The reason why I like 2012, Rise and Mutant Mayhem more is because they actually act and look like teenagers than the other versions.

This is a really smart video, I loved how you broke down each & explained in depth why you felt that way. Though for Ninja I will say the 1 scene I always think of to show them that way is when the 2012 Turtles are fighting Tiger Claw in the meat freezer, stalking him from the darkness & quickly disappearing into the background. Still overall agree with this list, great work!

i adore this video, because even though you are talking about multiple versions in comparison to each other, it never feels like it gets even remotely close to bashing, which is extremely refreshing as someone who’s been in this fandom for only a year and has already seen a good deal of the internal fighting. you are quick to understand the goals and accomplishments of each iteration, and you acknowledge their flaws while being intentional in supporting their merits, and it makes me genuinely so happy. i feel like many versions get completely destroyed by the internet for baseless reasons usually rooted in nostalgia, and for you to actually have a criteria that you followed to tee regardless of personal opinion, and making claims you can actually followed up on, means the absolute world to me !! this made me want to watch a lot more versions that usually only get clowned on in review videos, and i feel like overall you have created an incredibly safe space for all turtle fans to discuss the iterations maturely. i’ve been here since the apriltello video and i can’t wait for more, you did a fantastic job !!

The version that gets bashed or dismissed the most is the 1987 series. Most fans weren't even born when that series ended, and people don't usually understand or appreciate 80's and 90's humor or corniness. She was very kind in her reviews, but still kinda dismissed the old TMNT shows and had them ranked low. She even ranked the 1987 series below the Michael Bay movie in most categories. I agree on the "Ninja" part, because cartoons were less violent back then. That said, I disagree with her low rankings for the Teenage, Mutant and Turtle categories.

i have to admit, rise being third in the "teenage" category shocked me, i was sure it would be first (or second, giving mutant mayhem). but i guess the goofy world contributes to that also, i believe that idw would be the most tmnt of the comics. grandted it might be because there are so many issues, but even in the first few ones we have every single category explored, three within the very first comic (from what i remember, its been some time since ive read the beginning). i loved this video, great job!

So a friend of mine and I are trying to write our own hypothetical TMNT show. We have a lot of ideas for it, but this video seems like a great reference for how to embrace each aspect of the turtles' namesake. We already wanna do the different species idea that Rise did (something I LOVED the idea behind, but honestly felt it wasn't explored as well as it could have been. Clearly, you disagree) and I do wanna emphasize more of the ninja and mutant aspects, even working in how some samurai customs may have influenced Splinter and Shredder, and therefore the turtles. The teenage aspect will honestly be the hardest to keep in mind. We plan to have them be 16, but also Raph being a snapping turtle will absolutely not make him look 16.

Honestly, I thought 03 would get a little higher in the turtle category. While I agree that they don't look too turtley, the whole front & back of the shells not being connected works against them for sure, they have used some aspects that I'm surprised other iterations don't exactly demonstrate. This might be more towards how the mutation landed & with Rise being purposeful, Draxum might've manipulated things in order for the Rise turtles to be less reptilian but the 03 turtles, confirmed reptiles. When they were going to the farmhouse, the turtles started falling asleep due to the cold since they're cold blooded. This is where Rise gets a strike against them being turtles. I think Draxum might've manipulated their mutation so they're warm blooded. They sweat, blush, & got fevers in Down With the Sickness which are all traits of mammals. Yes, the 2012 turtles do sweat & blush, can't remember if the 03 turtles do. Not arguing against Rise at all, I knew they'd be in the top spot in the turtle category but wasn't sure if they'd beat out the Batman turtles which I knew those guys were going to be either first or second due to the fact we saw them demonstrate turtle traits in the movie which is something I personally love like whenever it happened, I got super excited & pointed it out. I was watching with a friend since that friend is a Batman fan & I'm a turtle fan so we decided to come together on that, I think I annoyed him with getting giddy about the turtles being turtles. Rise has done a good job with demonstrating their species at least, I love that they did this & it is my favorite iteration, it's what pushed me to learn more about actual turtles in the first place. I write TMNT fanfiction, when you ask which iteration, my answer is just plainly "yes." Eventually, it will be every single iteration due to a series I started that only has two stories so far but the concept is that turtles are misplaced in the multiverse due to the events of Turtles Forever causing rifts to open up across it so turtles are jumping through & ending up in the wrong places. The 87 & 03 turtles team up to fix this problem by rounding up all of the turtles to take them where they belong. I've tasked myself with exploring every single iteration with this. So far it has included 03, 87, Rise, The Last Ronin, & We Wish You a Turtle Christmas. Yes, I have already watched & utilized Turtle Christmas, zero regrets, it was a fun experience. When I write, I like focusing in on the turtle aspect. In the Ronin/Turtle Christmas crossover because yes, I'm evil & did that, I simply described shadows appearing to be scarlet because turtles see darkness as red & it was in the POV of a turtle. I've mentioned heart rates slowing in the cold & the way temperature affects the body when you're ectothermal which might I add I did my research via Magic School Bus so if I'm not accurate on that, sorry that I don't know how a reptile feels temperature. What drove me to lean more into the turtle aspect is a story completely separate to that series I'm working on where 2012 April swaps bodies with Rise Leo so I've been doing a lot of research trying to write in the perspective of someone who isn't use to turtle-like traits dealing with it. Spent hours looking into their vision, tried figuring out about temperature balance, & even adapting things I learned when I was a kid in zoo camp such as the correct way to pet an animal with scales due to the fact if you stroke them in the incorrect direction, it's like having a fingernail bent backwards. Due to this being a 5 way crossover (87, 03, '12, Rise, & MM), I tried looking into my memory banks on which of these guys are more turtle when it comes to how they'd interact with April & I'd say this video more so did a good enough job at ranking turtles but I couldn't entirely remember & it required skimming through stuff when I was already busy with other research but through studying, I learned a lot of fun things which ended up being adapted into jokes like April starts shedding scutes & has a weird desire to eat them for whatever reason. Instinct, when turtles shed their scutes, you have to get them out of their enclosure because sometimes, they want to eat it so I ended up trying to figure out which turtles would be tempted to eat their own scutes. None of the 03 turtles made it onto my list of turtles I'd think would eat them. Leonardo (87) outright admits to eating them to which 03 Leo finds disgusting but Rise Leo is just happy that it's confirmed instinct & that his brothers can get off his shell on being tempted to eat them. Just been having fun leaning into the whole turtle aspect when writing & wish the official stuff would more so play with it because there's a lot of interesting things to explore. Suppose part of why I adore Rise so much is that they play along with the turtley-ness of it & adapt traits from their species but at the same time, they kinda have to. Draxum was playing Pokemon here & wanted a diverse team which makes sense as to why he went with different species. Utilizing the personality traits the different species possess helps to demonstrate his intentions with selecting the various species without having to tell the audience this.

Having finished the video, I definitely agree with number 1. I’ve been saying for years that 2012 turtles was nigh perfect series with the only thing holding it back was the April x Donatello thing. One fix to that issue could have been pairing Mona Lisa with Donnie and having the 87 voice actress of Mona Lisa reprise her role. I would also gave Mona her 87 origin story as well as being a lab student. Raph could have been paired with his IDW girlfriend, Alopex…which is weird but mutant + mutant is better than mutant + human.

I don’t know if anyone is upset in the comments, but something of note is that these rankings have nothing to do with the writing or the quality of any iteration. So we can root for our favourites, but if they don’t do well that doesn’t mean they’re bad or any worse than the others. Something this ranking does is really highlight one of my favourite things about TMNT. How versatile the franchise is. Each iteration is able to be its own interpretation and make its own canon. This was a great video! Though I think that with the turtle section I see some turtles that can go into their shells and swim effectively when in reality that is pretty unlikely. Box turtles are the species known for being able to go into their shells, but they’re also known for staying away from water and not being great swimmers in general. However, said characteristics are very turtle-esque (red-eared sliders, soft shells and alligator snapping turtles are aquatic), so idk if accuracy would retract from the turtle ranking anyways. I guess it also depends on your interpretation of whether the turtles with the homogeneous species groups are box turtles in the first place.

I honestly agree with this list except for 1 small detail and that's mainly due to the ninja category for I think the 2012 TMNT does it more better than the 2003 verison with them adapting and using their ninja training. Especially in the final episode of the series where they all dress in all black and infiltrate Shredder's base and took him out and the fact he's not an alien Utrom. Regardless still they manage to take it anyways so I can't be to upset with that and it was an enjoyable video.
@John6-409 ай бұрын
It wouldn't be a TMNT list without a young person swiftly dismissing the 1987 series and having the more modern series at the top. We all just love what we grew up with. To me, the 1987 series set the tone that all the following series would follow to one extent or another. I think younger fans just get thrown off by the side of 80's and 90's corniness that was common in cartoons of that era. As an older person, I get thrown off by the edgy emo theme of 2000's cartoons and the zoomer humor of the 2010's cartoons. We're all just products of our era. I particularly disagree with you on low rankings for the Teenage, Mutant and Turtle categories for the 1987 series. That said, I still enjoyed your video. 😊
@torisaursky9 ай бұрын
The 1987 series is probably my second-favorite iteration of the turtles, I absolutely adore it. I wouldn’t change a thing about it (except maybe the Red Sky arc cuz I’m not really a fan of those episodes) and it does what it does really well; however, that’s not the point of this video. When specifically looking at how well it does in each of the four categories compared to other iterations, it ranks really low. I also didn’t grow up with ANY version of TMNT and only just got into the franchise, so I have absolutely no nostalgia associated with any of the iterations. I absolutely ADORE the corniness of the original series and it’s a major reason as to why it’s one of my favorites. Some fans might get thrown off by it, but it’s the reason I find it so charming. Like I mentioned, this video is not about how good each iteration is or how much I enjoy it (Mutant Mayhem would be in the bottom half of the list if I approached it that way), but how accurately each one reflects the title. Hope this helps!

You point out 2018/Rise Raph's height and say "you mean to tell me this is a 15-year-old?" But my brother is 6' 2" and he is 15. And he was 6' for most of age 14 and actually refusing the shell Rise!Raph looks to have a similar build to brother too

It’s not just his height; my brother was also over 6 feet at 15, but Raph’s build makes him look MUCH older

I doubt that the mutant mayhem Splinter will remain a random rat. I feel like it’ll be retconned somehow to say he was the pet of Homato Yoshi, bc one you don’t get that good at ninjitsu from film and two, how does a rat from New York obtain a Japanese accent. Just my theory though we’ll see soon enough
@naquangreen21928 ай бұрын
@BWSStudios Splinter in mutant mayhem wasn't Japanese, he was Chinese and portrayed/voice by Jackie Chan That is why they had scenes of the turtles learning from 60s-70s Kung Fu films rather than 80s-90s Ninja movies Kung Fu and Japanese martial arts are two different forms of fighting.

I hope one day I can find a girl like you that likes tmnt. I collect the 1987 neca figures. I grew up with the 2003 tmnt and I discovered the 87 show and next mutation at my local hollywood video. Still own all 3 of the trilogy VHS tapes too. Grew up on the 1990 movie too. And when the 2012 show came out I was actually intetested and excited

The best moment of Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation was their team up with the Space Rangers on Power Rangers In Space.

I'm a little biased do the fact that I grew up with the 4Kids version. The 2003 turtles are my jam, but I love pretty much all of the versions that I've seen even the Bay turtles, even though they're probably the ones I've revisited the least, but even so I got no hate for them. I will say it has been years since I directly looked at the original cartoon, and while I would love to rewatch it, there's 10 seasons. Like those guys are iconic, and so fair, but, 10 seasons is almost too much. Even for turtles. The IDW comics are similar to the 2012 Nick show in that there a fair mix of most of what came before, but perhaps to an even greater extent. I'm a little behind right now. But on the other hand, I did spend last summer catching up on over a decade worth of comics that I had not been reading up to this point that point, so I think that's fair in my case. I also read the Mirage comics, and where they are, Turtles Prime, and are where all turtles originated from, I feel like they'd probably do pretty badly in the teenage category, though it has been a while since I read them. Every other category, though I think they be fine, for one thing they're one of the few, if only versions of the turtles where you can see their tails, which is you know something that turtles have, but it never seem to exist when it comes to the Teenage Mutant variety. And while I said, I don't think they do too well on the teenage category, at least based on my memory alone, I will say that issue 2 Does have Mikey and Raph roughhousing in such a way that it's tearing up the layer. Meanwhile, Donnie is having his tech/science interest introduced as he's working on some sort of motherboard, all the wild Leo is reading Dune while Splinter is watching I think soap operas. It might just be me, but is there a weirdly large number of versions of splinter? Who for some reason is a fan of soap operas, or is that just my imagination I know for a fact that both the 03 version and the TMNT 2007 version of Splinter definitely watch so Just saying. Sorry, couldn't help myself. I have like one friend who was a fan of the turtles and I don't get to talk or see him very often. Overall, I'd say that your list was fun and I think the results are mostly fair. I do question the statement of saying any of them don't look like turtles, but that might just be my biased brain talking because to me they're all just turtles. Like I don't think I can look at normal turtle and not see a ninja turtle now I wonder if that counts as some sort of disease.

Some people have pointed out in my TikTok comments that they’re probably tortoises (who can’t swim) so I don’t think it’s the end of the world if they can’t

2003 actually follows more of the original version of the turtles as in original comics on story wise but then again it had one of the og creators on that show and they hated what the 87 show did to April
