When I was a very young schoolboy attending Belmont School I was used to stealing the sweetest apply in a nearby orchard, The tallest boy in our school who was 6ft 2.5 inches tall would put me on his shoulders and get me up to the lowest branches of the apple trees and I would do the rest. In those days we wore short corduroy trousers with lining, I would make a hole in the pockets of my trousers and fill the apples in to my pockets, after a short time all the apples would fill all around my legs held in place by the lining. I needed a good strong belt to help hold my trousers in place, When I got back down from the tree I would not be able to walk so my tall friend would carry on his shoulders, and off we would run to safety then share out those apples with all the gang from my class.

@Charlie Fury Not a few apples, 2 trouser legs full on each apply steeling mission, in those days this was a dangerous thing to do, if the owners found out, all hell would break loose, our young reputation would be destroyed for a few months until people forgot

It has always baffled my mind as to why the irish who have historically have had a very low standard of living as compared to let's say England or America yet have outpaced them in terms of height. In school we were told that low standard of living = shorter stunted heights. The irish seemed to prove otherwise!!! Enlighten me anyone please!!!

I don’t think that it is any way true that the Irish are taller than other Northern European races Some individuals are extraordinarily tall by virtue of disease I.e growth hormone excess,Marfan’s syndrome etc

The Celts were taller than the other peoples near to them in Europe, and their descendants presumably inherited this genetic trait. Julius Caesar remarked on the height of the Britons, and I believe there is archaeological evidence of tall Celtic people from remains, although don't quote me on that last part, I am remembering stuff I read from years ago. The Gauls and Britons towered over the Romans. Nutrient intake has something to do with physical robustness, but genetics have a large part to play as well.

Life for sure is more expensive for people who are that tall. Taller than average women have only a bit better time of it when cross dressing with cheaper to buy off the rack pants instead of a skirt ever since the year 1969 when off the rack skirts started getting shorter and shorter as time went on. Imagine being 6 foot 7 or taller while being a man. Would be tempting to go out and buy a woman's formal skirt to wear in places where nobody knows your name anyway. At least then you would have less chance of say having your ear blown off after saying you don't have any cigarettes to share while somebody only wants to mug you instead. What could be the harm in that when being a tourist who is travelling alone? When it comes to us taller than average women cross dressers some paranoid minded woman right after making out in public with someone else then might start assuming that we are stalking them while offering us false accusations after only feeling amused while looking on. Happened to me once.
