This was a beautiful reading of one of the most beautiful stories in Middle Earth. Thank you. I never fully understood why Elrond was so irritable in this story until I heard you read it. He's faced with an impossible choice. Either turn down the man he saw as his own son, and thus lose him forever for if he tells Aragorn no then he'll leave Rivendell and never come back. Or he must tell Arwen yes and thus face them parting beyond the circles of the world. He either loses his son or loses his daughter, and I honestly can't imagine being forced to make such as choice, such that no matter the outcome of the war that was to come he was going to lose someone very dear to him. That would indeed be cause for dread.

In the books, Elrond is never against the Aragorn and Arwen relationship. It's just that Aragorn has to reunite first the kingdom of Arnor and Gondor, before they talk about.

"Estel, Estel!" ("Hope" for Aragorn) she cried, 💔, and with that even as he took her hand and kissed it, he fell into sleep. Then a great beauty was revealed in him, so that all who after came there looked on him in wonder, for they saw that the grace of his youth, and the valour of his manhood... and the wisdom and majesty of his age were blended together. 🍂🍁 And long there he lay, an image of the splendour of the Kings of Men👑 👑👑 in glory undimmed before the breaking of the world.⚡️ But Arwen went forth from the House, and the light of her eyes was quenched,😔💔 and it seemed to her people that she had become cold and grey as nightfall in winter that comes without a star.... 😪🌟 🍂🍁🍃🍁🍂 Fantastic 💯 Thank you 🌟

Beautifully done. Thank you. If you ever release again, it would be so awesome to have a female voice for Estel's mother, and Arwen. I'm going to listen at least once a year at the end of June, because in the calendar, the marriage of Aragorn and Arwen takes place around July 1st.

You're welcome, I'm very glad you'd find this fit for a yearly reading. I've always felt some regret that Tolkien couldn't find a way to include this story in the main text: I'm sure too many readers have left it unread in the Appendices. And of course I agree it would be better to find a woman to replace me for Gilraen and Arwen. I'll see what I can do.

With every listening to the story I gain deeper insight into the motives and meanings. Grok this, a small thing like hiding from your neighbors was enough to stir the ring towards the shadow.

Wow - thank you! For me, it is the single most beloved tale in the appendices, and I've wanted to go back and read it, but have not found the time. Now, I came across this reading - wow. You have given it the solemn voice and clarity it deserves. JRR would have loved this reading.

i’ve always considered this to be assigned reading, and i just recently read that when they told tolkien he couldn’t put the appendices in the paperback edition, he said ‘just leave the tale of aragorn and arwen.’ so in a way i was right all along

*Dragash* and *Bluefax* have each created magnificent soundscapes of tLotR and The Hobbit respectively. However *Menelvagor* easily has the very best/perfect voice for a "dry" reading of Tolkien's works; miles and miles better than Rob Inglis (far too dull) and Martin Shaw (far too pompous). The Tolkien Estate would do well to consult with *Menelvagor* for an official reading of Unfinished Tales, Beren and Luthien, CoH and FoG as well as the Prologue and the rest of the Appendices of tLotR.

Your words are far too kind to be true, but I thank you very much for them. I'll be putting out another chapter of LOTR in the next few months, so you'll have another chance to judge me then. As for the readers you mention, I grew up on Rob Inglis, whom I find far from dull: but perhaps it's just nostalgia.

This has to be the saddest part of Tolkien’s writings. The parting of Frodo from Sam was sad but this story is heartbreaking because it leaves out all the glad years that the two lived together and just goes to a painful ending with no hope of reunion. Tolkien himself was upset that so much of the history of Europe (England in particular) and the people who had lived in those lands had been basically wiped out once the Romans invaded. Then a form of Christianity came in and twisted itself into the traditions of the people that were there. It was difficult for him to find much information about the ancient history of the region because most of it has been destroyed by various civilizations that came through…and there were many. Maybe that is why he ended these stories with the erasing of the “elder days” from all memory. Although there are still country people who will tell you that some kind of weird entities still exist in some parts.

You're correct about everything except the no hope of reunion. That is the crux of the doom of men. That though they leave the world and their fate is unknown, there is hope (faith) in reunion. It is reunion with her father and other elves that there is no hope of. Not at least until after the end of the world.
