My assessment (as someone who admittedly doesn't know a whole lot about the Orthodox churches but has been trying to learn about various calendars and systems for calculating the date of Easter out of curiosity) is that the Revised Julian calendar failed (in the sense that it is not universally adopted among Orthodox churches and is very controversial) not because of any issue with the calendar itself, but because they failed to agree to a revision to the calculation of the date of Easter that would place it within the dates of 22 March and 25 April on the new calendar. This led to new calendarists continuing to use the old calendar for the calculation of the date of Easter and all other dates that depend on it. This disrupts the liturgical calendar, for example by shortening the length of the Apostles' fast by 13 days and making it absent in some years, and these irregularities will get worse over time. It's also somewhat bizarre to me that they would adjust the dates of holidays such as Christmas, but not Easter, when I would think Easter would have the greatest seasonal significance. They could go for an astronomical definition of Easter, which would yield the same date as the Western date in most years, or they could go for a schematic calculation similar to the Gregorian one, but adapted to the Revised Julian calendar, which would yield the same date as the Western date for every year until 2802. The schematic calculation could be achieved by taking the Gregorian computus, but inserting a solar correction every time the Revised Julian calendar omits a leap day, rather than every time the Gregorian one does. Equivalently, you can take Gauss's Easter algorithm and replace the variable q = floor(k/4) with q = floor((2k+6)/9). This would also bring the Orthodox ecclesiastical full moon date, which is currently about four days slow, in line with the actual full moon, give or take a day. Either way would result in the average date of Easter being advanced by the same number of days as all the other holidays, which would maintain the overall harmony of the liturgical calendar. My information has mostly come from these Wikipedia articles. If I have any of the facts wrong or if anyone has a different assessment of the situation, please chime in! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Date_of_Easter en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revised_Julian_calendar en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reform_of_the_date_of_Easter en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apostles%27_Fast

AN UNPRECEDENTED DECISION: THE POLISH ORTHODOX CHURCH IS RETURNING TO THE OLD CALENDAR Warsaw, March 31, 2014 On March 18, in the residence of the Metropolitan Savva of Warsaw and All Poland, the spring session of the Synod of Bishops of the Polish Orthodox Church, unprecedented decision was made-the first in the history of the Orthodox Church. A Church that currently lives according to the new style calendar has accepted a resolution to return to the old (Julian) calendar.
@johnnyd23834 жыл бұрын
Several points I would like to mention: 1. Julian calendar is NOT a solar calendar as it is based on syderic (astronomical) year, hence his "inaccuracy" when it comes to solar year. It is in fact more accurate within syderic basis comparing to the Gregorian's cal. accuracy within solar basis. Astronomers use Julian calendar because of it's accuracy when it comes to the stars movements and long time periods. 2. Change of the calendar within OC was initiated by the very shady figure named Meletius Metaxakis. Change was not accepted by all local churches for several reasons: a) it introduces numerous problems within the cycle of services. b) it is impossible to calculate the date of the Easter using Gregorian calendar (or revised one). 3. Orthodox Churches that adopted revised calendar are still celebrating Easter on a date that is calculated on a basis of Julian calendar. So... it is simply impossible to completely leave Julian calendar in Orthodoxy. Proper date of Easter can't be determined without Julian calendar. Formula is far more complicated than explanation in the video. Question rises: Why should Church move to any other calendar if it main holiday must be calculated using Julian calendar?!?
@BibleIllustrated4 жыл бұрын
How is Julian calendar used when calculating Pascha exactly?
@johnnyd23834 жыл бұрын
@@BibleIllustrated To be honest, I do not know. The whole process is left to the Church of Alexandria to calculate and proclaim out to the entire Orthodoxy the result. Beside those details you have mentioned in your video, I know that there are 19 years cycle tables based on Julian calendar that are containing "shifting days" and they are used in accordance with 28 years solar cycle and they are based on year when 1st Ecumenical Council was held (325AD). I usually stop here and just give up.! Alexandria will do it and send out next date. What is interesting though is that as time goes on, less and less will Orthodox and Catholic dates of Easter match. By the year 2700AD, they will never match. God bless..

Julian Calendar had leap years. The problem was that there were too many. The Gregorian calendar added the following rules for leap years: an additional day is appended to the month of February every 4th year EXCEPT if that year is a new Century but not a new century divisible by 400. Example: the year 1900 was NOT a leap year. 1904 was. 1996 was a leap year. 2004 was a leap year, but 2000 WAS a leap year despite being a new century because 2000 is divisible by 400.

Despite this, a lot of autocphealous Orthodox Churches started switching over to the New Calendar anyways.

Hey, i know this might be off-topic, but what is your take on miaphysite christians, like Armenians, Copts and Ethiopians ? Are they that different in theology compared to Eastern Orthodox churches ?
@wuyldkaat6 жыл бұрын
(we the) Miaphysites believe in the spirit and letter of ecumenical council at ephesus and its original formula of saint Cyril who described the composite nature of Christ(two in one, without mixing confusion or alteration i.e. full man and full God) the chalcedonias excommunicated that faith and considered those that followed it as heretics among whom was st dioscorus who died in exile for refusing to change the words. Many people (including me) believe it's basically a dispute over syntax not semantics ( a variation of words, but not conflicting ideas) it's all a misunderstanding
@al43816 жыл бұрын
@@wuyldkaat God bless you, Mike. I am a Miaphysite Christian myself, always convinced of my beliefs. Recently I have however found it hard to defend St Dioscorus in the light of his treatment of Flavian at the second council of Ephesus, and his defense of Eutyches, who we all consider a heretic. It is not weird that the Chalcedonians think we are monophysites since the first miaphysite who started it all defended Eutyches at the robber council. Also, St Dioscorus was excommunicated based on his actions as the pope of Alexandria, and the only reason why we have Copts today is because they refused to adhere to the newly installed pope by the Melkites. Although I love my church and its rich tradition and abundance of saints and martyrs, I cannot but have doubts whether we are the heretical schismatics who should have reunited with the Chalcedonians long ago.
@wuyldkaat6 жыл бұрын
@@al4381 No one was there to video record what was happening from both sides (Ephesian -Chalcedonian) But I know is that we have a right to look at flavian with suspicion because if not his dogma, then at least his words are innovation when compared to those of the Ephesian creed. He was treated by St. Dioscurus the same way Nestorius was treated by St. Cyril. Maybe he is misunderstood, probably is, I don't know. I have heard Antiochain clergy say tha Nestor was misunderstood himself. Also what I know is that Euthyches was NOT defended, and NOT exonerated. He was told to sign that he agreed upon the Ephesian formula and was told to go back to his monastery without involving himself in theology. On that way out, he was "heard" by one of the diophysiates saying that he did not believed in what he signed. But how would that be interpreted that St. Dioscorus defended and exonerated him? I have no idea. If Dioscurus was to be excommunicated then Cyril should have been too, because they believed the same thing and acted the same way concerning those that did not follow the Ephesian creed. There is a lot more I can say concerning this issue, but I will be writing for 45 minutes to say everything that I must say to defend the Ephesian miaphysites.

Also you are wrong in saying that the Julian Calendar had no leap year. It did have Leap Year, but it did not considered the Century years - which is that every 100 years (divisible by 4), there is supposed to be no Leap Year despite it being a 4th year in the cycle. Unless that 100th year is also divisible by 400. because the Julian Calendar thought that there is exactly 365.25 days in the one year, but the Gregorian calendar corrected this when they learned that, to be more exact, there are only 365.2425 days in one year. I strongly advise you to remake this video.

I admit it is somewhat different since I'm thinking mainly of Eastern Catholic Churches that do that. Would you say there's much liturgical diversity within Orthodoxy, or is that just me fantasizing?
@AthanGreen3374956 жыл бұрын
Holy Khan Eastern Orthodoxy use Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom and use St. Basil's Liturgy for a couple of the Feast Days. Even the "Western Rite" Orthodox use a version of Cryssostom's liturgy. So I would say Eastern Orthodoxy is pretty Uniform regarding liturgical diversity. Armenian and Coptic liturgies, however, are a mute point since they are not in communion with Eastern Orthodoxy.
@seanbeall13116 жыл бұрын
From an Oriental Prthodox believer (albeit a fairly new one), I can say that we are pretty liturgically diverse. If you look up videos of Coptic Armenian, Ethiopian, Eritian, Syrian, and Jacobite liturgies, you’ll see it’s pretty different depending on where you go, at least stylistic wise. That being said, the Eucharist remains the center of them all, and they all are around the same length

Take it from me please, as someone born into Orthodoxy BUT most of his life was enamored with Western churches, wishing he was some High-Church Anglican WASP or similar - study Orthodoxy itself more closely. Read the lives of the saints, research and practice noetic prayer and theosis. Look at videos of, and visit if you can, Orthodox monasteries - then you will find the Truth. Attend a Western Rite Orthodox mass if you want. Always remember though, and I should be the last person saying this, we must look beyond culture and aesthetics and focus on our Lord. (Although of course Orthodoxy is gorgeous and harrowing, but sometimes I just can't get enough of Gothic cathedrals)
@bonniejohnstone6 жыл бұрын
seronymus I come from almost 40 years as a Protestant and 24 years now as an Orthodox Convert. The Gothic Cathedral is magnificent but represents man’s effort to reach heaven. (The High vaulted interior and spires) The Orthodox Cathedral is the reflection of heaven (usually there is a rounded dome representing the heavens with the Icon of Christ over all because it is Christ who reaches down to mankind.). You know this already of course, but to someone like me, everything in Orthodoxy draws me into relationship with the Trinity.
@seronymus6 жыл бұрын
+BonnieJohnstone That's a good point, I vaguely remember reading something like that; someone claimed Gothic architecture was a result of the Scholastic movement. I will say though sometimes our Orthodox cathedrals do seem "warmer" in its design, if that makes sense, because Christ is looking over us and it does have that organic, rounded dome. There's an appeal to both styles yet of course Orthodoxy as we know it always draws me home.

So, it's basically like the place that sends you mad. Hadn't anybody bothered to inform the venerable squabbling hierarchs that the easy way to solve such bureaucratic calendric quandaries is merely to ask for Permit Number A39, as stipulated in the new Circular B65? Sheesh! (And you had to call out your own Asterix reference at 4:35? That's my job, friend. I'd caught on to it from the start of the video :-D ) Jerusalem (ie. Palestine and Jordan) is the only non-Slavic patriarchate to have remained on the Julian calendar. I'm not at all aware of the reason behind it, but, given Antioch (ie. Syria and Lebanon) is on the Revised calendar, it's ultimately very inconvenient having the dates of stationary feast days vary within the Levant, given the strong family ties across borders that exist in that region. The Oriental Orthodox, the non-Chalcedonians, are interesting: they have what approximates three calendars. The Armenians (except for their Old-Calendrist Jerusalem patriarchate) use the Gregorian fully for Easter, moveable feasts, and stationary feast days (like the Finnish Orthodox Church); the Syriacs (again, except for Jerusalem) use what approximates the Revised Julian, and the Copts and Tewahedo Ethiopians, the Coptic/Ethiopian calendar (entirely 'Old-Calendar', like the Julian). The Church of the East (of Iraq) has a formal denominational split on the calendar issue (and other issues). The more globally recognised faction is New Calendar.

I have traveled -- just around the U.S. -- to Orthodox churches of different jurisdictions and different compositions (cradle/convert), and I have never been to one that wasn't welcoming. I have heard they exist (very ethnic ones who don't understand non-Orthodox visitors, or Orthodox from other -- especially adversarial -- countries) but I get the feeling this is more rare all the time, at least here. I know many OCA and Antiochian parishes in America are quite "convert-heavy," fyi...? Please do come...! 😌🙏

Why does the closed captions(should you have them on) say Christ is risen instead of what you said, which is Christ is born (Your conversation between the two Greek priests at around the 5.40 mark)? 21st century, and even with our tech, we still cant get agreement! No wonder there is such a kerfuffle over what translation of the Bible is even close to being correct. There certainly is going to be a difference in understanding when we cannot get things like what was said correct. I really enjoy your videos, and they have caused me to think at length about my own faith, and all that goes along with that. Awesome work, and I thank you for your willingness to give your time and abilities in this endeavour. That you can make me smile as well, that's a wonderful thing as well. To be aware of our own foibles, be they personal or within a particular group sometimes makes hearing information or a message more easily digestible, and helps to put things in perspective. If we cannot laugh at ourselves once in awhile, life can become a rather dour thing! Cheers, and of course as always, Pax. :)
