The Suspicious Downfall of Kendrick Lamar's Former Label...

People have been calling out Kendrick Lamar's FORMER label, Top Dawg Entertainment, for YEARS. And now that Kendrick Lamar has left the label to start his own, along with TDE’s co-president, Dave Free, fans are getting suspicious. Could this have to do with the many times SZA tweeted about her frustration with the label executives? Why Ab-Soul and Isaiah Rashad took 5 years to drop a single? What the hell happened to Schoolboy Q?
But the most important question of all…
Why is Kendrick Lamar now being out rapped on his own songs by rappers like KODAK BLACK? Alright... i’m just kidding but we gotta admit this isn’t typical behavior for a man like Kendrick Lamar.
Without this guy, it’s debatable that many of the artists on TDE would not be as popular as they are today. In someway, shape or form, Kendrick Lamar has played a part in nearly everyone’s success on the label, simply because he’s the most famous one on the roster, doing features and tours with them.
And no big money maker like this just opts out of a label out of complete nowhere, we seen rappers like J. Cole be able to expand while still remaining on RocNation’s roster. So… what happened? With 99.9% of the members from the label being antisocial who rarely ever pop out on social media, its difficult to piece together whether or not the label is seemingly falling apart.
However, Kendrick Lamar, SZA, and Isaiah Rashad have all spoken about their thoughts on the label falling off. In this video, I show you guys all that they Kendrick, SZA, and Isaiah Rashad have said. And their responses will help decode whether the label execs are not managing their artists properly, or if the artists themselves are the problem.

@@vlog_umentary5827 Well, Kendrick knows how to do it. He knows how/when to reward the wait with something worthwhile. The years after GKMC, we got TPAB and UU, along with a series of iconic live performances that we still watch till this day (eg. Fallon). DAMN. followed relatively soon enough. The years after DAMN., we get a DOUBLE album and an immediate international tour. When Kendrick is absent, he's absent. No games. No false promises (at least never directly from him - but, TDE). And when Kendrick is present, he's effectively everywhere. That's how you play the mystique/scarcity card.

*2012-2018* It's ever since the Championship Tour and Black Panther album that they started slowing down. 2015 had the best TDE album in TPAB. 2016's Blank Face LP by Q is legendary, prolly his best album. And the movie, soundtrack and Rock's album in 2018 kept things moving. But you can't really say much about the label after that. I think the Rona and 2020 hurt their progress honestly. TDE's makes their bankroll from concerts and I think projects were slated for that year along with tours that would follow. That year pushed everything back for the label including MM&BS which was supposed to be out in 2021.

2018 was such a good year for them too. The Championship Tour, Black Panther project, even the merch was some of the best in the hip-hop industry at the time. I remember constantly looking at their website, wanting all the hoodies and t-shirts. Kendrick was still very active at the time. Showed up to award shows, did magazine covers, all his songs playing everywhere. I remember everyone in school still singing Humble, DNA playing from cars and Loyalty playing in all the Foot Locker stores. SZA was also fresh off the Ctrl fame and success. A lot of girls in my school were listening to her. Good times

Yeah that doesn't say much. As someone said, he hasn't had featured artist from TDE since GKMC. But it's said they're always in the studio together whenever there's a project being worked on. That's especially the case with the main 4 members originally signed in the early 10's. Jay Rock, Q, Kendrick and Soul are a tight group. But just because you're label mates or best friends doesn't mean you have to be featured all the time.

This video/analysis is a fail, to be honest. Anyone who understands the music biz knows that groups, artists, etc... make the bulk of their money touring which is what they did especially for a group like TDE. Kendrick and Schoolboy Q had the most commercial success, but as a collective, their music was not going to reach commercial success - too grimey for radio. Dot jus got older (35) and it only makes business & creative since that he be more responsible for his vision. Keem & Mr.Morale are indicative of this. It’s all good. Remember Jay Rock was the act that launched TDE & Kendrick not the other way around. At the time (and still) non gangster rappers couldn’t come outta LA cuz our culture is 100% gangbangin; it took Jay rock from Bounty Huntas & Schoolboy from Hoover and Top Dog who I believe is a member from Compton inorder to launch a non affiliate like Kendrick. I love how many people in the comment section are defending the artists who release one album every 5 years. Y’all got some Stockholm Syndrome lol. The standard used to be an album every 2 years, and the product was more complete than it is now. Longer songs, fewer interludes, fewer skits, fewer features, harder music to learn and perform, etc. There’s no reason an absolute legend of an artist like Led Zeppelin or the Beatles were able to release an album *every year* for ten years straight yet new artists take 5 years to put out a shorter album that’s mostly features, samples, and 3 minute songs. Stop defending that lol smh.

True. But it's a different artist environment at TDE. A lot of the history's biggest artist all across all platforms had two things: 1) Ghost work 2) No internet I think those two right there would make a huge difference.

Q. Q's had the best albums of the label besides Kendrick's projects. Oxymoron and Blank Face LP are classics. Crash Talk wasn't as good but it was decent enough and that album really showcased his creative ability. He can carry the torch, pun intended. The guy is just always switching things up, changing his sound and he knows how to promote his album with great tours to follow up. I love Q. To me, it will be like when Michael Jordan left the Bulls initially. You might not have a championship squad anymore, but best believe Pippen gonna carry aha.

Meh. G-Unit ran the mid 2000’s but fell off after overexposure. The superstar stayed on deck but not the rest. Maybe the latter half of the 2010’s will be similar for TDE. Like, maybe they had their run, it was a good run, but the game (of rap) is always looking for the new big thing (who knows) after the reliable commodity (Kendrick). Fortunately unlike G Unit the original members have carved out their own unique sounds and fanbases separate from the big dog and I think they’ll always be able to do tours if not necessarily gigantic singles with Kanye etc (ie That Part)

The truth is simple. Kendrick is seen as the savior of hip hop leader of the new school and the voice of the west etc Who do you think helped to promote and market that understanding that became synonymous with him?? The label. That wasn’t always the case though. Initially it was black hippy as a collective and of course kemdrick was a shining star out the collective but he wasn’t necessarily the LEADER persay until gkmc dropped and the label started to double down on the notion that HE was the focal point of the entire label thus crippling the entire roster. Top dawg and punch and interscope made it so no one else on the label could coexist with him without being a Gladys knight and the pips situation. Plus if you add on the fact that they all work on their own time as artist, as the audience we are designed to look at them in comparison to Kendrick’s trajectory and not their own pace so if you put this all together the entire roster had to be sacrificed in order for Kendrick to become the artist that he’s seen as today.

"Pop a xanny, make your problems go away" - Stuck in the Mud Or even further back "So what you doin with you life nigga.. and i reply gettin high nigga" - Part II. My problem with TDE is that they think people are fans of the label and not individual artists. Like, I don't give a fuck about most of these dudes, I just want to listen 2-3 of them and as a fan I shouldn't have to wait for the whole roster to drop a project to listen to my artist. TDE tries to force the public to like their artists by controlling who we get to listen to and when. It's fucking annoying.
