As a Protestant who is seriously considering Catholicism, what are faithful Catholics to do? If a Catholic is required to obey the Pope as authority as part of commitment to The Church, how can we make that profession and still be faithful to the Lord?

@@rdnugent1 you only have this problem IF you believe Francis is Pope. Read about the 1961-1965 Garabandal apparitions of Mary. The Garabandal Seer Conchita Gonzalez said in 1963 upon the Death of Pope John XX111 that Mother Mary told her there would only be 4 more Popes after Pope John. Francis is the 5th since that statement. Therefore Francis is not Pope and he can be safely ignored. "Dominus Vobiscum"

I've lost most of my friends to the issues of disordered sexual temptations, some of which I consider my best friends (though we don't talk anymore, or they don't talk to me rather). I hope that one day the Holy Spirit will overwhelm them with grace so that they open their eyes to the madness of today's trends (nothing new or progressive in human's history).

@@estebangonzalez8096 I feel for you and I admire your devotion to the Lord. I do think it’s possible to seek and find the fellowship of others who have arrived at a similar devotion in their own lives, though, and to derive sustenance and comfort from that fellowship. I have heard that members of the apostolate Courage*, after having embraced the Church’s teachings on chastity, often find themselves in great need of friendship and support from people who “get them”. It was for this reason that the group Encourage was founded. I’m going to contact Encourage to find out if there are opportunities to connect with people locally. I wonder if you’d have any interest in trying something like that? Just a thought. By the way, if anyone reading this has not seen the documentary “Desire of the Everlasting Hills” and the film “The Third Way: Homosexuality and the Catholic Church” (both on KZbin still, I believe) I would reeeally encourage him or her to watch these as they are beautifully done and very moving. *Courage, Intl. is a Catholic apostolate for people who live with same-sex attraction but who endeavor to live chaste lives according to Christ’s teaching. It was because of the awesome witness of men and women in Courage that I finally opened my mind to the Church’s teaching on sexual morality after many years of rejecting it. Please pray for the members and leaders of Courage and try to help them in any way you can.

It doesn’t mean you’re a horrible rotten human for feeling lgbtq it just means we each get to make choices and we can choose to follow Christ. We can choose our destiney he has created for us instead of abandoning our purpose to follow feelings and desires.

To answer Matt's question: I'm a 26 yo cradle catholic. I skipped Sunday mass probably less than 10 times in my whole life. I grew up in a rural part of France and until moving to a larger city, where I eventually found out about the TLM, I had never heard any homely about hell. Nor have I heared a priest speak about mortal sin and its consequences. Isn't it incredibly sad? I've been practicing my faith for a quarter of a century, and live in France, the eldest daughter of the Church. I owe my faith to my parents, especially my mum, who made sure we prayed every day, often saying a rosary. Nowadays, thanks to the internet, I do have access to some interesting Catholic content, which helps me learn more about our faith. At the moment, I live in Luxembourg, cardinal Hollerich's (the head of the synod) archdiocese. It's even WORSE than France. Even at the TLM parish in the capital city, less than 20 people attend Sunday mass. In ordinary parishes, churches here are less than 30% full on SUNDAYS. In France, in the TLM parish I went to before moving here, you had to be at church at least 15 min before mass started if you wanted to find a seat - otherwise it's too full. There's so much to be said about European bishops. Most of them are either liberals, or too scared to speak up against what's going on. Their policy is that no news from the Church is good news. The less you hear about Her, the better. The sex scandals have traumatised them, unfortunately. My previous bishop, God have mercy on him, forbade the priests from wearing a cassock, which he considered too visible...

Yes the sex scandal was bad but the church could have recovered by dealing with the perpetrators in a strict way. Instead, they " forgave" and moved them on to new parishes. Plus the assualts on nuns. I think what REALLY moved people away from the church was how these actions were handled. That is what people can't forgive. Yes everywhere there will be predators on the weak, but once they are found out, they should be made an example of so it does not happen again and puts the fear of God into any intending perpetrators. That never happened and it just gave a green light to them. Hence further abominations have crept into the church. God will deal with these bad shepherds very severely but he will not allow his church to fail.

If I had to label myself, I would say I am a Novus Ordo guy. I respect Tridentine and Byzantine 100%. And I love your suggestion at 54:54. There is a priest who celebrates the Novus at a parish in the Greater Boston area, and he has incorporated the Altar rail into the Liturgy and really does have a profound affect on the reverence of the Mass and Eucharist. Several priests in the Boston area also include a little bit of Latin Gregorian Chant during the Novus Ordo, and that is quite beautiful. as well. I appreciate the charity backed criticisms in this discussion with Ralph. He is careful with the way he expresses his concern and I find that to be very helpful. Keep up the good work PWA. I love the Church and have been concerned about the output from Rome recently. As a 23 year old who only started practicing about 5 years ago Pope Francis is all I’ve ever known. Confusion is all I’ve ever known. Would be nice to have a JP2/Ratzinger type back in the Vatican. There also seems to be an argument between the Michael Lofton types (derogatorily called “popesplainers”) and I suppose the “rad Trads”. I’ve watched a lot of Lofton lately, but I also have exposure to many voices who are more critical of the pope. I think Erik Ybarra, Ralph Martin, and to an extent Matt Fradd fall under that “more critical” category to varying degrees (Martin seems to be the most critical out of the three I mentioned). Personally I just can’t fully buy what Lofton is selling. He not only defends the pope against heresy (which I wholeheartedly agree with, he has not spouted heresy up to this point as many “rad trad” types have said) but he actually praises the pope and cardinal Fernandez for their clarity. I just don’t see that. I read the latest Dubia, I get that they didn’t change doctrine (Lofton has helped me see that), but it just seems like everything Pope Francis does is him trying extra hard to toe the line and push Catholicism to it’s progressive limits without actually changing doctrine. This is just not the correct mindset to have in this day and age. We need to be rooted firmly in Christ, not trying to push the limits of orthodoxy. The reality is, that though the Pope is not leading the Church into heresy, he is leading it into ambiguity. He is “making a mess” as he said himself.

I listen to Lofton as well, but I don't see the Pope as pushing the church into a progressive church. I see him trying to open the church up to sinners like LGBT+ so that they may be transformed. And a lot of these Rad Trads and such are more like the Pharisees who are calling out Jesus for eating with sinners, adulterers and tax collectors. But when I read Pope Francis, it sounds like to me he truly believes the sacraments will help heal these broken people who are the LGBT group. And it has helped heal me as well. In the other side he is also battling the progressives as well. So we have schismatics with the Rad Trads and the Progressives. But like Jesus we need to "desire mercy not sacrifice." It's a difficult spot to be in. And remember that the Pope is just a man. He is not perfect. And he is not Jesus. But he was put into place by the Holy Spirit in the place of Christ. I think prayer instead of dissension is best. The Rad Trads and the Progressives are taking the route of Martin Luther. And I would say that there are plenty of Protestant churches.

I read the dubia too and honestly I came to the conclusion that Pope Francis has been pretty clear, and keep getting hit with “rare case” questions that he tried to answer tactfully. Granted the Pope isn’t perfect, but he is really far more direct and straightforward than people give him any credit for. He’s also a pretty conservative pontiff who has spoken out more directly and even graphically against things like abortion, same sex “marriage,” and transgenderism than any of his predecessors. So in short, it really seems like Lofton’s views are accurate. I’ve come around to understanding and agreeing hi as a sensible middle ground voice of reason, rather than as a member of a polarized “side” pushing an agenda.

It's frustrating for sure. But ....before I had an encounter with Jesus I would've been a worldly Catholic. Going in at behaviour won't attract people. Going in with identity, belonging etc leads to conversion/ encounter/receiving the Holy Spirit and then formation leads towards behaviour. I haven't met anyone that truly received the Holy Spirit that believes certain things are ok that we know are not. Some leaders in the church need to be led to a true encounter ❤ Much prayer and surrender needed. Lord have mercy on us all 🙏

Love your comment. Leaders (everyone for that matter) need a true encounter. I have a clear memory from high school, during a Sunday homily, the priest said that being a Catholic means believing in everything that the church teaches and not simply picking the things we like and ignoring the things we don’t like. I couldn’t wrap my head around this. It seemed almost impossible to me back then that anyone would actually believe wholeheartedly in the Catechism. As a teen, I bought the whole leftist ideals. Fast forward about 10-15 years, Jesus has revealed himself to me, and I absolutely agree with you… anyone who has a true encounter with the Holy Spirit would see the truth in the Catholic Church and behaviour would form accordingly. Thank God that He straightened my path. Praying that everyone has the same encounter.

57:07 I'm a parish point person for the Eucharistic Revival in my archdiocese. We had a presentation where the presenter, from Notte Dame and wrote a lot of the copy for the kickoff videos, talked about reverence. The definition became reverence is however and whatever you want it to be. I spoke out out against that and said no. The director of evangelization basically chewed me out for calling out this prestigious doctor who gave up his time to talk to us. I was flabbergasted. Reverence isn't how you feel it's how you're to worship. Man, I was neverso taken aback.

Have I heard a homily on, "Save yourself from this wicked generation." No. Have I preached about it? I'm not sure, but I did write something about it once. When I was in seminary we had so many talks about priests talking across generations and getting along. This amounted to how do we get the young cassock wearing priests to get with the program. (This was all still in the Pope Benedict days). I wrote an essay about real unity in the priesthood comes from God the Holy Spirit, not from endless meetings, barbecues or even saying the same words. If we had real unity in the Holy Spirit then priests (and laity for that matter) could disagree strongly and still share their faith in God. I wrote in my essay that to seek unity apart from God is to preach another gospel. I could not have imagined then how much 'preaching another gospel' in favor of 'unity', and 'journeying' would return. I think I need to lookup my essay and rewrite it for today.

Re " get over the shame of the Gospel" : evangelicals are decades ahead on this issue. It seems to me that most of the serious and seasoned evangelical "foot soldiers" has already struggled with this and answered that question for themselves. Flirting with the world doesn't work. Disclosure: I am a new Eastern Orthodox with decades history of Evangelical church going. Converted to Jesus from atheism just reading the Gospel, and spent years of just reading the Word before He brought me to the Church. I would not deny any bit of my journey with Christ, and am grateful for the patience with which He introduced the moral argument to me persistently, over time. When I finally heard Him there was no more cutting me any slacks, no more baby formula. It was terrifying, painful, but liberating. Now it grieves me to hear of the painful confusion in The Catholic Church, I so love your beautiful tradition and all the faithful. Praying. Please pray for us as well, all The Body of Christ is facing trials. ❤ Love

This interview was extremely helpful. Pints has played a MAJOR role in my conversion to Christianity. Still trying to discern between becoming Catholic vs becoming Eastern Orthodox. It’s been really hard feeling stuck between the two faiths and two communities. Orthodoxy definitely does a better job of sticking to the traditional teachings in a unified way. But it also feels rigid and insular. For now I will keep praying and keep showing up in both communities

I was in religious life for 7 years and that was a legitimate fear when Pope Francis was elected. He could have easily shut down the religious order. I think there are a bunch of unfounded accusations here. For example if you need to repent of your sins to get baptized normally then. "...under they same conditions as other believers..." already covers that. Also Fernandez has been abundantly clear that we can't bless a homosexual union but we can bless persons that are in such a union because we can bless anyone. A bunch of things like that... I'm glad Matt keeps asking the right questions.

Watching this video everything that Ralph Martin says sounds spot on, especially about the confusion coming from Rome. That said, there are other KZbinrs out there that would have me believe that everything is just one gigantic misunderstanding, and that these bishops, cardinals, and priests who criticize Rome are just misinformed and simply misunderstand Pope Francis. They also parse every word he says, and show how technically nothing is being changed. My heart tells me that something has changed, but why doesn't anyone address the arguments being made by these who profess to be conservative Catholics and still defend what is coming from Rome? That would be very helpful. For instance, I just heard an apologist say that it is not true that baptism of trans individuals doesn't require repentance. So, who is right about this?

So you can judge what's in the heart of the pope, regard him with evil suspicion (a sin), and admit to willfully disregarding the virtue of charity? That's a really bad start to fighting for the Church. It's worse on a channel named after St. Thomas Aquinas since he specifically warns against that: "In these words (Matthew 7:1) our Lord forbids rash judgment which is about the inward intention, or other uncertain things, as Augustine states… Or again according to Chrysostom, He forbids the judgment which proceeds not from benevolence but from bitterness of heart. Additionally, I could take exception to your judgment of me as if my concern is from bitterness of heart. The Lord said the road to perdition is wide and many will follow it. I think Dr. Martin's presentation of the Dubia response is leading, the documents clearly state that people of these sexual disorders must be baptized 'in the same way as other believers' part of the confession before baptism is the Renunciation of Satan and all his evil ways, there is no way that is possible to actually know someone's intention, and the Baptism itself is administered by the Holy Spirit, through the priest acting 'in personam Christi' if we seriously believe the Holy Spirit is so weak, as to not be able to stop someone who may not be 100% fully committed to the ideals of the Church, then I might as well go back to Atheism, as I was suffering Scrupulousity and self-hatred before and after my baptism. 'Even if [the Pope an incarnate devil], we ought not to raise up our heads against him, but calmly lie down to rest on his bosom... He who rebels against our Father is condemned to death, for that which we do to him we do to Christ: we honor Christ if we honor the Pope; we dishonor Christ if we dishonor the Pope. I know very well that many defend themselves by boasting: 'They are so corrupt, and work all manner of evil!' But God has commanded that, even if the priests, the pastors, and Christ-on-earth were incarnate devils, we be obedient and subject to them, not for their sakes, but for the sake of God, and out of obedience to Him' -St. Catherine of Siena, Doctor of the Church, who lived through the AVIGNON PAPACY, definitely a far worse time than now.

What the Pope’s document sounds like is something I experienced in the 90’s called “consensus decision making.” It was billed as a “bottom up” process that made everyone feel heard, at least until they realized that someone’s value system and assumptions had been predetermined . And that value system was pre-chosen. Eventually people realized that the results, too, had been pre-chosen, and the whole process was an empty exercise.

The Holy Father really is ambitious on a lot of points, BUT the American culture wars has infected all other western countries, and tbh the "culture war" mind set is not good for thinking clearly and calmly.

@@giulianobrugellis1614 Political conservatives have a tendency to idolize people who say things they agree with. In my opinion, I've noticed political conservatives become more aggressive, worrisome, and afraid whenever elections don't go their way or whenever a non-conservative is President. Sadly, American obsession with politics infiltrates the life of the Church.

I wonder how much the psychological phenomenon of denial is preventing Catholics from seeing what’s right in front of them.

at 33:50 "so it is that bad, and yet you are still here. Why?" I'll use the boat analogy. Extra Ecclesiam Nula Salus says that, regardless of the state of the Church, we cannot leave the boat. The seas are really rough, and if you go Protestant, christian cult, or even possibly Orthodox, that without "the captain," boat is eventually going to sink. So we can go up to the quarter-deck and tell the captain that he needs to change course, but we gotta go with him cause we're in the same boat!

For those who have doubts keep in mind that it’s not quite fair to compare any other form of Christianity to the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church is basically mainstream Christianity and home to around 55% of Christendom spread across the world touching many cultures through the Latin Church. Let’s compare that with the Orthodox churches who are home to around 10% of Christendom most of which live in Russia and Eastern Europe. Catholics in the US number around ~60,000,000…compared to the the varieties of Orthodox in the US who all together only number around ~700,000. You could say Catholicism is in a crisis because it has made such an impact and is so involved with our changing world. The experimental project triggered by V2 is a project of progressives in the Latin Church to rebrand our Latin Church into an ex-Tridentine de-Latinized “World Church” open to promoting programmatic inculturation and accommodation - with Protestants, non-western nations, and “modern man”. This has not been as success. Progressives think this is what needs to be done, and we should trust the process… “Trads” are basically just Catholics of the Latin Church (98% of Catholics) who want to caution against the experimental overhaul and restore our Latin patrimony (Ratzinger). This kind of battle between trads and progressives is an unresolved identity crisis in the Latin Church. And the papacy of Francis has kind of instigated this old disagreement and re-empowered the dying progressive voice in the church.. so for Trads it can feel like a hard fight, and an uphill battle these days… but it’s a battle worth fighting. Catholics who become disenchanted and look to “the East” are presented with a seeming “oasis” but they should keep in mind that “the East” doesn’t have our struggle because they are not our size and haven’t walked in our shoes. Eastern Christianity is a small hipster niche brand of Christianity… a bubble of religious escapism. The Latin Church has had many problems in the past but she will also have greater glory in the future. But we cannot flee just because we want to escape the tensions leaking in from clown world. This is our problem, our responsibility, and God will turn this ship around. The survival of Christian civilization depends on the fight at the center of the Catholic Church.

Best analysis of the cultural condition of the Church I've heard! What I'm observing is there is a lot of talk about "accepting Vatican II", but if you've actually read the documents, as I have, you might notice that all the novelties pouring forth from the Vatican are in direct opposition to the council.

You Matt, in your strong desire to be fair are ignoring the years of these misunderstandings. Like a moth... stick to that bright light until it fries you... maybe my years as a cop and soldier have hardened me, but I can spot a con... these word games are a con. Your not helping.

I don’t understand what we don’t have a person that comes on this podcast to talk more about theory of liberation! Many of the people that are currently on synod are party of this movement that continues to bring confusion ! Bernardo Kuster would be a great option to come to speak on liberation theory on Pins with Aquinos !

“You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit that befits repentance, and do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father’; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire." Matthew 3.7-10
