Matt, I certainly appreciate the referral! We do offer the bolt-on bracket kits for the 99-07c GM Trucks. However, I just want to clarify that our kit is not the one that was featured in the original video, as we have had some confusion among a few customers about that. I do not believe that seller from the PerformanceTrucks.Net Forum is still around, but he was not affiliated with us and our kit does differ from his a bit. Unlike his kit, our kit centers the cooler in the grill opening rather than offsetting and our brackets are powder coated silver, rather than left raw aluminum. Our kit includes all mounting hardware (stainless steel), but DOES NOT include any solution for adapting the OEM cooler lines. A universal plumbing kit is included with the 40K cooler, but we do not supply the quick connect style fittings or a compression fitting to adapt the line. I typically do not advise the use of compression fittings on transmission cooler lines due to the risk of collateral damage in the event of a failure. However, if someone is set on using one, I highly recommend the use of a steel Swage-Lok style compression fitting over a brass compression as the bite force is substantially higher. We do offer braided stainless PTFE trans line packages that are designed to replace the entire OEM line assembly an run directly from the transmission to the front mounted 40K cooler. These may be overkill for a lot of applications, but I at least wanted to mention that solution for guys looking for a 100% direct-fit bolt-on package. Our bracket sets are not bolt-on for the 2007-2013 model trucks as those trucks use a welded lower brace unlike one that is bolted in place like the 99-07c trucks. Our kit can be used on the 07-13 models, but would require cutting the OEM lower brace/bracket off and using self-tapping hardware to mount our lower bracket which is designed to occupy that space. Additionally, some clearancing of the foam bumper support padding may be required in order to clear the line set on those models.

Instead of installing both transmission lines you can cut the hard line on both ends of the leaky rubber part. Flare the ends of the metal lines and use rubber line to hook them back together. (Be sure the rubber line is marked TOC and isn't fuel line. TOC= Transmission Oil Cooler)

I've had awesome luck with all my 4L60E transmissions. I built one up for my latest build. The problem isn't so much the design, it's GM cutting corners so the trans doesn't last as long. Metal checkballs pass through the separator plate on the valve body. Then you burn up clutches. One some older 4L60E's the sun shell also tends to brake (I think they fixed that on later ones). Lastly, not catastrphic but the plastic accumulators tend to crack. These all can be fixed for a few bucks... If you have a later model 4L60E with improved sun shell, then simply lowering your service pan on trans and replacing checkballs with plastic, and accumulator with pinless metal will get you pretty well there. Otherwise, 4L60E trans is pretty awesome. You can also throw a boost valve in the pump while you have the pan down. Most of newer ones come with a corvette style servo too. They are actually rock solid after you do a few simple fixes like that. If you crack the case open you can go with a wider band, and some slightly improved clutches. It's a solid design.

That Lucas additive has been great. I put it in...through the dipstick tube, and it did take FOREVER. But the clunk in park to reverse and a slight slip in 2nd disappeared in the 4L60 in the same Tahoe of my other comment. No slips or problems since I did a fluid and filter change and added it in. I thought the tow would eat it up and have to add more, but it was great and still no problems. I wish I added it during the fluid change but I thought the change might have solved the problem initially. I also taught my wife to use the parking brake and let the truck stop before shifting into park or reverse and it hasn't come back. Well over 180k miles on it and still going strong.

I added the largest Derale stacked plate cooler with fan onto my 2003 Savana Van. Mounted it under the chassis and bypassed the radiator. I was in the South so no severe cold winters. Delivered bottled water so was waaaay over payload to start the delivery day. I had the 4L60E rebuilt, when I was ready, at 400,000 miles. Trans temp was always 40*-50* less than the coolant temp. The only downside was that I had to replace the cooler twice because of leaks. Out of warranty of course. So, the lesson to learn is to get a trans cooler no matter what. HEAT is what kills transmissions.

for the bad oil lines, you can just cut out the rubber hose pieces and then with a Dremel, keeping the metal oil line intact, Just cut off the metal clamp and use two "constant tension springs" in place of the proprietary metal clamps. What happens is over time, the rubber hose shrinks and the propriety clamps stay the same size and it leaks, constant tension spring clamps fix the issue. Buy new hoses to replace the bad ones at your local auto store, taking a piece of the old rubber hose for reference. So four total for one rubber hose, I have been running my Silverado with that fix for over 4 years now without it slipping off.

Matt thanks for the video. Be aware that the affiliated link you have for the cooler is for the model number LPD47391 which DOESN'T have the cold weather bypass which is required for vehicles being driven in temperatures below 32F. You may want to check which model you installed or fix the link. I just found out the hard way by following the link. They sell people the LPD47391 from the link and describe it as having the bypass. LPD4739 has the bypass. I learned this once it showed up and I read the box. I see were you live so you might take a look at yours just in case I plan on pulling 7500 travel trailer so I need it to be right. Right now there is a $50 dollar difference between the two.

I just installed a derale 13403. It’s way easier than the tru cool to install. You can mount it right where the stock one is and use the existing lines and factory fitting. No crappy barb fittings or soft hose. It’s rated for 37k btu’s so just a little less than the tru cool. With it being a stacked plate it’s built stronger and is a smaller footprint letting your radiation get cooler. You just need an adapter to go from the big inlets in the derale to the smaller factory fitting. I then used 4 flat corner brackets from Home Depot and some self tapping screws to attach to the existing frame. So easy!

really torn between this 40k or a smaller unit with a fan for cooling the trans in my 12 tahoe. It's high mileage and the temps are way too high for my liking, even when not towing. Changing the fluid helps initially but they do creep...and once that fluid hits a 220*, it gets there pretty quick from then on out until you change it again. I can appreciate both the work you document and the frustration you show...real life DIY struggles.

A 4l80 wouldn't be a right choice its heavier and longer. You can build a 4l60e to handle a 1,000hp. I built a 4l60E heavy duty unit in my garage for under 700 bucks with upgraded parts, heavy duty 3-4 clutch pack, wider heavy duty 2nd-4th over drive band, Corvette servos and solenoids, with a trans-go HD shift improver kit. Used a sonnax beast SunShell and upgraded to a 5 pinion planetary gear set. My build is very close to performabuilt 4l60e level 2. With a level 1 type firm shift instead of harsh hitting tire chirping shifts. Beats a slow heavy 4l80 anyday

@@ashtonmariefranklin725 so many things wrong with this comment I wouldn't know where to start. It is true that a 4l60e trannsmissions can and have been built for thousand horsepower vehicles. But those vehicles have to be fairly light and even then the transmissions tend to last a very short time. There are so many small issues with the 4l60 that you're not going to fix them with performance parts and frictions. I'm not trying to say that the 4l60 is a bad transmission. What I'm saying is it's a light duty transmission that when you throw thousands of dollars that becomes a decent medium duty transmission. It is not well suited for vehicles above-average power and above average weight. Some years back I had a built 4l60e on a 2 door GMC Yukon that weighed approx 5380 lbs, that transmission was built with red alto frictions wide HD 2-4 upgraded belt upgraded bells, shafts, shift kit, solenoids etc. A very well built transmission that would have lasted quite a while on the approx 330 hp sbc that I had in there. Well when that 383 sbc let go I built a ls3 from a junkyard motor, threw a few performance parts at it and made 540hp NA on a chassis dyno. My 4l60e lasted four days with that engine before it gave up the ghost, as I knew it would (already had a 4l80e planned) went to a junkyard, pulled a 4l80e from a 2002 suburban and pulled a second one from a beaten up flatbed 3500. The first one I swapped into the Yukon the next day just as it was, (completely stock 4l80 and it is still holding up fine 5 months later) the second transmission I am rebuilding with the best parts I can get ahold of as I can afford them. (Honestly not in a hurry as the old stock 4l80 in the truck now is holding up fine and I'll wait till it dies before swapping) Performabuilt regularly over-rates their Transmissions by a significant amount. Honestly take any of their Transmissions and multiply the rated horsepower by 0.75 and that's probably the maximum that transmission will be able to hold up to. I'd say even the best quality high-performance 4l60 can handle into the 650 horsepower range in a mid weight car. Much more than that and even the best built 4L60 is going to shit the bed. Yes I know that there have been some people that run massive power through their 4l60 s but even if they are running a 1000 horsepower engine they are not putting all that power through the transmission. 1 run on a drag strip and almost inevitably they will destroy it. But dont just take my word for it, try some online forums like ls1tech, performancetrucks.net or whatever online fourm you frequent. You are going to find several things, 1. Performabuilt ridiculously over, rates their transmissions 2. The 4l60doesnt hold up to horsepower and weight. 3. Everyone eventually swaps to the 4l80. If You dont want to take my and their word for it, then get a performabuilt transmission and then actually try to push the horsepower it is rated for through it. For instance take a Performabuilt Level 2 - pro race 4l60e they say it supports 700 RWHP ! So if you account for the approx 15% loss in a RWD vehicle that is about 830 hp at the crank. I assure you if you bolted 800 hp to that transmission and sent it you would have a expensive and heavy doorstop. Hell I bet you the outcome would be the same with 600 crank hp. Take a stock 4l80, install decent frictions and a mild shift kit and it will hold as much if not more than even the best built 4l60. A 4L80 transmission is indeed heavier. Both are filled with ATF the 4l60 weighs about 146 lb while a 4l80 weighs about 248 lb. The 4l80 is also a little longer. Two wheel drive version of the 4L80 is just under 3" longer then the two wheel drive 4l60. Honestly except for in very short wheelbase vehicles that length difference barely matters. The 4wd version of the 4l80e + transfer case adapter is only about 3/4" longer than the 4l60e + adapter. Seriously, do some research and gain some experience befor posting misleading comments.

I would of by passed the radiator. My dad’s radiator leaked coolant into the trans and smoked it.

Zack Meuth yea they have the bracket and that’s it. I checked them out. Whoever sold him this bracket kit included everything he needed. So yea it’s cheaper but you still have to get the other stuff you need.

Damn, I have this same cooler that I've been meaning to hook up, but I have a turbocharged Silverado and my intercooler is mounted there and I'm also gonna do a 4l80 swap, or else that kit seems really nice idea. I thought about mounting it low like behind the bumper and seeing how it does or I might have to cut some holes in the bumper to let air flow.

Excellent video. One question for you. After installing the trans cooler did you notice your engine temp being higher? I know the stock engine temp gauge sucks and is not that accurate, but any difference you could tell or see? I have a 03' Z71 Tahoe and I am looking at buying the cooler and the install kit as you have done. I pull a 7x16 enclosed cargo from time to time and I will be pulling a boat to Lk. George there in the Adirondacks in August. By the way I live in NC. Electric fans are in the near future so that should help with the radiator surface area being blocked by the trans cooler.

@lsxmatt would you ever do a electric fans conversion and Instead of having it running a clutch fan on the Tahoe?? For better cooling on towing. If you do I would like to see a video from you of it, so keep doing videos I like them and they do help. Thx

Nice video. Is that not too much cooling during the winter outdoor temperatures? Do you partially block it off in the winter when not towing like they do on big highway transport trucks?

If you use the specified transmission fluid for your transmission you should not have any slipping or any other problems with the transmission for at least 220,000 miles(from New). As soon as you start adding other fluids to your transmission you will find it will wear out faster and have problems sooner(like slipping, etc).

So I'm hoping you will answer this question, I've seen other videos where they have bypassed the radiator with the true cool cooler and they are getting much lower temps, My question is does your tahoe have a transmission temp gauge in cluster, and if so what temperatures are you achieving now?. Considering doing this to my 04 Silverado and bypassing the radiator for the cooler temps otherwise the transmission temp Will still be the same as before with a stock cooler, with this true cooler installed due to the thermostat controls the temp of antifreeze running thru radiator. I have found a kit online that replaces stock lines And stock cooler with high compression braided lines as well as the true cool but we're talking $450, As opposed to roughly a little over $200 on the kit you did. I did just have my 4L60 rebuilt back in October And I want to extend the life as long as possible.. Thank you in advance for answering my question

Oh my LsxMatt tells his truck to stop and it does. He has voice command over his vehicles. I guess that is the reason for the "technical difficulties" I wonder what that language does to the vehicles.
