Would a hook with a vertical fist be a Sow or a Kup?
@nickmichon4917
@nickmichon4917 Жыл бұрын
Twist fist inwards (counterclockwise for right hand) and pronate so that first fist would make contact (even though entire inner forearm is the striking surface) is Sow. Hit with heel of palm using fist formation with thumb on side so that it's out of the way, is Kup. Both Sow and Kup should come down at about a 45 degree angle.

擒 Kam - to capture 拿 Na - to hold. Kam Na is the same as Chin Na The first technique is actually described in English by the performer as slapping. 拍 paak. The techniques in this video is mostly far from the translation of the words.

@@Andy-ud1gd the character used for kum was an error should be 冚. The second element is cheun na which the action performed is cheun kiu. The reason they are listed together is because of the close relationship between the cheun kiu and na
@Andy-ud1gd
@Andy-ud1gd 4 ай бұрын
@@SifuChrisChilds 🙏 冚 can be translated as All or All of. How do you make the connection with a perry or slap? The second is "cheun"? What is the translation here? But 拿 Na still means to hold. And you are showing a motion that is more piercing/penetrating, that is not the same as to hold and control. You are making me more confused now. 😄 Would you care to elaborate please? I understand that Chinese characters are not the same as words, so it can be tricky at times. Do you have one set of 10 characters you show the public and another translation for your students. I mean in Chinese arts that would not be unheard of. I would imagine that the basics were pretty specific. But some of them are way off. 級 Kap is not to cover, but rank, grade or level.

@@Andy-ud1gd The ten elements of Choy Lay Fut are best understood as concepts or broad categories of techniques, under which various specific techniques can fall. Each element represents a fundamental idea or principle that can be expressed through multiple techniques, depending on the situation and the practitioner’s approach. For example, the element Gwa (掛) encompasses techniques that involve a hanging or sweeping motion, while Kum (冚) includes techniques focused on pressing or covering. Similarly, Chuen (穿), which means "threading," represents techniques that involve weaving or penetrating through an opponent's defenses, often using a spiral or circular motion to bypass their guard. These elements are not fixed, single techniques but rather versatile tools that can be adapted and applied in various combat scenarios. The flexibility of these elements allows practitioners to adjust their approach dynamically during a fight, making them highly effective and adaptable. Although each element has its own core characteristics, the techniques used to express these concepts can vary, ensuring that the practitioner maintains structural integrity and effectiveness in different situations. For training purposes, the Ng Family chose a specific technique that is the most common variation in their school to represent each element. This approach helps students internalize the fundamental concepts by associating each element with a representative technique, making it easier to learn and understand. However, it’s important to note that the terminology for individual techniques in Choy Lay Fut can differ by lineage. Different schools or lineages within the Choy Lay Fut system may use different names or emphasize different techniques for the same element.

@@Andy-ud1gd Chuen (穿) and Na (拿) are closely related concepts in Choy Lay Fut, and their connection lies in the practical application of techniques. Chuen, which means "threading," involves weaving or penetrating through an opponent's defenses, often using a spiral or circular motion to bypass their guard. This motion is crucial in setting up a successful Na, or grabbing technique. In actual combat, it is typically necessary to use a Chuen Kiu (Threading Bridge) before attempting a Na (grab). This is because simply trying to snatch punches or limbs out of the air without first establishing bridge contact with the opponent is highly unlikely to succeed. The Chuen Kiu allows the practitioner to make contact, control the opponent's movement, and create an opportunity for a more secure and effective grab. By threading through the opponent's defenses with Chuen Kiu, the practitioner can disrupt their balance and positioning, making the subsequent Na technique more likely to succeed. This relationship between Chuen and Na highlights the importance of understanding the interconnectedness of the ten elements in Choy Lay Fut. Each element is not an isolated technique but part of a broader strategy that allows for fluid transitions and effective control in combat situations.

Choy Lay Fut is a fully committed style. Once you start you must follow through and connect before your opponent can evade and respond. Its great advantage is speed and the capacity to attack from just about any angle, without pausing to re-position. Its weakness lies in its full commitment. If the other guy is faster or sneakier and gets through you are exposed. Every style has strengths and weaknesses. Choy Lay Fut, done effectively, is very dangerous to meet head on but if you do and are fast and powerful enough to match or beat them they are wide open.

What if I told you there's also 53 different weapons to learn in CLF? Not kidding. It's kinda silly to judge the art on some training exercises out of context though. Especially when we're talking about CLF which is known for hard sparring and holding their own against Thai boxers.

It is the practice of the rooting and stance to deliver full power techniques that you see here. In contact sparring and competition 'Kumite' you have to have your rudiments down pat and to anticipate what you have in your repertoire to meet your opponents next tact in a seamless manner. In sparring it is not only your moves and conditioning, but observing and assessing your opponents as well from breathing to observable pulse and of course stance and balance. This eliminates being exposed to attack, think of the 'doors' and always have them closed to your oppositions next possible strike, or in the motion that changes the availability of an exposure. The science of CLF is to be like a human spring, spinning and flinging strikes with momentum gained from large movements with accuracy. This comes from Siu Lam techniques that reposition muscle structure on the way to a culminating strike. Think which part of your arm you use in Sow Choi so you don't hurt yourself for instance. Practise.

@@SifuChrisChilds: it's true what I say. U r not qualified to b a clf sifu. Just look @ Lee Koon Hung & his ppl (Wong dat mau, Lee siu Hung, etc ...) to see how clf is to b performed. W fluidity, flexibility, smooth powerful & fierce actions & movements, quick deceptive & flowing footwork. W fist whipping around like rocks on d end of a string. Powerful transitions from move to move. Full follow thru & extensions. U r lacking in all d features that make what clf is. Arrogance won't get u anywhere. It leads to ignorance.
