I'm surprised you didn't go into how their 'default' weapons are designed to psychologically fight against their flaws. Leonardo is always hesitant to put his brothers in danger as their leader so Master Splinter gave him Ninjaken, which (while a Hollywood weapon) were designed for quick, decisive strikes. Raphael is obsessed with proving he's the strongest so he was given the Sai, a disarming blunt weapon meant for defense and not killing. Michelangelo is scatter-brained and lazy so he was given the most complicated (another Hollywood weapon) Nunchaku because it would force him to focus in order to use them effectively, and Donatello with his talents using machines and computers was given the most low-tech weapon possible to teach him not to rely on superior arms.

I love box turtles, and i love Mikey’s character, it’s a good mix, but the show in my opinion was really lackluster. It was refreshing from the 3d 2012 tmnt show, but it wasn’t a good upgrade. Instead of balancing the humor and action, the put the action on the side, and put humor in the spotlight, which they devolved leo into the wisecracking guy in the group, and raph into the “if we work as a team we can do this” person. I actually like that the 2012 turtles are different from each other. Not just their body types and color, but how each of them makes unique expressions or uses slightly different vocabulary (and not just one or two catchphrases). Maybe it's not that great from a ninja perspective but definitely awesome from a character perspective. And the animation isn't that bad once you get used to that.
@psychedashell6 жыл бұрын
They've always had different personalities, even back in the comics when they looked the same you could tell who was talking without referencing their weapons, I always had a theory that each member of the family was based off a different borrough. Donatello from Queens Michaelangello from the Bronx Raphael from Brooklyn Leonardo from Staten Island Splinter from Manhattan The theory has holes because it's based on generalisation but considering Eastman and Laird apparently didn't actually visit NYC until the second or third year of the TMNT comic maybe general was the sum of their knowledge of the area.

That's one thing that is a little sad nowadays. Ninja were basically very resourceful fighters that took what they had and used it with deadly efficiency. We don't have that kind of creativity nowadays. Also, part of me thinks the "Nine Cuts" could have a strong placebo effect. Basically believing that something will protect you and work, often has its own effects. Regardless, I still think it is a form of healing being it works on a psychological level.
@lexsamreeth87244 жыл бұрын
Also, poison is a rather unusual weapon in that it uses the body's natural reaction to fear and danger against itself. The adrenaline response associated with "fight or flight" increases heart rate, and dilates the blood vessels, which would cause a bloodborne toxin to circulate faster. By utilizing a meditative technique such as the Nine Cuts, it could conceivably counter the effects of adrenaline, allowing time for a ninja to escape and seek longer-term medical treatment or means of self-medication.

And speaking of the Sakki Test Splinter actually uses it in a episode TMNT-2012 basically in the episode that later sees the turtles team-up with Dogpound, and Fish-Face against to take on Baxter Stockman, Splinter early on in the episode has the turtles take it in order to teach them how to sense an enemy's intentions after they barely get away with their lives due to getting ambushed by Dogpound, and Fish-Face and they pass with the exception of Raph who fails because his hot-headed arrogance leads him to believe that learning how to sense a enemy's intent is not needed since he "knows what the enemy's intent is". exemplified by this dialogue between Raph and Splinter. Raph: "This is pointless I already know my enemy's intent it's to take me down." Splinter: "You may know the enemy's intentions Raphael but do you know when the enemy will actually strike."
@squisvy41715 жыл бұрын
the new turtles are actually really well thought out. i get from a first look perspective, they may seem really weird and bad looking, but it’s really a prequel before everything truly happens. leo is young and reckless, not really fit for a leader as he would like to, “enjoy being a teenager.” raph is only the leader because he’s the oldest, splinter probably wanted someone mature to watch over the other three and thought, “hey, they’re big brother can do that.”

@InoMercy6 жыл бұрын
2012 Shredder is probably the best written version of the character I've seen. (I still haven't read the comics, bare that in mind) He can be blinded by his lust for revenge, but for the most part his plans all make sense and he's even scored a few wins on the turtles. He's also easily the strongest version (Check out the Death Battle between him and Silver Samurai, most of his more impressive feats come from the 2012 version) he was able to fend off eight mutants at once by himself. and took down multiple Tricaratons solo. But, in my opinion, the best part of Shredder's character is why he's evil. In most versions, Shredder is evil just for the sake of being evil. But the 2012 version's evil acts all stem from one major character flaw: Oroku Saki never takes responsibility for his own actions. Despite how much pain and suffering he's caused those around him, even to those he claims to care about more than anything, he never sees himself as the bad guy. It's amazingly twisted and fascinating to see what lengths, even going into outright delusion, to avoid the simple fact that most of the misfortune in Shredder's life is his own doing.

Michel Bays Turtles maybe better ninjas than the 80s turtles, but atleast Master Splinter in the 80s didnt learn ninjutsu from just a random book.
@JustChuck19825 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your attempt at cannon, but there's actually very little, true to history, ninjutsu being practiced in the 1984 version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In fact, the show's creator, Kevin Eastman, admitted that CBS changed nearly everything from the comic book of the same name, in order to sell more toys. Nostalgia makes a lousy filter when determining accuracy, but it was still a good show.
@girl12132 жыл бұрын
Actually, learning from books tended to be how ninjas kept their knowledge going. They did dangerous work after all. Having access to the knowledge, even without the hand-on experience of teacher, was one of the ways they survived. Even today books hold the most knowledge of ninja skills rather than masters since it's a dying art in terms of usage. Historians use that knowledge now while practitioners are trying to keep the history of it all alive. So not as out there as you'd think in terms of modern usage which Michael Bay's Turtles keep strongly in mind.

Fun Fact about 2012 TMNT: Executive Producer Joshua Sternin was a student at the only Bujutsu schools in the US. The show’s creators and crew had weekly “ninja combat” classes. Leonardo is the only "leader", and is shown in the original live-action movie to take Splinter's esoteric teachings more seriously than the others, as evidenced by his meditation scene. Also, katana/ninjato are the most "ninja" weapon; sai, nunchaku, and bo are Okinawan kobudo weapons.

The 2012 iteration is, by far, my favorite, mostly due to the real Ninjutsu references. The turtles feel relatable and like they're actually learning every day. It is a shame I never finished watching it. I stopped at a moment when they had to flee the city and took refuge in a forest where a Mutagen swamp monster and some Illuminati - yes, literally, the robes are covered with the eye - frogs or something were living.

FUNFACT: Shuriken and kunai were samurai weapons. Because in order to carry them you did need a wooden case and that was against the light as feather philosophy. Doesn't mean Shinobi didn't get trained to throwing them, after all, EVERYTHING is a weapon and thus one must be trained to use 'em. That and shuriken and kunai DID require weapons-grade iron and craftmanship, the first being one helluva scarce resource and the latter drawing way too much attention. Those smiths were frick'n rockstars. Funnily enough, Mike throws a bola and calls it manriki-gusari.. Then again that weapon is pretty much chain with both ends having blades or/and weights. I think it's even on the name. In defense to cartoons, Splinter only learnt about the mindset and martial art parts of ninjas. Don't really remember which version the original cartoon shot, but Splinter was either accessing memories of time being a pet rat and seeing his owner either practice punching or swinging weapon or meditating... Or when he was newly mutagenized.. he came across a PAMPHLET about ninjutsu and decided to raise the turtles among the few lines in there.. So take your poison there xD
@silvermasked05 жыл бұрын
From what I remember, The original cartoon in the 80s Splinter was Hamato Yoshi. He was a human who lived in Japan and was learning ninjutsu. When he was disgraced for not bowing down to a highlevel Master when he came to visit his Masters dojo (an envious rival had stabbed his Gi to the floor making it impossible for him to bow, so when Splinter removed the knife it made it look like he was threatening the Master with a weapon) he moved to America and was poor so he lived like a homeless person eventually taking refuge in the sewers. When he found the turtles he took care of them. The mutagen turned the turtles into human because of their long-term exposure to Splinter/Hamato Yoshi and Splinter turned into a rat because of the long term exposure to the sewer rats. So yeah its weird how the 80s cartoon basically made Hamato Yoshi and Splinter the same person. To my knowledge its the only time thats been done.

I'm really surprised by these results. Also I want to shove 11:04 down someone's throat! I told a moron that Ninjas were poorfolk that defended their villages against the "lawful" Samurai. When samurai showed up and ninja got their kill, they'd take their Katana (two-handed sword), chop it in half to make it more wieldy for their scrawny and malnourished frames (they didn't eat as much as the samurai to grow strong, look at North Korean kids to have an idea). This chopped Katana then became Ninjato (which explains why a one-handed weapon has a two-handed grip), and the rest of the metal was reforged into the other tools ninjas use.

@ssjup816 жыл бұрын
Yeah, same. Well, I'm not mad, but it feels completely off to make him the leader given how he is the emotional one that's prone to make rash decisions because he has trouble focusing and relaxing. He and Mikey are like the wild cards of the group and are supposed to contrast with Leo and Donny. Leo and Donnie are more level-headed and focused, whereas the other two aren't. Other changes, I guess I wouldn't have much of an issue with...but Leonardo not being the leader will take A LOT of getting used to if I were to watch this series.

Honestly it is just weird to have them using different *main* weapons. Obviously they should be versatile and use different weapons and we’ve seen them do so since the beginning. It’s just a signature thing. Like if they had suddenly changed the colors of their masks or if Splinter was suddenly a velociraptor. Raphe can have tonfa and carry them on his person, but I don’t see that as a reason to stop carrying his sai as well. New weapons and gadgets are always welcome, but I personally just don’t like when new things replace iconic things. Ninjas are supposed to be versatile, so them rotating weapons for missions makes perfect sense.
