The other name for the tape I prefer to use is Washi tape, which is rice paper tape. Normal painters tape as shown in the video is around 0.12mm thick, while washi is 0.8mm thick.
Disclaimer: Please, DO NOT USE things super adhesive like duct tape, box tape etc, you will potentially damage your PCB by pulling components off, and if that doesnt happen, you will be left with nasty pieces of tape and adhesive residue; ALSO please do not use conductive tapes, you are asking for short circuits. Please, use your head when applying this mod, its low risk with tape that is deigned to be easily removed, but if you have to ask if a certain tape you have is too sticky, its probably no good for this mod.
Here is how I found the mod. I was trying the AI03 flex cut taping, but found it didn't make much sound difference when JUST taping the cuts in one of my boards, so I used wider tape and got a NOTICEABLE difference. so I taped a 5degree build to eliminate variables and it blew my mind, thing has no flex cuts and it still worked.

I went ahead and bought masking tape after watching this video, promptly applied it to my my DZ60 PCB in a tofu60 case, and I can confirm it does add a bunch of thockiness to it! Switches sound deeper for some reason, and it was particularly noticeable for me as I use Boba U4Ts with a brass plate which has sounded really high pitched for me so far as I was building it, and this tape mod has changed everything for the better for me. Thank you so much for this! I was looking for that last little thing to make this keyboard truly my own, and this is it! Sound wise it's just perfect now, thanks again and have a great day!

Love this mod! I can finally end the constant tinkering (as fun as it was) with my gh60 trying to chase a tasteful, consistent sound profile. I poured my own silicone dampener for the PSD60 case, switched to a polycarb plate, added foam between plate and pcb, and used o-rings for the side standoffs; yet still had a bit of hollowness in row 2 and the tape mod fixed it!

Just did that to a board that is known to be "pingy" right out of the box (Corsair K65 RGB Mini). I had already added foam to the bottom of the case which got rid of a significant amount of the ping, particularly from the keys with stabs on them. Added 3 layers of painters tape to the back of the PCB and it suddenly became a case of Keyboards: Return of the Ping (it was actually even louder than the ping when the board was stock with no foam inside). Quickly removed it and the board now comes back to being a quiet typer again.

Okay after thinking about this mod I’ve come up with a theory about how this mod works. When I looked up on Blacksimon’s keyboard google doc about sound I noticed something about pcb thickness. Thicker pcbs tend to have much deeper sound. My guess would be that adding tape absorbs that pcb to air/case vibration, especially when done with soft tape, leading to a similar effect, especially since the tape is making direct contact. I might be entirely wrong here but right now I can’t think of any other explanation.
@kanyegrande4312
@kanyegrande4312 3 жыл бұрын
@@oTEMPE5To that’s an observation if I ever seen one. I guess if we were to test this we’d have to first test the pcb out of the case to account for case acoustics though. Another thought could be that since the tape is connected via adhesive, and doesn’t have nearly as a secure connection to the pcb compared to simply having a thicker pcb, that might play a role into it. Similar to how the ball bearing mod doesn’t fully replicate the sound of a pole bottom out switch in the same way since the vibrations aren’t transferred as well between the ball bearing and the switch unless it’s friction fit in. I’ve done the mod with packaging tape before, and noticed similar results compared to using a paper based tape, so that also leads me to believe that the adhesive plays a role into it.

After all that, and getting the thocciest switches out there, I still didn't like the sound of it all that much. And then I went ahead and put masking tape under the PCB. Boom. That was the last little bit that I needed. God damn my keyboard sounds so much better now lol.

Currently with no PE foam it just sounds muted due to the ungodly amount of flex cuts. Kinda wish they sold different pcbs with less flex cuts because not everyone wants them but I digress lol.

@liturgies
@liturgies 2 жыл бұрын
keybored made a video in which he analyzed differnt foam thickness and acoustics and he says that thicker foams allow higher frequencies to pass through and thinner foams allow more bassy freqs to pass through so applying that here would mean thinner tape = slighly deepr sound. tempest himself says that he too believes that thicker doesn't equal deeper, but potentially the otehr way around. TL;DR: washi is deeper sounding than painters because its thinner.
