Pre-tax contributions may help reduce income taxes in your pre-retirement years while after-tax contributions may help reduce your income tax burden during retirement. Both have their perks but you can also save for retirement outside of a retirement plan, such as in an individual investment account or employing the services of a retirement planner/investment advisor.

Increasing taxation will not grow the economy as they said during the election. Discriminating against pensioners is unforgivable. Calling a national emergency around illegal migration as other countries are doing so would help stymy the flow, and actually deporting people would help too (trust me I worked close to the Immigration removal teams, and they deport so few). Oh and they lied about the black hole - they are well briefed ahead of the election - even the smaller party leaders are briefed. I have worked hard for nearly 40 years, paid a lot in tax and cannot access the systems I have paid literally tens of thousands into when I need them, because they are clogged up with people who dont pay in... thats unhelpful. I am also mega stressed about tax rises - as I dont see a pay rise of sensible proportions coming, and I will have to pick up the tab of whatever they do to us. Shame on them.
@DS-cf1zc2 ай бұрын
I should have added, that what will we do when the NHS is clogged up with pensioners this winter because they dont turn the heating on, and end up ill as a result - lets see what costs more - keeping them in hospital beds with pointless ailments exacerbated by a lack of warmth in their own households - so shortsighted. But at least they will be warm and medically cared for - so might make it through the winter.
@suewood85382 ай бұрын
The attack on pensions is designed to make people think twice about retiring early and encourage others to return to work. The much maligned Baby Boomers are being missed and there is a desperate skills shortage in this country, but I know people who will live on bread and water rather than return to the world of "preferred pronouns" and DEI. The government is also cynical enough to not mind if more pensioners die, as it saves on the state pension bill and increase IHT. Makes me wonder whether the two strategies aren't linked.
@DS-cf1zc2 ай бұрын
@@suewood8538 I quit one industry a few years ago - prisons - a lot of us experienced folk did - 25 years of my life, treated like shit - and they were almost asking us to leave. It was a mess decades ago.. Its just got a whole lot worse. I will write my book on my experience when I retire - but if you are bored and want a real perspective of prisons - read Ian Achesons Screwed - released this year, and sets a near perfect outline of my experience - and Ian will thank me for another sale. 🤣 And I like your thinking around the new governments pensioner strategy - better dead than red, to stop paying state pensions and to take a chunk more IHT - you have outlived your usefulness to the human race - be off with you. I tolerate our entitled younger generation, our older generation genuinely passed on knowledge and wisdom, our younger generation think they know it all already. Some think they know what I know after 38 years in business, and having survived 25 years behind bars (I always find that funny)- but I tolerate it, so I can call it a day in tens years time. Then I intend to do two days a week pushing trolleys around a supermarket carpark, or to B&Q to give people crap DIY advice. 🤣

Tough, unpopular decisions are always best made at the beginning of a Parliamentary term. The Govt has inherited a £22 billion fiscal hole so it has to address that before it can do what it was elected to do and part of that is to improve public services which are in the worst state than i can ever remember. Yes it is unfortunate that pensioners and those families with more than two children are having to take the hit but we must also bear in mind that many pensioners can take it because they have sufficient income to live on. As for apportioning blame, it is not Labour that left the economy and our services in such as parlous state. It's the Tories pure and simple. What i find unforgivable is Starmer's reluctance to address the elephant in the room for fear of losing support in the red wall seat and that is Brexit for it is that which is the cause. of most of our problems and will continue to be so until we at the very least re-enter the Single Market as a prelude to rejoining the EU

Chris - I don't think you understand the concept of council tax as you stated on a previous video which you commented back on me to. Council tax bands are based on 1991 prices so if that house was worth £100,000 it was say band C. If that house was sold for £300,000 in 2024 it will still be band C as it was worth £100,000 in 1991. A £100,000 house bought in 2024 will most likely not have been worth £100,000 in 1991 and will be banded at the same worth as it was in 1991. When a property is sold it is reassessed to see if the band that it was in is still applicable today i.e has it been extended dragging the value up to maybe go into a higher band. Today's prices have no bearing on the counil tax bands apart from as mentioned when a property is sold. Basically someone could have had a small 2 bed property and extended it to a 6 bed mansion but because it's not sold since 1991 it will still be valued as the 2 bed property it was in 1991.
@chrispalmer242 ай бұрын
Hmmm. I'm trying to work out if what I said was unclear. The point in this one was that someone who buys for example a £365,000 new build today could be paying so much more than someone who has a £365,000 value house they have had since 1991. I'm sure that's right? Unless I'm missing something like the reassessment you mentioned. I'm in the second highest council tax band, despite the property being built in 1986 in Wales, although I'm pretty sure that's just because of the 2003 values rather than 1991.
@MarkBurnham-x2w2 ай бұрын
The new house at 365,000 will pay the price of a comparable property in its area as it will be assessed by the council and government. The house that was £365,000 in 1991 will be reassessed if it's in the correct band when sold and has no bearing on a current property worth £365,000. The property worth £365,000 will most likely be in the highest bands anywhere in the country regardless if it's sold or not since. A £365,000 property in 2024 could be in a higher band in some areas and lower in others as it depends where in the country it is due to property value disparity around the country. The value of £365,000 in 2024 has no effect on the banding at that price in 1991. It will be assessed at what it would have been worth in 1991 which would be significantly lower than it's value today. So a £365,000 property in 2024 could have been £100,000 in that area in 1991 and will be assessed that way. The issue this system has is that there are properties that have been extended that will still be paying the 1991 band as it may not have sold and hasn't been reassessed since. Eg a 2 bed house in 1991 has been extended to a 6 bed property since then but will still be paying council tax of a 2 bed as it hasn't sold.

Regarding fiscal drag, people should remember that Labour (1997 to 2010) had the Lower Earnings Limit (the earnings level where you start paying Income Tax) pretty much track with inflation. The Conservatives did then accelerate its rise way faster than inflation. Even with it being frozen for the last 3 years, overall it is still way above the level it was in 2010 compared to inflation. As the IFS stated recently, while the Tax Burden is at a 70 year high, the amount the average salaried person pays in income related taxes is at a 50 year low in real terms.

I think the black hole is between her ears, not in the public finances 🤣. Also do you think the unions will ask for a new clause in workers contracts saying "our workers (including the train drivers) don't have "broad shoulders", so don't you dare come after us for extra tax, or we'll strike (again)" 👀.

@@0casey963depends how you determine “left wing”. For many people: high taxes + in bed with the unions + big state = left wing. There are other factors too, hence i agree with the OP, the Tories haven’t been right wing since Cameron 2008/2009.

Normally find this channel fairly level headed and sensible but bringing in politics has soured it a bit for me - think Chris should pack off to Dubai and pay no tax, seems like his dream situation
@chrispalmer242 ай бұрын
I like to also cover topics that everyone’s talking about. Everyone is asking me how their pensions and investing will be affected by policy changes so seems silly to ignore it. I’ll still make regular content too. I did consider Dubai but I’ve chose to stay here. I’ll have paid over £60,000 in tax this year (so I’m far from avoiding it) but similarly don’t feel like I should be happy about paying more 🤷♂️

I’m on the same FIRE path as Chris (and also paying tonnes in tax as a higher bracket tax earner) so a certain government would selfishly be great for me but unfortunately look what’s happened to the country in general over the last 12 years!

It’s very important to know the two are inextricably linked. Especially if you didn’t already. If you work, you will be significantly worse off under labour.. as the last 6 weeks should have shown you already!!

Why does no one mention equity release when it comes to pensioners. Someone who is asset rich but cash poor is still rich. I think equity release should be made more affordable as a way that pensioners can supplement their income if they are struggling. It's unpopular though as many want to leave it to children/grandchildren as inheritance
@chrispalmer242 ай бұрын
I think it’s brilliant. Honestly I’d be happy for my parents to just spend it and enjoy their lives as much as they can. But I get why people want to for sure.
@hughiemg22 ай бұрын
@@chrispalmer24 I'm the same. The only draw back is that as far as I know its expensive. I think there is a merit in the Govt offering some sort of a scheme where there is the capacity for an equity release which is held as a lean against the property until time of inheritance with a base rate level of interest.
