To the average tongue, the color "red" doesn't have a flavor or a smell. But color can affect how we perceive the world in so many ways - including how things taste and smell!

My ex wife loved green peppers for one reason, and one reason only... they "Taste green." That's it. She thought green peppers were the only thing she'd ever tasted that tasted 'right', as far as their color went, and the satisfaction that gave her was enough to put them at the top of her food list.

I have a faint memory of tasting something that I thought tasted exactly like its color, I just don't remember what it was, but I think it was orangish and I'm pretty sure it wasn't healthy, probably some junk food. But, I _can_ see how I would get extra enjoyment by finding something that _did_ taste like its color. Pure satisfaction.

Not totally related, but once I made a meal in which people were blindfolded and when people started to eat, we were going around with a thing full of nitrogen and spices. (so the nitrogen was going back to gas with the smell of the spices in it) People were tasting the meal with those spices even if there was none in the dishes. Eating is such an interesting science.

Yeah, I think I remember reading somewhere that most of your sense of taste's actually majorly influenced by your sense of smell... Which can help explain how...particular respiratory illnesses can dampen (if not temporarily disable) your sense of taste. (For example, 'cause a mucus-clogged nose can't smell anything.)

Color is our first clue about a fruit's ripeness and health. A green orange is technically edible, but it's also very tart. And when we eat a green orange, we expect that tartness. So drinking a green flavored orange drink might cause us to perceive more tartness than is there, and thus we assume it's lime. Cherry is a sweeter taste, and a green colored cherry drink may taste like it should be orange, because we still taste more tartness, but not as much as we might with actual orange or lime flavoring. The reverse is also true. A lime drink colored red will taste sweeter because we perceive it as "ripe," and thus might be mistaken for orange or even cherry. Orange being in the middle, it's the color whose flavor is likely easiest to pick out properly. If it seems sweeter, it must be cherry. If it seems more tart, it must be lime. If it tastes like it matches, it's orange.

That flavor test works well when you expect a flavor to be artificial, as with the drinks. I'd argue no specific color apple or pear has a bearing on my preference of it. I had no expectation of a different flavor of an apple based on its color until I tried that new variety of apple. I would even say if I were to have any bias in flavor preference, because I like strawberries, cherries, and cranberries, you would think I should like a red apple more. But instead, I prefer Golden Delicious. A yellow apple. Maybe if this test had been done coloring natural flavors instead of artificial, such as a juice? Or applied to a sauce?

Colors can affect the way we perceive the world, and researchers have shown that they can make us more likely to mistake a drink for one that matches its color. In a 2007 study, researchers gave 124 drinks to 11 participants to sample. The subjects' task was to identify the flavor of each drink on a multiple-choice answer sheet. Colors play a big role in our perception of smell and taste, and scientists have shown that they can help us identify what we're smelling or tasting more quickly and accurately. One study found that the source of a smell doesn't have to be the same color as the person who's giving it to you. Colors can play a big role in how we perceive the world around us, and scientists are exploring whether or not our brains choose what signals to pay attention to. For example, researchers have suggested that by shifting our attention, visual information from an object's color might make us notice more "redness" or "green-ness" in its flavor. And that could possibly shift our perception of its taste.

We made the kids 'green eggs and ham' one night since that's what they wanted. Added a little blue to the eggs since yellow + blue = green, except it made the eggs sort of aqua. My guess is that the mind compares the current situation (including all senses) with the ones it has stored. I mean sometimes when you remember things you can also remember some kind of smell associated with that situation so I think the brain just takes all the information it has and makes its best guess. Just like AI our minds are not perfect and if you present a situation that has not been learned yet its more guessing than everything else

I think it might be more about accessing more completely certain flavors/effects when certain colors are present. Like poisonous berries or plants are often a different color than what is expected from edible ones. I'd be curious about the brain connections though as color is more or less 1 dimensional but flavor is a combination of on and off switches of stimuli.

I don't know the flavour of strawberry. Like, I can't imagine it. And a drink can't taste like a strawberry because it doesn't have the texture of a strawberry. So if I got a red coloured drink I would probably guess it's strawberry because it tastes like something and it looks a tiny bit like strawberry. So, does the colour affect how I perceive the taste, or do I just not know the taste well enough to identify it correctly? I probably wouldn't think the lime flavour and orange flavour are the same when I get them in a red drink, but I would probably call them both strawberry 🤔

3:28 are you serious? How is it not clear why this happens? Our brains have been primed to associate different fruit/foods with different tastes. Why would my brain expect blue to be strawberry flavored if I already know that strawberries are red and everything strawberry flavored is red? This just seems like common sense. I'm glad we have science to back it up but still... I remember an old Hesston Blumenthal documentary where a crunching sound was played through headphones while people ate uncrunchy food and experienced weird sensations as their brain expected the food to be crunchy. This was 15 years ago. Are there not any other, more exciting discoveries?
