I also think it would be interesting to discuss Murakami's side effect in particular because it's not so much perception as it is processing, so he doesn't get extra information like anyone else's side effect gives them, he's just able to retain and use information to a higher degree

Side Effects are quite a unique feature of this series, and how they play a part in character development and slot in nicely with the power system. For all the advantages the side effects give, it just shows that training and experience are still a requirement for reaching the top. With the number of people with side effects in border, we know very little about how long these characters have has these abilities, or how they first manifested. There are only 5 or so characters who have a known history with their side effect (Spoilers): - Kikuchihara (Enhanced Hearing) - Manifested at such a young age he didn't identify it until joining border - Kuga (Lie Detection) - Aquired through Yuugo's Black Trigger - Chika (Neighbour Detection and Hiding Her Presence) - Used for years to lure Trion Soldiers into the Forbidden Zone, while not being caught herself. Unknown to Border - Jin (Can view the futures of people he sees) - Probably had his side effect before the combat to claim Fujin, and for long enough before this to rival Tachikawa - Ko (Enhanced Sleep Learning) - Caused him problems in shool-level sports, he learned much faster than his peers. Apart from them, there is little in the way of backstories for any other agents. - Kageura (Detects Emotions directed towards him) - Punched Netsuki after being aggrivated via his side effect - Amo (Sees Combat Strength as Colour) - Unknown - Yotaro (Can Speak to Animals) - Unknown. Border is unaware of this side effect as the only animal Yotaro tends to talk to is Raijinmaru, who isn't very cooperative. - Yomi of Galopoula (Perfect Parallel Processing) - Unknown - Ikoma (Unofficial: Knows where a camera would be pointing at him from, can just about break the 4th wall) - Unofficial

Wait. He can talk to animals?! How did I miss that?! Also, didn't know or recall side effects were actually tiered. That's actually interesting. It adds a bit of depth to the whole power and I do like side effects. They don't get used often and don't like super interfer with fights, unless it's Jen in which he dodges nearly everything. They are more like an extra layer of icing on an already delicious tactical combat cake this series has. I do wonder what is an upper limit for a side effect is. I doubt they get as crazy as some MHA quirks, but I am still curious how far an S rank side effect can go when we already have one that can see the future. Does that mean someone can have a side effect that senses or see people's souls? 🤔

It probably cant do anything mha level or mystical. It is more shaman like abilities to sense or see something at s rank. Also the animal thing was in the border briefing files.

I don't recall any character who got their side effect later in life through training or whatever. Yuma is the only outlier since he inherited his dad's side effect with his black trigger.

Well I believe it must be a traumatic experience and it isn't really explained but I think the border files slightly mentions it.

4:30 I’m guessing that Ammo side effect is an upgraded form of synesthesia. Where instead of hearing colors when you see them, he sees colors when he see someone strong.

Yeah that is Amos side effect. It is kind of said during the attack on the away mission ship. I just want to know about his trigger and personality because he is just a wierd mystery.

Amo can interpret power level as color. But not just strength, skill as well. The invader color changed when they faught side by side. I also wonder what their Black Trigger is. Such a mystery!

So I reread WT and there's like flashback or image shadowy monster when the top brass discussing about want to catch Kuga, so Amo's black trigger like shifting? Making him look like monster (chapter 33, I think)

Side Effects are very similar to haki, as in, people can be born with those or awaken them through some sort of catalyst. However, it differs quite a lot in the aspect of how it affects the story because instead of being a clear complete power up, it's been treated as more an esper kind of thing that doesn't completely break the anime. This also brings up the fact that Osamu will be dealing with these without his own, further solidifying his outght improvement through the series, which ends up improving the anime just as much (both of his friends have one, besides their already rare access to either a black trigger or Trion level reaching a small Sun).

Honestly, I wanna see a theory video based on Amo since he's one of the few characters in border who has been purposely kept out the most. Especially since he is the only one in the Border briefing files that has his section about his black trigger a secret and the fact that it hints his body actually changes when it's activated.

I don't know how that could have happened unless he was abandoned on earth and then got his memory wiped so that he didn't remember it happened. But also we haven't seen them interact yet so it's still possible.

But it is possible but I kind of hope not because the person who killed Yuma was fighting a war and I want to find out more about that when they explore the neighbourhood without Amo.

But I kind of think just because of how things are looking for Hyuse in the manga that they would encounter each other.

Mine would be superior reflexes or maybe something like catlike reflexes essentially my body just avoids danger ( kinda like ultra instinct but not to an extent that I move incredibly fast) but I’ll maneuver my body to perfectly dodge avoid block or parry attacks that would otherwise wound me i believe this would be a great side effect for a close range combatant like an attacker
