I have a M1 MBA and my wife has the Surface Laptop 4. They are both great laptops. If I needed Windows, I would be completely satisfied with the SL4 or SL5.

@@DowonLee-hb7mw The SL5 supports Thunderbolt 4 on the USB-C ports. That may be signficant if you don't use the Surface Connect dock.

@@DowonLee-hb7mw You can't go wrong with either. They are essentially the same laptop. One is a little less expensive and one is a little newer.

I think 12th gen Intel are only comparable to M1 and tailing M2 but not as quick as M3. You have to step up to Core 5 or 7 Ultra for that especially in power management.

I tried a Surface Go 3 and a Surface Pro 9 and was very very underwhelmed for photography work. Lightroom with my 2020 M1 Air was so so much more responsive and workable, with no fan noise or heat to boot. Hopefully a 14th gen refresh, Ryzen, or new Qualcomm chips can turn these devices around. I feel spoiled by Apples M series.

I had the original Surface Book (remember the one with the unusual hinge?) and the first Surface Pro. That was during my Windows days, and I thought the Surface line was the best competitor, quality-wise, to Apple laptops. I transitioned to the Apple ecosystem a few years ago but if I were to purchase another Windows laptop it would be a Surface.

The difference is that you are paying $1600 for a BASE Mac M3 w/8GB RAM. The BASE SL5 is $999 (currently $799), and the 16GB version is only $1499 (currently only $1099). So given the premium cost of a $1600 Macbook... 8GB in 2023/24 is laughable.

So you are changing the conversation about whether 8GB is enough to value for money? That is another story that has many variables, the obvious one is that if you want the Apple ecosystem and/or macOS, you can only buy Macs.@@kevlarian

Grats. We got Snapdragon Elite SL6 w/max 64gb of RAM for just under $2500 USD. Not the worst update. I’m trading in my Galaxy Book for one.

Subpar on the hardware side but MacOS task switching and file management is over 20 years old - alt-tab and it switched to a closed app (closing an app leaves a useless stub behind). File management - don't get started - its just such a time waste.. Simple things like viewing in a list and sorting by columns like last modified date aren't really a thing and Apple expects you to open 50 different windows and up arrow navigation in the top ribbon isn't a thing - reminds me of 80s mac mini - 1 milllion mouse clicks later - look i am getting some work done LOL

Ps. StageFright or whatever apple calls the improvement to task management does improve things but comes with its own set or irks (like having to actually click on the desktop to switch to it).. I sold my macbook - artists can have it - i need to get work done productivity-wise..

Yes, macos as an OS is a mess in the windows management side. They rely heavily on 3rd party apps to fill the gap that apple leaves behind.

Main thing i have about macOS. File management is terrible. So archaic. Windows makes it so easy to access folders and moves stuff around.

I am still of the opinion, specifically in the premium PC/laptop market, that if you do not game or need Windows-specific software, the M-chip Macs are the way to go. The Surface Laptop does not change my mind, and I feel that the device is targeting affiliated businesses of MS that have to show they are using MS stuff. I have had these, and they have been solid and reliable, but I always bought them secondhand at massive discounts (under 50%), so they become good value versus new Windows mid-rangers.

I refuse to buy Dual core Laptops. My work laptop is dual core and I hate it with a passion. To get anything done I need to turn up to 3/4 or Full performance. Then the battery drains in a matter of hours. Hate them, really hate Dual core. Stop making them Intel and stop using them Microsoft. Use ARM instead and force X86 antiquated out
