The Suzuki DR650: When "Good Enough" Is "Too Good"

When you're a normal dude with a normal budget and you own a DR650, it's hard to buy a second bike.

I've owned over 20 bikes including some very exciting ones (like a Speed triple, monster 1100, super duke, fz09, etc), I've ridden sport bikes (Tuono, R1, S1000RR, GSX1000, etc...) and after losing my job I recently sold my Super Tenere and 91 Nighthawk to buy a used DR650 and I can't remember having this much fun on any bike (at least not without risking my life!). What an amazing, simple, fun machine. For those complaining about the weight, when you come off a 600lbs Super Tenere, this feels like it's 100lbs wet :)

@@randomlyTrees So if you have a GS, and a DR, seems like you need a trials bike and a Goldwing! Then you have it all covered. After a few years, I think the DR will be the only one left.... IMHO.

@davidfalgout7304 the DR is certainly my favorite and will always have a place in the stable. I’ve just done some long distance touring on it and found I could ride it more comfortably for longer periods of time than my GS, even on the interstate highways. The DR650 can do it all.

Spot on RT! Yes, the Mighty DR650 is an amazing bike that begs for mods to make it your own. It is simple to work on which makes the mod/ farkle process even more fun. I really enjoy the scenery out there in the PNW. I have been in the same situation you were talking about as far as getting another bike. Every time I start doing any analysis on what to get and why, I always come back to the DR. It doesn't excel at anything specific but good enough for everything. The options to "make it your own" are endless. Very profound video about the DR650! Cheers!

I hit two deer at 75 mph....bent my rim, smashed my Speedo, disintegrated the headlight....the bike slid down the asphalt and I wound up in the ICU then rehab.....got back home 5 weeks later and had my friend help me sit back in the saddle.....the bike cranked right up and purred like nothing happen....The DR650 is one tough asp bike

Hell yeah! It is a tank! Sorry to hear of your accident - hope you are either fully recovered or on the road to recover soon! Deer are plentiful where I live and it makes riding at dawn and dusk an adventure...which happens to be my commute times most of the year. I've had one jump out and run right along side me for about 30 yards. I swear I could have reached out to touch him. That was a "pucker" moment, for sure.

Im from a small town on the west coast of B.C called Powell River and the scenery is identical, a beautiful place to live with miles of logging roads that are open to the public, saving up to buy a DR650, will be my first ever bike and I think a good choice. Enjoyed the video

@@randomlyTrees I’m kind of stuck between deciding between the DR650 and the DRZ400 as my first bike. DRZ seems a little lighter for off roads like you are cruising down. Do you have any experience with the DRZ for comparison?

@@jsf8145 for 90% of the off pavement stuff I do, I think it’s a wash as far as which one is better. the DRZ is has a taller seat height and is about 50 lbs lighter. The stock suspension is better than stock on the DR650, but still not great. The DR650 is better at sustained freeway speeds, so that plus the shorter seat height are the most prominent benefits in the DR650’s favor. As you get into more technical stuff off pavement, the DRZ is considered better (especially when comparing both bikes in stock form). But if you’re a new rider and depending on how tall you are, the taller DRZ might not be better for you.

I too had thought about the vstrom 650,but I have added a few comfort mods to my dr and have done some long trips on it. Everytime I get on it ,it's like nope I'm keeping it. Great scenery 👌

Wow, this sounds like the thoughts that have been going through my head. Bought a 2013 new and over the years have struggled with the urges to "upgrade" to a v-strom 650 or 800 and most recently a Transalp. It would not be a financial hardship. I just absolutely cannot justify it in my head. I feel like I have so much more to do and learn on the DR. The "riding season" is opening up here and I'm more excited about getting the suspension and fuel tank upgrades finally and just riding and enjoying what I have and love!

I did end up buying a second bike not long after this video was published - the 2008 R1200 GS in some of my other videos. Really it fell into my lap by surprise and I couldn’t pass it up. However, after riding that halfway across the US and back, I find the DR650 to be my favored bike, even on long, multi-state pavement trips. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

The DR 650 is fine for long distance riding, many have been around the world never mind interstate, the trick is to use back roads and stay of highways, stick to 60mph roads and enjoy the scenery and the adventure, highway blasting is mind numbingly boring after a while, the journey is more important than the destination.

I am not in disagreement at all. For sure, the DR650 and many bikes have been rtw. It's not the bike that is the limiting factor, it's my body. I have ridden it hundreds of miles at a stretch, but multiple days of hundreds of miles on pavement are not in the cards for me. When I retire, I'll have more time to enjoy the back roads on a long journey, but until then there will be a time limit on long trips, and getting to an area I want to focus on riding in will sometimes involve multiple days on the interstate highways. The DR650 is certainly capable of that, but I want to be able to do it without being stove up afterward.

@@randomlyTrees I hear what your saying, I am 62 and don’t do big miles but I do live in Australia where if I wanted to go outback that is serious miles but the majority of good riding is only 100- 150 kilometres away. A bike that is not fatiguing to ride on the black stuff is not so good to ride on the dirt, and vice versa, the problem being the compromise you have to make, sadly that bike in the middle is just not there, a heavy bike has comfort and a light bike does not. I have a DR 650 and a Yamaha T7, the 40 Kg difference in weight makes me enjoy the DR more, no matter how good the T7 is, strangely I can do longer miles on my DR than I can on my T7, basically the ergonomics of the DR fit me better.

THE DR’s ergos fit me pretty well too. It’s a more comfortable position than my previous bike, and I haven’t changed much in that regard other than the seat. I’ve though about lowering the pegs to let my knees extend a bit when seated, so I may yet do that. I’m not tall enough for the stock position to feel cramped like some folks mention.

I really enjoy riding slow and soaking in the sights, smells, and just listening to the engine grunt along. Sometimes I’ll stop and just listen with the engine off (don’t usually show those parts). Going slow and quiet let’s you see more wildlife too, though most times that happens is when I’m riding with no camera (and not blabbing away at myself inside the helmet).

Trust me, from experience, if you like your DR650, just keep it. I had one back in '05 and ended up selling it after many years. I missed it terribly, and now I have another one, and will never sell it. They are really great bikes, and aftermarket support is really great too.

For sure! I’m not looking to get rid of the DR, just add to the stable. It is hard to justify though since the DR is so capable. But some longer, more road-focused trips I want to do would definitely be more suited to a different bike. Could the DR do them? Yes for sure. Could *I* do them on the DR? I’m not so sure.

I've got a dr650 and know what you mean. It's great on the dirt, but it's so much better on the road than I thought it would be. After getting an aftermarket seat I love taking it on long road trips.

It sure is. I’ve recently done a few multi-day pavement trips on mine, including several hundred mile stretches on freeways, and it was great. I was actually more comfortable on the DR than on my GS (mainly due to some ergonomic issues I’m having, not to detract at all from the GS). Thanks for watching and ride safe!

That’s a good distance. I think my longest has been between 350 and 400 miles (600km or so). The next day after that is where I run into trouble. If I tried that distance 2-3 days in a row, I’d be in a bad way.

3 of my motorcycles are legendary...'75 CB550SS, '99 VFR800, and '03 DR650. I have my DR set up for hard core adventure all moded up and regularly ride with the Euro brands. Then I swap on my street wheel set and cruise on the pavement all day at 75mph. Trust me, no matter how many bikes you have the DR will always get your attention. You hit the nail saying "Personality!"

That’s my feeling too. I’ll get a second bike eventually, but the ol’ DR is just too likeable to be replaced. I’ve built it up to what I want it to do, with more upgrades planned for it. I haven’t owned many bikes, but I can’t imagine not owning a DR650 now that I’ve had one.

I've made myself adopt "off pavement" as the normal term for where I usually ride after our conversations about that topic. We've been on some roads that are a bit less road than others, though. Definitely some grey area. V Strom 650 is in my future, I'm pretty sure. It will complement the DR650 well.

I have a 93 xj600 (sport touring) bike i put shinko 705 tires on. I've done roads that turned to wash outs, snow, ect. I think it comes down to the right tires, a bike your comfortable on and a willingness to take it places it probably shouldn't be. ( experience helps also)Lol I also have a dr650 now. But have 15k of memories on the seca and probably will never sell it.

I just picked up a 2022 KLR mostly because the amount of pavement riding I have to do to get to and from the off pavement riding areas including the Oly Pen area. If I lived in an area of more/mostly or tougher dirt the DR would be top of list.

I went from a CRF250L to a DR650 for that reason. I have to ride a ways to get to the off pavement places I like to ride. The CRF250L could do it--and did do it--but the longer distance destinations were made longer if I wanted to stay off the busy interstate highways. The DR650 is much more comfortable at those speeds on pavement, not to mention it has some extra to give when I need it. The KLR is definitely more road capable, so I imagine it is very comfortable at those speeds. That's another great bike, in my opinion.

I'm still trying to figure this out and wish I'd never heard about the DR. I was all set to buy a new lime green base KLR but finding out that the DR is lighter and has more ground clearance has me thinking, white or black. Riding area to start is in Idaho. Trying to figure the dividing line for rider size as I know the KLR is better for tall people but at 6'2" with an inseam of 32", am I tall or what? What is a good rider size for the DR? I punch the scale at 280, still not sure how the DR would handle my greatness. LOL. EFI and ABS vs old school simplicity/ruggedness. I have other bikes for on-road stuff but none are what you'd call fast in the corners. My 2020 Road Glide Limited with the 131ci kit pushes my buttons for cornering at speeds I'm comfortable doing. Some aren't happy at 3 times the posted speed limit, I'm in my happy place pushing it at 2x. 132whp/144tq and she brings a smile to my face. Anyway, I know I could buy a used DR or KLR but the price difference between used and new in this economy means I'll just buy new. White, black or green? Reward for working overseas so long. Tell me Mr. Wizard, I'm so cornfused.

​@6806goats1 I'm 5'10 with a 32" inseam, and have a DR. Used to have a KLR. You will have to spend some money on the DR to get it set up for you and what you plan to do with it. At minimum you will need to do bars and/or risers if you plan on ever standing up when you ride. I'd plan on lowering the pegs too. You'd probably have to do the same with a KLR. At the end of the day, the DR is a big dirt bike/dual sport. The KLR is an ADV bike. Sadly, the KLR is less expensive new or used. I will say the KLR has better suspension off the showroom floor, which makes no sense considering the DR is supposed to be the more dirt oriented bike.

I’ve owned two Vstrom 650’s rode them the same way I ride the DR 650 (apologize exception is 2 up) as well 1 Vstrom 1000 (2016). Bets part about DR650 is that when the off road become 2 or 1 track I still feel happy on the DR 650. Have ridden all on single track through creeks etc. DR 650 reminds me of my DR 400s but comfortable doing 65-70 to get to the fun spots. Did the TAT on the DR 400.

The big reason for a 2nd bike is for something completely different. For example, I'm thinking of going the other way. I have an older model Vstrom 1000. It is a highway queen, that massive weight making it rock solid in the wind, at prairie speeds. But I'm thinking of a DR650 (or crf/klx 250/300) as a 2nd bike that would be more appropriate for a no-skill desk jockey to play around on the eastern slopes of the Rockies. If you can afford it.

The DR definitely wins the smiles per dollar contest! Like a commenter below, I come from the background of owning some really nice sport bikes, GP bike, cruisers and Sport Touring. I just bought a new DR 650 and am kicking myself for not getting one much sooner! I have a feeling my other bikes are going to be feeling pretty lonely for awhile? I personally wouldn’t sell yours for a V Strom. As you go deeper off road you’re going to eventually run into some rougher terrain and you’ll wish you were on the DR. It only takes one bad fall, way out from civilization and you’re in a tough position.

The V Strom would have been an addition to the garage, not a replacement. Later, I ended up buying a used R1200 GS - I wasn’t looking at them at all but couldn’t pass up the deal. The GS has been my longer distance road bike, but it can’t take the place of the DR. I’m thinking of the DR whenever I’m not riding it. Whether I’m sitting at my desk, driving the car, or riding another bike, the DR is on my mind. It’s hard not to love it.

@@randomlyTrees They need to be ridden aggressively. Motor is noisy. Front brake rotors pulsate at 3000 miles, a known issue. I have a KTM 250 XCW and a 450 EXC and love them. I'm definitely not a KTM hater. Thinking a new V Strom or Triumph Tiger.

I feel like you'd need to do one longer trip (with an upgraded seat of course) before you buy another bike. Just my opinion but maybe it'll be just fine. With so many out there doing RTW trips on DR's (piki piki etc), I think with the mods everyone does you can make it very capable. That said, im sure i'll eventually try something else one day too.

Sure, but on a RTW trip you’ll be pretty much on one bike. No doubt the DR650 is a great choice due to versatility, but so are many other bikes. People do RTW on anything from a big BMW GS to a Honda CRF250L. Some that shine on the longer stretches of paved roads, some that shine on the off pavement parts. I’ve got an upgraded seat already, it makes a world of difference. But a long stretch of highway, to include highway traffic around cities, is by no means comfortable after 4-6 hours in the saddle. There are other factors too (2up riding with my wife for example). Definitely not looking to be rid of the DR, just general conversation about how hard it is to justify a second bike for valid reasons when the DR is such a great platform to build on.

They are a great, only thing that let's them down is the small 13 l fuel tank, why they didn't change this year's ago I don't know l, I always Carry at least 5 l fuel spare. I only get about 15 km per liter, what do you get,as I don't ride to hard,but give some,stick too, especially on highway,trail,city. Cheers

I agree, the stock tank is much too small. I’ve put a 5.3 gallon (20 L) on mine and that gives me about 230 mile (370 k). Fuel economy for me can be between 40 and 45 mpg (17 - 20 km per l). If I ride long freeway miles I can get 51 mph (just over 21.5 km per liter). I don’t usually ride too hard either, but I am also on mostly stock carburetor jetting. I only changed the needle and the idle fuel mixture

The only better bike for backcountry is the dr350. I miss my dr650 for the roads, but the dr350 is world's better off road. Much better gearing, and plenty of power. That's not to say the dr650 is still freaking awesome.

A friend of mine used to have a DL650 (Vstrom). It was a '13 model, very nice blue color. I rode it a few times on the street and yes, it was comfortable, and powerful. I think he should keep the DR650 and buy a Vstrom also. But, a DR650 is perfectly capable of around the world traveling and a lot of people use them for that. So it's not necessary to have a Vstrom for long distance travel. I even watch videos of a woman who rides a CRF300 Rally all over the world and it does just fine, just a little anemic on power maybe.

People ride all over the world on cheap 150cc bikes, i think americans are spoiled over all of the great options they have available, but you can do around the world tours with pretty much any bike

Hey there, thank you! This is Rocky Brook Rd. which is off highway 101 on the Olympic Peninsula. It cuts through a bit of the Olympic National Forest between Brinnon and Quilcene, WA. It’s a relaxing ride with some cool offshoots to explore, some more difficult than others.

Beautiful area to ride. I too see you not "needing" the DR650 if you had a VStrom 650 available to you. They really are a great bike capable of most of what you like to do. Have you considered getting a set of Warp 9 wheels and putting some 50/50 tires on for when you want to travel father? Doc650 has a great video on that option. Of course you would want a screen solution and I recall the videos showing that to an issue! - Frank

The WeeStrom is a very capable bike. The problem is, the steering angle is too steep and tucks when off road and a nightmare in soft stuff. I wish Honda would just release the Transalp already...If not I feel a base Africa Twin in my future. If there were a replacement for the DR, it might just be the Husqvarna FE501.

I’ve considered a lot of things. Lots of great videos from the community and friends. The comfort level on multi day long rides is what is most in my mind. For example, if I had ridden the DR out to join you guys on the Black Hills trip, I don’t think I’d have been able to sit down or walk when I got there lol. Still wish I could have made it though!

I think we can thank Suzuki’s poor financial state for the continuation of the DR. There must be huge warehouses in Japan full of them. Seriously, after owing 3 of them I think they are the best inexpensive trail bike of recent times. After a lifetime of riding dirt bikes, I felt that the DR had the worst standard suspension of any bike and if you don’t fix it, you will go over the bars when the forks bottom out.

Suspension is my next (potentially last - nah, who am I kidding?) upgrade. I’ve never ridden a bike with good suspension, so I don’t know what I’m missing. It does like to bottom out though, even when riding at moderate speed.

@@randomlyTrees The easiest thing to sort the forks out is to fit the Full Force Racing Components (Brisbane Australia) Plex valve. I simply installed it in my forks with a spacer and it transformed the forks from life threatening to potentially life saving. They will never be as good as say the forks in a KTM 500/690 but it does the job. The rear shock needs revalving and a stiffer spring.

I regret getting rid of my DR650 a decade ago. Right now, I'm trying out a crf300l and if it doesn't work out I'm going back to the DR, end of story. They're just too versatile.

CRF300L is a great bike in its own right. I had the 250L before I got the DR650 and it was rock solid reliable the whole time I had it 32,000 miles. Whichever you end up with, enjoy and ride safe!

Both are great. The CRF250L is more refined, both have similar limitations off road in stock form. The biggest difference for me is the ability to sustain freeway speeds for long periods, so the DR650 was the better choice. I do miss my 250L though.

This is Rocky Brook Road on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. It is a great place to ride! The whole area has very scenic and forested roads like this through the Olympic National Forest. It’s the closest area for me to get off pavement and I love it!

I really like the CB500X (2019 and newer is the 19" front wheel). Whatever the second bike is, I am hoping to do some 2 up riding with my wife, and I don't think the CB500X would go the distances that I hope to go. Otherwise, it really would be a serious consideration, and I likely would have bought one already :)

@@randomlyTrees used is the way to go. You lose so much less money when you sell. I think of it as my rental fee. I sold my 2 bikes to buy the KLR because I was worried about supply chain issues. Otherwise I'd have waited a year or so.

I guess your comment is about me talking about getting acclimated to the climate here? 1200’ elevation on a “warm” day isn’t really a high elevation. It was 50 degrees F…where I spent most of my life, 50 degrees is warm in the Spring. After a winter in the 20’s and 30’s, a 50 degree day is shorts and t-shirt weather. So I’m either getting acclimated to the lesser extreme temps in the PNW, or I’m getting old (or both, most likely). If I’m off base, let me know! Ride safe.

@@richardvalitalo3670 I gotcha. It was, in a sense. The bottom is just above sea level. Where I was above the clouds was around 1800 - 2000 feet. There is a lot of water nearby so very pretty low hanging clouds and fog to get above without having to go really high. In the middle of winter it definitely stays cold up there.

@@randomlyTrees so did you get a 2nd bike? I have a DR650 and my 2nd bike is a 4 wheel Suzuki atv 400. The seat is a lot better and I can ride it in some snow. It will pull a small trailer and has 4 wd and low range, high range and reverse.

I'm just too paranoid of wrecking a GS with more intense off-road riding like one of the BDR's. 1250 GSA is the dream bike....anyone wanna buy a low mileage 2004 Honda Rune at a incredibly high price? I'll get there some day.

Had a vstrom 650, now have a vstrom 1000 and a DR650. I almost exclusively ride the DR. I don't know why. I prefer the Strom 650 over the 1000 mainly because it handles better and is not a slouch in the power department compared to the 1000. Much more comfy and handles the twisties better than the DR. I think that would change if I had street tires and maybe a 19" front on the DR. Still, I like riding the DR better. Maybe it's because I can pick it up if I drop it. Maybe it's the thumper (though I like the V twin power). Oh, by the way, I also have a KTM 525, a Yamaha 426, and a Yamaha 250 two stroke. The DR is still my favorite to ride. Can't figure out why. LOL

I’ve unfortunately had no experience on other types of bikes - only thumpers. I think that’s another part of why it’s hard for me to pull the trigger on buying a second bike. I don’t know what I’m missing 😂 But there is something real and raw about the DR that wasn’t in the other thumpers I’ve ridden, and I’m sure I would be missing that part of it on any other bike
