I had a completely psychotic episode in December after using my asthma inhaler during a severe chest infection. The steroids also sent my blood sugars very high. As soon as I stopped taking the inhaler things started to improve. It took a few weeks before I was back to normal. One of the reasons this happened is that I had not been taking the steroids daily and went from zero to a hundred i.e. zero to maximum dose quite quickly. This must have increased my dopamine levels. I run a bit high at the best of times. Fortunately, I never go low. I'm still struggling a bit with some hypo issues as my brain can be a bit "happy".

I was misdiagnosed as Bipolar in 2009. I was on high doses of Beclomemthasone inhaler and Fluticasonse propironate for many years. I had underlying Type 2 Diabetes, PCOS, and Celiac Disease that was diagnosed in 2017. What made things much worse- I had weight loss surgery and developed Post Bariatric Reactive Hypoglycemia - which was not diagnosed until I woke up in a hospital after being in a diabetic coma. I have been properly reevaluated and now off all meds,and treating my hypoglycemia. I am grateful for access to research studies, online support groups, and educated medical professionals. I had a TBI in 2015

My psychiatrist died suddenly and I was cut off from my PTSD meds cold turkey. The new doctor scrapped my previous diagnosis and diagnosed me with bipolar after less than 10 minutes during my first appointment. I looked up the symptoms and it just doesn't fit me at all. My suspicion is that I was having a temporary mania or anxiety because of the situation with my meds. No matter what though, it was a terrible time to diagnose anything.

Great point! I became manic will suffering from psychosis from chronic sleep deprivation, illness and pain. I wasn't dangerous, but I thank God I had no interactions with the police because I was not capable of making any sense.

Interesting about Prednisone. If I take a dose 3 days in a row I lose my mind on the third day. Drs have always been "that's weird" or not believed me. Only one had heard of such a thing, nice to know it is an actual thing.

Thank you for this Dr. Marks. I live with an autoimmune inflammatory disease, Ankylosing Spondylitis, and diagnosed with Bipolar 1 . My rheumatologist and Psychiatric NP worked together in the 2 times I had to go high dose steroid or long period of steroid when I was in a severe flare. Both times I went straight into manic episodes, but grateful they were short because my medical team had a plan in place already.

@@krzysztof4543bc hypomania can cause you to do a lot of embarrassing things, make you feel out of control from life like.. attention problems, forgetting what youre doing every 3 seconds, etc., literally making you lose your sanity, as in doing the same thing lver and over without realizing, getting little to no sleep going thru the day with energy as if you did get s good nights sleep for days on end, then you have to recover from not getting any sleep during the comedown. it sucks. i mean definitely doesnt suck in the beginning and not knowing you are hypomanic but the comedown is awful. and dont get me wrong, SSRIs are terrible withdrawals too. ive gone thru it too. but it doesnt make it not a terrible experience for someone else. and its a pretty scary one too when you dont know/realize its mania especially. gotta remember its different for everyone

Mania took my hand and showed me that reality is constructed in a huge factory run by little hidden creatures. While I was distracted by the beauty of that machine she surprised me by showing me that I'm one of the creatures in that cosmic factory as well, who is merely suffering from the illusion that I'm a human living in the Universe that was think we know. As I was coming to grips with that, she showed me that myself and all the other creatures running the machine are actually just singular, primal points of observation -- possessing no other actual attributes than the pure ability to know. Before I could process all of this I was gently transformed back into my body and sent home again.

I was using my light box for Seasonal Affective Disorder and I started to feel, “better than good”😆 I cut back a little and when I got a new light box the instructions suggested that use can cause mania. Not gonna lie-it felt great! But being a psychologist I figured it wasn’t going to end well if I didn’t cut back a bit temporarily.

Thanks for these videos. If I might add one more, also watch out for Rhodiola. Rhodiola is in many health/vitamin stores in blends made for mood improvement, focus/concentration, and memory (and in some other blends too, so always read ingredient lists!). It can make you manic within 2-3 days if bipolar runs in your family. People in health/vitamin stores usually don't know this and may praise the blend. Some unexpected drugs also (such as the antibiotic Biaxin) can cause mania in a small percentage of people. 1% of people may not sound like many, but if a million people take the drug and 1% go manic, that's 10,000 folks. Mania is bad not just because you talk too much and too fast, take stupid risks, spend massive amounts of money, wreck your relationships... you also lose the ability to sleep much if at all, which quickly creates a bunch of other issues.

I'm glad you described this in the way you did. I believe I experienced secondary mania or something similar. I had pretty severe burnout due to comorbid psychiatric conditions and eventually a severe vitamin deficiency, when I would get particularly exhausted, I would have brief episodes of mania like episodes that sometimes included psychosis. When I had pmdd, the symptoms also mimicked bipolar, but where distinctly tied to my cycle. The only reason I was not misdiagnosed with bipolar is because I was assumed to be faking or over-exaggerating my symptoms. No, I am not glad I wasn't taken seriously, but I am glad that I don't have to deal with the bipolar misdiagnosis as some people I know have. Some people can be really messed up when they are treated with drugs for a disorder they do not possess.

@@mbybak The best I've been able to do so far is vitamin supplementation and dietary things. I'm hoping to eventually find a better and more consistent solution, because it's still not amazingly manageable, though I no longer have hallucinations due to it. I've heard that some people do well on anti-depressants or hormone supplements (I personally don't). For me personally, my pmdd can be very severe if I don't take vitamin D on a daily basis and around my cycle, I tend to eat more protein rich food when I need to be awake (sometimes it helps with the fatigue). I have found experimentally that some foods sit worse with my stomach or cause me to have worse cramps, though most of these I later found out I was intolerant to so that could be less helpful to you. I wish you luck in finding a solution

My mania was caused multiple times by going into serotonin overdose from my antidepressants interacting with migraine medication (migraine abortives) and a certain type of antibiotics that have an effect on serotonin. It was all secondary mania

OH MY GOODNESS! That explains so much. I didn't react negatively to Adderall when diagnosed with ADD. So, they said I have borderline personality disorder. (I refused to take two new meds at once, and I'm glad I did.) However, I have also found out in my adult life that I have Hashimoto's (and now that I know what to look for, I was experiencing symptoms as a teen- just went undiagnosed). I could very well be borderline, but it could also just be the Hashimoto's. When I miss my thyroid meds, I get irrational for sure. I do want to note that though ADD and Hashimoto's has some overlap, I do feel like I need both levothyroxine and Adderall to be fully functional. My primary medication is levothyroxine, and I adjust the Adderall accordingly so that I don't get a racing heart if I drink a little caffeine.

@@Lil_Yuri Essentially, people with bipolar disorder "randomly" cycle through emotions in a chemical imbalance sort of way. People with borderline personality disorder tend to experience rapic cycle of emotions as a reactionary response to their environment, which is why dialectical behavioral therapy is so effective. Therefore, Adderal doesn't negatively impact people with BPD, but it can impact people with bi-polar. Everyone has "control" of their body, even if it takes extreme effort, but since bipolar isn't exclusively reactionary, it screws with whatever imbalance causes the instability in the first place. On the other hand, people with borderline personality disorder usually develop this disorder as a response to repeated trauma, like excessive bullying, living with a narssasistic or otherwise mentally/physically abusive parent.

I can’t take antidepressants for my anxiety/depressive symptoms ‘cause they make me manic/hypomanic or cycling through several intense negative emotional states for hours then leave me shaky as hell afterwords-ie, pretty sure it’s a serotonin overdose. And when I was prescribed lyrica for what was initially assumed to be fibromialgia (it’s not; it’s ankyolizing spondilitis), the serotonin in the drug did something similar: uncontrolled depressive thoughts and a decreased ability to focus then left me incredibly shaky and sluggish when it finally finally worked its way out …and well…it’s damn difficult to get anyone to listen to me about it. When one psychiatrist FINALLY did, it was to basically call me hysterical to the nurse he told to come in when I burst into tears after months of him being pissy about me wanting to do genetic testing and not even reading my chart Ever-when I asked my therapist play Devil’s Advocate? Yeah, I don’t score high enough on Borderline or Bipolar or other personality disorders for it to even really be a concern; anything that almost looks like it is already a symptom of my diagnosed adhd and presumed cptsd + my anxiety/depressive symptoms improved After I had time for auto immune and IBS medications to build up …I’ll see if a psychiatric nurse practitioner finally listens to me. My therapist insists they’re generally better about this + mention my symptoms/concerns that I’m prone to what’s probably serotonin syndrome…which I did with the psychiatrist even before I knew there was a probable NAME for this. But like. I’m seriously questioning if my symptoms are Actual anxiety/depression vs just poor self esteem and secondary to the other stuff…as messing with my serotonin even on low doses is NOT GOOD and there’s no evidence for an underlying personality disorder (which was only ever mentioned by an asshole to discredit me, not because of any clear cause for concern.)

I can attest to the Prednisone issues. It's a good med, it works, but it just messes with you so much. I've become so sensitive to it, I react under 40mg. Thank you for acknowledging the possible manic effects of steroids. A lot of folks don't take it seriously, and that's hard when you're already dealing with medical stuff.

I had a few alcohol induced manic episodes. I don’t drink anymore and am a recovering alcoholic. But there was a handful of times I drank all night/barely slept and then the next day I had Mania. I was aware it was going on. It was horrible when the low came. Now that I don’t drink (over 2 years sober) I haven’t had this happen to me anymore.

I have been seeing different physiatrists the first told me that I have a schizotypal personality with slight Schizophrenia symptoms and the second told me I have a MADD. sometimes I laugh and talk my myself but never heard any voices or see things and usually for one week i continue talking my myself and shouting and laughing without any reason. I am currently on Paroxetine HCL 30mg and a sleeping pill of about 7.5mg, I am 37 years old and never experience such things in my life it was just since last year I am having a depressed mood, etc. I am currently working and doing all my job and taking care of my family etc but just worried my mood is not getting better I am very against taking any antipsychotic meds and I am so inspired by Dr. Peter Bergin and Noble price winner a great mathematician Josh Nash thoughts. Sounds like my mom since 2003 - 10/28/2015 and again 12/2023 but her Psychiatrist Doctor Lyndon Neighrhood Health says because my mom has been on Risperatal since about 2004 so he says she does not have Mania , I’ve been with mom with this for the past 21 years Doc. I have MS and have had a few rounds of very high dose steroids. i notice i am very short tempered and emotionally labile...but lately i have noticed a pattern of severe, almost psychotic depression when ill (i wanted to burn my house down with me in it, fantasized and obsessed over it) luckily i have enough self-awareness to see when i am ill, and not get sucked in to my delusions and fantasies. then i get steroids and the depression clears..and next thing i know i spend months without a care in the world...my spending, eating, risk taking all increase and i could care less of the consequences. i was dx w BP1 by a therapist as a result and we both still wondered if this is med/MS induced. then you mentioned baclofen, which i take for muscle spasms and WOW. ok, so i am not inherently suffering from a psych illness, it is my MS and the drugs i take to cope with my MS. thank you Dr Marks!!! I will share this with my therapist and doctor, thank you!

It happened to me, I was using dextromethorphin in low doses for chronic fatigue, then I had serious pain issues, and used it in high doses for pain.. big mistake

For me a sleeping pill (trazadone) was the best medicine for me. Depression does not seem to occur as long as I get sleep

I had a brain injury from CORTISONE and I spend a lot of money trying to do hearing tests and finding a good therapist and instead I ended up on benzos and now 2 years later I still cannot even walk or talk properly let along live a good life and I was fully functional in life and work and just asked for a psychologist and temporary sick leave for puking puking puking and a concussion but my doctor said I had no medical problem

I took 5-HTP and I think that it triggered my recent episode. If I trace it back, getting that supplement might have been a bad idea since I do have a diagnosis of Bipolar.

What does it mean if I experience auditory hallucinations, but without paranoia or delusional thinking? I am Borderpolar and ADHD, I've experienced hearing voices many times, they have never distressed me, I knew they weren't real, they were very clear, they were voices of people I know, and they usually say really funny things. I was also diagnosed as Psychotic but otherwise not specified and undefined personality disorder. My doctor has never given me a reason for why I experience these things, and I'm curious, it's not like I'm worried about it, I just wonder what the cause could be

Thanks for you explanation of Mania. It is hard what I deal with I have Schizoaffective Disorder Manic Type. I am mainly in a Paranoid state with the Mania but It is more manageable to where I am not having as bad as Impulses running to the computer for 8hrs a day. I was literally on the computer all day like glued to it what helped was taking invega, lithium, and olanzapine. I can go to walmart now which is a good thing.

I have bipolar and recently injured my arm, causing swelling and nerve pain. Doctor prescribed only 4 days of prednisone, and warned that it could cause mania. Day two I was sitting at my desk at work and literally felt the shift into a manic episode. Stopped taking it (with dr. guidance) and the next day was fine. Unfortunately(?) it wasn't the kind of mania where I get super productive, just twitchy and driven :(

I have Hosimoto’s that has been untreated for almost a decade. A doctor thinks I am bipolar 2, however I don’t feel that I am. I feel that it is my hosimoto’s. I honestly don’t want to take medication for either.

I have three questions. 1) With all of the illnesses in the DSM-5-TR, are Psychiatric prescribers trained in/treat all of said illnesses? 2)Are Psych Prescribers able to treat complications from disorders? i.e skin infections from picking in patients with OCD, or prescribing analgesics to those that might hurt themselves. 3) With SGA’s proving as an effective adjunct therapy in treating TRD, why can’t low does of long-acting SGA’s be used in patients that have issues with medication compliance? Some years back a doctor prescribed Levaquin 500 mg. It made me so depressed. I was crying, angry, snapping at everyone. I only took it 3 days. By the 3rd day I knew I needed to stop taking it! I think somebody was trying to mess me up. I went for a very bad cold, I healed myself with natural substance! 1st thing, the dosage was to high. I've had mania induced three times each by prednisone, methylpredisolone, and baclofen while taking adderall xr concurrently for adhd. it's made me question if I have bipolar disorder as well as ADHD. the thing is that the mania wore off after I stopped taking those meds. I told my psychiatarist about these reactions. he was like "oh yeah, that'll do it" and told me to avoid steroids, baclofen, gabapentin, and lyrica in the future.

Earlier today at 5:30am I drank 2 Black Riffle coffees and thought they wouldn't last more than twelve hours. I got off work at 11:00am. I ate, drank a iced tea *More*Cafine* , went home, took 2 gummies when I probably should have only taken one or none because of the caffeine hi I already had. It is now 6:16pm, I'm spry as a jackrabbit. I have had treatment in the past I do technically unconfirmed biplor( meaning they wanted me to pay money I don't have to confirm it. ), PTSD, Care Giver Trauma , Widow/Widowers grief. You could probably say I'm a hoarder, and only admitting it because I'm high which instantly makes me feel bad, Yeah well as you can clearly read I got a lot going on. I'm probably trying to be funny here but all of this is true. I'm pretty sure I'm the above plus ADHD. I've got so much wrong with me but even in this state thoughts of ending things remain that, just thoughts. Is interesting or ignorant drivel? I'm actively trying to make it sound entertaining and for that I apologize because I believe I could very well be all the above. 😢😢

I overdosed on stimulants (8x my daily dose) and experienced just this. I have ADD (ADHD no hyperactivity) and i'm medicated on dexamphetamine. I found it quite interesting mania isn't exclusive to bipolar and count some other mental disorders, cool stuff

what does it mean if its induced by SSRIs? I went from sleeping ~17 hours a day for months without medication, to not sleeping for 3 days when I started paroxetine. My GP didn't believe me and said it was just a placebo because they take weeks to work, but I know I couldn't have tricked myself into a change that extreme. Similar things have happened (really quick cheesy poetry running circles in my head whilst not sleeping for days and planning becoming really good at something) before trying hard drugs and without SSRIs, as a result of hard drugs, and as a result of a few different SSRIs. The chaos is so confusing. Thanks for the videos, they're a huge relief and always insightful :)
