I went over from Australia and rode it last year on my 3 month trip around America. It's a good road but there's better in the area. Easy enough to ride, most crashes are due to inexperienced riders. If you get a chance, ride the Blue Ridge Parkway, goes for hundreds of miles, and is a great ride.
@Dolby109 Жыл бұрын
Personally I like Cherohala better than most of the Blue Ridge, and it looks like she was on that in the beginning of the video, but took the GPS route down a rough road towards the Tail instead of heading straight to the gas station in Robinsville that she ended up at anyway. The new section of the Foothills parkway near Gatlinburg is also excellent. But the Tail is still my favorite.

Been on the Dragon many times. It’s not the road that is dangerous, but the drivers. Very fun place though.

The dragon is a rarity in the US. That attracts any kind of biker, making the road dangerous.

@The Old Husky Not correct, I have been to the dragon many times. There are people of all ages and skill set. I have seen quit a few HD or cruisers go off the road with ''old'' people. Usually with very little protective gear. The T shirt and Bandana they sell at HD must be DOT approved 😉

Miss Kinga, I do not know which was more Lovely; You and Chillie or the views so many speed right on past. It's been a couple decades since I put my 65 Panhead Electra Glide up and down that road. I never did it for a time by speed so I may have the slowest time in history and I do not care, I got the view! Loved and Appreciated your statement about the noise, Thank You! Loud pipes on car or bike do not save lives but they sure scare wildlife. My last time through the "Dragon" was on my 04 Road King and the slow speed limits do allow for great viewing. I am so glad you are enjoying America, I just wish we represented ourselves better as a whole. Be safe and please know, you are in my prayers Hoka Hey

Oh wow wow wow, that was an absolutely beautiful ride. A lovely road that you rode with respect and enjoyment. All the people who simply speed won't even see anything. I love hearing Chillies engine tones as she gears up and down. That cabin was delightful. Loving your journey so much. Happy riding further. 😁👍

Did it in 2002. Wasn't crowded then. Just me and a half-dozen riders on a nice fall weekday. Other roads in the region have developed their own status. VA 16 from Marion, Virginia over the mountains is now called "Back of the Dragon." We camped at Hungry Mother State Park and were only spared the din of bike engines when it got dark. NC 421 from Mountain City to Bristol, Tennessee is called The Snake. US 58 from Damascus, Virginia to Mouth of Wilson, VA has no established name, but I think it leaves all the previous roads in the dust. Double points if you pause partway through to take 600 to the top of Whitetop Mountain. It's now paved. I scrambled up the route on my bike when it was still gravel. Btw, lady rider as well. I did all those roads solo, plus a number of x-country rides. The SCOLDING I received from people, not to mention a few policemen who admonished me with a "your husband ALLOWS you to do these rides?"

You actually started out on one of the nicer roads. When you left Tellico Plains you were on the Cherohala Skyway. The shortcut you tried to take goes throughout the Joyce Kilmer Forest. The gas station you stopped at is in North Carolina. The first dam you passed before you got to Deals Gap was used in the movie The Fugitive. That’s the dam Harrison Ford slid down. The weird three wheeled vehicle is a slingshot. One a weekend day there would be hundreds of bikes at Deals Gap.

Pick a road, any road in that region and you will have a blast. Ride within your skill limits or you die or the very least your bike goes home via a truck. We saw ambulances and wreckage on flat beds every time we went there. Judy and I stayed in a room by the tree. Thanks for memories. Best ride in my opinion is the long Blue Ridge, and every side road off it.

I and my friends all rode those roads back in the early 1970’s on rigids, and springers ,Knuckleheads ,Panheads etc. We didn’t have the cool names then like “The Tail of the Dragon” the roads were even smaller with no fog line paint. I’m amazed to watch all these videos of people crashing left and right on these bikes with all the new suspension systems and brakes etc. I guess old Harleys just worked better. (Well, really it’s just the riders knowing their limits)

Well I now have figured out that your episodes are no where near where you are, so I guess that makes a lot of sense. By doing it that way no one really knows where you are, which is probably god for safety reasons. The motorcycle group I ride with went to the tail of the dragon, twice, last 2 yrs. I did not go but it is a cool ride. I am sure the biggest reason people crash is too fast and looking at the scenery. When I saw you were doing the dragon, first thought was a peace of cake for a veteran rider like you, I know you have been in much more rough roads than the dragon. It is very pretty country for sure. Closer to Texas where I am, there are some good roads and rides in Arkansas where i am from, and not so far away. Glad you enjoyed the ride, stay safe. Stocky.

The Dragon is not that bad if you ride it conservatively first and learn it. I have rode it many times both solo and with a pillion and find it to be rather boring as a majority of the time you are in a green tunnel and can't see much scenery. When in the area I stay off of the Dragon during the weekends because that's when the weekend warriors are out there "testing themselves." I much prefer other roads like the Cherohala, the Rattler, BRP etc, there are many options on places to ride that are pretty good without the hype and the crowds.
