The Lilac Bolete (Boletus separans) may be the best tasting wild mushroom that you can forage. Join me as I show you what a typical foraging trip looks like, how you can use taste to identify boletes, and how to identify several species of edible bolete mushrooms in the Eastern United States.
The species highlighted in this video are:
The Train Wrecker (Neolentinus lepideus)
Edibility: Questionable, some people report that it is edible when young and tender
Shaggy Stalked Bolete (Aureoboletus betula)
Edibility: Edible, slight citrus taste
Frost's Bolete (Exsudoporus frostii)
Edibility: Edible, slightly sour taste, almost like a tart apple
Lilac Bolete (Boletus separans)
Edibility: Edible, a choice edible with a strong mushroom flavor
Jackson's Slender Amanita (Amanita jacksonii)
Edibility: Edible, but not for beginners
The gear I use:
-Opinel Foraging Knife: www.amazon.com/Opinel-OP01252...

There was a guy who ate amanita phaloides. He sweared that it was the most delicious mushroom what he ever ate. He doesn't want to believe that he shouldn't have eaten that. It took a while to convince him to go to the hospital.

These amanita jacksonii have popped up right in my front yard before and when I realized that the mycelium would still be there I waited until the rain a few days ago. Sure enough when I went outside to check I had several lovely specimens with caps the size of my hand! They are so beautiful! We checked our woods and found several amanitas growing such as the peach fly agaric! We harvested and took pictures and spore sprints. Such lovely specimens. Also out here in the peidmont Louisburg NC.

I'm almost positive I found these growing in the Walmart parking lot about 3or 4 weeks ago. There were dozens maybe hundreds of them. All popping up in the mulch. When I googled them it came up as some kind of iodine mushroom? i didn't try to eat it. But I have been seeing these all over the Charleston Summerville SC area lately

Nice! The bolete species that I showed in this video are all pretty easy to identify, but I would recommend getting a little bit familiar with the ones that will upset your stomach first. We only have a handful of them here in the Southeast, but it is definitely a confidence booster to know which ones will make you sick. The online Bolete filter is a free resource that is a great place to get started with learning Boletes and is something that I often use to key them out. Here is a link to that resource: boletes.wpamushroomclub.org/ Best of luck!

So far so. Bitterness or pepper taste does not necessarily bar a shroom from consumption. They do imply caution though. Cinnabar Red Chanterelles have a nice pepper taste but they fry down and become very tasty.

Hi! Does anyone know about the" chitin" controversy? Both mushrooms and insects contain chitin; said to be indigestible as well as poisonous to us. Weird.
@glieseonlife
@glieseonlife Жыл бұрын
It is a very interesting topic that I believe has a lot of ongoing research. I am by no means an expert, but my understanding is that humans potentially lack the enzyme "chitinase" which is required to breakdown chitin. Or at least, we do not have a large enough quantity of it in our gut to properly break down large amounts of chitin. I am not too familiar with the notion of it potentially being "poisonous", but I do know that a Western diet frowns upon the consumption of insects which could be a potential source of such controversy. Regardless, I would almost never advise anyone to consume raw wild mushrooms simply because some mushrooms, such as morels, have toxins that need to be broken down through cooking.
@thekarencrowe
@thekarencrowe Жыл бұрын
@@glieseonlife Hey ...let me belabor the point ,as the one who I heard declare their vehement warning against consuming chitens SAID " that cooking does nothing to render Chitin digestible". A lost cause! I will eat mushrooms . I will not eat any more insects though they may be in some form present in my mushrooms. Have a great one!
