That's not really the point of the toll houses. It's, firstly, a part of particular judgement. Which is separate from final judgment. Meaning the judgment you go through during your first death. It's the same place our loved ones may reside when we pray for their repentance. Its a foretaste of the final judgment. Also, the bible mentions you still have to account for every deed and utterance.

Have you read in the fathers about the thief and murderer, who lay dying on his death bed, and who simply wept for his sins? He was asked as he was dying why he had become comforted, and he said that he had seen the demons with all his sins piled up on a scale, and his angel said that all he had to offer was the handkerchief the thief used to wipe his tears, but when placed on the other side of the scale, it outweighs his lifetime of sin.

I asked my spiritual Father his thoughts on this video, here’s his response: “I thought that he gave a fairly balance approach there. that's why to say that they haven't been mentioned throughout the history of the church is just wrong but we have to admit that they've been interpreted differently. satan is the prince of the power of the air and there could be some attempts at trying to derail us but the issue that ultimately gets stressed even in Theodora's vision is that any sin that has been sincerely confessed and repented of can no longer be used against us by any demonic forces. to me, that was one of the most important concepts of that whole vision and that's why confession, a truly honest confession, is so important”

@Dovaferret Okay, a couple of things for the ignorant. 1) What Church canons are those anime icons breaking exactly? List me those canons thank you. Especially the canons of the universal Church, not Russian ones (as far as I know, seronymus isn't Russian). 2) That isn't an icon, that's a digital drawing. Icons are used in worship, digital imagery isn't. 3) Never seen an image of Christ as 'anime women.' 4) Admit that you just hate anime and that is all your entire tirade is about, not "Church canons."
@BibleIllustrated5 жыл бұрын
@Dovaferret 1) They're not somehow invalid, they're just local, made for a specific purpose, and that is the proliferation of Catholic imagery in Orthodox churches. Never seen anime icons in Orthodox churches. 2) Why not defend them? Someone expressed their love for the Mother of God in their own artistic style, and it struck a chord with a certain audience. Nothing wrong with that. 3) Proves nothing. I've seen Bzyantine icons of Rasputin, Hitler, Satan, Judas... 4) It seems to me you can't distinguish between an icon used in worship and an image of the Most Holy Theotokos in anime style. What you're doing, in essence, if fighting against any kind of Christian art that isn't strictly regulated by church rules. All depictions of holy persons must be in Byzantine style. All Christian music must be chanting in Byzantine (or similar) style without instruments. There are to be no dances of any kind, as one does not dance in church. Your stance is in complete opposition of the Seventh Ecumenical Council. That is why I asked you to provide me a list of church canons as regards to iconography - you provided a local council and a canon that says that Christ isn't to be depicted as a lamb. Iconography *DOES NOT* have true holiness - it has absolutely no holiness. Any holiness icons have is from the persons they depict, not their style. If you claim that their holiness comes from the style that they're painted in, you're essentially asserting to what Protestants claim about us, that we worship matter, and St. John of Damascus has a couple of choice words to say about that. If we truly belive what you say, that iconography can give true holiness, then truly, an icon of Judas is inherently more holy than an anime image of the Most Holy Theotokos.

@@cononiconium5059 How about JESUS, did he teach about demons questioning us after death? John 6: 53-58 and other sources of church teaching that expound on the necessity of and graces poured out in receiving Christ in the Eucharist; in the toll road of the Aerial Toll Houses where is the "demon" that challenges the soul who avoids communion? I say this because many who embrace this zealotry can fall readily into egotism or fall into despair that they are never worthy to receive because NO ONE can be worthy if you go down the list of every possible sin because the minute you go to confession, you will walk out an probably will have sinned. Scripture and Orthodox Tradition with a Capital "T" emphasizes that no one who lives does not sin (I read the Philokalia too). The problem with the Toll Houses is that if one goes through all the list and says well I avoided all this, I am good to go, now you have committed EGOtism. This mentality has people avoiding Communion and then giving up in despair and the BIBLE and Orthodox teaching is clear that you do not cause your brother to despair but encourage a Life in Christ by LOVE. Only immature Christians who have a slave mentality, focus on avoiding sin because they are worrying about demons. HOW ABOUT avoiding sin and actually going beyond to do real good by LOVING God first? Protestants, Catholics, and other denominations focus on fear, true Orthodox sons and daughters focus on asceticism and real fighting against sin our of true LOVE for God. Many proponents of the myth and of zealotry could care less about their brothers and sisters in Christ, they are into control so that they can build up "their group's / click's" following. Of course many good people believe in Aerial Toll Houses but for them it may be a good tool to help think about sin. However, there are many good lists made by Orthodox Fathers that can be used to examine your behavior and the list of Aerial Toll Houses can be good for that but NOT if it is used for a human to control someone. WE need to focus on controlling ourselves first and foremost. YES, I have read the all the claims pointing to scripture but they are very vague at best and "spirits in the sky" references abound but the Toll Houses bear a remarkable resemblance to the afterlife described in the Egyptian Book of the Dead. The Nicene Creed does not say, and I believe in Aerial Toll Houses either and no Church Cannon Law I know of requires believing in this "dogma." By the way, I have been to Mount Athos many times and I have a close relationship with the monks there and I know that what some of the zealots are teaching in America and Russia and elsewhere that zealotry is embraced is wrong. I am mature enough to know that my relationship with Athos is no big deal before the Lord. I am focused on the Jesus Prayer and keeping it in my mind always because it burns the demons, so as I encounter the demons I do not have anything to worry about and I have too much work to do to correct myself to be bothered with evangelizing the Aerial Toll House "dogma."

Hi, Mr. Bible Illustrated! Sorry I couldn't get back to you before but I'm swamped with school work. Anyway I hope you're feeling better as last time I checked you were sick. Anyway my questions are below: 1. Did God change the law when he cleansed all animals to eat? Why did Christ say he wasn't here to change the law in the Gospel of Matthew when the law changed for Christians? 2. Can man separate the church? If Christ doesn't allow divorce how can he allow schism? Does he view Christians as Christians just some more heretical than others? 3. Are Saint Joachim and Saint Anna the parents of the Theotokos? Who were Christ's literal brothers when he was being called by them and Mary when he was teaching? What is the significance of Joseph, Mary's husband? 4. What about possessions and wealth? Can we have earthly passions like playing instrument so long as it does not interfere with our faith? 5. Does God hate all serpents? Will they eat dust after Christ's return like Revelations says? Are they inherently evil? 6. Can you pray for me? I find it very difficult to find a way out of my sinful ways and because I have no one I can really go to about this, I have to be bombarded with temptation and I have no clue how to deal with it? If anyone has tips on how to stay away from temptations please recommend some to me. Thank you for answering me over Instagram, sir! I really appreciate it! Have a good night!

if I may, i tried to answer number 3 for you. According to the Protoevangelium of James (the main source about the early life of the Theotokos, came from about the 2nd to the 3rd Century, thus the first written proof of what the Early Christians actually believe from within the Holy Traditions, especially the Holy Oral Traditons), Sts. Joachim and Anna were the literal parents of the Theotokos. They were righteous, but for a long time, they didn't have any children, so the two lamented this situation before God, and the Lord shown forth his mercy. Angels appeared to St.Joachim and St.Anna, announcing that St.Anna will bear a child. St.Anna gave birth then to the Theotokos, and the two gave her unto the Temple of Jerusalem, in accordance to the promise they make before the Lord. there, the Theotokos live until she was betrothed to St.Joseph, and after this, the Nativity of Christ unfolds. This is what I know about the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos. Hope this helps, and Glory to God for all things !
@Gjergji3116 жыл бұрын
1. God did not change the Law concerning eating unclean animals, circumcision, sacrifice, etc. He fulfilled it. This is evident from when Christ says, “I have not come to abolish the Law, but to fulfill it” (Mt. 5:17). The Law was supposed to mark the Jewish people out as the people from whom the Messiah would come. In the Incarnation, Jesus as the Messiah was the only one to perfectly keep the Law and thus fulfilled it. 2. A distinction must be made between difference senses of “Church.” In one sense, the Church is the Mystical Body of Christ, the community of all those who are saved. In this sense, the Church is completely pure and indivisible. In another sense, the Church is the visible institution which Christ founded, made up of both saints and sinners. This institution can be fractured in different ways on account of bad actors. 3. By the ancient tradition of the Church the parents of the Theotokos are held to be Sts. Joachim and Anna. This belief dates back to about the second century. We don’t have the birth certificate of the Theotokos, but there’s no good reason to doubt her parentage. In Koine Greek, there are no words for “step-brother” or “cousin,” so the fact that the Gospels report that the people in Galilee knew of “Jesus’ brothers” doesn’t actually tell us much. By the ancient tradition of the Church St. James (a.k.a. Jacob) is one of the “brothers” of Jesus who believes in Him after the Resurrection. St. Joseph has great significance within the Church. He is the caretaker and legal father of Jesus. Despite knowing that he is not the father of Mary’s child, St. Joseph accepts to not break his betrothal to Mary and take care of her child, as we are told in the Gospel of Matthew. We do not know that Joseph and Mary were ever married. St. Matthew traces his succession of Jesus from David through Joseph, because, as I mentioned above Joseph is Jesus’ father by law. 4. The Church does not forbid believers from holding earthly possessions. Early in the Apostolic era the Church in Jerusalem decided to hold all things in common. This did not work out well in the slightest, as is evidenced by St. Paul’s multiple calls to gather a collection for the Church in Jerusalem (e.x. 1 Cor. 16:1-4). Some of the Saints of the Church (e.g. Sts. Constantine and Helen) were fabulously wealthy. 5. God does not hate serpents. They are His creatures, along with everything else in creation. The punishment of “the serpent” in Genesis refers to the devil. That is, unless you are aware of speaking serpents. 6. Please pray for me as well. We must struggle against temptation until we don’t have to. Of ourselves, we can do very little, but God has promised us His grace. Pray to Him in earnest and struggle with all your will against the passions, He will take care of the rest in the long run.

@Gjergji311 Fantastic educated reply. Thank you. I would also add that while Christ said essentially it is very difficult to be rich and saved, it is not impossible because God is all-good and indeed there are many wealthy saints from both West and East, although those saints who lived in poverty by choice obviously are rewarded more in the next life.
@Gjergji3116 жыл бұрын
seronymus Thank you for the kind words! Your reply reminded me that there are several precept/counsel distinctions in the New Testament, wealth being one (i.e. the precept is don’t be greedy or unjust in your business and this is required for all, and the counsel being if you are able give up your wealth and dedicate yourself wholly to God) and marriage being the other big one.

I'm not "Bible Illustrated" but maybe I can help. 1. The Original Law was Exodus 20-31. Israelites kept the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20) so as to be able to participate in the actual heart of the Law, which was liturgical and covenantal sacrifices of anamnesis (mystical re-entry/re-presentation) into the Exodus events of deliverance from the idolatry of Egypt. After the Golden Calf incident (Exodus 32), symbolic and penitential Laws were given to the Israelites, called "the works of the Law," which kept help to keep Israel quarantined from the gentile nations and their idolatry. These Laws include which foods are permissible to eat vs. non-permitted food, cleanness vs. uncleanness, new sacrificial feasts and details (Aaron, on the Day of Atonement, has to sacrifice a bull for himself [Golden Calf - wink, wink]), as well as other things. These secondary Laws were to teach the people to depend and yearn for God's help, His Divine Presence, which is Grace, and the working of this Grace with us, which the Israelites didn't have. It oriented them to wait and hope for the Lord Jesus, the Promised Messiah to come, and there is much symbolism that points to Jesus, I would argue. These secondary Laws eventually culminated in the Book of Deuteronomy (literally titled "The Secondary Law"), wherein there is no Divine Theophany and God delegates Authority to Moses to make some bad Laws, which even the Prophets call bad (Ezekiel 20:25). Remember, too, that in the Old Covenant, Israelites were represented by Moses (their Covenant Mediator) and God delegated Authority to represent Him to the angels...Israelites, therefore, did not have a direct Covenant or Communion with God (explained in Galatians). That's one of the many reasons why Christ's Incarnation is so important! The answer to your questions, then, in light of the above background information, is that Jesus reaffirms the original, primary Law by abolishing the penitential, symbolic Secondary Laws, which, again, were merely to quarantine Israel because of the sin of the Golden Calf. Therefore, He doesn't change or abolish the true Old Law...He purifies it back to its original condition and then intensifies this, fulfilling it in this intensification, as well as within His Person as the Messiah, since He perfectly fulfilled it. Only the Apostolic Christian can truly keep this Law, since they are in Christ and His Holy Spirit. 2. Jesus is the Divine Bridegroom Messiah. The Church is His Bride. According to the interesting way in which you framed you question, He would never divorce His Bride. Bishops, according to St. Ignatios of Antioch, are Christ among us (I would argue that they are Sacraments of His Authority). Therefore, Bishops are married to their Eparchy wherein lies their canonical Authority. A Bishop could excommunicate Members of his Church if their actions warrant this, in the hopes that this medicine leads them to repentance and re-inclusion into the Body, in health. But the Bishop can't just divorce his wife, the Church of his Eparchy. Schism, though, is 99% the action of a Bishop against the rest of the Bishops or against a higher Bishop, such as a Metropolitan or Patriarch. And the Church is both local and universal. Therefore, according to the universal angle, the question then becomes: does Jesus simultaneously want a divorce from his Bride but doesn't want a divorce from his bride? This is complicated, especially since, in the Church of the past, the people often couldn't help but follow their Bishop, at least if large distance was part of the issue (they couldn't just pack up and move away to join the correct Bishops or Bishop in another part of the world). The way I look at it is like this: if a more localized Church, in question, is Apostolic, that is that It has true Bishops, Priests, and all the Sacraments, then it's the Church. This Church, and the others from which, or of which, it is separated are both the Church. The issue lies with weakness on the part of men here, as well as things such as politics, linguistic confusion, etc. Wherever the Sacraments are offered, there is the Church. I feel the opposite opinion would be arguing that the devil destroyed much of the universal Church, many souls are lost, and God permitted this. Notice how I, earlier, used the word "Apostolic." I regards to protestants, who do not have Apostolic Churches, I believe that they do have Baptism. Because of Baptism, I argue that they are Apostolic Christians, a part of our Church, according to the universal angle, whether they like it or not, but that they lack the fullness of the True Churches. They are saved in this Baptism, and are in the process of being saved, only if they are totally ignorant that they are lacking the fullness of the Apostolic Churches and the rest of Her Sacraments and Tradition. If they know enough, but resist the Apostolic Churches, then their salvation is in jeopardy. I'm open to correction of this, though.

As a Catholic, who accepts that works are meritorious - though only because they cooperate with divine grace - I'm surprised that the aerial toll houses aren't found in Catholicism, but in Eastern Christianity. I'm even more surprised that purgatory is a widely Catholic belief and not an Orthodox one. Purgatory seems to me to have little to do with the doctrine of merit, as purgatory is simply the preparation of a soul judged righteous. Preparation of the soul to be made fit for heaven. St. John speaks, first, of sin that is not deadly - that is not cause of damnation. And then he says that "nothing unclean shall enter heaven". Moreover, Our Lord commands us to be "perfect as Our Heavenly Father is perfect". Therefore purgatory doesn't exist for the sake of judgement, but of purgation - cleaning a righteous soul - so it may be perfected. This, it seems to me, fits with the Eastern theme of God as the divine physician, the doctor who heals us, rather than, merely, the judge who declares righteous and unrighteous. The toll houses seem very legalistic - surprisingly Western. And yet we, Catholics, have the more remedial doctrine. It seems to me. Do Orthodox believe God cleans the righteous but not totally perfected soul after they die? Do they believe anyone who has any attachment to sin does not need a purgatory?

I'm a medieval historian, amateur I admit but I know the most of anyone I know online or IRL, and as much as I adore Western aesthetics part of why I remain Orthodox besides the true mysticality of course is that before the Schism you don't really see the Bishops of Rome as acting anything higher than Patriarchs, Papal claims are essentially the product of the state of Western Europe only having Rome as a major Christian city in the Pentarchy to answer to and then politics from the Franks and other actors came to play...what a mess. I could ramble on and I don't mean any offense of course, just on an empirical scholarly level I can really only endorse Western Rite Orthodoxy for, well, the West. Perhaps semi ironically nearly all of the popes before the Schism are also Orthodox saints did you know that?
@badgerlordpatrick64936 жыл бұрын
@@seronymus Of course. We share calendars up roughly until the Great Schism. In fact, we venerate your saints, too (even Mark of Ephesus, I think, though I don't know how that works...). I actually feel rather the opposite. To put it shortly, I go to a "good" Catholic church. Yet our Mass pales in comparison with any chanted Divine Liturgy. Our Ukrainian Church is very humble. I've been there only twice, and I still remember how beautiful the chant is. I think First Vatican Council's decree of papal infallibility was cut short in its definition due to the Italian Civil War - and for the worse. Papal infallibility needs to be better defined. We hardly even know what counts as an infallible statement, or its conditions. Popes wrote many things, some of which contradict future popes. Inter Caetera contradicts In Plurimis on slavery, for instance. Missale Romanum contradicts Quo Primum. What has the preeminence? I honestly do not know for sure. Much clarity is needed. I thank God for modern times; they have laid low the Pope temporally. Maybe the sex abuse crisis will humble our Pontiff enough that we can finally put the imperious bravado of the centuries aside and get at what the Pope's actual role is.
@PVCGunita6 жыл бұрын
@@badgerlordpatrick6493 ^ Honestly I kind of agree with that. Catholic here too. Don't get me wrong, I also have deep and profound respect with Orthodox and we share a lot in common. But not that I want a debate, but from what I researched and found, yes the pope was in a sense equal with the Orthodox patriarch (of Antioch), and even that of Alexandria (pretty sure the bishop there was called a pope too? Coptic). Nonetheless, during councils, many bishops usually ask the bishop of Rome for final validity, and had great influence. Then somewhere down the line of history, both sides went haywire and the schism of 1054 happened. And in terms of papal infallibility... I do think that it's a rare occasion. Just because the pope says stuff doesn't mean everything he says or writes is dogma. I do think the general public is has falsely viewed what the term papal infallibility actually is. I think it's also the background of the pope, having viewed throughout history with a great responsibility and position for not just the Catholic Church, but the global world entirely. Don't get me wrong, I'll stay being Catholic till the end, but yes, there are times when the bishop who leads our church can sometimes seem unqualified and unsuited for such a role. But then again, God didn't choose people who are expected to be leaders. I think that's also a view that probably the laity and the clergy should review, in both ways. We should realize that the people who lead us in the church are also fallible humans, but are elected to lead the Church to the best of their ability, morality, and judgement, and that the clergy (not saying all of them are like this) should also remember and realize that they aren't mighty themselves, as well as that they aren't alone in this journey we call life. The laity has much more power than they realize and the clergy has more responsibility than they realize.

@mariusfilip18475 жыл бұрын
@Phil Invoking the rarity of Papal Infallibility exercise is something I hear a lot from our Roman brothers and sisters - in an attempt to suggest that somehow it's not such a big deal. I disagree - if we Christians have any dogmatic sense left, we have to agree that a dogma *is* a big deal -because it's a dogma. That is, a doctrine which must be accepted in its entirety, not a theologoumenon that can be accepted or rejected depending on personal view or background. Papal Infallibility: if it is true then it is true on its own merits of being divinely revealed truth of clearly traceable apostolic origin and not a later extrapolation. As such, it has to satisfy all the three marks of catholicity ("since alway, everythwere, by all") and it has to be shown that it's been a companion of Church life from the very beginning (in some form or another). Papal Infallibility is not a minor thing *exactly* because it is dogma. Moreover, Vatican I *explicitly* anathemises anyone who objects against it - thus making any conscientious opponent a heretic. This includes all the Orthodox plus pretty much the whole rest of Christendom. Either the dogma is true and in such case the Orthodox are heretics (and not "so close that its takes little to achieve full communion" as the Cathechism claims) or the dogma is false and in such case those who produced it, promoted it and believe in it as a dogma are blatantly in error (which boils down to some form of heresy, too). In my opinion this dogma need to be abandoned because it is simply not true. It is simply a mere extrapolation of the role of St. Peter and the bishops or Rome through the Church history. Taken as dogma - is a falsehood, plain and simple (and I have yet to see a Roman Catholic who can defend it beyond the usual "not a big deal, cultural difference, used rarely, etc"; usually they turn silent in face of even superficial analysis). I believe the Roman Church has to abandon that dogma. Alas, this will never happen because this would mean that the body that proclaimed it was in error - thus admitting the Roman Church is not the Bride which Christ promised that the gates of hell shall not prevail against. Sincerely,

They are. Death and judgment is a fearful thing and any attempt at hiding this Apostolic tradition of the Church is of the evil one, who wants to lull you into a false sense of comfort. The question is not whether or not tollhouses are real - they are - the question is do you let this fear lead you into a state of despondency, or let it kindle a flame of zeal leading you to a deeper prayer and confessional life. Remember, all sins that have been confessed and have received absolution will not be counted against you at the hour of your death. Pray, confess and pray some more. This is the correct response to the toll house teaching. Not, on one extreme, pretending they don't exist; nor on the other extreme, falling into despondency. We fear judgment and hope in our Lords great and abundant mercy.

One important absolute to deal in when speaking about the scripture is that god is not, and has never been a deliverer of fear, god is a deliverer of power, love and a sound mind, the punishments of the damned are of the concern of those who are not even concerned of them to begin with, WE as christians have rejected damnation through Christ, and by extension traded it for ressurection and salvation. We are of God's kingdom and are destined for no less than absolute freedom from the chains of torment. Always remember that where God provides us with conviction and awareness of our misdeeds, Satan seeks to invert these tools into fear, guilt, and nihilism. Build yourself in Christ, and seek him in all things, and by doing so, understand that you are of his kingdom and reject Satan's message of fear.

The whole concept of Toll houses is foreign to me, and I like most Romanians was born in the Orthodox Church. Closest I can think of is the idealistic belief of the "wheel of fortunes" that some people have, which boils down to if you suffer in this life you will be rewarded in the next and vice versa. There is another similar mantra in which we all carry a cross and in this life we can choose to give up bits of it to make it easier to carry but in the next life we most cross a river so if we give up too much we don't cross and as such don't reach the kingdom of god. Though both of these beliefs are metaphors and not church Dogma and are usually used as tools by priests to help common folk understand concepts like the Judgement better. Is is just a Serbian thing or do Russians and Greeks also have it?
@seronymus6 жыл бұрын
The tollhouses and similar beliefs can be shown to originate partially from gnostic heresies like Bogomilism and pagan folklore from the early medieval period that crept into the faith by common folk who mixed up faith and/or priests who didn't receive a great education.

The judgement of the demons is not the judgement of Christ. They accuse the soul of being indebeted to them, by having sinned according to their suggestion, and our guardian angel proves them wrong by showing our good works, our repentance, the sins that the sacrament of confession forgave, etc. The soul of an Orthodox Christian can very much be found guilty of being indebted to the demons, and there is nothing that can be done, because none of us deserves salvation. However, I think that the toll houses need to be understood as being a "last stand" of the demons against us, and the result to be the particular judgement itself, rather than an elaborate trek that is actually contained in "time". As for it being "dogma"... The scriptures say that we fight against the demonic powers that are in the air. I do not think that more needs to be said. If the scriptures do not give a further elaboration on "how" this struggle against the demons beneath Heaven takes place, we shouldn't try to define it further. Either way, the teaching is found as early as St. Cyril of Alexandria, who gave a whole homily about it. I believe in the aerial toll houses because my catechism says they exist, but while I recognize this is not a dogmatic teaching, calling it a heresy when it has been present in the Church for centuries and centuries strongly annoys me, especially as this seems to be a problem in America alone for some reason.

I hope you have, there is really no greater gift. The entire point of it whether they exist or not is that any sin confessed and repented of (even if completely unknown to you, because we are in fact not perfect) holds no power over us. It should really change the way you look at the church and confession. The church is called the hospital of souls for a reason. You shouldn't go to confession guilt-ridden and ashamed mumbling to yourself you sinned, you should be running there happily at the mere shadow of sin for God's mercy, because He does give it. It makes you feel unashamed in telling everything you have done or even the things you're sure you didn't do but still felt doubtful about. You go for healing, not for punishment and that is what you get.

In Orthodoxy and Catholicism there is a distinction between public revelation and private revelation. Public revelation--for example, scripture--is Dogmatic, but public revelation ended with the death of the last apostle, St. John the Theologian. Everything we must believe has already been revealed, and is only clarified throughout the history of the Church by councils and such. Private revelation is never dogmatic, and there's lots of reasons why it can be wrong. For one thing, the people who receive visions or such might fail to understand, interpret, or remember what happened. Another reason is that although they could still be holy individuals, they might be receiving visions from the demons "taking the form of an angel of light". Hope this helps. Christ is Risen!

Catholic here. How do you feel about the Toll Houses as imagery for those who are already judged righteous but are not sanctified enough to be in the presence of God. I remember a story about St. Seraphim of Sarov intuiting that two souls were having trouble making it through the toll houses so he immediately took on extra prayer and acetic labor to help them. I ask because with this nuance, it’s really more like the Catholic view - particular judgement is already accomplished and found to be a friend of God, but not so perfect yet so as to be ready to see Him face to face. Also, merit shouldn’t be a terrible concept. God often shows mercy for the sake of the righteousness of someone else. “The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” It doesn’t have to be understood transactionally, or divorced from the famous St. Augustine line “when you crown the merits of the Saints, you crown your own gifts.” So benefiting from another’s merits is itself a manifestation of the mercy of God.

I can give you an extensive list of both greek, slav and other tradition saints that believe in the tollhouses, but its way harder to find a list of saints that don't believe in it
@BibleIllustrated Жыл бұрын
Not really. Lots of Western saints believed in in purgatory, and a lot of saints had post-mortem visions that do not align with the tollhouses.

@BibleIllustrated you're wrong. They're dogmatic in Orthodoxy. This video is wrong. They're mentioned by name in the Akathist to St John the Baptist, the life of St Anthony the Great, in Homily 22 of St Macarius of Egypt, and elsewhere

very helpful and well done. This was one of the major stumbling blocks for me in terms of conversion, but I eventually came to the same conclusion. Also.. I subscribed :)

Thoughts on “The Orthodox Teaching of the Soul After Death” by St Anthony’s Monastery? It’s quite robust I don’t think this video gives a particularly adequate account of this teaching. Particularly with regards to owing debts to demons; something which basically no proponent of the tollhouses ever said

What about Serafim's Rose "Soul after death" ?
@BibleIllustrated3 жыл бұрын
What of it? :-)

I apologise for my bad english. So, Serafim mentions a lot of saints who write or experienced this toolhouses: St. John Maximovich, St. Ignatius Briancianinov, St. Theophanes the Locked, St. the Great Martyr Eustratia (4th century), St. Niphon of Constantia (4th century), St. Simeon the Mad for Christ of Emesa (6th century), St. John the Merciful, Patriarch of Alexandria (7th century), St. Simeon of the Wonderful Mountain (7th century), St. Columba (asleep in 597) ), the founder of the monastery on the island of Jonah in Scotland, St. Boniface, "Anglo-Saxon apostle of the Germans" (8th century), Theofil of Alexandria (in Patericon) and even St. John, the one who wrote,, The ladder of the Divine ascent" Also, Toolhouses are present in Filocalia (Philokalia), at St. Diadoh of Foticeea. I dont think that it is ok to contradict in a pure rational way something that during hundreads of years was a fact in our Church, something that was said by a lot of orthodox mystics and theologians.

My point is that it is strange that great intellectuals and mystics like St. Ignatius Briancianinov, St. Theopanes the Locked, St. John Maximovitch or Father Serafim Rose said that the existence of tollhouses is real and we, the new generation, try to contradict them. I think it is better to trust these Saints and Fathers than controversial personalities like Lazar Puhalo.

@@tudorgoicea7029 It isn't a dogma, saints aren't idols, and a lot of saints you mentioned in your initial post don't describe the tollhouses as I defined them in this video (or even called them tollhouses).
@tudorgoicea70293 жыл бұрын
I know that it isn't a dogma and I know that Saints aren't idols. But I think that something which was said by a group of Saints (not just one or two) should be considered true or, at least, should make us to trust their common opinion more than the opposite one. The Fathers who lived in last centuries (Ignatius, Theophanes, John Maximovich, Serafim Rose etc.) even called them ,,tollhouses", but I don't consider that this is the most important thing. The idea of tollhouses exists in the older writings of the Saints that I mentioned in the first post (actually, they are mentioned by Serafim Rose in "Soul after death") even if it is not named with the word "tollhouses". Of course, all the Saints mentioned insist on the fact that we should not take these tollhouses literally, but that doesn't mean that they don't exist. I apologise again for my english. Christ is risen!
