Carl XVI Gustaf was king since three years when he married. So Silvia went from commoner straight to queen consort.

Why is his name ordered the way it is? Carl XVI Gustaf? Is the Gustaf not his middle name? Confused American here!

@@melindaflick631 His name is Carl Gustaf so I guess his wife and friends call him that when they are private. In Sweden we have had a monarchy since the 970s and the current king is the 16th (XVI) king whose first name is Carl. It is not entirely correct, however, it became wrong in the 16th century when Carl IX (9th) was crowned because at that time it was not really known how many kings with the name Carl had existed in reality. In the recorded history that they then had access to had they mixed some fiction with the reality. But from Carl IX the account is correct. After him and before the current one, we have thus had six kings with the name Carl as their first name. We have also had six who had Gustav as their first name (the last one was the present kings grandfather Gustav VI Adolf), two Oscar, one Fredrik, one Adolf, several Erik, Johan and others in the very early years. As well as two female regents: Kristina (1632-54) and Ulrika Eleonora (1718-20).

@@AnnaLenaGbg - I guess I was poorly asking why it's ordered Carl XVI Gustaf, rather than Carl Gustaf XVI.

@@melindaflick631 Ok. He is the 16th king to have the name Carl as THE FIRST name. We haven't had 16 kings named Carl Gustaf. The former Carl (XV, regent 1859-72) was named Carl Ludvig Eugen but was called just Carl by his parents, wife and friends. His official name was just Carl XV (or rather Karl XV cause he used the Swedish spelling). The fact that the current king also has Gustaf in his official title - Carl XVI Gustaf - is therefore due to the fact that it is the name his family and friends call him Carl Gustaf, not just Carl nor Carl Gustaf Folke Hubertus Bernadotte ( wich are all his names).🙂
