My cousin and I are both drivers. The V-Star he sold me used to cause him numbness now it causes me numbness. The Harley he bought doesn't cause numbness now.

great video, I just got back into riding and it is usually my left hand that goes number. Going to have to pay attention to how I'm gripping it and my arm position. I have a vstar 1100 and the other day I was on a dark twisty narrow back road and I was beat up after 5 minutes. Too many potholes, frost heaves, broken pavement, sand all over the road and odd gravel. The 1100 is NOT a canyon carver lol. One thing: I AM a little short for the handle bars and pegs. My feet aren't ON the pegs, they are against the sides and I noticed my arms are quite outstretched to the bars. Might have to look at some drag bars or something. Great video, very informative.

Ron DiDonato completely agree, why can’t all riding instructors be like this guy. I’ve done courses before only to be turned off by riding instructors who were up themselves.

I gotta give you props for the whole “play the piano” analogy...I used to have a hard time cornering at speed because I was unknowingly fighting the bike due to me being too tense. I applied the relaxed “play the piano” thing, along with your vision advice and my cornering has significantly improved, so I’m now working on being as relaxed as I can be while riding. Thank you for all you do.

Gotta love those metaphores that Eddie is coming up with. 50 yrs on the road this year and you are someone I would ride with. I’ve had numb hands at times when riding a very technical road and that tells me to loosen up. Also new gloves might cause it till they’re broken in. Keep up the great videos.

You are so right, this is great advice. I’ve just returned to biking after a 30+ year “break”, and I’m experiencing fatigue in my right hand plus some numbness in my thumb. Modern bikes are so much more responsive and I find keeping the throttle under control so much more “refined” than my younger days. My bike has a rain mode which I might try as it dulls the responses, till I get used to it. Another great vid, keep saving lives…

New rider here, had my bike 3 weeks. My hands would get numb after 5 minutes. After watching this video (and PRACTICING daily) it now takes over an hour for the same level of numbness. I 'play the piano' constantly now. I also keep my butt all the way to the rear of the seat & pinch the gas tank with my knees. Thanks for this info, it's been a big help & made a huge difference.

Just wanted to tell you thank you so much for this vid. I got my first motorcycle this past spring and have had so many issues with my hand numbing up on me. This helped more than anything else I’ve tried.

Love your videos...I need to show this to my piano students lol/ you just explained everything I explain to them for the correct technique to avoid hurting shoulders and wrists and proper playing. Perfect analogy. My hand mostly bothers me some just from rolling the throttle, so not quite sure what to change. Thanks Cindy Z650 rider/piano teacher

Usually the right hand gets sorer faster for most, you're using the throttle and front brake at same time...maybe consider a throttle lock (cruise control type thing) to help out. leeparksdesign.com/omni-cruise-throttle-lock/

Hey Eddie! Great tips! Works for them all, the bikes ;) Being too tight on the bars triggers a whole lot of problems and chain reactions starting with the numbness. Our riding ability is immensely reduced compromising our own safety. I ride a CBR and I hook myself to the tank with the legs (tank grips are a huge help here) leaving this heavy work to these stronger limbs allowing me to relax the upper torso. Now I can focus my senses to a whole lot of variables (cars, pedestrians, road signs, road conditions, tire grip, etc.. you name it) because I’m not tired, yet! This also helps to get the feeling of being one with the bike and not that jiggling around the seat. The more you can feel the bike and being relaxed, the more in control you are. Thanks for this. I rode for 25 years and then took about 14 yrs off.. Got back on a bike and my tennis elbow was screaming at me within 5 minutes. And the finger numbness was off the chain. Im having to consciously tell myself to bend my arms and relax. I appreciate the “play the piano” analogy. Its getting better as I get back in the swing of things.

I have been taught the same. Instead the example they used was your holding an EGG in each hand. So soft grip. Relax and body positioning + grip the tank with your knees so it takes that stress and pressure of your arms / hands..

I ride a standard bike and found that my hands were going so numb that my hands began to hurt. I adjusted the handle bars down and towards me just a bit and it made a world of difference.

Great video and so true. When I first started riding I was squeezing that grip for dear life. Now and what you're supposed to do is have a grip where you can slip your hand on and off the grip easily. I find this works best for me. I ride a ZX7.

As someone who grew up racing harescrambles, I can tell you that this is probably the single most important thing you can learn. Being calm and relaxed on the bike will not only reduce arm pump by a huge amount, but it will help reduce fatigue altogether, and you won't be near as sore later on after you're done riding. Also learning about counter steering will help, trusting your tires in the turns, and learning how/when to be braking vs giving it gas are also things that will make someone a better rider.

Outstanding information I've been riding for almost 50 years, and after a few years away from bikes, I forgot this and started tensing up. In my early years, I was going 800 to 1,000 miles nonstop without numbness.

I saw this video 2 weeks ago, been watching you for over a month. I am a new motor cycle rider who experienced numbness and fatigue in my hands during rides and even after riding, it would last for over a day. Next morning every time I woke up i just felt no strength in my hands. When riding I normally over gripped my handlebars not in relaxed mode which is the reason of what I felt. Now after watching this video, I immediately applied what you've taught and suggested, and guess what? BANG! It was effective and I just want to tell you how helpful your channel. I didn't feel the same way anymore. Keep up and Godbless you.

Thanks for the video, great analogies. I used to have my left thumb, index and middle fingers go numb with certain gloves. I changed gloves and viola! wierd no numbness. Needless to say, I tossed those in the garbage...lol So maybe some of your viewers can check into that. Thumbs up 👍

In my and others' experience I've learned it's 99% due to gripping too hard...sometimes it is improper fitting gear.

Yes, different gloves worked for me too .. the seam around the palm was the issue. I've also got a throttle rest which allows a more relaxed grip. I love your videos, FE :) I've been practicing weight shifting around bends on my boulevard 800 .. just taking it easy on the twisties going to work ..no need to get the knee down, but getting a feel for the concept. Hi Eddie, another great video mate! I remember asking this question at my first rider training day way back. The response was the same as yours "it's you and the death grip" a scenario all newbies would likely encounter. But the solution given to me was more about the practical side and "grip the bike with your legs" was the response. That is to say, my instructor was saying that by gripping the tank with your legs, you place far less strain on the arms, thus less numb hands/arms going on. After practicing, sure enough, he was right. Even after 16 years of riding, I do sometimes catch myself out getting sore/numb hands and then I remember the training. I read comments here about the wrists being below the arm on sports bikes, and that's also true as I have sports bikes and know the pain involved. Especially at my age now of 40. Some bikes are just plain painful, like my 2004 ZX636R which loves to vibrate like a mad dog at around 100Kph & 6000rpm (or about 60Mph in your language). That's our highway speed here and so it gets hard after going on longer rides. I did a 5 hour ride on this bike one day, found that I couldn't get off the bike to take a piss because my legs were stuck in the "race position" and it was painful trying to move them to stand up!

I have been following you and your tips since I started riding. Even before. When I knew i was gonna get a bike I did as much studying as I could and found your material early, and easy to listen to. I've only been riding a year but in that year I've had a KLX 230 and QUICKLY grew out of it as I'm 6ft and about 200lbs or so. It was a great bike to get my feet wet with riding in traffic. Then bought a 2020 BMW F 750 GS, rode it for about the last 2 months of last Summer and learned I really have no desire to strap up a bunch of luggage and go travel the country, or do any off road riding at all. That's when I fell in love with my current bike that I've had for about a month now. I picked up the orange and black 2020 ZX-6R 636. Lately I've had the numbness issue, but wasn't so much my hand, but really focused on just my fingers or finger tips. But only my right hand, which means I'm doing something correct with my left hand, because I can pretty much corner with only my right hand that's how light my left hand is. But for whatever reason I can't stay as relaxed on the right. I'm gonna try to adjust my riding position and allow for a more forward posture, because I will admit I do the Lion King thing more than I admit. Wow bro, amazing advice. I’ve been riding for 2 weeks, feeling super confident and natural on my GSXR 600 but this is one of the issues I’ve been having is hand and wrist pains. I’ve been death gripping the handlebars subconsciously, and heard from other riders to relax your hands but have been feeling like I have to make a strong concerted effort to relax the hands on the bike. Just watched your video, I leaned forward, bent the arms and squeezed the gas tank with my knees and it feels a lot easier to stay loose. Thanks bro! Still need to make it a habit to lean forward. On another note, I’ve been having some pain in the back of my neck/spine area after riding for an hour or so. Any way to alleviate that? I’ve had back and neck pains for a while to begin with due to being out of shape and slouching a lot.

Thanks! I'm glad it helped!! That's the problem you're going to have to deal with riding a sports bike, why do you think I went to an upright bike!? lol Sportsbike like yours are just barely street legal, they're made for the track, not necessarily going to work and back. Very limited...it's made for performance, not comfort.

Thanks man. I'm currently learning to get my full A license in the UK and this is the best advice I've seen/heard yet. I'm way too tense and death gripping the hell outta the bars. Hold a potato chip and play the piano. 👍👍

Thank you for making this video. I've had this problem and figured that it was from squeezing my throttle hand to much. Though I had already figured this out for myself, I thought I was the only one with this problem. I feel much better knowing that I'm not the only one. Thanks I feel much better now and I will practice what you recommended! Thumbs up and subbed!

I had MAJOR issues with this as a beginner (and a LOT of difficulties relaxing shoulders which then cuts off hand circulation) Your potato crisp touch tip in conjunction with cornering tips has made a HUGE difference - every time i get a monster gust of wind et al i specifically chant "potato chips" and relax upper body, reset hand grip strength and trust the bike - really helped me reduce beginner anxiety 🤣👍🏻

I like your 'flipbook' style in your videos. Brings a nice balance of attention between yourself and illustrations and not bombarding the entire screen with loads of images and text. :D I ride a sports-style (now a sport tourer) bike. Before I ride I try and enter a 'zen' state of mind. If i'm uptight or angry, I walk away from the bike, make a cup of tea or drink water etc... It helps the back and core muscles relax too. Keeping the core fresh and stable relaxes the arms, neck and shoulders.

Aside from medical reasons, death grip is the main cause.

the numbness could also be a sign of carple tunnel syndrome so if it persists go see your doctor. I suffered the numbness for years and put it down to the cold and bike vibration but eventually it turned out to be carple tunnel had the operations and its been fine for the last 6 years

Yes, all medical reasons aside, it's most likely gripping too hard.

Yep, my hands would go numb when riding. I had the carpel tunnel surgery and now I can ride for hours.

Just started riding regularly on a new bike. I’m working hard on holding on with my legs so my arms and legs are relaxed, like I’m riding a horse. My right hand still gets numb. I’ll remember about playing the piano. One day, I hope to ride like Fast Eddie, though I’m not fast, not an Eddie, and I’m 50. 😁

I have a Naked bike. I don't have a problem with numb hands, but after a longer ride...Maybe 25 to 30 miles my toes kind of go numb. I repossession my feet for a little and move them back to position periodically and it helps a little. I think most of it will have to do with getting used to riding longer distances. I don't know though. I'm still new to riding. I have only been on the bike for about a month and I average about 3 rides per week and about 14-60 miles per trip.

Yes, foot position is another video I made...long trips you'll be moving them around correct! I ride up to 400+ miles, sometimes in one day and I don't go numb or have any tingling...lol...but I'm kinda crazy and really focus on relaxing while I'm riding!

Haven't watched your video on it but it's something I intuitively did anyway and it was years later before I ever saw any sort of video about it. I do conscious relaxation every 10-15 minutes. In order for your shoulders, arms and hands to be loose and relaxed, your core has to be engaged. So the exercise goes: Core strong! Hands open & relaxed. Arms limp and floppy. Shoulders loose. Roll them! Head & neck flexible. You will immediately notice the blood flow surge into your extremities. Bonus: you’ll be a better and more responsive rider. Tension creeps back in quickly so do this often.

I remember when I first got my zx-10 years ago. I was chocking the grips to death out of fear ,and my hands went numb. I also had the "lion king position" that made it even worse. Good advice here in this video. I wish someone would have told me this in the beginning. I finally learned to relax on my own, and bought some good riding gloves and it's not a problem now.

I own a 2016 Street Glide... I love this machine, been riding for a short time, my right hand gets numb after about 30 min of driving, I'm thinking of putting foam grips on to give me some cushion. When I'm at a stop light I put the bike in "neutral" shake it off, then I continue on my way... I like this video, great information, thank you. Tony.

Good Session. I had this problem the longest time. Then I realized even though the gloves were of my size that was the problem. I got one size bigger gloves and the problem went away immediately. Thank you for all your tips.

So happy I found this video it explains a lot - i'll be getting my abba stand out tomorrow helps stand the bike up and i'll be practicing sitting on my BMW S1000RR and moving my arse back away from the tank. I do have a problem with my right hand getting very sore and numb just moving my arse back away from the tank helps drop my arms. Thanks so much i'll be practicing that tomorrow using the abba stand then taking the bike out trying it for real. Thanks for the upload very much appreciated ride safe Moto 😎👌
