Not only that Jaime Lannister wouldn't have a chance against Aragorn, Game of Thrones books (even if GRRM finishes them) can't compete with LOTR. Tolkien's work inspires the best in people, Martin's not so much. It has its appeal, I like some characters in GOT books, but there is so much nastiness and brutality there that I was sick to my stomach while I was reading some chapters. My husband wouldn't touch GRRM's books, he just watched the show.

My favorite Third Age character. He's the archetypal King and Warrior and all around the best embodiment of the healthy masculine in literature-he's gentle in friendship, fierce in battle, wise as a leader, courageous and intrepid as a traveler, an emotive poet, a compassionate and empathetic companion, and a loyal lover. Pretty much my ideal role model.

@@jonrwert Certainly true in the films. In the books, the doubt is less apparent and probably better described as humility. His doubt is more focused on exactly which road to take in order to prevail and come fully into himself. He knows exactly who he is and what he's for for and accepts the burden of that responsibility without complaint. The selflessness in sacrificing of an easy life for that destiny is also noteworthy.

@@christianresel8051the problem with Padme’s death is she’s just had two babies who need her, who should’ve been enough to give her a will to live despite her heartbreak. Arwen, on the other hand, is akin to many widows who lived long lives with their spouses and watched their children grow, snd ultimately cannot imagine life without their lost love, and leave this world to find them again, knowing their children are grown and settled and will be alright.

I think it can't be overstated how impressive it is that Aragorn looked into the Palantír (when, as Gimli pointed out, even Gandalf feared such an encounter) and was able to wrestle the stone from Sauron's control. He literally beat Sauron in a mental duel! Granted, the stone was rightfully his and this was an important factor, but it is still an impressive feat. It truly shows that he is one of the great, powerful leaders of Middle Earth, with physical and mental strength, willpower, endurance and abilities that are far above those of normal men. As Legolas later says, the way Aragorn commanded the Army of the Dead and urged his company forward despite their fear and exhaustion shows how much willpower and "capability of domination" (for lack of a better word) he has - had he taken the ring, he would've been a powerful and terrible ruler.

@partyboi8773

This! Aragorn confronting Sauron through the Palantir is maybe my favorite moment in the books, even though we only learn about it by Aragorn saying so after the fact. There's a lot I love about Peter Jackson's movies, but they did Aragorn very very dirty when it comes to the Palantir: both when he looks at it in Meduseld and faints, and then when Sauron gets the better of him the second time. Also, having Elrond magically appear an all-knowing Basil Exposition and say "There's another army coming, and also here's an amazing sword for you, so what you should do now is show the sword to these ghosts and they'll win all your battles for you" really destroys the sense of Aragorn's wisdom, force of will, and willingness to face any risk. I think this is one big reason why those who know the movies and not the books think Aragorn is somehow lesser than Legolas or even Boromir, Jaime Lannister, etc.

I recently read a book about the adaptation of LOTR to film (Picturing Tolkien, if you're interested) in which one chapter describes the changes made to the character of Aragorn. The most prominent point of the essay was that Aragorn was built up not just as a good-guy hero (which he already was in the books), but as the hero who's always right. The books' Aragorn is a more democratic leader; numerous decisions, such as the Fellowship's Parth Galen debate over whether to go to Minas Tirith or Mordor, King Theoden's relocating to Helm's Deep, and the Last Debate, are all made with the approval of the group. In the movies, Aragorn always takes charge, and always seems to be right. He even overrides Gandalf on numerous occasions: as you state here, the book's Aragorn admits that Gandalf followed his lead almost to disaster at Caradhras, but in the film, it's he who insists: "Gandalf, we must turn back!" when the blizzard strikes. Or, to bring up the Last Debate again, Aragorn easily overrides Gandalf's counsel that Sauron won't take the bait... and he's completely right. In the book, he says: "Let none now reject the counsels of Gandalf... I do not yet claim to command any man. Let others choose as they will." And compare the Mouth of Sauron confrontation in the book (wherein Gandalf remains strong and stands up to the Mouth even after the "revelation" of Frodo's capture) with its portrayal in the film (wherein the horrible lie brings tears of sadness and despair to Gandalf's eyes, leaving Aragorn to ride forth and furiously decapitate the Mouth). Aragorn was always larger-than-life, but the movies build him up to be an even stronger leader than Gandalf!

40:38 Aragorn declares that the Shire is exclusive to the Hobbits and that no one else, especially Men were allowed into its borders. That is why he "keeps to his own law" and meets his friends at the border when he is in the North. Of course, his decree doesn't quite apply to Dwarves (who were also little people, and traveled through the Shire from the Blue Mountains) and Elves like the final ride of the Wise to the Havens, who pass through to the Towers, which are in Hobbit territory.. Bree remains the one settlement where Hobbits and Men live together.

Since his ban only applies to Men, I sure hope Legolas and Gimli were able to visit the hobbits in the Shire over the years.

I love this channel. When LOTR first came out I had no knowledge of it, but my friend Glen read all the books. Late Glen T, passed in 2021. He would explain the movie to us from the books, and we were all ears. I checked out other channels on LOTR, but NITR is my favourite.

"Sons of Gondor! Or Rohan! My brothers! I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of Men fails, when we foresake our friends, and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields when the Age of Men comes crashing down, but it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good earth, I bid you men, Men of the West!"

Arwen is, of course, not exactly an elf maiden, though often described that way. She lives like one. But one cannot simply become human after being of elven kind. The truth is, her nature was not decided until her choice. And her choice was a mortal life, long as she had lived. Elrond has always been my favorite Tolkien character. And this story, ostensibly full of hope and renewal, is bitter to him. Not only does he lose his daughter, who is dear to him, the same way he lost his brother. He also foresees that the end will be hard for her. Arwen was not yet tired of her life when Aragorn gave up his life. That scene wherein she tells him that now she understands the downfall of Numenor is powerful. It may be that he loses both his sons this way as well. We do not know, except that they are close with Aragorn and the Dunedain, and Elrond takes ship without them.

I enjoyed seeing your take on Aragorn's story as I have been trying to extrapolate more of it out of what we were given such as racking my brain as to what exactly were the Great Deeds that he did when he was 20 in the company of the sons of Elrond. My current head cannon is that he took down a two headed troll. One thing I will note that you missed is at about 15:48 He saw the hobbits talking to Tom Bombadil before they entered Bree then he jumped over the wall and was all mysterious-like in the Prancing Pony. Now this does not mean that he knows Tom Bombadil personally but he could and I like to think that he does, unless I'm forgetting something else he says I have not read the books in a while I am due for a reread.
