I've noticed even on EA that my Tesla is the fastest handshaking car I've seen. Really shows how much of the handshake time is on the car side. Re: just charging authorization: Plug&Charge is basically just "car tells you where to go for payment authorization". There's a crypto key exchange to protect what is at the heart "Please bill $MANUFACTURER, on account id $CAR". So the charger network/operator still has[1] to go off to ford and ask ford if that payment is authorized, and then Ford has[2] to go and ask your credit card company... EVgo pre-billed your credit card, so they already have some of your money... they can skip that step. EVgo is doing the billing, so they can skip that step. All they have to do is a DB lookup for "is that car registered?" and there are techniques for doing that reasonably accurately offline if needed. [1] Ford _could_ give EVgo a list of vehicles that are active, and trust EVgo to bill them appropriately. But that would require trust and like people to care about the UX to that degree, and other unlikely things. [2] Ford could have pre-charged your card like EA/EVgo/etc, and frankly I expect the relevant manufacturers to start doing that, as an extra small income source.
@KeeperOfTheSevenKeys.2 жыл бұрын
@@kilpatds Yeah my understanding with autocharge is that it's considered to be less secure because it's vulnerable to being spoofed, since it skips the whole payment encryption process as long as the information it's fed matches a registered vehicle. I don't know how serious of a problem that would actually be though. But that's why it was instant while the ISO standard takes a good bit of time to process.

I've used Autocharge a couple of times now on my Bolt EUV. It generally works well, and the enrollment process for GM owners is even easier than what you demonstrated (don't have to manually initiate a charge the very first time). My only complaint is the authentication process seems to take a bit longer than I might like, with about 45-60 seconds between plugging in and power actually being delivered. Still, this is a fantastic system and I now seek out EVgo over EA stations - particularly the EVgo Ultium ready ones.

I've got all of my EVs enrolled in autocharge -- Cooper SE, Bolt, and XC40 all works. Very impressive. Like others have said, I similarly start to prefer EVGo as well. Few issues I had with enrollment. 1) it doesn't work with a different driver assigned to each vehicle in the account, 2) the phone and tech support don't seem too knowledgeable about this. The first guy I talked to claimed that the Cooper SE does not work with this system (even though I have already gotten it to work). I was the one who kept playing around with the app to figure out the "bug" in the software/system.

That's phenomenal. The fact that Autocharge+ works with any vehicle with bidirectional CCS (which is the vast majority of even older models) is a huge win for EVgo. I really hope EA and other vendors adopt this strategy. It should work with L2 stations, even if the current implementation doesn't support it. I'm guessing the L2 station hardware doesn't have ANY vehicle communication ability beyond the current limit signaling, hence it's not supported, but it COULD be supported!
@sbrubak2 жыл бұрын
All CCS connectors are bidirectional. They could not work without it. Autocharge just links the cars MAC address to your CC. The MAC address is a basic feature of the communication protocol. As long as the MAC address stays constant over the cars lifetime autocharge will work. Some car makers (most notably VAG) will however randomize the MAC address for privacy reasons. (This way a charge operator can't track you by MAC address)

That is AWSOME, Kyle. Thanks so much. If you know how many cells in series, you can get a good idea of the voltage limitation because the BMS will not allow any cell to get over about 4.2 Volts. The Model 3 has 96 in series so 96 X 4.2 = 403.2 Volts. You may see a bit more at the charger (if that is what is displayed) due to voltage drop at the high current levels. The Plaid Model S may have a higher voltage pack to facilitate the high motor RPM required for it's top speed.

I don't think Autocharge requires the manufacturer to cooperate. They just need the manufacturer to not go out of their way and break it... When creating the local network (be it the CCS connection or Ethernet or Wifi or any new thing based off of those systems), each network endpoint needs to have a MAC address. Traditionally those were hard coded on device creation, typically these days they're in ROM on the device but changable via software. Autocharge just uses that (constant) MAC as a "car id", and uses it to look up the payment info. When cell phones using wifi became common, someone raised a privacy issue: if the device has a constant MAC (and it does), you can track that device moving from wifi network to wifi network by the MAC, or recognize it when it returns. So cell-phone manufacturers started changing the mac, and either creating a new mac for each wifi network, or changing it periodically. So ... VW-group decided to apply that to the analogous situation on CCS: randomize the MAC on plugin. No one else bothered. Autocharge works for everyone else except VW Group. If a manufacturer decides to add the privacy protection that VW Group did, it will break autocharge. EVgo's "Autocharge+" is adding the plus to make it more trademarkable, and is also likely doing some testing/log scrapping to verify that the MAC seems to be constant for each car.

If the time, location, and State of Charge (SoC) are impossible or improbable, the session will be stopped, and customers will receive a notification of potential fraud, requiring their confirmation to allow Autocharge+ (i.e., if your account is used to start a charge in California and then to start a charge in Ohio ten minutes later, this will be flagged as potential fraud)."

I really hope EVGo expands their operation in Oregon (and the rest of the country). California is littered with EVgo stations. Washington has a bunch, especially around Seattle. Oregon has like 2 or 3 stations for the entire state, and they’re all decrepit 50kw chargers and they’re only in Portland. There really, really needs to be another charging provider in Oregon that does more than 62kw to compete with EA, since EA has been so disappointing recently. Also, just to clarify a statement you made, there is a current limitation to the Tesla connector, they may just not specify it. The connector will only support a certain maximum size of conductor, so that will limit the current. The fact that the connectors fry when charging a Tesla at max speed means it’s already at or near the limit.

7:11 The EVgo high power chargers all take a fairly long time to activate. I spoke to EVgo about it, and it's a known issue. Without getting into too much detail, it appears to be due to the size of power modules those chargers use.

@newscoulomb37052 жыл бұрын
@@greengrass89 Yes, the 100 kW Delta DC City chargers are probably using the identical power modules as the 350 kW Delta charger, so the boot up time would be about the same. EVgo's 50 kW units, however, activate in about the same time as a Supercharger. Maybe a few seconds slower, but nothing like the higher power units. So these activation times appear to be completely controlled by the size and integration of the DC charging modules. Tesla originally used their onboard AC chargers strung in series, which resulted in similar start up times to AC charging. ChargePoint's CPE 250 units use smaller 32 kW modules (78 A) that activate in about 10 to 15 seconds. These Delta units appear to use 50 kW modules (100 A), that take significantly longer to boot up.

10:16 The amperage for CCS is dictated by the cables and sockets, not the standard, so CCS is theoretically capable of much more power than NACS. The biggest difference is that CCS component makers and public charging providers strictly adhere to IEC and UL safety guidelines, while Tesla does not, so even if a charging provider like EVgo integrated NACS, power would likely be less than what Tesla would be willing to feed over the same size cable.
@gwieser2 жыл бұрын
Exactly, many misunderstand the concept of CCS. It just defines the minimums that the connector, charger and vehicle have to support, not the maximum. There is nothing speaking against 1000A of CCS if someone solves the necessary cooling on cables and connectors. Tesla goes over the typical amperage limits because they know the charging curves of their cars. It's just a tiny peak and then goes below the usual 500A, so no issues with cooling. They wouldn't be able to deliver 270kW for half an hour.
@chidorirasenganz2 жыл бұрын
Considering that the NACS goes up to 1 MW and most cars don’t even maintain 150kw throughout a charging session, I don’t think it matters that theoretically CCS could be faster.
@chidorirasenganz2 жыл бұрын
@@gwieser Any sources on that otherwise that’s just conjecture
@newscoulomb37052 жыл бұрын
@@chidorirasenganz Well, no, it doesn't matter which standard is faster, which is why the NACS claim of 1MW is so absurd. What matters is how much current can safely and sustainably be transferred. Tesla's lack of larger, discrete DC pins means that, using the same safety standards, NACS will always be lower power than CCS. Likewise, NACS will never be faster than CCS if the same safety standards and temperature controls are applied to the cable. Now, it's true that *most* current EVs are not capable of maintaining 150 kW through a charging session, some absolutely are. The Audi e-tron will pull 150+ kW from 0% to 85%. The GMC HUMMER EV will pull >300 kW from 0% to 50%, which means the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EVs will do the same. The Rivian R1S/R1T will pull 500 A up to about 50% battery (about 30 minutes). And, of course, these charging rates are currently limited by battery capabilities. Upcoming solid-state and lithium-metal batteries will not only be higher energy, they also appear to have significantly higher C rates. Currently, the highest C rate used in EVs is ~3 C, so an EV with a 100 kWh pack will never draw more than about 300 kW peak. If these newer batteries have 20% more energy and a 5 C rate (both conservative numbers), that same EV would have a 120 kWh pack that could draw 600 kW. At that point, the ability to sustain significant current over time would matter a lot more than it does now.

@@chidorirasenganz NACS does not "go up to 1MW" - There is *explicitly* no power rating in the NACS Technical Specification. None. The only thing the standard says is that the connector is either 500V or 1000V rated, and the current should be limited by connector temperature. That's it. The power rating is "as much as you can get away with without overheating," not "1MW." However, the provided data sheet for the DC connector - which is a separate document also provided as part of their proposed standard - lists the max operating voltage as 500VDC, a rated current of 200A, and max instantaneous current as 400A. *Read in full, the NACS standard as currently proposed is 100KW with a 200KW peak.* Even if we're charitable and say the connector is upgraded to 1KV, that's 200KW/400KW peak. The only source that comes close to the 1MW claim is a footnote in the NACS Technical Specification, which claims they "operated ... at 900A continuously with a non-liquid cooled vehicle inlet." (Which would be 900KW not 1000KW) The most we can infer from this is that under controlled conditions they claim to have managed at least 901 amps for some undefined period of time. But because their electrical performance spec is still 500V/200A, the standard as a whole is still 100KW regardless of their claims or testing. To officially make it any higher they will have to provide new performance specs for the DC connector. No engineer who values their license will look at a datasheet that says "Rated Current 200A DC" and think "Ah well they claim to have run nearly five times that through it with no problems so I guess I can ignore that!"

That is awesome..shall have to try this on my Ioniq 5. evGo claims to support it. Any idea if EA has anything similar? I use them mostly, due to the EA free charging deal

I was wondering how long it would take for you to do this video. I wish I had more EvGo options in my area as this seems very nice.

At 540 amps, did your CCS adapter get warm? I’m located on the west coast of Florida and I wish we had some EVgo stations.

I believe fastned use this method too. It's good for cars that don't have payments in their own app

Fastned was the company that created Autocharge. They asked ABB to make it for them.

Great video Kyle. Can you put a link to exact adapter you use please? I’m sure it’s obvious to to most others but I haven’t used non-superchargers before. Thanks so much for all the great info!

The adapter is just the Tesla official CCS1 adapter, which is available on Tesla’s website or in the Tesla app. There are 3rd party adapters available too, Lectron comes to mind, but use them at your own risk.

I was super excited about EVGo after watching this, so I signed up, then I found out they charge per minute in Florida so now I'm less excited. They should be charging per kwh.
@BensEcoAdvntr2 жыл бұрын
They are moving to per kWh in all states that allow it. Some ban selling by the kW because they classify anybody who does as a "utility" and regulate them as such. Still, in real world terms the per minute rates are often cheaper than per kWh even for slower charging cars like the Bolt provided you're in the 0-80% range.

@@BensEcoAdvntr Glad to hear they are moving to per-kwh where they can! Sounds like EVGo has a chance to surpass EA if they keep positive changes up.

I know your adapter is locked to the car but what keeps the Evgo plug from being unplugged by someone? I’ve been at a charger where someone tried to do that (with my CCS to Tesla adapter but I had the locking ring). (By the way, they were desperate, I talked to them about it later).

Actually thinking more about it; It is *hypothetically* possible to spoof a MAC address and charge your car at someone else's expense. ISO15118 uses cryptographic certificates to prevent this, or at least make it significantly more difficult. Whether or not this extra level of security is even necessary is debatable given the amount of effort and risk it would take to pull off this scam versus the benefit of saving what, $30?
@theflew Жыл бұрын
Agreed. You would have already had to breach their system to get a MAC address that had an enabled account before you could spoof anything. And given the user gets notification this would only work once.
