Veilguard is such a funny name in hindsight, because never do you really feel like a cohesive organization in that game compared to how the Inquisiton functioned. Which isn't helped by the fact that they don't say the word Veilguard a single damn time until the epilogue, making it obvious that it was a hasty last minute change because nobody had any idea what to do.

Another thing that REALLY hurt Veilguard was in interviews one of the devs going "unlike the older games, this is the first game in the series that will have good gameplay because it is an action game". Because lemme tell ya, that pissssed people off. Turns out, throwing your most popular entries under the bus and calling them bad by insulting the genre is a real good way to alienate your audience that actually LIKED that genre! So Bob is 100% right on the action game trend turning people off because the devs themselves threw fuel on that fire

RE: VRChat and PS Home...knowing a couple people who are super into VRChat and having sunk a decent chunk of time in it myself, there's a lot of important features that a console game tied to a major brand just couldn't replicate. Like obviously you wouldn't be able to set **any character who's ever had a 3D model** as your avatar, but another big thing is the cottage industry that's popped up of premium avatars and commissioning custom avatars, which is generally done via third party payment processing and storefronts. Anything like that for a potential PS Home successor would assuredly involve Sony taking a cut of any transaction, not to mention having to adhere to their (definitely stricter) terms of use. You'd probably also have to work with much tighter technical constraints for custom content too, since Sony probably wouldn't be cool with someone's custom model spawning 8 zillion particle effects and melting people's PS5s.

Having played Yakuza 7 for the first time like 2 months ago, slight correction; they actually do give you The Hyperbolic Time Chamber in Sotenbori right before the giant level spike and it is real good. But the spike is giant - the prior chapter ends on a Lv35-36 fight and The Spike is a duo boss against a Lv50 pair who would suck to fight individually, never mind together, at mid-high 30s. The game doesn't tell you the jump is coming or what level you should aim for, just to use the chamber - I notice, being most of the way through Infinite Wealth myself now, that they explicitly give recommended levels and even recommended equipment quality tiers (1*-7*) before dungeons/looming boss fights, which is real nice of them.

I think the method of grinding is lame, even if it only takes an hour and a half, but I do appreciate why the spikes happen as a narrative device. The two fights in question hit harder for it imo

@@Dasaltwarrior I agree, honestly, for who they are the level-spikes actually make perfect narrative sense (and the second one is hard even at or around Lv50, which is also perfectly fitting), it's just a fine line to walk. In that sense it's a bold move, which having now finished Infinite Wealth, they're shockingly brave in a lot of ways in these games.

Re: controller layouts, I’m in my early 30s and am a bit of a controller polyglot; SNES, Playstation, Xbox360, GameCube, whatever. But most of my friends are either PS or Xbox-only users who have some trouble adapting when visiting each other’s house (especially because Xbox’s lettered buttons are flipped from Nintendo’s). The muscle memory development is real. On the other hand, I am generally rubbish at using M+Kb in more complex games; if I have to use more than WASD and the very basics like E&R, Ctrl, Shift and 1-3, my fingers stumble on themselves. My friends grew up playing WoW and Starcraft so they are much more fluent than me.

To clarify, PS and 360 buttons are usually mapped similarly, but the glyphs being different symbols and colors is what messes my buddies up in that case. Like those Stroop tests where you say the color of text, but it spells the word for a different color to try and trip you up. Nintendo VS other layouts is an actual difference in where Confirm and Jump defaults are for example.

Gotta agree with Kris on all his Yakuza points; the 8 improvements, the voice acting, the callbacks, etc... But most of all that 7's combat was ROUGH. It's so obviously "First time making a turnbased RPG" that's being carried by the writing and all the other side things, which are great... but I was consistently shocked at people being so impressed by RPG combat that's basically just Neptunia with money. It can't be understated how much 8 improves the combat by leaps and bounds. A shame the general plot took a hit coming from the heights of 7. Since Macross came up, Kris is immediately proven right as Sony / Crunchy / Disney are just randomly censoring parts from episodes.

It's absurd how much of a botch the marketing and release of DA:V was, because the actual game is fine. But I genuinely don't think I even would've known when it came out if it wasn't for it being discussed *on this podcast*. Also, what's really insane about the DA:Veilguard name change is, it almost certainly was to disconnect it from Inquisition... except the plot is still very openly tied to DA:I's, to the point that if you don't have a save to import, which I didn't, it asks you to design an Inquisitor and fill in a bunch of big decision points from DA:I. And the Dreadwolf is still a major character in the story, he's just not the *main* antagonist, so they could probably get away with using that title anyway!

Lots of people reported that the fight with [REDACTED] right after you get the grind tower was a pretty decent spike. I've seen people brute force it though so if you wanted to try hard enough its easily possible.

​@ It's still a fundamentally bad design and time padding. I've never seen an RPG, let alone a good one, say "Go grind for hours" at me. They could have just as easily made them a challenging fight at 40 instead of inflating their numbers to 50, or expand their moveset further. I've seen people do the whole tower and still be underleveled for that fight.

Does FromSoftware count as major? They'll probably be fine. Elden Ring sold a boatload of copies, and has a good tail. They have also shown no signs of succumbing to the bad habits of the gaming industry, such as bloated budgets, chasing extremley cutting edge graphics, and live service games. In fact, we know they are on multiple smaller projects right now.
