Yea having played Lords of the Fallen and Surge 1 I actually agree with Delrith's assessment, Lords of the Fallen wasn't the greatest game either but it was better designed than the first Surge. This one definitely added a ton of quality of life improvements, although made the game a bit too easy with how much health regen and defense you can get. (Bosses hit like wet noodles in new game+) Overall though, vast improvement on the first game. Main problem I had with the first game (and there were a lot of problems) was I didn't actually like any of the weapons and there was only 5 types to pick from. (It's like playing a Street Fighter game with only your 5 least favorite characters to pick from) This one added more types but most still feel as clunky as the ones in the first Surge, with one exception, the new Spear type weapon feels amazing with great reach, speed, damage and even has decent AoE. They could definitely add more weapon types into the mix and make better combos with them. For example, I like the idea of the Double Duty weapons, but they eat so much stamina you barely get one combo off before you're out of stamina. Just greatly reducing how much stamina that type of weapon eats would be a vast improvement.

The more reviews of The Surge 2 I see, the more convinced I become that none of these people actually played The Surge past Abandoned Production. The Surge 2 IS the Surge. There are plenty of changes, to be sure, but none of them are revolutionary. Both mechanically and visually, it's the same game. Yet here we are with Del praising The Surge 2's level design for its intricate shortcuts and hidden secrets... When The Surge had the exact same level design. Jericho City downtown has almost the same design as Creo World and most of the other zones play like Central Production B. The comment about animations in The Surge 2 being "better" is straight-up absurd. The vast majority of weapons simply reuse the same animations from The Surge with absolutely no changes. I've always had this sense that people never gave The Surge a fair shake and decided they were going to hate it before even playing it for some reason. Maybe we were too close to major Dark Souls releases, I don't know. But the feedback The Surge 2 is getting simply confirms what I suspected in the past. Now that reviewers are ACTUALLY playing the game for any length of time... Yeah, turns out it's not bad.
@Nomadic_Gaming5 жыл бұрын
110% agree its more of the same w some refinements but alot of stuff got reused that being said its good they didnt play w everything too much as so many didnt give the first game credit where it was due (and some criticism of it too) so they took an ok game made another slightly better game hopefully the surge 2 sells better so they can iterate on the formula a lil and nail a niche for another game or just a different game using what they did right and well w the surge cuz i love bloodborne witcher darksouls sekiro nioh but the surge had its feel that got a lil repetitive but felt fluid and had room for low skill/iq and high skill/iq play styles and success enough that it was its own mold vs games listed above and the sci-fi esthetics stood out really nice too ina medieval overloaded genre.

This is one of the games that is more of the same but improved-all major aspects such as exploration, combat or visual design are drawing from original game but are improved. Armor sets are almost identical to original as well but obviously new were added as well. Lastly, Deck13 fixed most common casez of crashing and stutter that plagued the game at release by thentime this video was publishec, beta branch fixed it by 27th of September in fact, so the review gives outdated info for PC at least.

How was the original game clunky? When it comes to weapon animations, it was the same thing. When it comes to dismemberment animations it was the same thing. when it comes to blocking, it was more or less, the same thing. When it comes to bosses, regardless of what the bosses were, killing them in a unique way lead to special weapons there as well. The only addition that sequel made was adding more weapon types, expanding the environment, charging weapon moves and directional block(parry). Oh yeah, and rather than adding drones as cake icing, they actually made it part of the slice. And this game is easier than the first Surge because you are not bound by a limited set of health injectibles anymore. The rest is exactly the same. While I am happy for the recognition this game is (finally) getting, I am also seeing the blatant disregard of the original game that isn't all that old and had the same mechanics.

I don’t really have much to add to the review besides I don’t believe this guy ever seriously played through the first Surge. I can understand him liking the animations/combat style more but he keeps referring to the first Surge as a clunky dumpster fire yet most of if not all of the points he praises The Surge 2 with can be applied to the original and I would recommend anyone who plays the second game to try out the original too. I about fell out of my chair laughing when he praised the level design in this game while simultaneously trashing the first when almost all of the areas in the original Surge interweave and form shortcuts and paths you unlock progressively reminiscent of the original Dark Souls that inspired it. He praises the limb system... which is literally copy pasted from the original to this one and I can even see in this very video the exact same animation that the heavy hammer uses and the axe uses to chop off arms and heads that were in the original and even the weapon models are the same. By all means listen to this guy’s criticism and if the first game wasn’t for him that’s fine but don’t do a disservice and take what he’s saying at face value because I’ve honestly never seen a more hypocritical review of a game in a while and I think it’s largely due to him either being ignorant of the first game, forgetting it, or never giving it a solid attempt in the first place and just giving up in the difficult starting areas. If you enjoy the second Surge you will enjoy the original because all the second does is build on all of the strong core mechanics and concepts that were already in the original. Whether you want to argue if it is way more improved or not is up to you, but to argue that this game has so much more going for it that it’s akin to this being an 8/10 and the other being a 0/10 is the height of ignorance and borderline stupidity.

I agree with you. But at the sametime i think you might have put to much passion towards one person's opinion. Let's just be happy he actually gave the second game a fair shot. It's good it's getting love here because sadly it's loosing the war against Code vein. Which imo is trash over all. With just a few good things going for it. If you and i are on the same boat i think we both can agree we want surge 2 to succeed. It breaks my heart to see it getting slept on becouse anime tiddies. Especially considering surge 2 is better then the first game in about every single way i can think of. And is a amazing and refreshing take on the souls like genre.

I played Surge 1 and 2 and I really liked 1st. I mean I finished it like four times. Second is maybe better but you can't say: "In 1st animations were baaaadd and in 2 are sooo good". Attacking and finishing blows are having same animations in both games, exept two new weapons type. Most of things you liked in this were previously, like choping parts of body which feels exacly the same. Bosses are also little a bit disapointing because there's like three version of same boss as seperetes fights, so what's the point? Also parry mechanic make game, at least for me, too easy. Same goes with energy to health which in 1st was optional. I really like both games but you seems to show how Surge 1 suck on everything and 2 is whole new game with unique mechanics.

When del is describing the way you can harvest parts from enemies in Surge 2 by breaking them off and targeting them it reminded me a lot of Horizon Zero Dawn. In that game you could also harvest parts and materials by focusing to break certain parts of machines in combat. Definitely a plus for Surge 2.

Lol, another reviewer claims he played and hated The Surge, then goes on to praise The Surge 2 while both are basically the same, down to exact optimize problem he stated. And he even is a member from a channel I like. I usually don't like those Rapid reviews, feel like they are mostly bias opinion/feeling of this guy rather than in depth review of Angry Joe. But now he stoop so low As to not even try to research before giving his opinion. Well, the surge wasn't that bad. It was bad. The DLC actually improved a bit. But nowhere near the "Dark Souls FPS" game. That thing was terrible. I am glad to see they make such an improvement for the surge 2 though.
@grenzviel44805 жыл бұрын
My only gripes with the game are : a) no active minimap. Especially by the end, I kept ending up just circling around instead of actually progressing. The great wall of jericho's map design in particular was the most annoying map for me, compared to the first few maps. The zip-line just makes everything confusing, whereas using the EMP to open doors were ok because it does not disorient you as hard. b) no fast travel. I mean, I can kind of understand why and it's because by the end, levels become mostly "recycled". For me though, it just feels lazy. c) the final boss was underwhelming. He was too weak. I did not have to retry at all, and I was tanking most of his damage, not even trying to 'parry'. Compared to the first time I fought him, and the boss with 3 forms. I also hated the fact that the final boss seemed like a side character, but then becomes the final boss. I dunno, I think it could work in other games but it just somehow doesnt work in this game. He feels like a side character, a mini-boss until the very end.
@grenzviel44805 жыл бұрын
gameplay is topnotch. Crafting is intuitive. Combat is unique enough to stand out from other souls-like games. I hope they make a new one with better story and possibly less recycled content in the future

Makes me wonder if he really played the first one...executions looks the same, inventory management, UI, upgrades, etc. Hell, even the world and exploration (backtracking and shortcuts)... If he really hated the first, I can't really see how he would like this one. Looks and plays too similar which, I repeat, is good enough for me.

@jackburton62395 жыл бұрын
Honestly, the combat isn't that much different than the first game. Just a tweaked parry system. Calling the first games combat "clunky", but then gushing over this one just seems like he didn't give the first game an honest shake. Dismemberment was a huge part of the first game.

Never played the first one, but a love this one !!!! Played like for 10h already and the gameplay is so smooth !!! All skills no bullshit Perfect souls-like game. But if it’s not the case then never buy it because it’s pretty hard.

Yeah but in performance mode a lot of the textures can look ugly, especially on your armor. I play on the PS4 Pro and somehow the textures look worse than the first one. You should definitely check out the first game if you liked this one. Combat is actually more difficult in the first game because the new parry system makes the game easy af

The same animations can look great or terrible depending on implementation. Were you asleep through the Mass Effect Andromeda controversy? The same animations look much, much better in-game now. Entirely because they aren't implemented in a janky, clunky, awkward manner. The smoothness and flow of animations matter more than the animations themselves.

Since I had fun with the first Surge when I bought it on sale, it's a damn shame this sequel is apparently better in every regard except the fact that it feels like it needs a patch or two. What most ppl will check out if undecided are the users scores in steam or metacritic and those usually reflect how the game is at launch. I wish companies delayed their games until they're actually ready to be played....that's the one thing I really hate about the modern era of videogames.

@trip9g5 жыл бұрын
It's a good game, it truly is, but you can clearly notice that the first was bordering a type of Euro-jank that only a EU publisher will dare dabble in. Games intended as very atmospheric, especially German RPGs, trying to provide some type of different spin on a known formula, but never recovering from glory days of Gothic 1 & 2.

I love both games & The Surge 2 definitely have big improvements over previous title. My problem with this game would be directional parry system with mouse is kinda awful, clearly opted for a controller. maybe providing keybind or alternative direction on keyboard would a good idea. Also, I find a lot of armors designs are just straight up ugly af. Most of it just like strapping a bunch junks on your clothes. Maybe a more closed armored designs & adding customization with color shader or material for armors might be better improvements. I guess back to being "Ironmaus" again 😂 LOL
