The problem is that the media have REFUSED to tell us the true history of the region - that this is a religio-ethnic conflict that no amount of Western troops can sort out. Hello Simon, I am a Syrian Christian who fled to the United States in 2013 after AlNusra and Al Farouk Brigades launched an offensive against the Christians of the city of Homs on February 2nd, 2012, where many of my friends and family members were killed by the rebels and the government forces. To this day I believe that there was not a sufficient media coverage of the atrocities that the Syrian government, the FSA, ISIS, AlNusra and other factions committed against the Christian minority in Syria which used to comprise 10% of the population in 2010 and has been decimated to less than 2% today. Can you please cover that story and I am willing to provide details and supporting documents if needed.

I worked with a Syrian refugee in construction in europe. Not only was he one of the kindest and hard working people I've met, he also was so good at woodworking. He showed me pictures of the most beautiful kitchen I've seen he had built in his home in Syria. Most refugees Ive met in construction are such good people. The language barrier and messing around in 3 languages with eachother trying to find the best way to say something always feels so human

I have witnessed the development of the Syrian crisis since its beginning, and it is unfortunate to see that after 12 years of conflict, the victim of this crisis has always been the Syrian people who gained nothing but suffering and misery. Almost six million fled the country - the majority of which are refugees, and around five million inside Syria are either displaced or returnees who need urgent humanitarian aid. Although Syria has been in a kind of phony war for three years now, it has not managed to start its recovery. The failing economy has resulted in 80% of the population living under the poverty line. I was born in the US and I lived in Syria for nearly 13 years. I remember it was so nice, never imagined that I would leave the country. The people were nice and the food was amazing. People got along despite their differences. Syrian ppl only asked for freedom and it turned to a huge disaster. Syria became a playing field for all the countries to fight from the Russian to the Americans and Iran and all kinda groups of rebels and you got Israel dropping bombs here and there. Even if the Assaad regime is gone, it won’t fix the issue unfortunately. It is a big chaos and the Syrian people are victims of this mess. There is a fantastic documentary called Once Upon a Time in Iraq. It consists of interviews of journalists, civilians, and soldiers who were on the ground at the time. The first two episodes focus on the invasion, but the last two focus on the Islamic state occupation of Mosul. It is a brilliant piece of film, fascinating and highly provocative. If you enjoyed this video, I would highly recommend that documentary. There's even an interview with one of the MP's who had to mind Saddam hussein, it's brilliant.

I think one needs to look deeper into the ethnoreligious demographics of Syria in order to understand how the war became the way it is now. Assad's family as said before is from an Alawite minority, a sect that did indeed originate from Shi'a Islam but certainly doesn't resemble Muslims in any way: they don't pray 5 times a day, they're allowed to drink alcohol and you would hardly find an Alawite woman wearing a hijab. One needs to visit coastal areas of Syria where most Alawites live that certainly don't resemble what most Westerners imagine the Middle East looks like. Bashar al-Assad's main support base lies in religious minorities of Syria, namely Alawites like himself, Christians (approx. 10%), Twelver and Ismaili Shias and Druze (although I'm not sure about the latter one as there are recent protests in Sweida province against Assad) who fear the Sunni-dominant rule in Syria could lead their rights taken away and eventually turn into a theocracy (although some urban Sunni Arabs support the government, especially the merchant class of Damascus). It is funny though that theocratic Iran helped the Syrian secular government to stay in power while fighting against mainly Sunni Islamist rebels: shows how much their slogans of Muslim unity and export of the Islamic revolution to other countries is an absolute horseshit. There are also Kurds who while being Sunni Muslims themselves, had a bad time living under the Arab Ba'ath governments, no matter if they were Sunni or Alawites: publishing in their language was forbidden, they couldn't have Kurdish names and some of them didn't even have citizenships. Tensions between Arabs and Kurds were frequent, like the Qamishli riots in 2004, so they took the opportunity to form their own powerful militias in Northeastern Syria and thousands of Kurds from Iraq and Turkey poured in to help.

We have visited Syria in 1983 and 1987. What a fabulous country with such friendly, welcoming people and with such fabulous sights. Breaks my heart to see the country in ruins. However, we had a few experiences that indicated that Assad senior's regime tolerated no dissent. We felt safe at all times, but despite the overwhelming friendliness of Syrians, they became decidedly uneasy if the conversation even remotely turned to politics, and their eyes would be darting about to see if anyone was listening. However, I have my doubts that if Assad was overthrown, Syria would become a beacon of democracy, freedom and tolerance. I think the reason why he crushed dissent so brutally is that he knew what would replace him. The ruthlessness and sheer sadism of the hard core Islamists would soon wipe out any democratic leaning Syrians, and you would end up with a Syria run by Islamist head choppers.

Yeah, the Syrian Civil War has to be the most complex and byzantine conflict on the planet since WWII. The number of significant actors involved with divergent interests and activities is absolutely mind-blowing. It’s no wonder that this horrific mess still hasn’t been resolved.

And its fair to say all conflicts in the middle-east stem from western powers actions during the early 20th century. Countries were gaining indepence from colonization and in the aftermath of WW I countries borders were drawn in the sand instead of forming countries from the different ethnic and religious populations. In present day there are many minorities and different islamic religions and other at odds with each other in all middle eastern countries and because of this there will never be peace. New wars will start as old ones stop.

Simon won’t see this comment…he doesn’t moderate. Should be pretty obvious the ones on camera rarely have much say in the channel. So it’s up to the channel creator to want to switch platforms and even then the customer base unfortunately will be much to small. I hate KZbin policies and the fact that it’s become a “look at my new baby” or “let’s follow my family’s daily lives while we do nothing” platform. I can’t remember what the actual schools of thought are for the two different groups, Isis, and Taliban. I think the Taliban are Hanbali, well, Isis is something different. Regardless the two different on measures of sharia for example, the Taliban rejected three instruction of slavery and favor legal opinions were conducive to ruling while the Isis people just seem to want to kill everything they can grab. In Kazakhstan, there was a nationwide series of deadly riots, so the government called to Russia for aid, who came and gave it. It was a sanctioned and requested intervention to restore law and order in the face of anarchy. End it wasn’t just Russia. It was other central Asian state that joined in a cooperative, multi national peacekeeping effort.. after their assistance, including the riots, the government met with opposition and instituted policies wished of them. It seems like the moment anything goes East of the Elbe River. A lot of people in western countries Just instantly assume everyone is a stupid barbarian being a stupid barbarian for no reason.

The Far East, the borders with Finland, Norway and the Baltic States, Kaliningrad, the Caucasus, all require tens of thousands of troops to man and defend in anticipation of a conflict. Russia may not have committed its entire Army, but its definitely committed the bulk of its military to Ukraine, its where they send their best, straight into battle.

@@madgavin7568 Russian troops are continously being rotated out and at no given time are all the specialist units fighting in Ukraine..Thus atleast half of the Russian elite forces like the VDV divisions or the 1 Gaurds tank army is always sitting cozy in Russia in order to fight in other regions to protect Russia in case of Nato aggression..Russia didn't want to send all it's professional troops to Ukraine that's why it uses mercenaries so heavily and called up 300 thousand reservists in order to train them and give them combat experience in Ukraine, so the professional Russian army can be ready at all times to respond to Nato at a moments notice

He’s a propagandist, Idlib is held by Al-Nusra, not “pro-democracy forces”. Al-Nusra is lead by Abu Mohammad al-Julani who was a high ranking member of Al-Qaeda in Iraq (which ultimately became ISIS). These are the “US backed freedom fighters” they’re Sunni rebels exported from the Gulf monarchies. This war is just like the soviet afghan war. The US, the west and their regional Allie’s are supporting Sunni insurgents and Russia is supporting the secular government.

I was born outside of Syria, my family is kurdish. My God, the pictures I saw here in safe Europe were already traumatizing. The storys of my cousins during the war were some of the most heartshattering storys i heard. My 9 year old cousin kept waking up in the night, saying she had a bad dream in which a bomb exploded infront of them and hit a motorcyclist, who's body then fell on the frontshield of the car. The hardest was the fact, that it was never a bad dream - she was with my uncle in a car, trying to get some bread.

Bravo. This is a well thought out and explainer of the Syrian civil war, and all its complexities. Just a couple of points to note from someone who has spent 8 out of nearly 10 years here in north east Syria (now) and Iraq/Kurdistan before that. 1. Assad released 100s of Islamic extremists in 2012, thereabouts, on the previso that they do not attack the regime but the FSA. They migrated towards Raqqa, ISIS was born. (not as much US fault as most think) 2. While all sides have most definitely been involved in horrendous war crimes it should be noted that 95%+ of deaths/injuries were directly the responsibility of the Assad regime. 3. Up to 2018 over 30 individual chemical weapons attacks were investigated by the UK and OPCW and all bar one were attributed to the Assad regime. 4. the point you made about the multiple diverse groups who made up the rebellion was completely true. And this is the exact reason why people elsewhere can support Ukraine ( one country/government fighting an invading force of Russian Empire) but haven't a clue who they can support here in Syria. Wrong. This conflict has been going on for 1,300 years, and has nothing to do with modern politics (or oil pipelines). The problem is that the media have REFUSED to tell us the true history of the region - that this is a religio-ethnic conflict that no amount of Western troops can sort out. See the 600 Dead Cities of Aleppo - Christian cities that were desttroyed by the MusIim invaders in the 7th century. The only good guy in this internecine war is Assad, who leads a much persecuted semi-secular semi-Christian AIawite minority, and who has therefore always been the saviour of the region's minority groups - including the Syriac Christians. .... Why do you think that Syrian Christians have supported Asssad all this time...? Had Assad not defended the Christians, the entire Christian population would have been exiled by the Muslim ‘moderates’. There would be yet more ‘Dead Cities of Aleppo’ - the 800 towns around Aleppo that were devastated during the Muslim invasion of the 8th century. These ancient Christian cities and their cathedrals are still there - abandoned - littering the formerly prosperous eastern realm of the Roman and Byzantine Empires. ralph
