People have asked me about the TD25 kits for years, and until recently, it was one of the best choices on the ENTIRE market for the price. But it has been dethroned by an unlikely drumset: the TD17KVX.

Costco is currently selling a TD-25K-SC setup (item 1381159) that comes with an extra post for a 3rd cymbal for $1699. I bought it last fall and am very happy with it, except for the fact to it went on sale 90 days later for $200 less. :/

I agree with you 100%. I just got the TD-17KVX a week ago and it is a great kit . I had to wait 3 weeks for it on backorder. I was offered the TD-25K for the same price ( I paid $1580 ) if I did not want to wait. But I wanted that 12in snare and 3 cymbals , plus the new module. I am so glad I waited !! When you start layering sounds , this thing really comes to life !!

I bought the td25k maybe 7 years ago. I got 3 cymbals though. My module is the one pictured at 2:40 td25kv and same kick drum. I do think i paid $2,500 for the kit, had to purchase hi-hat stand, my double kick pedals, amp separately. In over $3,200. I dont think my module is available anymore. I love the thing but i nothing to compare it to and Im 53 just love to play along with my 80s rock in the basement

I like mine also...but i bought mine used for 700 at a pawn shop 5 years ago and it came with a high hat stand and a Gibraltar double kick and a nice dw thrown...i replace my td3 and never looked back,,, sold that for 500....I bought a extra tom for 50 some place....i wish the drum module was more computer friendly its a pain in the ass loading new sounds .... That said its easy to just midi this to my Daw and use endless drum sounds there...Wish roland would figure a way out to make the snare and Kick feel more real...to me that is the worst part of these

Agreed. I use my edrums for quiet practice or cool effects on my songs, I prefer acoustic kits for many reasons, but again, they’re too loud. And I’m not gonna buy any quiet cymbals or dampeners, I don’t like the feel. I have some cheaper, but still very nice edrums, got a used Yamaha DTX502 for a steal, and I think it does exactly what I need, I practise on acoustic kits when I’m waiting for a gig to start and use my edrums for about anything else.

Love it!! The reason that Roland is still keeping the TD-25 Drum sets at a high price point is because they're insist on keeping ridiculously high MSRP's on the individual pieces - like those crappy PD-85 pads for over $200 each! And even worse, the PDX-6 is still $130! Who the F!@# is buying a brand new 6 inch drum pad for $130??? And the reason why the the TD-25KVX is $4000 is because they insist on selling that kick drum for over $1000. It's so insane and I don't know why they can't lower the prices on these pads, especially the ones that they've been selling for years and are so clearly less of a value than what many other brands are offering. You should do a video about those PDX-6/8 pads and why Roland is still (1) using them in their drums sets and (2) selling them for so much compared to other pads you can buy individually on the market. Another Idea for a video that I just had is about the different kinds of pre-made acoustic-size electronic kick drums on the market and what is the best deal.

I think its still worth it. Personally, if I were to get the td-17(any tier), id upgrade every drum pad on there. Once you upgrade the bass drum, you’re gonna have to upgrade your drum rack too. Or, you can just buy the td-25kv for 2500 bucks, upgrade nothing and (arguably) have better sounds. Just my opinion:) -love the channel! You got the best e drumming info in the world!

Justin, it's two years later (December 2020) and with all the options for downloadable sounds by Drum-Tec for around $40 per edition, is a used TD-25kv a better buy than a TD-17kvx if the 17 is $300 more? I guess what I'm asking, overall, if the toms are better on the 25, what would be the setback of the 25 vs the 17 since Drum-Tec has created some killer sounds?

2 weeks ago I was in this dilemma. I needed to decide between the TD17KVX or TD25KV. Sincerely I did not know what to justify for the 25KV knowing that it is a previous generation, the differences between the modules and maybe the bass drum and the hi-hat. But I did not take into account for MIDI recording, it seems to me that the 25KV has superiority over the 17KVX. Not only because of the positioning sensor in the snare drum, very late (unfortunately), I read the difference between 3 layers vs. 2 layers of the 17KVX. The 17KVX is here and (let me tell you) that the shipment is international, when it has arrived in my country we find that the rack box has been left in the store (personally retired in a Guitar Center shop in Miami). Maybe next week, the rack arrives. I hope that for the work of the recording through VSTi, I have not made a bad choice and this is a great kit. How I would have liked to see this video among other articles before to decide.

ugh, bought a 25kv 15 months ago...I think after you recommended it lol. But what I was looking for was the td-17, it just didn't exist at the time. I was upgrading from my Alesis Nitro and didn't want to upgrade twice. I'm still happy with my 25kv, it's an amazing kit and I've spent several hundred hours on it. Like you said though, if it was today, I would have just ordered the 17 most likely. I will say I love the simplicity of the 25 brain with how good it sounds. Can you talk about the brains of the kits? One of the things that I love about my 25kv were the sample/kits I bought from vexpressions. I'd love if you could talk about those as well, or better yet, could you discuss loading kits like those into a brain for a topic at some point? Is there software you can use on your computer to load kits faster or easier than doing one at a time into each sound bank?

Hey man great video! I’m really thinking about getting the td17kvx but I don’t have a chance to play it. One thing holding me back is the snare. I play a lot of island style reggae which requires you to switch from rim shots to cross sticks between verses and choruses. If there’s anyone who’s played these sets and knows it inside and out it’s you! This brings me to my question, can the snare on the td17kvx play both rim shots and cross stick sounds on one setting? Or do you have to play one setting with a rim shot sound and then stop/switch to a cross stick setting? Thanks in advance man!

Hey, Justin, another great video, sir! I wanted to ask you about another brand, Yamaha. I have been noticing that Sam Ash, Guitar Center, Musicians Friend, etc. have been slashing a few hundred dollars off the Yamaha DTX 532? I'm not sure of the exact series number...I'm thinking about the ones with the silicone snare pad, rubber toms, that hi-hat pad, etc. Anyway, I'm wondering if Yamaha is going to surprise us all at Winter NAMM 2019 with perhaps, a new series? I know they just came out with those dumb drum sets with the rubber pads and boring 10 kit modules. I'm not talking about them. I'm talking about a re-haul of the DTX522K and the DTX532K. I just found my Cascio catalog, so now I don't sound as dumb as I did previously! ;-) Anyway, have you heard any gossip? I just prefer the module sounds of the Yamaha.

@@stephenhughes5156 hey Stephen, KVX is a great option. I did not know about it at the time, and I got mine just over $2k, so price would be a factor as well. It's funny because I ended up trying to build a kit more like the kvx in the end. You can see what I can't up with on IG @djatldrums If I was looking now the kvx would be hard to pass up.

@@DavidJenkinsDrums Awesome, thanks! I dont suppose you have any thoughts on KVX vs Alesis Strike? I would probably go with the Strike, but it seems to have issues with the hi hat, and Rolands tend to more durable anyway, but of course the Strike has the size factor (and possibly other things). In any case, it helps that you think the KVX is worth the extra investment over KV, so cheers for that!
@DavidJenkinsDrums
@DavidJenkinsDrums 5 жыл бұрын
@@stephenhughes5156 Hey Stephen, I have not played the Strike, so I really can't say. Overall Roland has good resell value, which is becoming more important now that I am buying stuff then trying to trade up. Having said that, the TD-25 module resell value has actually dropped quite a bit, but the drums and pads you get with KVX will hold value better than other brands. Good luck, and post on here when you get your kit please. -DJ

DJATL Drums Thanks! Tbh, I think I’ll end up going with the strike. I just think it’d be awesome to wail away on those bigger pads/cymbals. Plus I think the updates have fixed most of the issues (though I suppose there is still the issue of Alesis reputation for durability- which might be ok with the right warranty). I think the best thing to do though would be to try them out. Funnily enough, I think these two kits might have been the two kits I tried out when I randomly went to a music store a few months back. But probably need another go before making my purchase. Cheers pal!

Been thinking of selling my Roland td 25kv (purchased 3 years ago when came out) and embrace the acoustic-to-electronic conversion road. If new it costs 2500$, what would be a fair price for a used kit that still looks like new?
@Aussie_Badger
@Aussie_Badger 5 жыл бұрын
Yo Justin! Thanks for the update. I agree, I would not buy a TD25 kit if I was in the hunt for something right now. I bought one a year ago and it served me well, but as you know I sold my TD25 module a few weeks ago to upgrade to a TD30 and I have not been happier. I kept all other parts of the TD25 kit (rack, cymbals, pads etc) as they are all still fine in my opinion. Just added a larger snare and used the PDX-100 snare that came with the TD25 kit as a 4th tom. I think the market is soon going to be flooded with people trying to sell their TD25 kits and modules. This will no doubt force the prices down.

Hi Broc, The TD 30 module is an option I may consider, however, I only need a few kits and the TD 25 has kits from the TD 30, what is the biggest difference for you?
@Aussie_Badger
@Aussie_Badger 5 жыл бұрын
David Harnett - the biggest differences for me: 1. Trigger inputs. TD25 has a cable snake and a limited number of trigger inputs (snake has kick, snare, hats, ride, 1 crash, 3 toms + there is 2 extra single inputs for 1 more crash and 1 AUX), while the TD30 has 14 individual trigger inputs (kick, snare, hats, ride, 2 crash, 4 toms, 4 AUX). So you can expand your kit much more on the 30. 2. Sounds on the TD30 are superior. The kits on the TD25 are not the same kits as on the TD30 but I believe the sounds are derived from the SuperNatural sound engine the TD30 uses. The TD30 also has better sound editing ability. 3. Number of kits. The TD25 has 18 pre-set kits plus another 18 user kits to create your own or download from elsewhere. The TD30 has 80 pre-set kits plus another 20 user kits.
@davidiand7
@davidiand7 5 жыл бұрын

I totally agree with you! From a professional drumteacher´s perspectiv the TD-17 KVX is the better buy! I had to choose a e-drum set 1 1/2 years ago for my new teaching studio. I bought the TD-50 because especially the module of the TD-25 is a overpriced toy for me. Let´s make a comparission of the topversion of the TD-25 and the TD-50-K. The TD-50 K costs roundabout 1000 $ more than the TD-25 topversion. For me it´s a nobrainer that these 1000 $ more are worth it to spend! And next year I´ll replace my TD-4 students drumset with the TD-17 KVX. It´s teh best mid-price e-drum set on the market right now.

My friends just brought a TD17KVX and i tried it to compare with my TD15KV. TBH I don’t believe the 17 use the same sound engine with the 25 series even though Roland said so because the sound is obviously different. And the snare sensor is not as sensitive as the 25’s despite bigger. It cannot recognizes my rim hit and head hit correctly. I do not know if any adjustments are wrong but it obviously not as good as 25 s.

I think it has to do with the td-25 coming out in 2015 and usually they have 4 year cycles (at least that's the pattern I've seen in the past) honestly I would pay the extra 800 dollars for the td 25kv but I totally agree that the k model is overpriced especially because the Tom pads are smaller and have that white rim around them and like you said Justin comes with 1 less crash cymbal. Just my thoughts. I actually did buy the td-25kv about a year and a half ago and almost bought the k version. So glad I didn't and am very happy with the td-25kv!:)

A couple of questions, any help by anyone would be appreciated... getting very close to deciding on my kit! 😄 1. Is TD-17KVX worth the extra cost over the 17KV? 2. Are there any updates regarding the Hi hat issues of the Strike? (As in its Jan 2919- have they fixed it?) Because it might come down to choosing between TD17KVX and Strike, and that seems like a big issue with the strike (you can also say which kit you think is best overall). 3. As a slightly lower budget option, what is better- the TD17KV or DM10 MKII Pro? Any one that answers even one of these questions is a legend haha.

lol , I will try, with what I have read on the net (I don't own one yet and play on TD4 with my band), but this is my opinion 1. yes, the cymbals are much better and u get a opening charley 2. Alesis strike ? This is for unambitious amateurs, if you are a real dummer you want Roland or ATV, not less. It last for years and easier to resale 3. TD17 always. The sound is based on the flagship TD50

What if the price of the TD-25KS-STD is $100 cheaper than the TD-17-KVXS? It looks like the differences are; smaller snare, upgraded module/ stand.

I think they should have dropped the prices on the "old" td-25k and kv, and ran the new KVK for 2799. I think they'd have moved a lot more units that way. As it sits, I have zero interest in the current line up, and like you, I'm leaning towards the TD-17 stuff.

The TD-25 KVX should have had a re-branded TD-30 module maybe a new case on the module and put it at 4k. TD-35 maybe as mentioned... The TD-30 is such a nice module to just toss. That would have been something. I bought a TD-17 module for my A2E kit and it is amazing sound wise over the TD-25. I am happy they made the TD-17 module priced right. I never expect Roland to "get it". I expect them to go in the way of Gibson with over priced products because of the name. With smaller companies chipping away at them with awesome products without the same name. For example if you play guitar the Gibson Les Paul Standard vs PRS guitars. PRS is killing them with better quality and features at a much lower price and better buying options. The consumer will wise up.

Hi Justin! I've got a quick question! Do you know of any way to link up my old TD-9 to the TD-25K to have two more Trigger Inputs? Or any way to expand the TD-25K at all (without using a splitter and two mono pads that is)? The V-Drums Forums didn't really have a thread discussing this exact issue, but since the TD-25K doesn't have MIDI-IN I was wondering if using the TD-9's MIDI-Out to lead into the TD-25K's USB-IN (which you would normally utilize to run something like SuperiorDrummer on your PC) could potentially work? Thank you!!

Kinda sad that Rolland is doing this. It's been said numerous times I'm sure, but Rolsky needs to drop 1500 from every kit they're selling now. Makes me just wanna avoid them altogether when getting a new e-kit.

They had to give away tm-2 with the td-25 so you could have some kind of user samples import and layering via MIDI to keep up with the td-17 sample import and layering functionality. Not being able to assign different instruments to head/rim of the td-25 module is also a head scratcher decision by Roland. I was thinking maybe they would fix that with a firmware update, um no not at all. The td-25 sounds are very good, but the prismatic engine is IMO much better than the super natural engine from the earlier generation. Now with the td-27 out the 25 prices will keep falling

Would a TD17 module not work on a TD25KV set? TD25KV can be had for around $1999 new. Could sell the module maybe $600-800 on eBay, and buy a brand new TD17 module for $500-600. I'm weighing that idea against buying a TD17KVX and then purchasing 2x PDX100 (~$220 ea), a PD-125BK, moving the PDX-12 to floor tom, and selling the 3x PDX-8s on eBay for around $80-100 ea. First option costs around $1600-1800, second one costs around $2300-2500 but a much nicer snare and pads all around. The question is, before deciding which one makes the most sense, will these components even work together?
