivation that Goku values a good fight above all else, and the best way to defeat a Big Bad is to humiliate him so badly that he loses all will to fight.

I don't get people who genuinely think Z dub have a better speech, and not just opinion wise, but objectively. Kai is literally TORIYAMA'S point of view, all his rejection of his origins, trying to understand the reason he get excited while fighting, Vegeta's death and his Saiyan pride, all of this, it all comes down to this speech he gave in Kai. Z otherwise, is just making him act for someone he is not, all this character development was not supposed to come to this heroic cheesy ass speech, it was about him fully accepting who he is, the Super Saiyan Son Goku who came all the way from Earth to beat Freeza.
