Announcements in Brussels-South are by default in both Dutch and French, because Brussels is in the bilingual part of Belgium. This applies not only to the tannoy announcements, but also to the screens in the station (in part because plenty of cities have different names in Dutch vs French). In stations in Flanders announcements would be in Dutch only, in Wallonia they would be in French only. Same for signalization on roads etc. This is by law. However, *some* announcements (tannoy and screens) in Brussels-South are in four languages: Dutch, French, English and German. Those are the announcements for international trains, e.g. Eurostar and ICE etc.
@shirou9790
@shirou9790 5 ай бұрын
The trains going to Brussels Airport are also announced in all 4 languages throughout the country. (Screens remain monolingual in Wallonia and Flanders, and bilingual in Brussels)

In this video you perhaps could have mentioned that the train run hourly, seven days-a-week. The big drawback with this service is that it takes 3 hours 16 minutes to go 230 kms! The train makes EIGHT intermediate stops. (See ERT tables 440 and 445). There used to be faster trains three times a day going through to Strasbourg and Basel, but they have been withdrawn. At risk of stating the obvious, the EU needs a fast train service linking its three main administrative centres, Brussels, Luxembourg and Strasbourg.
@pm3390
@pm3390 10 ай бұрын
there is still 1 faster service a day (3 hours) during weekdays, otherwise all correct

The main problem is the track speed limit being rather low because the line is a bit "curvy". Only the southern part between Libramont and Arlon has track speeds up to 160kph ... I don´t see a real "fast" train service between Brussels and Luxembourg happening. There´s simply no demand for it. A majority of travellers are locals between regional cities and commuters from/to Brussels/Luxembourg (that´s why the trains have a relatively high number of intermediate stops). The number of passengers going the whole Brussels-Luxembourg sector are relatively small. The lack of any bar service onboard is a result of that customer profile. Nevertheless SNCB could install snack/drink vending machines, though. Would certainly help better the overall experience ...
@Fan652w
@Fan652w 10 ай бұрын
@@MHG1023 You seem to miss my point completely. I would not withdraw the existing hourly 'semi-fast' service. The EUROPEAN UNION needs a fast environmentally friendly electric train service linking its three main administrative centres of Brussels Luxembourg and Strasbourg. Politicians, officials (and lawyers) need to get between these three centres. At the moment I suspect that they either drive or fly. I would suggest an EC service every two hours (subsidized by the EU) running from Brussels to Strasbourg calling only at Namur, Luxembourg and Metz.

Some comments here correctly underline the relatively low overall speed of this train. Because it travels through a less populated part of the country, there is no business case for a separate offer of commuter and slow trains for part of the voyage, which means this intercity train indeed has quite some stops. Also, when leaving Brussels towards Namur the train travels over a busy stretch with plenty of long term works. For quite a ling stretch the idea is to bring this line to 4 tracks, with the 2 inner ones adapted for fast services at 160-200 km/h, and the outer tracks for 120-140 km/h use. It is exactly the same project like all of the other lines irradiating out of Brussels. But local governments and serious budget limitations did slow down this project. It should however make large progress for 2027. This Luxembourg bound IC will then win time. But once the train passes Namur, there is another obstacle: these are the Ardennes, a very nice wooded area with rivers in rather narrow valleys. The trainline historically follows some if these valleys which leads to plenty of curves. The line is also crushed between rocks ans the river, so there is little space to improve things. Luckily, over 20 years ago, there was a consensus that this line needs a speed increase. The number if travellers (also by car and plane) on this stretch do not at all justify a dedicated high speed line. So it was decided to upgrade the line. The idea is to get to 160 km/h, but that will not be the case for every kilometre of track. These works include removing rocks and trees hanging above the line, so it is quite a challenge. The limited budget did not allow for speedy work but the end of the works is approaching, probably 2025. So welcome in a few years time, but I’m quite sure there will still be no catering and no wifi since the SNCB does not see this as a priority at all.

There are even slower trains on these lines... But you could compare it to Cornwall, from a Belgian standpoint, all these stops on the IC are small cities and other important transport hubs for their region. While unimportant from a national point of view, they definitely have an important role regionally. So like St Erth or Truro, who in itself aren't major destinations, they are served by buses and trains serving other destinations (e.g. in Ottignies (busiest station in Wallonia), there's a line from Charleroi, Leuven, as well as one to Louvain-la-Neuve, both with large universities, in Marloie, there's a line connecting it with Liège, in Libramont, you can get to Bertrix, and there are buses to Bastogne, Marbehan serves as a hub for much of southern Luxembourg province (Belgium), etc.) Faster trains would be nice, but not at the cost of fewer trains to these stations. The works aren't finished yet, but a big milestone was passed last year, with the re-electrification at 25 kV~ in stead of 3 kV= from the Luxembourg border to Hatrival (between Rochefort-Jemelle and Libramont). You only briefly mentioned the stations in Brussels, @@NonstopEurotrip, the train starts in Brussels-Midi (South) station, goes North first, serving Central and North stations, before making a U-turn and serving 2 more stations, Brussels-Schuman (European Commission, last station with a metro connection) and Brussels-Luxembourg (European Parliament). In reverse, these stations are effectively the main stations for passengers coming to Brussels. Which means that for most passengers, the trip isn't as long as yours.

Ahhhh.....memories! Forty odd years ago, I did the reverse joutney, Luxembourg to Brussels, and things don't seem to have changed much. After a day's meetings in Luxembourg, our group were taken to a night club, and left there about 4 a.m., completely hammered. We caught the train at 7:20-ish, and slept pretty much all the way - a nearly 5 hour trip. It was my first business trip and I remember thinking, I could get used to this!. It took me another 20+ years until I got my wish. And my last work before retirement wqs an 18month spell in Luxembourg - I like the place, even if it is completely dead on Sundays, no shops, cafes or bars open at all (except in your hotel). Thanks for that!

And well-framed, just a few meters to the right, and there's a homeless person camping for months, now. I think Brussels-Midi main station corridor, with all the shops, is okay, as are the HS platforms, but the rest has been abandoned for decades, now. A few years ago, they finally gave the canopies on the older platforms a new coat of paint and cleaned the place. It's sad we have to be happy with that 'progress'. I do like Brussels-North station, though, it's the surrounding area I'm not the biggest fan of. Central station is okay, just very, very busy. And I'm not sure how I feel about the dark tunnel walls. Probably to avoid having to repaint them when they would have been clearer...

And don't forget the passes. 10 single trips for €96 or €59 (-26) between any 2 Belgian stations... You'd still have to buy a ticket for Arlon-Luxembourg for €2.60, but that really is an unbeatable price. There are plans to abolish them and replace them with a reduction card (with capped pricing), but we'll have to see how that turns out.

The only thing I find lacking (mostly) on many such videos (not only yours) is general information on the route - i.e. approximately how often this particular train runs (per day or week) and some indication of if it changes in terms of price and 'busyness' during the day or week. I take this train a lot as I live near Ciney. I've always really enjoyed this train it's super comfy especially those compartments that are very unique, no other SNCB trains have them. One thing to note is that there is no cellular network at all between Rochefort-Jemelle and Libramont. Also, yes transport is free in Luxembourg but if you take RTGR buses that cross borders or SNCB/CFL trains that go outside of Luxembourg you still need to buy a ticket! But for example if you are in Arlon a ticket to Luxembourg is only about 2.50€. You can also risk taking the RGTR bus to Luxembourg without paying but be careful.

great views, but since a few years, the trains are done by Desiro units in stead of these carriages. While perfectly fine for short trips and stopping services, they are not meant for trips such as Liège-Luxembourg... At least the collapsed tunnel seems to be back in order...

And probably in Belgium domestic train never gone have rail catering in the near future. This specific route also it’s driving over the border it’s still planned in the national time table.

Welcome to my country (Luxembourg) where trains are free ;) The service is probably the most frequent international intercity connection there is besides Vienna Bratislava (but not the same distance) In terms of seating, the compartment is by far the worst. The 2nd class coaches are getting a bit dated, but they are about the most comfortable in Europe with good seat pitch even for tall people, a very good tray table and loads of knee room. The first class is even better As for the speed, well they are upgrading the line (which will take till 2030 unfortunately) and the train does quite the city trip in Brussels as the line goes form central to north (which makes no geographic sense) to then turn back south to the european quarter... The 4G signal is soso ;) the lack of power sockets sucks and a few parts are already 160 km/h

Good Morning from a rainy US. It's good to know there's an easy route to Luxembourg from Brussels. Never been to the latter and this would make a quick day trip. I expect one can then get a train to Germany or France from there. With such a high GDP, I'd expect Luxembourg to be expensive, but with free transport svcs, it's probably acceptable. What do you think? Rick in MD
@SeverityOne
@SeverityOne 10 ай бұрын
Part of the reason of the high GDP is because a lot of people that work in Luxembourg, actually live in Belgium, France or Germany. So their income adds to the GDP (simplifying things a bit here; GDP per capita is not the same as average income), but not to the number of inhabitants. Having said that, I've been in Luxembourg city once, as a child, and what I remember most is that we were walking along a street where every other shop was either high-end audio equipment or a jeweller. So it's probably a bit more expensive than EU average, but below Switzerland or Norway levels.

It's a good review although most of the trains don't have the compartment coach, most are fully open. The "I11" coaches are IMHO the best in Belgium, I prefer them to the newer M7s (yet to appear on this route) althogh others may have a different view. You are lucky to have kept the compartment to yourself as those trains are shorter than they used to be due to building work at Luxembourg station forcing them into short platforms and never getting back into a longer platform. There isn't normally good 4G throughout the journey, the hilly bit in the middle has a poor signal, at least for my mobile operator. The more common open coaches have one power socket in roof at each end and that's it - as you said, for the cleaners. Some of the trains on this route are the older M6 double deck stock of which the refurbished ones have a lot more power sockets if someone is desperate. As others have said, the former EC 90/91/96/97, Iris and Vauban, were faster and if you go far enough back had a dining car. There are a couple of SNCB/NMBS dining cars still around but sadly they only get used when someone hires a train.

We did not get mobile range throughout the journey, no WiFi, no USB port to charge a device and a long journey to do such a short distance... it was tiring journey because the train stops for many minutes in each station and the stops are at least 15 to 16 and since we went and came back on the same day it was 6 and a half hours of travelling time. @@NonstopEurotrip It's a bit more complicated regarding the average income. Yes, it's still the highest average salary in Europe (around €48,000), and the highest median salary (around €42,000), but that's a far cry from the €140,000. But that's not salary: that's GDP per capita; in other words, how much each Luxembourger contributes to the country's GDP.
