I still haven't found satisfying answers to some details in the film: --> why did Epona pour salt into her water before drinking? --> why was there salt around the bathroom sink, or later on leaves around the sink, or various dishes around the back entrance of the AirBnb cottage? --> who was Epona talking about when Sam saved her from hanging and she said "Don't call the police, he will kill me?" --> why did the island look familiar to Sam when he first got there? --> were the hallucinations that he had on his first night there just drunken psychotic visions, or was he remembering things? --> what was the deal with Jess and her husband who apparently knew the people on that island, and how did her daughters end up being island prisoners, since they were supposed to be in their father's custody? There's probably other questions too that I can't think of right now, but yeah, I'm a bit upset right now. I need more of this to make sense, or to come full circle.

What I saw is how well made the show was and how they blend the melancholia of the location with the mental melancholy of Sam (that he passed to her daughter too as we heard she had issues back at school ) with grief that again her wife blames on his flings that caused it. All this comes together with this deserted island a perfect location for crazy superstitions rusting through people and blame their misfortune and try to solve it with rusty religious rituals. The fact that once they relied on tourism for the beauty of the tradition but due to changes of time they are forgotten and poor add to the insanity . Now Sam a mental grieving man is like the best prey for a small cult worshiping community in the middle of that stunning nowhere! What I loved about the show was this great melange of mental illness, poverty and superstition and how sometimes they are come together in strange locations and trap some people. And how you might be the woman in love with someone that you wanted to ignore his madness but at the end you have to leave him in his island and escape for what you have left.

I still can’t show enough appreciation for the amazing cinematography and sound editing and music. Genius . The script is very good maybe a little loosen on the finale so for me it’s a 9/10. I would argue that something supernatural was going on because Sam saw a painting of himself in the church (might have been stained glass) where he has knives and is all bloody. He then fulfilled this when he stabbed up Jason. Also those swarms of crickets didn't seem natural at all.
@sabrinafairchild10582 жыл бұрын
I know. What was that???
@lagtvfan21285 ай бұрын
We can't trust Sam's POV. This could have been his imagination and then fulfilling his own prophecy. As to the crickets, they were shown to be hitting the camera. So I suppose that we have to trust that this was part of the immersive tv experience the authors wanted to create, almost crossing the fourth wall, but not quite. I don't know if that makes them more likely or less likely to be real or supernatural.
@nunnaurbiznez88152 ай бұрын
I'm sorry but that second but literally makes no sense. I can assure you that a man with no children wrote that concept because no actual mom of two young girls would be dragging her children on a search for that deadbeat. Then keeping the search up in weirdo land? Please... No wonder there was no further story. It was stupid.
@8pool4494 жыл бұрын
There are layers within layers for me here. Summer was a view of the island from the believers’ perspective, Autumn showed us more detail of what their beliefs entail. Winter was the view of the non- believers, who see nothing but cult, madness and delusion. It certainly doesn’t resolve on which is right- believer or non-believer. One important aspect is that the founder turned out to be Jack the Ripper and this is the darkness they keep referring to. There are many elements of pagan religions here- Mother vs Father, parents vs children, light vs dark, madness, sacrifice, redemption. All of which effectively need to be held in balance. My guess would be that Jess is actually Sam’s sister- it’s the only bit of the old stories that’s not present here. We have never received an explanation around why her husband was controlling her- we know that was true from the phone call she had in Autumn and her daughters hold a high position on the island (they were basically sitting on thrones in the marquee)- they have got to be of the blood & my guess is it’s through Jess (it could be her husband though, sometimes sister-in-law is no different to sister in these stories). We end here with Jess ruling as the false queen and most likely her child destined to kill her Father. The fact that Helen dragged the boat (which was one of their pagan stations of the cross) and effectively also undertook the trials would make her the real Mother. She should dethrone Jess, but wants no part of it, the other one who could do that is Ellie of course. It will be interesting to see if they revisit this. I loved the duality of it all and I genuinely found it to be compelling- I watched the whole of Autumn live, sitting in my pyjamas (someone really should have taught Jude Law how to use a shovel though, the poor bugger must have been in agony). It owes more than a nod to David Lynch of course, but I love his stuff too!

About 6 years ago I spent one night only, on Osea Island, on the River Blackwater, in Essex, England....☠️ It was a very weird experience. Many movies and films have been filmed on the island, and it also has a recording studio. It is a private island owned by the hairdresser John Freida's brother, and is accessed only by a long causeway, built by the Romans, which is underwater for most of the tide, only revealing itself twice daily at lowest tide. At one time, it was a "detox" retreat for the rich and famous. Once you are on the island, and the tide comes in, you're stuck there until the next low tide. My ex girlfriend had booked a 3-night stay on the island as a birthday treat, because the islands of Essex have always fascinated me, and I've made it a bit of a "mission" to try and get on as many of them as I can. But...it was REALLY expensive. As much as a week's stay in a nice hotel in Spain or Greece. But anyhoo... The drive over the causeway was a little unsettling. It seemed to go on forever, and to be stuck out there in a sea of mud, knowing that the tide can come over you at any minute is a bit un-nerving. When we finally got there, the whole organization of the place seemed very half-arsed and scruffy. I got the impression that it was just a sort of rich boys "playground" for wealthy scruffbags from West London called "Will"...and..."Hugo". You know the types. Theres quite a few buildings on the island, and the first one they offered us was a dump. So we moaned, and they moved us into a larger, detached, house, all by ourselves. But it was still dirty and very scruffy. We spent the day walking around the edge of the island, but didn't really sleep that well that night. Something felt very "off" about the place. My ex was a bit of a witchypoo type, and she said that she got a very un-nerving feeling about the island. Like something terrible had happened on there in the past, and might still be going on? It really had that "Wicca Man" feeling about the place. Also...you feel very isolated out there, with no way off. So the next day...we left. Quickly. 👻 Weirdly also, on our walk around the edge of the island we sighted what was something like a BIG CAT. Black ..as big as a large dog, and running through the undergrowth on the wild extreme western side of the island. 🥴

Why does Sam call Helen "Cass" several times? Is this just an unexplained other name she goes by or is there something more to it? Since it was so pronounced and repeated, I'm a little surprised it was never explained or even hinted at.

Yeah- I spotted that too, plus at the end, she was hugging her son’s T shirt at first, then it was the bag of money. This series does keep you guessing on what’s real!

@@8pool449 I think the bag being the son's shirt was just her delirium/exhaustion/wish fulfillment, but they never clarify the name. UNLESS they talked about it in that 12-hour livestream.

@@EgbertWilliams No, I watched the livestream for the whole 12 hours & they never did. I don’t think it was delirium though, they seemed to blur reality a lot, people’s faces changed throughout the acid trip scene in Episode 2, I don’t think you’re really meant to know what’s real and what isn’t. I think during Summer we were meant to be believers and we’re meant to be sceptics for Winter. It’s some really clever storytelling, keeps you guessing the whole time. I like this series but there are lots of holes. It was a big project and I think they bit off a bit more than they could chew for such a short series. The entire series is based off of or from the POV of his “episodic psychosis” and the brainwashing that goes on on the island but there was only one scene that actually solidified this near the end of the finale. Ellies full submission to Jess and the island was not earned. She had shown serious reluctance when Jess’s creepy daughter asked her if she wanted to see that secret temple. I don’t buy that they could’ve convinced her that her mother was “made of stone“ in that short of time. The biggest thing that didn’t make sense: no way in hell would Helen have survived that swim.

Thanks for the good summary, I didn't quite finish the first episode, I thought it was a bit heavy with cliche and felt like it might've been written on someone's lunch break. It felt pretty obvious from the get-go that the lady at the Inn was there to seduce Sam, even from his 'accidentally' being sent into her room while she slept etc. I also guessed he'd end up a believer in the cult. I don't think it added much of interest to the genre - although fully respect those who enjoyed it. Just didn't personally hold my attention.

The ominous vibes surrounding Jesse's daughter never really wrapped up. We don't get any resolution with the power struggle between Jess and Sam. Just was gonna hurt the little girls and then Nothing came of it. EllieSeemed like she was called to the island that that would be And issue when it came time to leave but nope, she hopped right in the boat. The boys shirt in the bag of money Thing was weird as well - what were they trying to communicate there? And why didn't Nathan age appropriately? And Y Como when He told his mom he knew she didn't mean it when she said she wish she was never born, did she just turn and leave? Also What the hell was happening in the woods? What happened at the burned down trailer? And why was Emily Watson's exposition about what happened to Nathan inconsistent - is it Nathan or not??

Apparently it was added later and isn't in the original texts? Anyhow, Luke 23:17 reads: "It was necessary for him to release (give) one to them at the feast (Passover)." This is after Jesus is arrested and Pontius Pilate asks who to release; Jesus of Nazareth or Jesus Barabas. The crowd chooses to exchange the 2 and free the criminal Barabas. Also, at the 1st Passover, all the Egyptians lost their 1st born sons.... also a bit of a reach........ I then did a search and found a site that had all verses that mentioned 1st born sons. Nothing with the relevant numbers

What was even the point of the first season if they were going to abandon the story's idea in the first place. The mother's character was atrocious. I kept wanting her to die. She was a mess and only showed up for the money. She was a terrible example to their girls. Lie, lie, lie! Every important word in the narrative, the narrator mumbled in this video causing me to have to rewind a bazillion times. Not the accent, But please pay more attention to narration when conveying major plot points (ex: so and so’s relatives must mumble mumble mumble on the island for the outside world to be ok. They have to what? Live? Be sacrificed? Grow tomatoes?

I very much enjoyed this show for what it is but much like The Wickerman, The Third day contains a lot of anti-pagan bigotry. It makes for an entertaining shocker, but it unfairly paints pagans in a bad light. It's a shame this attitude still exists in 2020.

To be fair, Pagan's that "Sacrifice" people are bad. That should be shown in a bad light. But you could also argue Christianity is a Religion based on Human Sacrifice (It was just one guy, but still a sacrifice). People just don't like the hear that.

@@TangoNevada It depends on what you mean by pagans and what is meant by sacrifice. There is little evidence that northern europeans were sacrificing humans, most accusations come from the Romans who were all about demonizing the other by use of propaganda and lies. This continued after Rome converted to xtianity and the demonisation of pagans stepped up a few gears leading to the mass slaughter of pagans throughout europe for centuries, the massacre of Verden etc. This ultimatley lead to the witch burnings. Again, there is little evidence that northern europeans ever made sacrifice of humans. It seems to be xtian inspired propaganda of the other. Bigotry, no less.

@@AlMondO93 Nah, it's actually extremely simple. All I said was Pagan's that Sacrifice People are bad. I can't see how that's controversial. I think in context it is extremely clear what I meant by Human Sacrifice. So no confusion there. I'm not accusing anyone of anything. I'm sure there are plenty of Pagan's that don't do or never did that and I have no problem with them all. In fact I am probably more inline with their belief's than anyone else's.
