It's impressive to see such a big guy be so effective in close quarters - and he needs to be good there to be in a position to land those patented inside leg kicks. In the earlier years, my impression of him was that he was similar to Bonjasky - a tight guard with good leg kicks, mostly point fighting. But he's greatly diversified his arsenal since, and has been able to mix in other strikes beautifully. Kudos for another excellent breakdown.

Like a liver punch - the power isn’t so important. Accuracy and speed more so.
@ricklodestein11013 жыл бұрын
Your inner thigh is like a Shockwave. You have a major artery there. Its almost as if you completely stop the blood flow and the body has to recover before being able to effectively use it. By that time he has already hit you and adjusting for the next attack. He's learned to roll opponents strikes off as if they have no effect.
@kristianjensen58773 жыл бұрын
@@ricklodestein1101Yep. The leg muscles are also less densely packed on the inside of the leg than on the outside, so kinetic force generally penetrates easier into the tendons, blood vessels and bone embedded there.
@hzuiel3 жыл бұрын
@@serenityinside1 You are right about accuracy, but the speed vs power thing is nonsense. You need power to accelerate things and create speed, and without speed the only other factor for force is mass. It would be better to just say accuracy has priority over power.
@KennyKenKin3 жыл бұрын
@@hzuiel True for the most part but speed isn't always power. Power is going to really about the follow through of the strike. You can do touch and go sparring and still strike quickly but while also not following through and causing more damage. Snap kicks are fast kicks but not super powerful. But with accuracy they can be devastating. There is a reason that jabs are thrown more often than crosses. They are faster but not stronger.
@YSSipher3 жыл бұрын
He's definitely changing the game with the inside leg kicks. It makes it even more deadly because he breaks down the lower body with inside and outside kick. That turning high block/guard into the leg kick is gold also. A lot of soft spots within the inner leg. Being hit in the right spot can fuck up the blood flow. The fact that his inner leg kicks set ups require a lot of recovery allows a lot of options depending on how his opponent reacts. If he ends up in the UFC however there will be a lot of ref oversight due to chances of low blows... And a crafty opponent will use that to their advantage.

What do you think about Verhoeven's matches with Badr Hari? It looked like he usually was getting beaten out by Badr, but those fights all ended with Badr getting an injury to stop the bout (as opposed to a clean KO). What did Badr figure out compared to Verhoeven's other opponents?
@TheModernMartialArtist3 жыл бұрын
Hari's rhythm and feints made it too hard for Verhoeven to catch him with range finders or intercept his attacks, and Hari moved off angle before Verhoeven had time to return a counter. In other words, he was already gone haha. But props to Verhoeven for his defense and fundamentals, sometimes those can beat all the fancy stuff and now it has twice. Would love to see a third fight with no injuries and a clean KO though.

@@TheModernMartialArtist The first match against Rico should never have happened, Badr almost came out of retirment to fight him without one or two "warm-up fights" at least, then he might had a chance, because skill-wise, technical-wise and fighting IQ, Badr is much better than Rico. The biggest plus points for Rico are his physics, endurance and as you mentioned his fundamentals.

Would love to see a third fight between them. But im afraid Badr is past his prime, his body just isn't what it used to be.

Rico always needs time to warm up, so it's no surprise to me that Badr always scores in the first couples of rounds.
@laurelmoore39043 жыл бұрын
Badr is past his prime firstly. And he is a more phenomenal fighter where as rico is more traditional. A healthy badr in his prime mops the floor with rico. As anyone watching has seen in their two meetings. But time is undefeated...your body can only take so much. Both are great fighters.

These leg kicks are standard repertoire in Kyokushin: stand too square and you get it on the inside. Stand too sideways and you get it on the outside. Thank you for making the video, great fighter using technikue usually seen in much lower weightclass, one of a kind for his class.
@azo50003 жыл бұрын
Every stance has its weaknesses and strengths. I think he has gotten extremely good at countering the traditional boxing stance. What he realizes is that the stance traditional boxing stance is unbalanced, and that one leg carries more weight than the other, and another leg acts as the stabilizer. I think if someone were to adopt a square stance (facing straight forward, feet forward) with good sidestep parries, especially realizing to step away when being in a combo of punches, they would stand a far better chance.

He has improved immensely in the last years, he is big and strong and has very good skills, and he seems a nice and decent guy, still he received a gift decision against Ghita( won the rematch fair and square in the next match), another one against Peter Aerts, he lost a very suspicious match against a unknown russian in 2015, and won two others very suspicious matches against Badr Hari who knocked him down all over the ring, almost knocked him out and battered him badly , but all of a sudden suffered injuries ( see for yourselves). He was no match for K1 past fighters such as Schilt( who defeated him), Peter Aerts , Remy Bonjasky, maybe Le Banner, Sefo ,a prime Ignashov and other of the kickboxing legends. He is very well advertised and matched, and kickboxing isn't what it used to be 20 years ago, when mma emerged as the new martial arts sensation.

I think part of what makes the rear-inside leg kick so devastating is that in the process of keeping the lead leg light to protect it from leg kicks, one thus makes the rear leg heavy and thus more vulnerable to leg kicks if it can be reached.

Grappling. Honestly, if the old rules were back 90% of these grapplers would probably be dead. You could knee someone as they were coming down to you, now you can't. You could hit behind the head, jab eyes go for balls etc. Kick people while they were on the ground. Any one of these rules being allowed would limit grapplers. Grappling has honestly ruined lots of fight sports mainly due to the safety concerns (even though all of the submissions cause harm and can kill if they're unconcious for too long.)

@@cartoonhanks1708 nobody wants to see ball-shots and punches to the back of the head. the knees to a grounded opponent would be sweet but it's not like the best grapplers wouldn't be using this stuff, too. Khabib might have actually killed someone if he was allowed to do that.

@@cartoonhanks1708 I agree but who knows. Izzy has been doing relatively well in his division with limited takedown defense, and zero grappling. I remember Rico was training with DC at AKA a few years back and DC was impressed. Honestly, I think the money might be better in kickboxing.

@@jackhenry9976 Khabib is probably an exception but Historically, grapplers don’t do so well when there isn’t a limited rule set. People tend to avoid the ground if they know they could possibly be head stomped or soccer kicked.
