So happy for someone to listen to Teardrop Explodes. I think the whole Wilder album, the follow up, deserves a listen start to finish. Julian Cope, lead singer, released some amazing songs too. Especially his first 4 albums.

👍I would also be fine with Justin listening to Wilder entirely, which is The Teardrop Explodes' ultimate album.

Bought this single when it was in the charts in 1981. Passionate Friend was another killer track.

From this album, try Poppies In the Field or Brave Boys. From their 2nd album Wilder, try Seven Views of Jerusalem or the tune ...And the Fighting Takes Over. Julian Cope went solo after this, and some stand out tracks of his are: Elegant Chaos, Head Hang Low, Kolly Kibber's Birthday, Pristeen.

This is definitely in my top 10 favourite songs and I still have the single, “Reward” was the big hit with one of my favourite opening lines of any song, “When I Dream” is possibly a forgotten single rarely heard these day but still a great song, “Poppies in the Field” is definitely worth a listen.

Agree with Poppies in the Field as a stand out, but just do the whole album JP, you won't regret it.

OMG !! This is the first ever gig I went to. January 1982 Lancaster university , England. Think they were promoting the ' Wilder ' album. They were great that night. Thanks for the nostalgia , Julian Cope though , what a maverick ! Brilliant. Thanks JP. 😍 Listen to ' Colours fly away '.

I think "Peggy Sucide" by Julian Cope, the singer here, is my favorite album from 1991. It won't get a lot of views if you react, but it is a fantastic album. I suggest because you said how much you like his voice. Maybe you can check it out on your own.

You just made my day JP. I adore Julian Cope and the Teardrop Explodes. You should definitely consider a deep dive. There is a large catalogue of music. Julian is still recording, and has a very loyal fan base. For the Teardrop Explodes consider Reward as their most famous track and Sleeping Gas for a deeper listen. I have a soft spot for Trampoline by Julian Cope, that is before he left the Pop world and headed out into more adventurous waters. I do hope you follow your instincts and investigate them.

Julian Copes solo stuff is also brilliant, try any track from "Floored Genius" the best of Teardrop Explodes and Copes solo work.

Great album, great band. Nuff said. "You say you want to hear more from this band." Well, stick another song on, then🙄 By the way, I suggest you play "Use Me" from the Kilimanjaro album if you like a long acoustic guitar track, or "When I Dream" if you want something that'll stick in your head after you've listened to it.

Treason is an amazing track... on his website a few years ago, Julian Cope put up an early TX gig for free download, which had a totally different arrangement of the song (the "Until you realise..." chorus part only came in at the very end) which was really interesting... anyway, a hobby horse of mine is that post-punk was a time when even the weirdest, most alternative, drug-addled bands like TX still had TUNES for days, and this is a great example... if you want other tunes to check out, Reward and Passionate Friend were the other big singles, but I'd love to see you do a deep dive on 2nd album Wilder, which I think is a lost classic... PS Julian Cope was a big comic fan, the name "The Teardrop Explodes" came from the panel of a Marvel Daredevil comic...

I was surprised to see this. The 2nd concert I ever attended had this band, Heart, Joan Jett and Queen all playing that day. This band I was the least impressed with, I knew all the others. Julian Cope seemed quite arrogant saying things like, "You'll really be clamoring for this song years from now." Their sound reminds me of the more talented Psychedelic Furs and Ultravox.
@frugalseverin2282 Жыл бұрын
I looked it up, that concert was on 5 June 1982 in Milton Keynes. The Queen portion (they headlined) was recorded and broadcast on Channel 4 and released as "Queen On Fire - Live At The Bowl". The Teardrop Explodes broke up before the end of the year and before releasing their 3rd album.

Oh nice one, one of the best bands from the Post Punk/psychedelic revival intersection. Tbh, I can tolerate brass in this style of music much more than I can with ska.
@sicko_the_ew Жыл бұрын
Enjoyed this but don't have anything to add to that. Here's something where you need to "listen past the recording" to just the music, and what it might've become. (On a punk/ska kind of day, maybe.) *Panxiphere - Demos* kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZyzgWxjprKhgpo (You won't get a lot of views of it on the channel, but you might find something interesting to listen to in it. Rough cuts.)

Ahhh, The Drop's, formed in my hometown, don't cha know... A decent pop band, good tune, vocals, and pretty catchy with it. I think they had a few hits, though I don't remember them much. And I even bought this album. Think their biggest hit was Reward, which had some great brass on it. Yeah, not bad.

For me, I think "Reward" would have been a better song for you to have started out with. A faster, brighter song that I think you might have connected with better as an introduction. Perhaps play this track as a Take to before your deep dive. The band name actually comes from the Silver surfer story. The Silver surfer hasn't been properly represented in the Marvel universe. In the comic book, he was an extremely deep philosophical character whose people where the height of enlightenment and justice. "The Teardrop Explodes" came about as the Silver surfer came to his realisation that he would never see the love of his life again.

Not really for me, but not awful. I do believe though, that their band name derives from a strip in a Spiderman comic!🕷🕸

Prior to founding The Teardrop Explodes, Julian Cope (vocals and bass) was part of the short-lived band The Crucial Three along with two other notable Liverpuldian alternative rock figures who founded two upcoming bands, Echo & the Bunnymen (Ian McCulloch) and Wah! (Pete Wylie). Regarding an upcoming track from The Teardrop Explodes, I could recommend two other tracks also released as a single, "Ha Ha I'm Drowning" as well as "Reward" (which was an non-album single in the UK but included on the US version of Kilimanjaro), however the track "When I Dream" (also extracted as a single) can be more interesting because it prefigures the sound and musical orientation of their second album, Wilder (1981) which I personally find much better than Kilimanjaro because more diverse in its musical palette.
