If Susan Rogers isn't the best interview. I mean her intelligence knowledge of Prince & reverence of his legacy comes thru like no other. She is 1 of the few people inside his circle that I like 2 hear from. Others have shown little respect or tact when speaking of their experience playing with the 'purple yoda'.1 in particular is the sax player(whose name isn't worth mentioning)...in my humble opinion he should be banned from Paisley Park and never given any invites 2 any events.. symposiums...etc,..concerning Prince. I digress, Susan Rogers is such a beautiful soul insightful and just a delight 2 hear. *Much respect & love 2 Chris & Bryan 4 an excellent show.

Great interview, Susan is so generous in the amount of time she gives people and the level of detail she offers up. It’s so clear that she has the most profound admiration for Prince and wants as many people to put him on the same pedestal as she does…and rightly so.

Susan Rogers and Peggy McCleary really paved the way for women sound engineers and technicians in the music studio. They also showed women should be respected in the workplace. They are pioneers. These interviews have been amazing. Thankyou for all your hard work ladies and other technicians + engineers as well. That's why today we have all that awesome music. And thankyou to the artists as well. Su.xx😮 Peggy, Apollonia and Susan Rogers are amazing.👏 Thankyou You Can Play Guitar for this great interview.

Holy shit what a great innerview. As an amateur music producer, I love the way Susan explains super complex musical ideas in a totally relatable and easy to understand fashion. I was a little intimidated by the 3 hour runtime at first but I feel like it’s whizzing by at super speed. This could be 8 hours long and I would still be enraptured the whole time. Way to go you guys!

Susan Rogers is a national treasure. I’m watching the interview right now and loving it! This was a true power move on your part Bryan, getting Susan on your channel. Outside of the community of die-hard fans/fams, the public really isn’t aware of how prolific a songwriter Prince was. I’d be curious to know what she remembers of his songwriting output.

I would like you to listen and watch “Insatiable” and “Scandalas” and you can see the androgynous side of him or perhaps the reason women loved him. He understood the inner mind of women entirely. He challenged women to explore that inner mind. Listening to Susan, you can hear the devotion to him, the knowledge of the genius he was and her love for music and the science of it she discovered through him. What did we lose and why didn’t we appreciate him as much as we could have? He could have taught others and he was a great teacher. Look at all his bands and how the musicians involved became exceptional musicians through his influence.

Don't know if you've heard. My favorite prince story, David Z. told and witnessed. One day prince carried his own engineer with him to a studio. And studios have an engineer assigned to the studio. Prince set up the console and said "Don't touch anything ". After a few minutes the engineer in the room moved a tremble a centimeter, prince said on the microphone "Name you have a phone call at reception ". He walked down the long hallway and said "Phone call "? She said "No ". He walked back into the studio, in a couple of minutes he moved the fader a centimeter, prince said "name you have a phone call at reception". He said "ok I see". A young 24 year old was so BOSS. How do you discipline a stranger that is messing with your stuff? And he had to come up with that in a couple of seconds.

What a brilliant interview. I have seen her interviewed before, and you two did a great job. OMG to be present for her bringing out a soundboard with Prince’s favorite sounds etc and teasing out the various aspects of music, the way he liked; would be priceless. The estate could make money which it would need, and she should be allowed to promote her book since it too is about listening to music. The question at the end, had me crying, I agree with her, I would like to think he was just done, and ready to go home. Best interview. Loved it.

Thank you all, great podcast. Thanks Susan for sharing, you have a good orah around you, and a big heart too. Such a pleasant lady to hear talk. And your love for prince is real. Prince's fans do respect you. I've pondered that question many times. "Did prince know what was going on the day he passed"? With your opinion as it is. Why would prince put his clothes on backwards and go into his elevator to pass on all alone? He had to know pictures would be taken and the whole world would see him in that position. I think he had too much pride to let that happen on his way out. Not to mention "Drugs ", As the headlines in the same sentence with his name. Being the last thing people remember him as. It can't be true, that he was willing to go out that way. It just doesn't make sense. I really enjoyed your talk on here. Thank you for your time.

It's important for you to get people who inspired Prince. Spike Moss. Prince used to go 2 some place called "The Way" it was like YMCA. But, they set it up for young people in North MPLS. to learn how to hone their musicianship. It was an Arts program. So Susan didn't talk about that. Because, she is oblivious to that part of Prince's history.
@thesolitaryadventurer
@thesolitaryadventurer 2 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. The Way was such a formative stage of his musical development for sure. I wonder if s he would ever have mentioned it to that era of personnel....? I'm sure just a few years later it would have been spoken about frequently with Sonny T joining the band. I'm actually more curious now about Prince as the latter day man. 2004 onwards. Where he seemed to have matured and become a mentor of sorts to those around him. Personally I've heard from most of the people willing to speak about him when he was a young man. And I find the dichotomy of him as the older man - that doesn't fit the trajectory of what the young man would have made you think he would turn out like - is fascinating.

Thank you Garfield :) I picked up very quickly by doing reaction videos that Prince would have been a very demanding person to work for (rightfully so as he wanted the best out of everyone) but working under those conditions would take it's toll on anyone after awhile, being at someone's constant beckon call and putting your personal life last.... as it finally got to Susan. I wasn't surprised when she explained to us the end between her and Prince, but they did some great stuff together :)
@garfieldharrison510

@@YesYouCANPlayGuitar Spike Moss was one of his mentors at "The Way". Prince apparently would show up to perfect his craft. Sonný Thompson also went there as well. "THE WAY" was a hub for creative people. Preferably young people. In those days. They needed to have something for the Black youths of North Mpls. They were blocked for a long time in certain locations in Mpls He's still around. Maybe you want to do an interview with him. Because he knew Prince when he was forming who he was.

Gentlemen, Bryan and Chris, just finished watching in its entirety. To you both, and Susan Rogers - thank you!! A very productive and insightful interview: you both asked questions that came from different perspectives and Susan responded in her usual honest and eloquent way. No BS here, no sensationalism and no silly questions (thinking about a lot of the questions generally asked about Prince. So much to digest and think about. I thought you both did a fantastic job (wait, did I already say that) and I get the impression Susan was appreciative of the approach you both took. Will we see another interview with Susan Rogers? Will she take on board some of the ideas suggested to her about Celebration? All fab stuff. Best wishes to you both - and to Susan Rogers. Tony.

Panera and Chic Fill Le are the only things close to Paisley Park, but you probably can find something more robust going out bound from PP.

Great job. I enjoyed the interview. Congratulations that the channel has developed to such a stage that such content is possible. If a part 2 happens it would be interesting to know when was the last time Susan Rogers saw Prince. It would also be interesting to hear her thoughts of Prince's relationship with the Time (Morris, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis). Susan spoke some about Prince working with Shelia E, the Bangels, etc but The Time must have been around too.

I'm a huge Prince fan and I admit that I never thought of him as a guitar player until he released LotusFlow3r. Once I noticed his guitar playing more forward in the mix I realised how good he was.

Susan asking "can I tell you a story?" is a bit like Prince asking "can I play my guitar?"

How did this sweet woman work with Prince! lol. There is somethiing mysterious about what we like. I am now getting into Egyptian pop. South American samba. Prince actually made me more open minded. He taught white folk how to admire soul music and black people in liking rock.

The music industry should have awarded Prince as a BILLIONAIRE especially with his hyper creativity and his contribution with the double and triple albums that he put out in his career, let alone the many songs given away to other artists. We will all be dead and gone and they will STILL be putting out albums from the vault for next 100 YEARS.

Great channel Bryan, I'm a huge Prince fan and I think you yourself are just a Great guitar player I've actually sought out you playing and was amazed with not only your playing but having a wife as a teacher, Your knowledge and patience skills just shows off your teaching skills as well! If our son whose 6 now ever stops wanting to beat on every pot and pan he sees I know where I'd point him to if he ever picks up a guitar,,! Love the Prince content, can't get enough of it. This Susan Rodgers interview has been one of her best and she seemed to really enjoy the knowledge you both have. Great channel man keep up the Purple deep dives cause they are very much appreciated 🎵🎵🎵 👍

Well that said by Suzan about Jackson's furious and eager on Prince completely tells the story that MJ always afraid of "being second" or "inspiration + creativity" whos grasp it first. Prince was alone and unique no musical background or being taught... MJ was unique Prince was unique and much more ...

MJ had quite an unusual opportunity being born into a group. Sure, he had some talent but nothing extraordinary. Many children can sing but are not given such an opportunity. He was surrounded by professionals who wrote his songs and later they would turn his simple ideas into music. When he went solo he spent money like it was going out of fashion on marketing his image. MJ stormed out of the movie premiere of Purple Rain claiming he didn't like the way Prince (the Kid) was treating his girlfriend. The truth is, he got to see Prince perform and tear the place up and without using special effects.

My suspicion from other things Susan has said about that incident is that it was someone she had worked with earlier on - so one of Crosby, Stills & Nash is my guess. Not cool of Prince whichever way you slice it. Understandable given he was socially awkward at that age but seems to have been unnecessary and impolite.

i think Prince had ego and everybody does mistakes... he regret making mistakes he stated that, so i think he settled these off but i also think that he had reasons for doing it... He was crystal clear with his music and every aspect of it. Sinnead argues for it but i think he had reasons to that as well...he was an advisor and tried mentoring. How he loved The bangles and how he responded to Sinnead? There are lot of things we wont know for ever as Prince gone but its ok and better this way
