Trophyhunting has a tendency to become infuriating. As fun as the journey is, there are a lot of downsides that come into play. In this video, we discuss those.

Something I would do if I love the game and I wanted to platinum, depending on the requirements I would take a massive break from the game (couple of months or years) then return to attempt the platinum so I don’t end up getting sick of it quickly and I would have a blast attempting the platinum but games that requires extreme time dedication like red dead or gta or Valhalla is not worth it, the torture is not worth it.

Re the mental health, I determined what my goal was - what type of collection I wanted, after that there was never any problem. If you only want everything 100% then you'll have to deal with the consequences you talked about in this video. If you want every trophy that exists and be at the top of trophy leaderboards you'll have to deal with the consequences of that goal. I decided that I don't care about completion percentage, I don't care about trophy level, I don't care about how many platinums I have, what I care about is my list having what I believe are good quality games, and i'll attempt to plat them. If it's not fun to work on it, I won't. I popped my first trophy june 2009, first plat jan 2010, got my account permabanned in 2014 for experimenting with jailbreaking - I didn't realise the consequences. I lost 5 years of trophies and spent the next 5 years not even looking at another trophy. I gave up. That was too much for me. Finally in 2019 I realised wait a minute, just because I lost 10 years of progress, why can't I just start over again now? As a result of losing my account and turning my back on trophies, when I started again fresh in 2019, I found what I loved again. And my experience in losing progress made me feel super patient and able to just know when to quit either if I didn't like a game or no longer wanted to play it. I put 3000 hours into GTAV before unlocking the platinum. I'm still only 92% because I can't be bothered to do the Doomsday Heist. My friends all stopped playing and I don't enjoy that aspect of the game doing heists with randoms, so I'm not going to do it. Sometimes it takes a cold hard think about priorities to leave something alone. I want those Doomsday trophies, but only if it will be fun to do it with friends. If and when that day comes, then I will do it. If that day doesn't come, I'm not doing it with randoms. I'm at peace with the 92%

The newer RE games are really fun to platinum/100% because most of the trophies gives you new tools to play with in-game to make it more fun. And some trophies pushes you to play the game in ways you probably wouldnt have done if not for the trophies. Replaying the game so many times works in this case because when you play it on repeat playthroughs you realise that the game is pretty short if you know what to do. Online trophies are the absolute worst ones and can definatly ruin a game.

I disagree. This new RE4 Remake makes you finish the game like 5 times. Good lord, imagine finishing a big game like that 5 times, even if you rush it's a big pain in the butt. For me a good platinum is finish once on normal, finish once on hard and that's it.

I think maybe this speaks to a larger problem with the trappings of a trophy hunter mentality, like people feeling the need to platinum everything they play, or only play games they can platinum and ignore everything else (even if they really want to play it). We’ve all been there before, but I always try to remind myself that trophies should never supersede fun and enjoyment of gaming. Fun always comes first.. Quite simply put, you shouldn’t be pushing yourself to pursue trophies if you aren’t enjoying it. There’s also other things you can do to combat tedium and fatigue. For example, I actually just finished a 200+ hour platinum last night that most people would find incredibly tedious, but I loved every second of the journey. Why? Because I spread it out over several months. I played & platinumed other games in between whenever I felt like it, and sometimes I took breaks from trophy hunting/gaming entirely for a few days at a time. If you don’t push yourself past the point of enjoyment, it won’t feel tedious and mentally exhausting, it remains fun and fresh the way it should always be. Just my 2c

I also spread out the time between platinum or trophy hunting for several months on end and taking days off from gaming as I feel I would be burned out or just not interested in the game anymore, (not doing it intentional, just something I do regularly) I want to keep having fun with the games I have and not go for chasing platinums or trophies that I don't want or like doing, waste of time really.

I've had a love/hate relationship with trophies over the years. I used to check the trophy list before I started a game and if the difficulty was too hard I wouldn't even start it. This caused me to miss out on a few great games just because I knew I wouldn't be able to get the platinum. This all changed when I was playing Saints Row Gat out of Hell, I was youtubing the collectibles but hated every minute and just thought why am I doing this. Now I play whatever games I fancy whether they are 9/10 or 2/10 difficulty because at the end of the day, no one really cares how many virtual trophies you have.

I completely agree with Detroit: Become Human. Just started it 3 days ago but I looked at the trophies and once I saw that ALL of the trophies were missable, I’ve struggled to keep playing. Having so many paths to go down and so many trophies is just so overwhelming and I’m not sure if I can keep going for the platinum. Thinking about continuing Deathloop but the fear of losing all the weapons I have collected to a mine I didn’t see or Julianna killing me just kinda puts me off, but regardless I will platinum both games. They each have their enjoyable moments and both stories are unique and different from others.

Funny thing actually, after posting this I started playing Deathloop and it’s really enjoyable. I only got 4 trophies left (including the Golden Loop Update ones) and Julianna isn’t really a threat to me anymore. Now an invasion is just a way for me to get more rewards and practice before I go for Clean-ish Hands (the trophy where you must kill all visionaries and no eternalists in a single loop). And I have tried to turn off Julianna invasions with Friends Only mode, but it keeps bringing in an AI so I put on Single Player Mode.

Trying to go for Platinum in a first playthrough of a game is a recipe for disaster and distracts your enjoyment of a game because you're focused on getting everything right the first time. I generally avoid Trophy guides on a first playthrough and just play the game blind to enjoy it to its fullest, though I do check the Trophy list for any online stuff.

I relate to what you said in this video, there are times when i'm trophy hunting when it just feels so exhausting, annoying, and tedious. For example right now I'm currently going for the FF7 Remake platinum, I absolutely love the Final Fantasy franchise especially 7's universe. However for the last month or two it has felt like a chore to 100% the game, I've found myself drifting to different games to to try and avoid it all together, however I feel like I am unable to fully devote myself into the new games because I haven't 100% FF7 Remake. On the Brightside though I was finally able to beat the Pride and Joy Prototype which has been the main source of my problems for the last month or two so I feel like I am now one step closer in being able to platinum the game and overcome all of these downsides. (Great video by the way!)

I love trophy hunting. Like you said, since getting serious about completing games, I have discovered some amazing games that I would have never even considered were it not for the platinum experience. I have also pushed myself to the limit. Completing games like Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac have shown me what I am capable of if I put my heart and soul into something. The only two issues I have had with trophy hunting is becoming addicted to the cheap, easy, press x for platinum games. An addiction I am happy to say I have kicked. The second issue, which is still ongoing, is my inability to enjoy games without trophies. I used to be able to fire up my switch or my evercade and have a great time on Pokémon or Mario or some fun nes/snes games but now that I trophy hunt…if the hunt isn’t there….then the game ceases to be relevant. Thanks for an insightful and thought provoking video mate 😊

I relate so much to this. I feel like I have a tendency in life to make things work, especially games. Like I need to do it the right way and that is completing the game in a certain order and platinuming it. I kind of feel like Trophy Hunting for me is like a form of OCD. I kind of have this same problem in like TV or books where things NEED to be done in a certain way or order while I should just realize fun is the main goal.

It has reinvigorated my love for the medium and I have become increasingly passionate about it. However, I don’t have many platinums to my name quite yet. I sit at only 16 and feel the need to get more and more. I am always thinking about the next game to play and have a hard time enjoying the game I’m playing. This feeling leads me to anxiety and can take away from the game I am currently playing.

Great video man! Yeah, the biggest thing when trophy hunting is to make sure it’s a game that you enjoy! Whether it’s a 4 minute plat or a 100 hour plat, it’s gotta be fun for you. That’s how I’ve been tackling it and I’ve had a much better experience making sure that I’m playing a game I actually want to play instead of something I feel I need to play. I actually stopped planning out my next platinum trophy cause I never know what I’ll be in the mood for when I finish my current game 😆. And I’ll even come back to a game I’ve platinumed before to do it again (via remaster or PS5 upgrade or something), just because I’m feeling nostalgic or it was a fun time. When enjoyment takes priority, platinum trophy hunting just gets a lot better! 😄

I love that you recognized that achievement hunters forget the reason for playing a game (just as achievement cheesers forget why the achievement exists in the first place). I also love that you also bring up that achievement hunting was something that got you into trying new games in the first place. That is a new perspective I didn't really think about. A side thing, not the main thing to go for If you treat them like that, just like a bonus, you'll never get burnt out although you won't get a platinum in every game you play and some games you won't get very many trophies, but that's the point of it. Like you said at the beginning It's supposed to be for only games you love

Man I love this video, trophy hunting is truly a double edged sword with an honestly easy fix. Trophy lists should be more a play all the stuff or master the game. It’s honestly why I enjoy doing some games that are online MP trophies. I’ll used my latest platinum Evil Dead as an example, it was mainly a play and enjoy all aspects of the game to unlock the trophies. A collectable trophy turns me off games very fast. I loved the Witcher 3 until I had to force the last 3 trophies. Now I can barely want to touch it to play the dlc

They are mostly not fun for me but my mind just keeps pushing me to collect them, so to balance it i want to try to collect all the possible things for example in one region of the game world and then decide is it worth it do to the same in all the regions? I really enjoyed collecting backpacks in Spider Man 2018 for exmaple, they give a good amount of interesting insight to Peter's life before the game starts and they are easy enough to collect.

I did go through my phase of explicit trophy hunting back in 2018 or 2019 for a few months. Before that I never really paid attention, but nowadays I just play games that I like, and once completed a regular playthrough, I’ll check to see if the platinum is doable, if it is, I do it. Simple and frustration free that way, it works for me. My latest one was Stray, I went back to complete after finding out it’s leaving PS+ Extra on the 18th. I won’t lie I did let the Detroit: Become Human platinum get to me, and I grinded to complete it a few months back. But a bit of effort for a game you love can be worth it once every year or two. Otherwise I chill with story driven games, and either FIFA or CoD in between.

Having a (new) job is also a struggle in regard to gaming. Always feeling too sleepy and exhausted for gaming which makes me sad. I can imagine having children or other duties makes it even harder to keep on gaming regularly. But maybe it’s also a chance to cherish gaming again not reducing to tedious trophy hunting every single day as it used to be before?

It surely is the problem. I started trophyhunting back in 2016. And my first like 10 platinums were those games I pretty much liked. But now... now I start only those games I can platinum, those that don't take much time or effort and so on. It's kinda wrong, because gaming should always be about joy, competition, challenge, emotions, but not the feeling of completing every game. Recently I've platinumed Avengers, not that bad game, but there are a lot of irritations in this game, and I've spent 60 hours on just a grindy process. That is why, I think we should reconsider going after platinums, and try whatever game you may like, but platinum only those that you truly like and the desire to platinum it comes from within.

I think its ideal to have games you enjoy regardless, however I have the same problem where I want to platinum every single game I touch. At first it works but I get burnout sometimes, so what I do now is pick three games and I rotate among those three. It also helps if the genres are different too.

Play to your heart’s content.Don’t force yourself to play. What you could do is pace yourself. For example what I did for Ragnarok was complete one map section and then the next day I work on the next section. I usually play Valorant or another game.

One of the games I want to platinum someday is Monster Prom, it’s this dating sim that’s pretty fun to play. The worst part is, to platinum it you basically have to experience the entire game. As it’s made for multiplayer, there over 500 different events and outcomes to get and well I’m not sure I want to play this game that much, because it’d ruin it for me. I’d know everything about the game, how to min max it, it wouldn’t be fun it’d just be a choice of whether I wanted to win or lose.

That's mainly why I stick to the PS Vita for trophy hunting. A lot of platinum trophies nowadays are really grindy and it would be a slog for me to trophy hunt on other consoles. I have less free time for video games nowadays especially since I just got done with my exams. I'll be catching up on my PS Vita backlog later this month.

My first platinum was Jurassic: The Hunted in 2011 after realizing I only had a small amount of trophies left after my first playthrough so I decided to give it a try and I've been trophy hunting ever since. That said though, every platinum I've gotten since have all been in games that I had a lot of fun playing and/or the game had a simple trophy list. I rather have fun trophy hunting than getting burnt out

As weird as it may sound, Trophyhunting used to ruin games for me. Whenever I played a game, it was with the goal of platinuming it and then never touching it again. It really ruined the fun of taking my time and actually enjoying the game. There were so many games that I rushed through just to get the platinum and then never play again. I still go for platinums occasionally but only for games that I really love such as Yakuza and Earth Defense Force. I try to play the game normally once, and then go back and obtain all the trophies on my next playthrough. For really long games like Yakuza, I will go out of my way to obtain missable trophies on the 1st playthrough but that's it. So yeah, I think trophyhunting is a great thing as long as obtaining the platinum isn't your 1 and only priority

I think the ones that can ruin a game for me are the trophies that almost require you to be the best in the world. It's a common issue with a lot of shoot em ups (which are my favorite games). Like, getting a Platinum in Akai Kitana and Deathsmiles will never happen. The score requirements are nuts. Which for me should be doable. I have top 5 leader board rankings in several of these games... but nope.

Platinum hunting for me started when I beat the final boss within a few weeks. I game a lot so it can be an expensive hobby when I finish a game so quickly. So I started trophy hunting. But I always ignore the trophies in my first playthrough. And luckily 9 out of 10 times I’m enjoying the games I play. And it’s ok to play a game twice for the trophies. But now I’m unlucky. I always wanted to play the game Prey (2017). Yes the game is good, but a few things are a gamebreaker for me. I’m not going into details. So that’s one thing. Second, I have to beat the game like 4 times. Yes there is a way with smart use of manual saves to do it in 2,5 playthroughs and using a good guide, but I don’t like that. I finished the game 1 time now and I’m not looking forward to play it 2,5 times again. Yes I beat the game once, but I still have to go for 2,5 playthroughs for the platinum. I did too much wrong in my first playthrough.

Like has been emphasized, fun is main driving force / reason to play game, get trophies, etc. However, maybe we are looking at it wrong. We are looking at it in a way that it needs to be fun, rather than just having fun with it. It may sound simple, but I think we have just got so caught up with day to day life that we forgot what it is like to have fun.

I think the most important thing about games is enjoyment, i only go for platinums if the trophies are appealing to me. I know of people who buy games because it is an easy plat, not because the game is fun but only to make a number go higher. Games are supposed to be entertainment and played how you like to play them. And it’s easy to say maybe but don’t turn it into work. If you don’t feel like doing something in a game, you don’t have to do it.

I play games I'm interested in, sometimes I don't even look at the guides until after I've played for a while. If a guide indicates a plat is very complicated (lots of misssables, etc) or that it will take 5 playthroughs, etc. it usually just releases me so that I can forget about the trophies and just get whatever I get until I'm satisfied with the game. My favorites are games without missables, that way I can focus on playing the game and if I feel like I still enjoy it enough to go for the plat after another 10-20 hrs, I will likely do it. It all depends on how much I love playing a game vs. how much time it will take to plat. And I normally stay away from those utra simple platinum games, unless it's a game I feel I will also enjoy playing, even if it will only last for a couple hours. I prefer my plats reflect the games I personally love. Games first, trophies second.

I used to play any game really and just go for the plat. I was head on with the trophies. I enjoyed some of them but mostly i put myself through grindy and tedious games which made me hate most of the games i played and i got burnt out. I currently have 84 plats and honestly the games i really enjoy must be 20-30 of them. I stopped caring about the number and the grind in general. If it ain't a game i love i won't plat it. The game that broke me and made me quit this habbit was ghostwire tokyo. This game is so borringly grindy that made me wake up(never got the plat for it , fuck this game). Now i just hunt the games i WANT and love. It ain't worth the time boys.Unless you get paid for it.

Honestly, the main reason i found out people dont trophy hunt is cause of collectibles, but i have always found them enjoyable, i put on a show or youtube series i want to catch up on and watch that as i relax and collect in game objects, its just my opinion but i find it really relaxing (i did all the GTA V collectibles over a week and managed to catch up on so many amazing shows) I also have to share my PS5 with my brother so after a day of collectible / trophy grinding i then have a day to play with friends online, so that definitely helps me power through long games aswell, as after a day im looking forward to it again

After many years of collecting Achivements and trophies, I finally had to give up on them. It got to the point that I was playing while video guides were going on the phone so I could Platinum the game quickly. I decided to take a break and play Starfield with the Achivements disabled and I was having fun. Prior to that, I was playing the Ps3 all year while ignoring my awesome Ps5 games just to trophy hunt. I've since disabled trophy notifications too. I don't even want to trophy hunt or achievement hunt in games I love cause I know it will just suck me back into the hobby. Dirt 5 was the game that I hated working for the platinum but since I was already so close I pushed through to finish it. Now after that if I don't like a game I probably won't finish it. I like collecting platinums and would like 50 to 100+ platinums of games that I enjoyed start to finish rather than 1,000+ games that are frustrating to finish or take 2 seconds to get. I made a video of my 50 platinums collection and one guy said my list isn't good because it doesn't have a certain game, not everyone likes the same games lol. The reason I platinum games is to chill out have fun and enjoy some good games. I don't only play games just because you need to 100% it, get every super hard platinum, be the fastest/first, or the person with the most trophies. That's cool but it's all about having fun no need to push yourself to put so many hours into games that you don't like just for another number on your account. Don't waste your time doing things that frustrate you and play games that you enjoy!
