People give season 1 way too little credit. Yes it’s slower than season 2 & 3, but it does an amazing job of introducing the characters and making us care about all of them. And that connection is what the later seasons build on. Also it gave us cabbage guy.

your impressions are top tier as always sean 😂😂. i’ve always loved this episode, it has some great lessons. huu’s little speech about the world being connected although folks act as if we aren’t has always stuck with me. it’s seems like such a simple statement but humanity still has trouble with it which is a shame. glad i learned it early on. *steps off of soap box* can’t wait for episode 5! it could be considered filler but i think it has some great moments!

YES. the notification for this upload made my day :,) personally, as a kid, i never even thought about the swamp waterbenders as being any...dumber or less-than the other cultures. i always just assumed they were isolated from the war and the four nations, so they had a much more lighthearted/uncomplicated lifestyle as a result. like, their problems are more immediate and singular since they are so far removed from the war, so as a kid (and carried into adulthood) i just thought it made sense for them to be less uptight and/or socially by the book? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don't know about official lore, but if I had to guess since the swamp is so dang old, the water tribes are actually offshoots of the hillbillies and not the other way around. But it would be cool lore to see explored.

Nothing official, but considering that the Swamp is at midway between the North and South, so it can be assumed that the Swamp waterbenders are the ancestral stock. Some traveled North, some South, some stayed.

If I have guess, humanity originated somewhere on the earth kingdom continent. Because earth bending is so strong on land they eventually kick out the other 3 bending peoples, that's why the other 3 are on islands since earthbending is useless on the open sea. BTW the 4 nations weren't always there, in the kyoshi novels they were said to be only about 4 thousands years old in Avatar Kyoshi's time. So that kinda supports my theory of the ancient past being a more violent place

Well you know by know that this show is actually very important. People often call episodes filler because they a. don't know what that means, and b. they just don't see yet the piece of the puzzle that was given. It's always foreshadowing or setting up something for later. Here for the third time we have set up for Aang and his spirit world connection and he's given the key info he needed to find Toph. If he hadn't had that clue he wouldn't have found her.
